I have also made several Sophie scarfs and also the Italian Summer Scarf which I enjoyed more because I didn’t have to worry about counting rows- using the eyelet row to measure.
Greetings from Olympia, Washington. I watch a lot of knitting content while I knit. And I must say yours is wonderful. You get down to business quickly and I don’t find myself fast forwarding through endless, boring chatter to get to the knitting content. I’ve made 6 Sophie scarfs most for gifts. Thanks for these ideas on similar scarfs. I love wearing scarfs and am going to get a couple of these patterns for something different. Thanks for this….well done!
Thank you for your lovely comment - I was so excited to see that my video had reached someone in Washington (wow)! The Sophie scarf really is a terrific gift knit - I'm sure the recipients of your gifts were over the moon. I'm so glad you liked some of these patterns. The videos where I talk about my current projects might have a bit more chatting in them but I will always try to keep these 'topic' videos nice and concise. Have a great day!
Great vlog, well the Sophie scarf is a definite hit, not wishing to be all of my 50 years of knitting, but as they say, they all come around again, and indeed this is one of them. I literally have dozens of these little skinny scarves, I find them along with socks the ideal handbag project for those unexpected delays. Long before scarves were an accessory, they were a must wear for warmth, (UK), and a greta left over yarn to use up. I think it is wonderful that younger or new to knitting are re-making these small, perfect and highly achievable projects. Great information, thank you for taking time to share.
Thank you so much for leaving a comment for me, it's great to have your insight! You're so right - little scarves are perfect to shove in your handbag. It sounds like you have a marvellous collection of them. Sometimes I wish I was in a colder climate like you, so that I could pile on the knits! But I'm sure once the cold really settled in, I would be missing our hot weather. I'll have to stick with just wearing my knits in my air conditioned office at work ;) Thank you again for dropping by.
This is the first time I have seen your podcast. You have a wonderful presence and presentation. You are so well prepared which I really appreciate and your content in this video caught my attention immediately. I will be watching all your podcasts and have already sent this one to friends. Excellent work! And I’m sure it is a lot of work!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment - reading it has made my day. The work in making a podcast is well worth it to connect with kind people like you!
Hi there, I found this episode very interesting. I haven’t knitted a Sophie Scarf yet, and I don’t intend to. I’m an older lady, and right from the first time I saw this scarf appear, I immediately thought, that is just a Baktus Scarf with an icord edging, I’ve had the Baktus pattern for more than 10 years at least and it was a free pattern. I don’t think it is available any more, but it is still featured on Ravelry with I think over 11,000 projects shown. I know this might be a bit controversial, but I am amazed by the response/popularity of the Sophie scarf just because the designer has a high profile, and from what you say, she hasn’t even included the larger size for those people who have already purchased it. I do think some of the other scarves you featured which have more cables and texture to them are at least worth the cost of the pattern. Like you, I’ve never tackled brioche and a scarf size project might be a good place to start, so I appreciate seeing the patterns you found. However, I will not be purchasing a Sophie scarf pattern. Apologies for being a bit ranty. I did enjoy your podcast and have subscribed. I’m back in my home country of Scotland now (retired) but I lived for quite a few years in Adelaide and my two sons were born there. I still have a great affection for Australia. 🏴🇦🇺
Hi, nice to see a fellow Aussie doing a knitting podcast! I’ve done a few Sophies and given them all away…so I want to do one similar for myself. There were a couple on your list I hadn’t seen, so thanks for sharing! Also, you have a very gentle, soothing voice which was nice to listen to 😊
You might be interested also in An Italian Summer Scarf (by An Italian Knitter) which is a simple pattern (and free!) with a clean edge and the option of modifying the size. I appreciate the roundup you have here, and I think I will try The Simple Thing soon.
An Italian Summer Scarf is stunning and ticks all of my boxes - I wish I had discovered it earlier so I could have included it in this video! Thank you for the recommendation. I hope you enjoy The Simple Thing.
So lovely to find a knitting blogger from Brisbane, Australia. I’m from the Sunshine Coast and also find to hard to find fellow knitters in our climate. Very excited to follow you ❤
I had the same thought! Another reason why I thought I may as well have a go at adding to the Aussie knitting conversation. I'm so happy to have you here 😊
Let us know if you find a soft linen you like feeling up against your throat. It can be so scratchy! I just bought some Seashell by Hobbii and it's a soft blend of cotton, viscose, and linen. I'm looking forward to buying more. I just ordered one skein to feel it and will definitely be ordering more!
Great alternatives! Please have a look at the Nova or the Vigga Scarf of Rikke Ørum. They are beautiful! Right know I´m knitting the Vigga Shawl and it is so fun! Mindless after 3 pattern repeats.🧶💗
I had never heard of the sophie scarf but I really like the look. I've knit something similar though a Drops pattern called "notions of spring" which is knit in moss stitch with a picot edge, they have some more patterns for these small shawls (for free) just look for garnstudio by drops yarn. I added two tassels at the ends because I felt it was missing a little something 😁
Notions of Spring is a gorgeous pattern - how great that the Garnstudio patterns are free as well. I'm sure the tassels were the perfect finishing touch 😁
Just found your channel :) You have such a gentle way about you. Please do not worry that you feel you are being to forward in your knitting thoughts personally I have actually refused to buy the Sofia scarf or shawl because I can tell it is something I can easily figure out myself if I ever wanted to. But I also struggle with petite knit patterns in general because I feel that she does take one basic shape or design, tweak 1 thing and then re-release it as a new pattern. I have many of her patterns and have knit a good number of her baby patterns but I have determined not to knit her patterns anymore due to the above as well as I struggle with her pattern writing style. The novel type of pattern writing just confuses me I need a sort of check of box system, simple directions line by line so I can glance at my pattern and run with it. I know I am in the minority and I am ok with that but it is hard to voice your opinion these days, even when you say it gently, without fear of backlash or cancel culture.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber from the chilly UK. I would definitely get plenty of use wearing any of the beautiful scarves you have shown us. I am now going to start watching your podcasts from the beginning. Thank you so much. ❤
I totally agree with the way she retweaks, then lists as a new pattern, I think the fact she did with with the scarf and wrap is shocking!!! Just money orientated, look at Rebecca Clow for example of decency!
Thank you so much for this comment. It made me feel much better and more confident to voice my opinions in my videos. 🩷 I have to admit, I was a little bit worried that I would get some backlash - I even reached out to a trusted knitting family member from overseas to get her thoughts on it before I posted! Thanks again for watching and for your kind comment.
Hi! Just found you and love your podcast. I’ve made 4 of The Simple Thing scarves. I increased until I wanted to and decreased when I wanted to using a single skein of yarn. It turned out whatever size I had for the yarn. I have loved all of them!
They're so addictive aren't they! I think we will all have drawers and drawers full of them before long. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment :)
@@YourKnittingBestie YES!! I’ve kept 2 and given 2 away! And I will 100% make more, but you’ve inspired me to try a more textured scarf! And since I live in the northeast USA, I’ve got plenty of cold scarf weather! Have a great day and can’t wait til your next episode!!
Fantastic! Thanks for these suggestions. I knitted the Sophie scarf twice (one with i-ribbing on the edge which looked fantastic) and one without. I'd like to knit more of these as they're great gifts to make for others... now I have some more patterns to consider. Thank you!
Thankyou Nadine , I love your videos and how you explain the pros and cons of choice . I love too how you explain your choices as I live on the east coast of Australia too! With a bit cooler climate further south . You explain things so well , very pleasantly and keep to the subject . Just Brilliant 🎉🎉
So glad you popped up on my You Tube today - it is so nice to watch a podcast which is in the same hemisphere as me. I am from Pretoria South Africa and have similar weather to you except my winter is a little colder !!! I am also obsessed with the Sophie scarf and am about the 3rd knit my third one 😊
Hello! Your climate sounds absolutely perfect. Just enough cold enough to get some very good use out of your knits in winter. Enjoy your third Sophie scarf!! Let me know if you have any styling tips :D
The Minou scarf is so pretty! I am usually a bit fussy when it comes to what scarves I like, but this is just gorgeous! I love both the scarf size and the headband size, and also I think it’s a great skill extender. I have done Fisherman rib before and it’s not too hard, but never cables in it.
It really is stunning, isn't it. I'm pleased to hear you found Fishermans rib to be okay - I hope I have the same experience when I cast on! Thank you for commenting :)
Lovely to have found your podcast. Have now watched all of them 😊. As I am in South Australia, in 38 degree heat at the moment, I am enjoying the challenge of sock knitting too. My goal this year is also to learn Brioche.
Love your video, nice to see a fellow Aussie. Beautiful presentation, now to choose one to knit. Am not an experienced knitter but need something different from my mobius in rib. Thank you so much
So glad that this video was "recommended by RU-vid" - thoroughly enjoyed it. Will go back and watch your other episodes. The Quintet Shawlette by Amber O'Brien has a similar shape, I used it (with one colour) because I fell in love with the neat edged that I saw on the project pages. Knit it twice ..... first time in garter stitch, 2nd time in garter stitch alternating with ribbing. Both were incredibly satisfying knits. I'll knit it again for sure. It was fun to see that quite a few of the patterns you mentioned were already in my favourites. My Little Lace Scarf by Lisa Hannes looks good as well, I purchased that one and got side tracked with Amber's pattern.
Thank you for watching and for your marvellous comment. Both the Quintet Shawlette and the My Little Scarf patterns are just so beautiful. You have wonderful taste!
I'm so glad to have found your channel! It is so hard to be a knitter in HOT climates and to be obsessed with things that are hard to style or just plain impractical where we live. I am in Texas and knitting a great sweater or cozy scarf here is ridiculous. Last summer my city had 80 days with 100F-degree heat, 40 days with temperatures of 105F degrees or higher. It's also very humid here and some days just walking out of the house is like stepping into a sauna. I see knitters in Canada, the UK, and northern states in the US making such lovely cozy sweaters and fluffy cardigans and know those won't work for me. I'm about to knit my first sweater and it's a Tee pattern I'll use sport weight cotton/linen blend to knit.
RU-vid suggested your podcast and I'm so glad it did. I'm in the UK where scarves are a must, so your suggestions have been perfect. I'll now go back to your previous episodes and catch up. Thank you.😊
Wonderful! I felt the first hint of a chill in the morning air this morning, so I'm hopeful that I might be able to whip out a couple scarves as well. Thank you so much for your comment and I hope you enjoy my other videos!
Just knitting a second 'été chic' which has a lovely lace edge. I only knitted 50 repeats for the lace to keep the length shorter and I can wear it as a headband.
This was such a great round up, thank you for sharing these patterns. I purchased a few skeins of yarn last year specifically for the Sophie scarf and am yet to cast one on and now I have more options! 💗
Thank you! I don’t think you’ll regret casting one on, these mini scarfs are a great palate cleanser project to knock over quickly in between bigger projects 🩷 and I remain optimistic that I’ll figure out how to wear them soon 😂😂
Hi from Sunny California, the algorithm sent you my way and glad it did - clear, concise, and approachable. I have knitted three Sophie Scarfs as gifts and appreciate these alternatives. I may try the Solo Scarf.
I appreciate your kind words and am so happy to have found another 'hot weather knitter'! Thank you for your comment and, if you try the Solo Scarf, I hope you enjoy it.
I just want to say how much I liked this video! I just found you on RU-vid. You're so calm and kind and clear. I'm definitely going to look into some of these Sophie alternatives. Regards from Christel in the Netherlands ❤
I really enjoyed your podcast ! I also love to knit and so to find others that share the passion for knitting is always a nice discovery. I haven’t made a Sophie scarf yet but l am interested to look at the other patterns you mentioned in your podcast …Thankyou for taking time to put this podcast out for everyone to enjoy !
Just found your podcast. I’m so excited that you live in warm weather as I do Texas. It’s often very hot and humid and I am hoping that you will have ideas to knit sweaters that you can wear and warm weather.🎉
thanks for the recommendations! i must admit i've never made a sophie scarf because i think i would also find it hard to style, but as it's such a small project maybe i should just jump in and make one and try to style it once i actually have it rather than in my head. if it doesn't work out i can always gift it. my mum sometimes wears those square silk scarves tied around her neck so i think she might like one, so i'll pick a colour that we both like so she can wear it if i end up not liking it on myself.
Thanks for watching!! 🩷 It’s such a quick little project, I totally agree it might be worth just casting on. If you figure out the trick on how to style it please let me know 😂 I found that the slightly longer ones I made were a bit easier to style for some reason - maybe it gives you a bit more to work with when tying it up? Perhaps your mum can give us a masterclass on how she wears her silk scarves, for some inspo 😆
Enjoyed your style, attention to detail, smile and content. I’ve knit the Sophie scarf for a gift and will use your list to make myself a scarf now. Great job!
I also love the Sophie scarf, and I enjoyed how you presented each of these structurally similar patterns. It was a great introduction to some designers that I wasn't familiar with. I'm excited about trying out a few! I am also pleased that you added the Estuary pattern by Tin Can Knits to your Ravelry bundle. It is such a beautiful piece. Tin Can Knits consistently produce sensible patterns, and Estuary is one that is within reach of an adventurous/advanced beginner. Thank you for your very helpful and interesting content :)
Terrific podcast! You provided lots of information in a concise but lighthearted manner! I’ve shared your channel with my knitting group and look forward to more episodes! ❤
That is so lovely of you, thank you for sharing my video and for the kind feedback. I look forward to chatting with you in the comments of future videos 😁🩷
I think I too will be making a Minou scarf. I have knit brioche, and absolutely love the stitch! Thank you for all the inspiration and break down, it definitely made my decision making easier!
Wonderful, I hope you enjoy the Minou scarf! I can't wait to get started on mine. I'm excited to give brioche a crack, especially after hearing that you love it. Thanks for watching 🩷
Thank you for your great recommendations. My favourite is Scarf No 4. Going to add it to my ravelry favourites now! This is the first time I’ve come across you on RU-vid and I really enjoyed your video. Hello from a cold and wet UK! 🌷
Hi!!!!!❤really enjoyed ur podcast and chat sbout the sophie scarf!!i have made 5 now!!!!all different yarns and weights!!!love the pattern!!!!the one on my needles now is bigger snd just made it my own!!!!more decreases and wider etc!!!!enjoyed all the different styles!!!thsnks so much Elaine ⛄ in Canada ❤🏠
Hello from sunny Sydney! It’s always fabulous to find a new knitting bestie 😆 Thank you for introducing me to the Minou! I’ll definitely be casting on that scarf this year too - looks perfect for a beautiful skein I’ve had lying around in my stash for far too long now.
Very much enjoyed all these scarf versions you shared. I have knit 3 Sophies myself and have plans to do a few more. I may choose one of the other lovely scarves instead. Thank you!
Great recommendation and I have added to my bundle. Love the inclusion of three stitch patterns and absolutely beside myself about each scarf being named after the witches from Charmed. So fun!
Another scarf with similar features is Riptide135 by Jennifer Shiels Toland, which contains both a scarf and shawl patterns. Btw, I liked your podcast.
I really like your video. You are so calm that I found it very relaxing to watch. I have knit a lot of things just to try out different techniques. I hope you give brioche a try!
Enjoyed your video. I have made 3 Sophie scarves and like the idea of varying the stitch pattern. Great ideas, I liked Scarf #4 and the Chain scarf. Your voice tone is soothing. Looking forward to more videos 😊
I just found your podcast channel and really enjoyed it! I live in Istanbul, Turkey where the weather is only rarely cold enough for a scarf or shawl, like you mention about Brisbane. I just bought the pattern for the minou scarf and hope to give the pattern a try on the weekend. Thanks for a fun podcast to watch while knitting.
I know what you mean about the Sophie scarf. I've just finished my third one in about two weeks. Someone recommended the Workday scarf. It is a free pattern on Ravelry and I think it is just really pretty. I plan to use an icord on the straight side. I plan to start it tonight.
Helloooo!!! Thank you for this beautiful video! You have such a lovely presence, and I loved "spending" time with you! I have just finished a Sophie scarf, and they are rather addictive. 😅 Have a lovely day! ❤
Love how you have your scarf styled. Did you wrap front to back to front and then tuck the each end from the top down? Maybe you can demonstrate in a future video. Thank you ❤
I can absolutely do that for you! I put it on in the same way that you would if you were going to tie a knot at the front - but instead of tying a knot, I tuck both ends behind the band and cross them over 🩷
Hellooo! I'm an Aussie living in Austin, TX. Another hot location - although we have weird freezing temperatures occasionally in winter. I loved your podcast. I really enjoyed that you mulled over your options at the end and then picked your future project. I'd like to knit a sophie scarf for my sister but I'm not sure if it would be too itchy around the neck. Maybe in a superwash...
Hello! How are you liking Austin as compared to Aus? The freezing temps would be fantastic (occasionally) for a knitter! Thank you for your lovely comment - I wondered if I should have picked my pattern out ahead of time but I was hoping it would come to me as I spoke :P I can vouch for a super wash - I made a couple using Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply and they came out lovely and soft - no problems with itching.
Very much enjoyed this podcast. Watched your channel for the first time. I have purchased the Minou scarf - I had testknit for this designer a different pattern and the half-fisherman rib is not difficult at all. Will be watching for the finished product…may cast on myself soon…
That's wonderful to hear, thank you for the lovely feedback. Did you test knit another of the 'Minou' patterers? They're so beautiful. I'm glad to hear the half fisherman's rib shouldn't be too difficult!
I live in Canberra and it definitely gets cold enough in winter to wear a Sophie Scarf. I’ve made two, and enjoyed the simplicity and speed of making them - plus I paired them with amazingly soft yarn, so it was a delight to knit. CadyJax Knits Podcast had some awesome suggestions on how to style them. I enjoy wearing one as a headband - it keeps my ears warm in the cold weather, but I don’t overheat like I would with a beanie.
Oh yes, Canberra weather would be perfect for some little scarves! Thank you for the suggestion - I will need to check out CadyJax Knits ASAP. I had never thought to wear one as a headband but I could absolutely see that working well!
I visited this channel today for the first time because it was recommended in another knitting podcast and I'm so glad I did. Thank you for this awesome presentation, this was such a joy to watch and you have definitely inspired me to pick the Minou Scarf as my next project. It's so gorgeous! I will make a light fingering weight version of it though. Also, since you are from Australia and in a mild climate as you mentioned I guess that I perhaps could find some inspiration for lighter garments here every now and then. I live in Europe and everyone over here is knitting warm garments for a big chunk of the year and those make up the content of podcasts as well. But I'm constantly hot and two warm sweaters are all I ever need so I yearn for people who are more into light sweaters, tees, tops or slipovers. Anyway, you have a new , happy subscriber from Germany.
I'm definitely your gal for some lighter projects! How exciting to have another person doing the minou scarf as well :) Thank you so much for subscribing and I hope you enjoy my videos 🩷
I just found your podcast and really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for all the great pattern ideas. I did subscribe and will look forward to your next podcast. All the best to you.
Wow! I’m reading some other comments stating this RU-vid popped up on their feed, mine too. I’m so glad! My favorite scarf is the Coral Reef. It’s a midsized one, mock cables. Long, narrow triangular scarf, perfect for my Pacific Northwest home.
Hello from Canada. I just finished the Gold Leaf Scarf (Ravelry pattern) and am very pleased with it, nice lace pattern along one side with Icord edges. I added 5 additional pattern repeats to get length that works for me. Next will be Scarf #4. Thank you for the recommendation.
I have just submitted subscribed to your Chanel because you mentioned alternatives to the Sophie Scarf. Thank you for the lovely podcast. I am from Cape Town, South Africa ❤❤😊
Subscribed! Enjoy your "hang out" vibe. Warm weather here in So Cal too, much of the year anyway. We're rather soggy (we love it and need it) at the moment. Cotton/merino still is more like wool than cotton to my hand (KFO). Cotton/linen blend might be nice with a little stretch (nylon?). Great videos, Nadine!
Thank you for the roundup on the Sophie Scarf alternatives, my favourites list on Ravelry has a few more patterns now. Love the Scarflette (I love lace designs as well as cable design) I haven't seen that one before. I can add a design, is a bit on the longer side, but can be modified to be smaller, is the Estuary by Tin Can Knits. I loved making that one. Thank you for another entertaining episode, looking forward to the next one
I’ve just added Estuary to my Ravelry bundle, what a beautiful pattern! And I really do have a soft spot for Tin Can Knits, I just love their designs. Thank you for the recommendation 😁 I agree the Scarflette is absolutely beautiful!
Hi Nadine! I really enjoy your vlog. I have a well paying job (which, I assume, so does a lawyer in Brisbane... ;) ) so I often buy patterns from indie designers even if I don't make the project. I am stoked to help them. I think you should commit to more than ONE gift knit! Do the Minou *and* the other one you like. I haven't made a Sophie but, yeah, the internet is a little crazy with the Sophie. That makes me, Miss Mary Quite Contrary, want to do something OTHER than a Sophie, so this episode was really timely. I'm still not sure which one I'll do (though last week I was looking at the Grab & Go pattern and one other whose name I can't remember. I'm knitting Hermione socks as I "watched" your podcast, so I'll have to go back and study your 10 scarves more carefully. (I did see your textual disclaimer about not buying reverse-engineer-able patterns, and I can see that point, but still...) Are you familiar with the really amazing creator, Handmade By Caroline? She lives in Perth, so she's not particularly close to Brisbane (I'm impressed that I know that without looking at a map. lol), but she is a master creator. She sews and knits *all* of her clothing and even makes her shoes. Check her out! handmadebycarolyn.com.au/. I also really like Almost Knitting, who is a vlogger in Australia. She's a high school math teacher, and I can't remember where she is, exactly, but it might be Sydney.
Hello! So generous of you to support indie designers as much as you do. I'm sure it's very appreciated by you. I have to admit I had a bit of a Miss Mary Quite Contrary response to the Sophie Scarf at first as well! It took me a while to get around to trying it! I'll definitely look up the two creators you mentioned. Thanks for your comment (and apologies for the TRAGICALLY late response from me 😂)
I just found your podcast. It was fun to watch and while I did, I was working on Avenue by Galt House of Yarn. It's free and looks similar to the Sophie scarf. I enjoyed seeing the patterns you found. Most were new to me and I always appreciate Inspiration. I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to work out a pattern from a finished photo when it's for personal use. I'm looking forward to checking out your other episodes.
My first time watching and I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast. So glad You Tube sent you my way. I am very partial to Four of a Kind shawl collection. There are 6 one-skein shawls in the collection, with instructions to adapt the shallow crescent into a triangle. And there is also a knitted cuff to hold your shawl in place. Looking forward to the next podcast. Greetings from Western Canada.
I've just added Four of a Kind to my bundle, what a beautiful pattern! And great value with the different variations and additional information which is included. Thank you for the terrific recommendation and for watching :)
Thank you for the lovely podcast. Subscribed! I recommend the Riot scarf by Sandra Paul or 22.5 degree scarf by Martina Behm, for people who live in colder climates. That little bit of triangular shape does keep you warmer. Also, there is no I-cord edge which speeds the process along if you just want a scarf right away.
Three out of four seasons I find myself wearing a scarf, shawl, caplet... well you get the idea 😂. I love the idea of these thin but long enough to wrap close scarves. Lots of good choices thank you.
