A renowned philosopher, Origen, had once said that “Epictetus is more popular than Plato”. Epictetus was born into slavery, and he spent the first 33 years of his life as a slave. His master saw his intellectual potential, freed him and allowed to study Stoicism with another great philosopher “Musonius Rufus”. He soon became a renowned philosopher in Rome. Epictetus has inspired other great stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius. Epictetus didn’t write a book, but his Stoicism and philosophical thoughts were saved by his student “Arrian”. Thanks to his students, we have a collection of his philosophical reflections in different books like Enchiridion, Discourse, and the art of Living.
