THANK YOU.... it did take a bit of time actually. Thanks for your appreciation of the amount of work that went in it buddy. Really makes it all worth it
It can record at any resolution, even at highest quality 6k or 4K for as long as your media can take. There’s no heating issues whatsoever. It has a fan and a very effective heat dissipation system in place.
That’s right, a year ago everybody was complaining that each manufacturer was just falling short of producing the perfect camera. As far as I can see, this is it, yet the likes of Canon’s EOS R get far more attention. Great video, loved the animations too - quality.
Inclusion of the information about the focus by wire fix is a level above what I usually find on other channels. Its been a big reason Ive avoided upgrading to newer lenses so well done s1H and well done DP journey for sharing that info! A huge headline feature in my opinion
Thanks a lot James for your compliments. I’m glad you understand the value of such option. As I said it’s the kind of feature that would appeal to PROs
Man,...you made a SUPERB video. I hope Panasonic pays you for this! I have owned my S1 for almost a year now and I just purchased the S1H yesterday. I have owned MANY cameras over the decades including several XDCAMs and Alphas. I'm now selling my Sony FS7 and replacing it with this S1H. Fantastic job on this video.
Thanks a lot Cliff for the support and compliments. I’m sure Panasonic won’t pay anything of course LOL. I would never ask for money to praise any brand, as you know my videos are purely my opinions as a DP, that will never change and this will always be my promise to everyone. There’s enough confusion out there on RU-vid that needs to be cleared out, and I feel honesty is a good start. Thanks again buddy
The S1H is a definitely a game changer for professional video production. The camera really is a full-blown 6K cinema camera in a mirrorless body that exceeds the capabilities of anything else in it’s class. For video, television, and film production I can confidently say it offers more bang for the buck of any video camera ever made. Here’s a link to my review of the camera and a trailer for a the 4-hour S1H master class I have produced that can help new owners get the best results with their camera. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GhZP14WVCn0.html
Wow. After seeing this, I'm seriously considering the S1H as a future camera. Currently, I have the BMPCC4K, which I really love. But, I started out with a GH5, which I shot a feature film with. So, I know that Panasonic makes great cameras. Plus, Panasonic cameras have never had the over heating issues other brands, like Sony, still have. Thanks for this video.
Thanks buddy for the compliments... yeah I also had Gh5, then got the BM4K, then now the S1H. It's very worth it

Every time a video of yours pops up in my feed, I end up wanting to buy the S1H as my main camera for video! Once I do, I'll have to rewatch your videos of course. With that top quality you bring to them, they'll be as enjoyable as the first time I watched them. Great work!
Jim, your words humble me. Thanks a lot buddy for these kind compliments. And most of all, Really happy they're offering you an informed decision on what would work for you. Happy to have you onboard
@@THEDPJOURNEY I wanted t get the Sony ZV E-10 for video but it has not been available anywhere for months. So after some research I decided to get the Panasonic Lumix S5 (and hopefully make enough money to get the S1H or S1H Mark 2 when it releases) You have one of the best (if not the best) videos on the Lumix S series. Buy getting the S5 I am inspired to do so many more things than with the ZV E-10. In addition I have the S1H to strive for and the lenses I invest in will fit it!
I don't know if you put that much effort into all your videos, but I'm subscribing just to find out. Great info, beautiful and useful graphic / motion design too. Very high production value in this content, to a degree that I rarely see on RU-vid.
Thank you so much David for the kind compliments. In fact I do put that effort in all videos... and it’s all worthwhile to find awesome people like yourself appreciate it. Thanks again buddy and glad to have you onboard ;)
Awesome video man, really makes me want to break out of my MFT environment lol. Side note: the production quality of your videos is FANTASTIC! I love the close up product shots along with the transitions/elements added in. Great work man. Even if it take you a little longer to upload, keep up that quality man it's great!
Thank you so much Robert for the support. Really appreciate it. Happy the efforts that go into these videos are noticed by awesome people like you buddy
@@THEDPJOURNEY Have been subbed since the GH5 grading video :) Your channel is really interesting and I learn a lot, all the best hope you get 100K soon

Hi Sherif, thank for another outstanding video! So great to see how much great content you put out about the S1H - Better than many other RU-vidrs in my opinion. Question: What are your thoughts on the upcoming Canon R5? Thanks!
Hey Omer, thanks a lot buddy for the comment about my videos. Happy to have you onboard. The R5 is still too early to talk about it, but I feel there will be a LOT of catches and fine prints in what they claimed publicly. I'm not expecting much from it honestly, knowing canon...
I doubts that Canon will allow the R5 to have more DR and better image quality than the C500mkii. And I have yet to see C500mkii footage on youtube that have impressed me like some of the S1H footage that I have seen so far. Maybe those C500 users do not know how to get the best out of the camera🤷🏽♂️ , maybe. Maybe it’s my untrained eyes 🤷🏽♂️😂 . All I know is that The S1H is pure 🔥🔥🔥. That DR , The V-Log and the Dual IS makes for a serious combo that is worth not having AF. I have to say that The FX9 has way better colors and DR (check out Austin Black s Video, image and grade is amazing) but its also twice the price and 3 times the size. For small budget BMPCC 6K looks better in my opinion but you got to rig it🤦🏽♂️. My S1H will be home very soon !!! And I am not worried at all about the canon R5.
😂 When the production quality of the RU-vid review is better than any videos released by Panasonic. Oh well. I guess Panasonic wants to let their customers take the spotlight. A good marketing move. 😊
Great stuff! And I learned some more about this camera. One thing I don't like about the S1H is the fact that your battery drains much faster if you leave it in the camera. The screen on top keeps being lit up but I think it also uses up the remaining juice in your battery. So, every time you pick up your camera after 3 days, you need to recharge that battery, even when it was full wen it went in. So, I take it out. The IBIS on the camera itself is quite rubbish, it keeps shaking along and with the boost switch on, the images start to look worse than an iPhone. If you want great moving results, use a gimbal or steady cam. Else it's rolling shutter up your sleeve, combined with jerky IBIS correction. but love this camera!
Every time I watch your video about S1H, I feel like end up getting it but I sometimes shoot weddings too and I am afraid to say that I find S1H not a very reliable camera when it comes to shooting a wedding in run and gun. (Note: AF is very important when it comes to wedding) Maybe you should make one video about Auto Focus of S1H just to clear the air !
NO need for a video about it unfortunately.... AF is bad in the S1H compared to the competition from Sony or canon. If AF is more important than everything else, then don't buy the S1H.
Yay! Another awesome cine video from my favorite RU-vidr! So glad for this video! The S1H keeps getting better, so happy about the Raw option coming soon; I assume it's 4k ProRes Raw? 12bit Raw? (fingers crossed for 14bit Raw at 23.98fps) Not recording in Raw was my major gripe with this camera. Will it be compressed Raw, like REDCode and BRaw? I also wanted larger media than SD cards, but can live with that. As far as image quality, the S1H will rock over the R5; 14+ stops of dynamic range > 8k. Still hoping for a 4:4:4 affordable camera, but the EVA2 will have that? Glad to hear the S1H has waveform, I use that a lot. I was hoping it would also have false color. Histograms can be deceiving, especially in a dark scene. About the lenses... were you referring to L-mount panasonic lenses? or all L-mount lenses? (that can electronically switch from focus by wire to linear). Most Fuji lenses can switch by moving the focus ring. That's a great option. I almost the S1H had two USB-C ports, one for charging and one for data recording, since HDMI is limited to 4k, or one USB-B and one 12G SDI. The S1H is approved by Netflix which is a great selling when talking to clients or producers. I believe this camera will quickly pay for itself for any professional. When it becomes available, I would your opinions on the ZCam F6; I believe it has the same sensor as the S1H. Thanks!
Yeah this camera is surely great so far, has some quirks still that I'm planning to cover in another review episode, but so far it's one of the top Mirrorless cameras out there. ProRes RAW will hopefully be a great feature, I'd say 12bit linear RAW. Let's see. I'm hearing mixed reactions about the Zcam... gotta test it myself honestly. Thanks again for the awesome comment
Very high quality content, in both explanation and graphics. I'm impressed! You did not mention another important feature: The ability to precisely adjust the shutter speed when experiencing flicker of lights and/or screens.
Please, make video about useful plugins for FCPX. I really like the transitions and the zoom-in+blur effects. Thanks! Also, it would be great a tutorial of Keynote used for video animation.
I really want to buy just one camera and keep it for 2-4 years. I’m hoping this is the one for me. I like the A7iii but the tech is rolling out so fast now, I don’t wanna get stuck w an outdated camera after paying a bunch of money for lenses. I have a question for you if you don’t mind answering. With me setting up my manual focus can I use this for RU-vid videos? If so, what native lens should I buy? Thanks!!
It is unfortunate that RU-vid does not allow us to give 3 or 5 thumbs up. Super accurate information for us professional users, delivered in a very slick manner. In particular, your graphics are outstanding, delivering the info on point and looking drop dead gorgeous. Thank you, I will be back.
Am speechless with such awesome compliments. Your comment is worth a lot more than RU-vid’s thumbs ups. Thanks again for your awesome support and humbling words
What a fantastic video you put together mate, nicely done. The S1H has been a game changer for me and a huge step up from the A7S ii, so glad I didn't decide to wait on the myth A7s iii. You listed out most of the things that really make all the difference on day to day shoots, it's not all about specs. Thanks for the huge amount of effort put into this project, just subbed for more content!
you have made your point, (regarding HD and the format we actually watch contnet in) but the S1H isn’t being targeted at youtube producitons. its being marketed as a B C or D cam for much larger scale productions where HD as a capture format (even if if HD is the delivery format) just isnt good enough these days the Super35 thing for 50 and 60p is a deal breaker for me simply because it wills top me getting proper wide shots witht he standard L series lenses. If it as planing on adapting lenses for this camera then it wouldn’t be an issue, but i want to go to a system with all native glass and the focus clutch options on the native lenses make that possible I can’t wait to buy into this system but i’m forced to at least wait untill the next generation of the S1H, hopefully not longer than that 😢
Hi thanks another great, detailed and easy to understand video. S1h is a beast. Just one little thing. Don't you think that 1080p quality of this camera is a bit poor? 4 downsample is perfect, 1080p a bit soft even when I have it side by side with a c100. What are your findings?
I honestly haven’t compared it to the C100, I know Canon has an awesome compression algorithm in place. I wouldn’t be surprised if their FHD is better than the S1H
I like the V-Log Spot Meter, which shows you how many stops under or over you are from middle gray. This makes it a cakewalk to meter your subject and see where your highlights fall in a jiffy!
18:05 I hear you. That little red recording dot. Placed inconsistently. How many times I have screwed up. Way to go with the rectangle. Thanks for pointing out this nifty detail.
What a great video and I love the animations! What do you use to create your videos? You have a new subscriber! I am also considering a S1H, I've been using my GH5 for many years now but would love a full frame. Do you also have recommendations for lenses? Cheers!
Thanks Neil for the support and kind words. Yeah I have the GH5 as well which I love. S1H was a much worthy upgrade. I use sigma lenses with Mc-21 adapter
Does anyone knows how good is the lcd screen in order to use it at sunlight? I´m just not a big fan of using an external monitor for run & gun situations. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing 👍 One of my favorite features is the "Load custom mode" I have saved a bunch of presets so it takes only a few seconds to change the whole system. I use that all the time on jobs. 😎
Thank you so much for all the work you put into these vids... just really great. Looking to purchase this camera and I have a question regarding your setup. Is there a follow focus you use for handheld, or do you just use the lens? Also, I will be buying a cage as well, have you tried this on a gimbal with a cage? Lastly, any other issues you've run into in the past few months with this camera? Any input would be awesome. Thanks!
Dam incredible!............I knew the S1h was the camera for me the first time I saw the footage! Now after watching this, u have sealed the deal!👊🏽😡👍🏾
Really happy for you buddy. Glad the video helped you make this decision, I left links in the description to the camera, feel free to use them when you’re ready for the decision. Thanks again buddy for the compliments
I watched this twice! I would love to see the lens focus feature you mentioned in action. It works with all lenses or only the Panasonic lenses? Only Lmount lenses? Are you adapting with the Sigma adapter? I really want to sel my GH5 and Sonyaiii and replace them both with the S1H For stills and video and keep my GH5s as my b cam.
Yeah it works with all compatible lenses yes, not only L mount. Not on old vintage lenses of course. I do use the MC-21 adapter. I actually like the A7III for photos. Haven't really tried the S1H photo features, especially that the AF is not reliable
@@THEDPJOURNEY. The autofocus in photo mode isn't reliable? That's definitely a hit. I thought the S series from Panasonic had good autofocus in photo mode. Man, what don't they just use phase detectors? I might just wait and see the specs on the Canon side.. I just love all the extras that Panasonic puts in their cameras.
Well we still have no idea about how good or bad the R5 will be... we can't really judge with the current hype Canon is creating. Canon has been disappointing us for almost a decade now. Let's wait and see
How is the stills capability? 90% of my work is film but often on set I need to take a few high quality BTS pics for the client. We do have an A7iii for that but is the S1H capable of matching it in image quality and dynamic range?
Just when I thought the Sony FX9 looked like the best option for corporate and documentary work, content of the S1H keeps popping into my feed and I'd rather get two if these than a single Sony. Panasonic is raising the bar way too high for the competition this side of large cinema camera.
@@THEDPJOURNEY I began shooting with the gh4 when it came out and I love the quasi flat profile they have, also not needing specialized media storage it's a huge plus for me for in-body backup
Can you make a comparison between s1h vs 1dx miii (or ii) ? I think its highly underated all panasonic, and maybe a good comparision can change some minds.
They even applied a RED button to tease the RED company. That was cheeky! Man, i loved the GH4 and even shot an entire feature on it, you definitely sold me the SH1.
Thanks Michael for the comment. By the way... that Netflix list is not a sign of excellence at all. People confuse it as a benchmark of camera quality. Not to say that S1H is not awesome, cuz it’s pretty good
Hi DP Journey, Very well done and professional video on S1H. I’m a beginner and learning curve is high so these videos are very helpful as it accelerates my learning. Thank you! I have several comments: 1) Lenses. Before buying thenS1H, I had 3 bodies (A73, GH5, and EOSR) that I paired with the EF lenses and focal reducer adapters. With exception of A73 video, these lenses have performed very well with all the bodies. In particular, the 35/1.4 ii and 85/1.4 IS works well with the S1H. What lenses do you use besides the cine lenses?; 2) Varicam luts. Do you use these and/or your own? I love how the colors come out. Canon colors were my favorite but recently but I put the EOSR against the S1H for stills and at least for me, the colors on the S1H were more natural, warmer, more sharp, and had better dynamic range. As a hybrid shooter, I expected the video to be better but not for stills. It would be nice to see a comparison between Canon colors and dynamic range vs Panasonic S1H for both stills and videos?; 3) AF (autofocus). I understand that you shoot using manual mode but do you use af in different use cases? I found it better than when GH5 first came out (or during last 2yrs) but hope it will continually improve in future updates as af has it use case as a one person crew; 4) Raw. Since you own both BMPCC 4k and Panasonic S1H, do you think the raw performance on the Atomos Ninja will be able to compare with BMPCC 4-6k BRAW? Much appreciated in advance if you can comment on the above-mentioned! Keep these high quality videos coming. Thank you.
Hey... let me answer: 1: Yes they work very well with the sigma Adapter, not sure which brands of EF you have, but Sigma works like a charm. I use Sigmas and some vintage lenses. 2-Varicam Luts are a bit too much and extreme. I don't use them no. I work on my own and I have some other LUTS I gathered from before. I will be working on releasing some luts soon. So stay tuned ;) I'll wait to see what the R5 will be and maybe i'll compare them. 3-I don't use AF honestly, but when i briefly tried it on S1H I didnt like it 4-There's only 1 way to find out... when they release it I'll be able to answer that. i can't speculate that far honestly. Hope that answered your inquiries ;)
I personally was using SONY for video for several years and was waiting, like many, for The A7sIII for years. Got fed up and jumped into the P4K and for me it is another ball park and very close to the Alexa’s and Red’s I was using on bigger paying jobs. Just recently traded my p4k with a friend for his P6K and I do not think I need another camera for a couple of years. I am blown away with the quality of the black magic cameras. I have a great lens line up including vintage Carl zeiss and Takumars. I suggest people invest their money in good lenses. Camera body’s will come and go. Best to invest in a lens line up.
Totally agree with everything you're saying... BM6K is a bit better than the 4k for sure, i just hate the crop factor in it since it crop when shooting at HFR. And yes, investing in lenses is the wisest choice for sure
Coming from the GH5 and EVA1, I find the S1H to be a great in-between option, with sooooo many features that the other cameras lack. Having experimented with the camera for a few days and reviewing your detailed videos, I'm seriously impressed with all the power packed into the S1H. Yes, it's an "old" camera already by today's fast paced releases, but it fits into my workflow and budget better than the other $4k cameras. Thanks again for your wonderfully informative videos. Solid information packed with great info and motion graphics.
First of all, thanks for the great video. I have a question: I hate focus by fire but a lot of the modern lenses have it and I was always scared to not be able to focus my video manually properly with a photo lens. You talked about the Virtual Linear Focus. I love that! Does it really work with all lenses? Also, with lenses that need Adapters? Thanks again. I subscribed!
