I just came from a toxic environment. In a matter of 2 months, I got bald spots, was placed on blood pressure meds, and had high anxiety every day. Very stressful. I am no longer there, and I'm feeling so much better.
I have just retired and I have worked in lots of places. I will tell you this. Be very careful in the workplace. Toxic people aren't always obvious and the ones trying to befriend you and are trying to get you to talk about the workplace and your private life are usually up to something. Just do this. Don't trust anyone. Keep your thoughts to yourself. Keep work and your private life apart. If the actual job is rubbish. keep it to yourself, look for another job, and then leave. Don't give people ammunition to go and tell management what you think of the company. I retired at 54 which was as soon as I could to get out of working due to all the toxicity I had encountered.
Yep very true thank you for the advice my company and co workers are very toxic in a very sly way im not stupid. Co owner is extremely nosiey and main boss is a complete narcissistic asshole started t notice more as years went on and after i injured myself there true colours showed up MAJOR. they want to know everything about your personal life. They play mind games with you thinking there here to help but deep down there not its used againt you every way possible. And they wondered why they have had a suicide in the company the guy who did it would say this all the time.. the company have only gotten worst from greed and the power tripping is beyond intolerable co workers are bosses spys its soo hard
@@ryno1808 I worked in a company where the HR manager used to go and tell people other peoples private matters that they had told her in confidence. No one trusted her and I found out she was eventually sacked.
Best advice of the day. I've had it happen, at more than one job, where someone acted nice, at first but proved to be a jealous troll, who hated everyone.
The last place I worked at had 10 out of 10 of these red flags. "High School" was the perfect description, with the "cool" kids inside the inner circle, and everybody else on the outside. It's a reflection of leadership. Very disheartening to see how many organizations fulfill these criteria.
My current hov has most of these signs. Gossip is rampant and anyone who leaves is painted as a lazy person who had performance issues. I'm actively looking to leave.
When passionate employees become quite...Gossiping...no appreciation...no acknowledgement...so much more. I recently ended my stay in a hostile work environment. I felt the last 2 years of my time there was such a hit to my self esteem and self worth. Before the change in management I was one of the highest valued employees within a year of new management I was beat down emotionally and mentally. I recently left and that resignation was like warm soup on a cold day for my soul and mental well being!
You are paying for your manager stagnation and low self esteem. She is scapegoating you to pay for her lack of skills and desire to grow beyond herself
What you mentioned in 4 through 9 is exactly what I'm experiencing. I don't want to leave without getting another job. I love what I do in IT, but it's so toxic. They are always adding more projects, but no compensation. Only his favs that don't even work that hard get raises & promotions. I'm planning my exit strategy, and hopefully, it goes as planned.🙏🏽🙏🏽
Just become his fav, do not work a lot, get promotion.... easy-peasy. The thing is, employees who work more than others are never promoted, it is a law. They just get more duties
Signs 4-9 are what I experienced in the last permanent job role I had nearly a year and a half ago, which I left eventually. Since then, I’ve been working temporary positions and struggled to get another permanent job. ☹️
Brigette is just out here describing most Nigerian organisations. Hopefully, they learn and change soon enough because a generation is coming into the workforce that cares a little less about how much they earn and more about how they're treated... Great video as usual, Brigette! You're a true gem!
@BrigetteHyacinth thanks for sharing. About 3months ago I resigned from a company I worked with for 8 years; however, the past year I took a promotion in a different department and it was the worst mistake of my life. All the traits you mentioned I experienced. I was get sick physically and mentally. That was where I experienced severe anxiety and stress. I was barely eating and drastically loss weight. It was terrible and I had to resign without finding employment. My last day was the best I felt in one year. Employers need to start listen to their personnel and investigate high turnover in an effort to weed out bad management and leadership. Thanks again for the eye opener.
Had a heart attack on June 16,2023. resigned from a toxic job of 7 years Aug 30,2023. I just couldn't take it anymore. Kiddie people and kiddie rules. I had to get out of there and I feel so much better
You have described the company I used to work for to the point. Been through all you mentioned on the video. Senior management just ignore you when youn raise issues. They just want to brush it under the carpet. When someone handed in their note they were treated badly. HR were useless. Did not have a clue how to handle these situations. Glad I am out of that environment
Thank you so much for your video. Same happened to me and I quit due to toxic working envrionment. New job and decision is difficult but i have saved my self respect. Please pray for my speedy adjustments and career. Would love to see your more videos on this.
Thank you for sharing this. It is yet another confirmation that I am in a toxic workplace. I try to tell my colleagues; unfortunately they are blinded by money, they think they are earning. They don't know I see in them how negatively our manager's actions are affecting our me talk and emotional health. I have turned in my resignation and am glad that I took this brave step.. it has honestly taken a toll on my mental, emotional,as well as my physical health. I stopped talking and speaking up after the negative effects of trying to help out at work. My colleagues even try to dissuade me from leaving, but they too are thinking of leaving.
I’m in the same boat. I just started my job back in May and everything she stated in this video is what’s going on at my job. Like she said though, I have to plan my exit strategy strategically and get out of there
I left mine three months ago. It is a private school here in Abuja, Nigeria. The management talk to you disrespectfully like you're a baby. Some were used to it and spoke in same manner. I wasn't and also wasn't ready to become toxic. My mental health was affected. I began frequenting to the hospital until I could take it no more. Now, I'm at peace with a remote job.
I just left a toxic work environment. It took a toll on my health and I developed stress related digestive issues as well as off the charts high blood pressure. 2 days after I left I went to the doc and my blood pressure was 120/68. Hadn’t been that since before I started the job!!!
You hit on so many vital points and I really hope that companies and their management watch this video. The term management itself is unfortunately still very widely misunderstood, to the point that they don't make or lose money because they stifle good staff/contractors. Thanks for this👍
Hi, Bridgette. I have been following you on Linkedin for several years. I love your Trinidadian accent! Out of the ten signs that you covered, the one that resonated most with me was the last one. I always say that where there is smoke, there is fire. When a company has a high turnover rate, then bad management is almost always the culprit. If you treat employees humanely, then they will want to stay.
Gossip can make a work environment toxic as well. No having a supervisor to stop office gossip and keep colleagues on task and turn the work place toxic. I just want to go to work and do what they pay me to do.
I love to see how you explain, mimick and body language are full of meaning into your saying. I've been in this situation in 6 months, and your last advice said to plan to leave the job. I'll do for the better.
God bless you for the video post. I am a contractor and been in business for better part of 18 years. One of my most profitable accounts has been the most difficult and toxic companies and persons I have ever subcontracted for and work along side. An employee I have had for 15 years finally left for several reasons however one of which is the toxic level of the company we do work for. This company has lost two of there best employees. One owner is a bully and in classic style, picked on the best until they left. He has turned his efforts on me in the last couple of years. The other owner cones across as friendly however can be very manipulative disrespectful and a bully in his own right. I am at the point where I am considering parting ways. Even if it means I have to close my doors take a pay cut and work for someone else. You can't pay me enough to subjugate myself to that kind of behaviour.
4:20 I distinctly remember one former colleague who was the informant to the managers. She got promoted- whilst still keeping her in the team because she was the eyes and the ears of the managers.
Favouritism, lack of career support, poor work life balance, high turnover you hit the nail on the head. The best feeling is walking away and no longer being a part of the chaos. Your mental, physical and spiritual health is not worth the torment. Take the lessons and left the trauma!
Wow, watching this video I just realized what is the cause of all my health problems and fears. I’ve been in this work place for 2 years, fear is what doesn’t let me move on. 😢😢😢
Yes when I worked for Metropolitan Transit Authority. I had to do a 6 month temporary assignment from Goodwill Agency. The employees were lazy, judgmental, pessimistic, bullying, rude and unprofessional. They treated temporary employees poorly. The manager Michael D'Souza had no business being a manager. I think he transfered to another department but he was manipulative and lied about certain things he had to do. Then I found out later he was a creep. His personality was like a Covert Narcissist. He told his wife something about me when he was the one harassing me, like a triangulation. I was so glad when I left by the end of the year. I didn't say bye when my time was up. He still is stalking me up until this day and that job was since 2018.
I was preparing my exit strategy when I was fired. I honestly did not realize how toxic of work environment I was in. I also lost what I thought was a good friend. Still looking for a job. 😞
Hi, In my organisation, im on off role and company is not even concerned to make me on rol last 3 years. My manager was demises 6 months ago and no new is hired since then. Yes i get work life balance and macro management is there but there is no reward recognition no inclusion signs and no team unity.. Im being outcast and there are no signs of change in it.. I told all this to my interim manager but that also blames that im playing blame games.. I trust this type of work life balance and macro management is also of no use...we get paid for our work...and for that work we need reward and recognition time to time....i think that's equally important walong with work life balance and macro management
I was once working in this environment, when i apply for leave, it gets rejected, leaving employees where put in isolation, and micromanagement, everyone complained and HR never did nothing
Why is some random person in a video on RU-vid making me cry by saying that I'm amazing etc at the end? I've only been at this job for about 10 weeks and I'm already waiting for my 6 months to get done so i can leave without them deducting money out of my paychecks for the background check and TB test i got before working there. Because if you work there less than 6 months, it comes out of your last paycheck and if you don't give them a 2 week notice, your last paycheck is minimum wage.
I am in a toxic work environment - expected/pressured to come in early, stay late (without pay), expected to go to all work events without being paid, given extra work like cleaning and banking on top of our already heavy work load, being micromanaged and high employee turnover. However, I also get appreciated and praised for my work daily, I absolutely love my team and feel fully supported by everyone in the work place. So it's hard knowing if I should stay or go...
I just left my job of 6 years because it was so toxic i couldnt take it anymore.I checked 8 out of your 10 but i can add one of my own.Being made to do illegal work i was not certified to do putting myself and the public at risk to save money.
Is it toxic when management keeps on adding more to your job responsibilities and their response is “We should be happy that we still have a job”. So I never ask for more $$$$. Also is it toxic if I don’t remember something, and I get from my manager “You been here for a long time, you should know this by now”.
4:12 Yes. Managers taking to each other. It’s sufficient for one to dislike you. Oh, he/she is a troublemaker. And on it goes. It’s the same with the system of references. They are subjective.
I need some advice. I always had problems with women at work. I’m the quiet type and I am in my 40’s but look 20 years old. I get a lot of hate for it. I’m starting a new job and was wondering if buying a wedding band so people think I’m married 😂 I just want it to work out and them not think I’m going to be competition for the work boy toy. I just want to work and go home. I’m even going to say I have like 5 kids or something 😂 do you think that will help?
Hi Brigette, I left my job due to a toxic work environment, but I didn't have anything line up. Now that I am interviewing for a new job I am having problems answering that question. I tried saying it wasn't a good fit, but they always want you to follow it with why, and I don't know how to respond without being negative, and finally I was told never to talk about the cutture, because they may think you are the problem, and not them. Can you please help on a suitable response?
HAHA yeah I'm in a toxic work environment and my VP won't even respond to me! Out of that list my current employer is 9/10. Only reason we aren't at 10/10 is because I refuse to call out, but I will be using all of my PTO and floating holidays soon..... I also watched the entire interview panel turn down someone last week due to ethnicity and background. They came here from the Soviet Union on a scholarship for violin in the late 80s. Literally was told "we are turning this person down because you know how Russians bribe and lie about everything". The guy isn't even Russian and is from a place that is about 65km away from where my family is from in Poland. Sitting there thinking "I really hope they don't realize myself and Yuri aren't of the same ethnic group...." Time to find a new job!!!!!
Hi Brigette, I recently got fired from government county job while on probation reason said was I am not a good fit. Actually it was something that needed to be done because it was a toxic environment for me, I had anxiety everyday. My managers wouldn't speak to me, answer my messages etc. I have an interview for another Position in the county government. What do u suggest I say when they ask me why I am no longer in this position? I really want get back into the governemnt.
