Going to say it again, Andrei😁: Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic > Khaki Field Mechanical. It's not just the motor, the day you check one out you'll get it. Another great edition too, sir. The Certina dial colour, chef's kiss.
I have the Hamilton Pilot Pionner which I think is a fair step up from the khaki fields, and you can’t do tool without mentioning a Sinn - 556a has more tool character than the Tudor and Modern Explorer put together
@@dparis2172 as a field watch the explorer is now defunct, white gold on a tool watch with a scratch magnet bezel!!?? The Tudors Faux aging I find trying way too hard. The H link bracelet on the Sinn and black and white contrast, specifically pairs down everything to create what the watch should be, an instrument to use in the field.
Some awesome picks here! I really love that Certina you have. I don’t think the Sarb was based on the Explorers Identity at all though. Completely different watches except they are both black.
That Mido Multifort is an absolute stunner, shame that for us in the 8-inch wrist (or just under) audience, it will probably wear too small. Gonna go and try it on though, as I love the way it looks. Mido is so underrated, a bit like Certina, but some of their latest offerings are so well executed, and offer incredible value! Great video as always!
Awesome Video, I love my Seiko sbdy113j1 the land tortious with metal bracelet, great compass bezel and signal directions on the case back. Strap monster on all nylons, nothing says field watch more than a watch with a compass. 😊
Lovely video once again Andrei. Recently got the chance to fit the 36mm Explorer and that for me definitly underlined that it is the perfect watch. But all these great field watches have something on offer, but I would prefer them all with slight tweaks to make them even more perfect. The Khaki Field mechanical is a gorgeous 3 hander, but would be perfect with a 100m WR, the Tudor Ranger would be perfect in a couple of mm smaller (I get why they don't, but that shot next to the explorer definitly shows that the dial size is just a bit off. I love certina, but that date window looks out of place, the Timex Lug to Lug and sizing is a bit to big, but estheticly its a winner. All just tiny nuances which for me make them fall short against a powerhouse. Do really like the Super Antartic, and definitly will hope to stumble upon a Mido to try it on, but for now in this category my money still goes to the Black Bay 36 ;) BTW, can't fault the alpinist, I wore the mountain glacier on my wedding day ;)
haha! Congratulations! Solid piece to be worn on such an important day! :) As for the Ranger, exactly, if you love the size range of BB36 or the explorer 1 size, Ranger it is a bit too large and tall unfortunately. And the Multifort, worth throwing an eye over it when you have the chance. Cheers, Roy! :)
That Longines is really nice. Pricey though... I'd like to nominate Serica's 4512 Commando. Except for having a screw-down crown on a mechanical watch, it has s a terrific, no-nonsense, timeless design. Admittedly, I'm a sucker for the broad arrow handset. The California dial variant is also worth a look.
At 9'41" you show the Seiko SPB201J1 but with a wrong legend (SARB033-launched 2008) in the top left of the screen. I am a huge fan of these Alpi as I have the SARB 017 and the SPB199J1. From your video I would like to try the Nivada Super Antartic in it's 3-6-9 dial layout.
Another top video BB. Personally I find it hard to beat the Hamilton Khaki mechanical black dial on the NATO strap. A no nonsense easy to read at a glance watch that does not attract attention. It has one job and does it very well. Confession time I own this watch. The Prospex Alpinist is an interesting addition to this list, I love the watch design and for once I'm not put off by the non colour matched date wheel, maybe it's the cyclops I just don't know but I like mine, the strap takes an age to break in though but I think it's worth it. I love the Explorer 1 in 36mm, it's still a tool watch that maintains function over form, I love it and hope to get one some day. The Ranger is another favourite and is great value for money given the spec. I tried it just after release and really liked it but another watch was higher up on my list. Just a thought on some other considerations for the at a glance legibility, the Tudor BB36 black dial and the Hamilton Titanium automatic. Thoughts welcome and thanks for sharing. Of course to include every field watch option this video would never end so thanks for the suggestions. I do like that Certina DS-2, may be worth adding to my watch 'watch' list.
I think of the SARB as more of a sports watch than a field watch. I wouldn’t call it a dress watch, but it’s more dressy than I would expect for a field watch. Ditto for the Mido.
"Field watch" means they have to have ONLY number indexes, that's how they are distinguishable from other categories. That's pretty much an industry standard at this point. Pilot watches and Field watches differentiate from their large dial size (40+mm), numbering style (Flieger A/B), hand designs and 12'O Clock arrow mark. Some of the watches you showed here are not Field watches at all, they are GADA watches, which is also my Fav category of watches. Also most field watches look the same to me, I don't like spending Hamilton like money for a Seiko design like watch.
Whilst I'm not huge into the field watch genre, there are some on this list like the two seikos (or khaki auto that wasn't featured) that are trully stunning
The Longines and the Certina both have stunning dials! They are my favorites from your list. The Alpinist would be my third choice. Excellent video as always. 🥃
Nice vid Andrei, but a few are borderline 'field' in my opinion. If one really appreciates the legibility and purpose of the field watch(which was it's intention) then simplicity is the way to go.I picked up a flawless CWC Mellor 72 last year from a friend who had the field watch virus and bought a Hamilton Khaki Field two weeks after the CWC(silly boy) so he sold me the CWC,infinitely better in my opinion,38mm,simple dial and old British heritage.Have a great day.
Good selection. I've heard in a recent interview that Nivada will release their Super Antarctic in 36 mm. Baltic has projects to make a field watch too, no details or estimated time of arrival though
Don't know what to say, not sure if a 36 mm version is a smart move cost wise from their side. As for Baltic... if they come up with fair prices for the movements offered, I will put my name on the list for preorder :) Cheers!
Theres a few i have issue with such as the nivada and certina. I believe al field watches should have numbers on dials, not lines or triangles solely. I dont think even taking them hiking is something I'd do
Have to disagree about the SARB033 because: 1. It's discontinued and 2. It's more everyday/dressy than it is a field watch. I'd suggest the Orient Star Sports Outdoor aka Explorient there. As for the Khaki Field, you can't forget the Khaki Field Auto (100m wr!) and the Khaki King which are better looking and, if you shop around, can find for about the same price.
Interesting choices here! Nivada looks great. I bought recently Bulova Hack, also a good example of a field watch (although with weak WR). BTW Formex Field seems also a great example of a field watch. I see that you lean towards more "dressy" field watches, while I most likely prefer the more "military" ones.
Bulova Hack is cool, I have to try that one as well. Formex wise, I'd try their diver rather than the field, but yes, both are good looking. as for fields choices, I feel you :)
If the current Explorer is anything like the 114270 or 214270 I had, it's not a strap monster at all by design...since Rolex notoriously makes the spring bar holes too close to the case...which leaves no room for even thin straps...hated this on my explorers.
Another winner production my friend. The Mido Multifort blew my mind …..I thought I would want the Ranger, but I’m waffling on that. I really am loving what Certina and Mido are doing. 😮
Hello to all! As usual excellent video, Andrei: informative, fun and visually very appealing! Anyway, can’t really fault your list. All the watches shown are magnificent choices at different price points and I found it really interesting that you stretched the Field Watch definition in some cases. So I’ll just tell you about my newest (underrated) purchase, which I think could have easily made it to your list: the Zodiac Olympos Field Auto ZO9713. Iconic case shape, beautiful dial and fantastic legibility, brushed all around and 200m WR. What do you think?
I'm sorry but I have both Certina DS-2 and DS-2 turning bezel, the endlink of the steel bracelet is different. If you hold both in hands you'll see one is longer, the springbar is not at the same spot. I've tried.
what?! this bracelet is certainly from a Turning bezel and it fits perfect the red dial case version, like it was made for it. could this red version be different case wise than the 2022 DS-2? hmm...
@@BraveBeaters I just tried again with the turning bezel's bracelet on the regular DS-2, there's a big gap between the case and the endlink. It holds in place but I wouldn't trust it. The other way, DS-2 regular bracelet put on the DS-2 turning bezel is impossible to get the springbar in place. Weird that it fits with yours 🤔
Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical - the definitive field watch - the ‘Submariner’ of field watches, if you will - but if you want an authentic, true field watch it has to be a CWC
Love the video and the entire list is conceptually best for covering different price ranges. are you planning for the review of mido tv big date review? if not can you please? love from India.
Very good video, you've gained a subscriber, I have a Damasko DS30 which I use as a beater/field watch and it's gradually become my go to watch, good looking, great quality, tough, slim and very accurate.
Hi 👋 I do very much enjoy your videos, your passion for the subject is obvious in each little detail of your recordings! 👍Thank you for your work! I was wondering what your thoughts are on a more affordable Field watch that uses a solar movement, and promises toughness …. like the VAER C5 Tactical Field Quartz - 40mm USA?
Thank you :) Usually I am looking at the affordable range when I choose watchds for review. And I cover affordable pieces from known brands because there are tons of micros and I don't know how to make the difference between the good ones vs the less good ones :D
@@BraveBeaters I am not sure about VAER being a good one, but I think it is an interesting one ….. since they seam to try to somewhat bring watchmaking back to the USA 🇺🇸🤷🏻♂️ I myself am not a US citizen, but would love to see a new (once well known) watchmaking powerhouse back on the landscape 😄 Made in…🇨🇭… 🇯🇵… 🇨🇳 …🇮🇹 …🇫🇷 …🇩🇪 …🇬🇧…..why not a bit more of made in 🇺🇸
The SARB017 Alpinist is one of my favorite watches ever made. I have watches that are more expensive in my collection and I would more easily part with all of them over letting the Alpinist go. That said I think Seiko sort of dropped the ball on every version they have made after that point. The cyclopse and display case back ruin the dial and make the watch thicker than it needs to be. Also for whaterver reason they got rid of the snegraved S on the crown which just makes it look cheaper. I think its great they improved the movement, but pretty much any other change I dont like on them. That said I love the version of the Alpinist I have and its probably one of those watches that will stay in my collection for the rest of my life.
Can't help but laugh that a Longines watch made for the French navy has practically 0 water resistance. Supreme confidence ? The Mido is a beauty....but the Longines Spirit, or are you counting that as an aviation watch? Excellent content, again !
Hi Eric, exactly the Spirit was on the list, but removed in the last moment. although has the perfect characteristics of a field, I consider it a pilot. Longines is funny, yes. there was an entire discussion about the 30m WR of MN. some say, they put 30m WR as a homage for the vintage one. (where in reality it should have 100m) not sure what to say. Thank you :)
Nice choices there! For me, perfection lies with the 36 Explorer, but I've a soft spot for both the SARB Alpi and Khaki. Actually I'm surprised this is a genre of watch ignored by most brands. It's such a versatile, satisfying type of watch but probable harder to hang the hype on! I do like that Longines, just wish they'd made it a bit smaller and skipped the fauxtina'd face. Another addition I'd suggest is the 37mm Longines Spirit and (just about) the 38mm black dial Aqua Terra. And the 36mm OP is a winner too...
Nice selection, all mentioned should be part of a solid filed watches collection. I have to grab an AT but also an OP, not sure if 36 or 40. But they are both good for the channel. :) Cheers!
THIS VIDEO IS TOTAL LIE. Certina, Mido is NOT FIELD, rolex explorer EX-EXPLORER-EXPLORE FOR EXPLORATION NOT FIELD. FIELD WATCH IS SIMPLE WITHOUT METAL STRAP WITH ARABIC NUMBERS 24H.
