Denmark has a border dispute with Canada over Hans Island between Greenland and Canada. "When Danish military go there, they leave a bottle of schnapps. And when Canadian military forces come there, they leave a bottle of Canadian Club and a sign saying, 'Welcome to Canada.'" They call it the "Whiskey War"

So Canada is having a nice war against the European Canada known as Denmark

They do, but it is more of a territorial war.... Who owns the Nortpole, and the rights for oil in that region.
@jborgen44
@jborgen44 6 лет назад
It's not about oil, Hans Island is way to the south of where the oil and natural gas is. The island lies exactly on the border between Canada and Greenland, and is an important military strategic point. Who ever controls the island controls the seaways to the north. However it's not important enough to go to war over it. Today, i think, it's just the patrols that makes a little fun of it. They are however up there, only seeing a couple of people for months. This however is about oil: news.nationalgeographic.com/content/dam/news/photos/legacy-new/87119_2400x2659-cb1418833802.adapt.710.1.jpg That's what Denmark is claiming. Or did in 2014

You say that Ribe Cathedral was build in 1860. That's wrong. The construction of the cathedral was initiated in 1150 and completed 100 years later in 1250.
@UnintentionalSubmarine
@UnintentionalSubmarine 7 лет назад
Correct, but it is pretty clear that he mispronounces 860 to 1860 (and does this twice in fact with the attested document of 854, mentioned as 1854), and that is correct too in a way as the first church in the location was built in 860.

Well, although Ribe is old and known from early European monastery scripts, here's a mind blowing and little known tidbit: In the flat, sandy lands of western Jutland, sharply delineated from the rest of Jutland by the Jydske Højderyg (Jutland Ridge) because of the meltwaters from the icecap flushing away the light soils and clay, with the icecap remaining in northern and eastern Jutland, there're town names found nowhere else in Denmark, making it probable that they may go back 10,000 years or more. Those are peculiar, monosyllabic names like Tim, He, Bur, No, Ho, Lem and are still found today. Now there may of course be other explanations, but I think they're the oldest villages in Denmark and the reason for this is another thing I discovered: At several places in Jutland you find twinned burial hills from Early Bronze Age lying exactly equidistant from the main country road, telling us that the road was already there at the time of the burial! One of these roads (on Djursland) even had the simple name Alvej, meaning Everyone's road, and was connecting two such twinned burial hills in the south and north of the peninsula, respectively. Many Danish churches are built on older holy places going back to the Stone Age and at two different locations, two holy places from early Bronze Age has preserved the same old names, telling us what they were used for: There's a Virring/Solbjerg combo both west of Aarhus and southeast of Randers - Vi-ring meaning Ring of Initiation and Sol-bjerg meaning the Hill for Sun-worship. Sun worship is related to Bronze Age Denmark... I know, the names alone don't prove this, but finding them twinned, with the same geographical layout adds support to my hunch.

Hallo FTD I'm from Denmark and I want to share a few facts about my country :) 1. There is not an official national dress, however, it depends on what parts of the country you were in, in what were wildly different clothes, so in one area men wore huge baggy pants, in another women wore men's top-hats, in another people wore masks that covered their whole face when outside. It is because the Faroe Islands and Greenland have been a part of Denmark for so long that having one standard dress would be like erasing theirs. 2. In the 1800 young people were encouraged to have a romance with someone of their own sex, it was seen as good practice for married without danger of pregnancies, they would do the same things young lovers did and then they got married they would write a sorrowful letter to their partners. 3. In February, we have a holiday called Fastelavn, which is somewhat reminiscent of American Halloween, with undressed children walking around door-to-door and asking about candy. The reason why Fastelavn is not the same as Halloween as Americans knows it, is that Halloween in Denmark means two things: 1. Is Halloween as Americans know it 2. Meaning is Alle hælgens aften or All Hell's Evening in English. And about your quieten about where those in the comments live in Denmark, I'm from west Jylland, near Esbjerg to be more precise.

As an addendum to the way to monitor sick days, Denmark is an absolute gold mine when it comes to research. The high amount of data registrered (sick days are likely one of the many data points) while remaining traceable to unique social security numbers (Which of course is left out to any actual researcher to ensure anonymity) have made some of the best studies possible.

Before moving to Copenhagen 7-8 months ago, I used to live near Ribe and went to high school there. It truly is an incredibly beautiful city, and I recommend visiting it if you ever want to go to Denmark. Fun fact, the high school in Ribe, called Ribe Katedralskole, is the oldest high school in Denmark and all of Scandinavia, and one of the oldest in the whole world. The oldest building still being used is from the fourteenth century, and it’s one of the few schools that still teach both Latin and Greek (other than the first 3 or 6 months of the first year, all high schools do that).

NB Correction: The cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady, or Virgin Mary. Its construction began approx. 1150 and finished 100 years later for approx. 1250. It replaced an older stone church in the same place. Recently, just south of the cathedral, there were Christian graves dating back to the year 850, so Ansgar's church from after 860 was probably also here. The cathedral is the main church in Ribe diocese, which stretches from Tønder and almost to Holstebro. From: www.ribe-domkirke.dk//english/

It's quite windy, outside that high building, so the spindoors went too fast around, that people actually got killed by it, and then, they build that sheltering roof.. I live in Smørum, which is a bit outside of Copenhagen. During the first more than 20 years of my life though I grew up in another little village, called Mørkhøj (Darkhill), neighboor vilage to Herlev.

If you do another fact video about Denmark, here's a few facts: Tycho Brahe introduced empirical testing to the field of astronomy. Ole Römer was the first to postulate and prove that light had a speed, and was able to estimate it. Niels Bohr is the grandfather of the field of quantum physics. the Danish pastries you buy in Denmark are actually Viennese. Denmark once ruled part of England. Denmark was the first slave trading nation(slave trading nation 1650's-1848) in Europe to officially prohibit slave trading in 1792, though the ban first came into effect from 1802, and slavery itself continued in the Danish west indies until 1848. Denmark was the first country in the world to grant legal recognition to same-sex unions in 1989, same sex sexual activity was legalized in 1933 . Nina Bang was the first woman to become a minister in a national parliament in 1924.

We pay alot in taxes, its like 50%, but one thing people missing, is that we have free health care, free school and some people earn money while they have vacation. Beside that, Denmark was a very big country, they own Norge (1380-1814), Sweden (1380-1523), Finland (1380-1523), Greenland (1380-Still own it ), Iceland (1380-1944), Faroe Islands (1380-Still own it ), Northern Germany (1100-1227), Estonia (1219-1346) and some of England (1016-1066)

😂😂😂 Your pronunciation of Danish names and places would improve by 110% if you adopt the simple rule that most shorter Danish words has the stress on the very first syllable. 'Val-demar 'Her-lev 'Jyl-land There are exceptions, dronning Mar-'gre-te and Helsing-'ør (don't know why) and composite words usually have a stress on first syllable in each component word.

Some other information for you (I am from Denmark): The biggest island in Denmark is actually Greenland. Though it has it's own goverment, they are still part of Denmark. We have 1 of the higest taxes in the country, but that gives us alot of things. The most important is that we have free healthcare, and we can freely choose which doctor we want. All danish citizen + visiters with e.g. a working visa, have a yellow card at the same size of a normal creditcard. That card contains all of the information about you doctor, social securitynumber, etc. so we do not use much paper. We also have a foundation that ensures workers to get a paycheck if the company they are working for are declared bankrupt. In danish it is called: "Lønmodtagernes Garantifond". Another difference and why we accept the high income taxes, is because we also meternatyleave plus our mentality in Denmark and scandinavia is about contributing to the nation, so we as a unit can bring the wellfare as high as possible. For a small country we have quite a few world famous people, such as H.C. Andersen, some physicist. The part about our export, do not forget to mention Maersk ("Mærsk" in danish) and "Novo nordisk". The first 1 is 1 of the worlds biggest shipping companies, and they own the biggest containership in the world (they did last I checked). Novo nordisk, is a pharmaceutical company which produces a large amoung og asthma medicine to the world. For a small country we invented a sport "handball" or "håndbold" in danish. You might not know about it, but it is quite pupolar in twestern Europe and some asian countries such as China, South Korea and Japan. Okay according the the danish wikipedia page, it was a danish teacher that are credited for inventing the sport, because he were the first to write a set of rules for the sport. This small country have alot, I mean alot of churches and castles/manors/estates (the last 2, is in Denmark it is main houses which is much smaller than castles, but in many cases they have alot of agricultural land. One final thing, is that almost all danish people until the age of 55'ish knows English, a smaller portion of the danes can also german, france, etc. Kind regards Kim, I hope you can use some of these facts. PS. try and listen to this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h1RXGltx4SI.html (sorry for a link to another channel)

Our queen’s nickname is Daisy. Also Helsingør is the only Danish city (not counting Copenhagen) that has an English name - Elsinore. The city got an English name because of Shakespeare. We were the first country to legalize gay marriage. We were named the happiest country in the world two years in a row. H.C. Andersen (Hans Christian Andersen) was born and raised in Denmark. He is the man behind stories like "the ugly duckling", "the little mermaid" and "the snowqueen" that inspired the disney movie Frozen. We have the term "hygge". It is hard to explain, but it is a feeling of coziness when with friends and family, or alone. We invented the LEGO and have a LEGO-land in Billund. Bluetooth is named after the danish King Harold Blåtand (Blåtand translates to bluetooth) and the bluettoth logo is a combination of the old danish runes for H and B (Harold Blåtand's initials) We have the oldest amusementpark in the world = "Bakken". Those are just some of the facts you could use in a possible part 3

Denmark has a word called "hygge". No other language in the whole world can translate this word expect Norwegian and Sweden, so it's only in Scandinavia. You can maybe translate it to cozy or fun, but it not like that at all. We are a very proud country and we are very proud of the word "hygge" and it's very special for us. The language and the word "hygge" is the key to a lifestyle that makes Denmark the first place in happiness worldwide year after year. "hygge" = a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being

Fun facts about DK: - While lacking in some aspects of LGBT rights, Denmark was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex civil unions in forms of registered partnerships, back in 1989. Being born in the 90s i never thought there were places where stuff like that was not allowed or even illegal, as we'd always been told that it was possible just not in churches. (since 2012 same-sex marriages has been allowed) - Apropos LGBT: Lili Elbe, a dane, was one of the first people in the World to receive Gender Reassignement Surgery - Not unique to Denmark, but nevertheless: Currently, children start learning English already in 1st grade, and has to start a third language (usually German or French) in 5th grade. It is har to find someone in denmark who does not speak English or German fluently as a second language. - Speaking of that, education in Denmark is paid by the state (ie free) and once you turn 18 you can apply for SU, which is a monthly economic subsidy for students (making it possible for students to live while studying without needing to work full time) - Many people (mostly the older generations) are able to undertand both Swedish and Norwegian, as the languages have a bunch of similarities (and speaking of my own parents they watched a lot of Swedish and Norwegian tv as kids because the amount of channels were minimal.) Swedes and Norwegians will tell you that Danes sounds like they're speaking with a potato in their mouth. There's a healthy rivalry between these three countries. - Denmark has been in the lead when it comes to wind turbine energy for a long time. We got them everywhere, but mostly in the water which is a good place, because its windy and it doesnt annoy the people who live there. - Historically we got some notable figures: H. C. Andersen is probably the most popular, the author behind a lot of fairytales such as The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl, The Emperor's New Clothes, etc. - Søren Kierkegaard is a very famous philosopher among other titles. - Niels Bohr: Physicist who made fundamental discoveries in regards to quantum mechanics and atomic structure. - Inge Lehmann: Seismologist and geophysicist who discovered that the Earth's core consist of a solid inner core and a molten outer core. - H. C. Ørsted: Physicist and Chemist who discovered the early steps of electromagnetism. He was also a close friend to H. C. Andersen - Mærsk is the biggest container shipping company in the world. - Lego - Sydney Opera House was drawn by a Danish architect - Denmark doesn't have bedrock (which is why we don't have mountains), the only bedrock Denmark has (besides Greenland and the Faroe Islands) is on the island of Bornholm, which is located to the east, kinda below Sweden. Half of that island is made of bedrock. - Oh yeah, also vikings is a big thing.
