All really useful. Genuine thanks. Sorry but just one minor error - you repeat the myth that you can only use carbon steel to strike a ferro rod. Actually both carbon steel and stainless can be used for this (or even a shard of glass if that's all you've got). The myth comes from confusion between two methods - using a ferro rod and using a flint and steel to create sparks- If you are using the flint and steel method then that's where only carbon steel can be used. Not looking to nit pick just trying to help any newbies out.

I've used a cheap pocket knife with my Ferro rod and that was like stainless steel.

I agree. I had my in- laws use a ferro rod on vacation last year and the girls were using rocks with a good edge to spark the ferro rod and start a fire. Carbon steel you need for the old fashioned "flint and steel". Thanks for sharing!

He always uses the word "firesteel" interchangeably between a hardened carbon steel striker, and a ferrocerium rod. It gets to me as well, thanks for pointing it out yet again. To me, a firesteel is a hardened striker meant to make a spark with a hard rock. Ferro rods are not steel.... I've be using and practicing with flint and steel since I was in grade school. So, ferro rods are super easy!
@tribalismblindsthembutnoty124
Right. It wasn't easy but he demonstrated that it would work

FYI - Ferro rods will spark with most any sharp edged tool, metal, ceramic, glass or flint. You do not need carbon steel to spark a ferro rod. Wow!

Another option is to use it to Jimmy open cheap door locks (not deadbolts). Slip the hook or the opposite side behind the catch and pull or push to move the latch

You don’t need carbon steel to strike a ferro rod (although you do with a true flint and steel). Even a shard of broken glass will strike sparks from a ferro rod.

A good video for such a cheap tool you can find anywhere. Sometimes used to open poorly fitted doors without looking like a tool for that purpose. I would not carry one to replace a knife, but often end up using my knife for jobs that a scrapper should be used.

Not sure if this will even be seen but I’m Just starting to prep. Now my wife looks at me like I’m crazy. Any tips on how to get her to understand? Do I think something major will happen in my lifetime??? A little but not a lot. But I would rather have it and not need it then the opposite. Also I look at it like if I don’t need it, it can be passed down to the kids. I do believe something will happen in their lifetime. It would make me feel much better knowing they are somewhat prepared. Any advice on how to get her onboard with prepping?

I'm a painter by trade currently working doing specialty Concrete Coatings a painter's 5 in 1 can be an amazing tool depending what brand you get if you buy the Purdy 6in one it is a very sturdy tool and I have done a lot of work with them other than scraping and opening paint cans depending on the one you get it also has a Spike protruding off to the side as a bit of a can opener that we used to cut out the rims on 1-gallon cans so we can use them as cut pots we also use a doping cracks and stuff the five and one is an awesome tool and it's one that I'm going to keep with me as much as possible outside of work

Stainless will strike a ferro rod like anything with a 90 degree spine, what it wont spark is flint/ churt. That's why survival experts recommend high carbon, even though very few people carry or have access to natural flint and churt stones

With flint and steel the steel gives off the sparks But with a steel and faro rod the rod gives off the sparks. So with a faro rod my stainless steel knife work. But a high carbon steel you can use a hard sharp stone like flint or something else. A stainless steel knife is a good knife as a dive knife. And a faro rod is softer metal that is why it works.

Hey brother, could you do a video series on HOW to build an SHTF/Bug Out pick up truck?? Which brand/year is the most reliable, longest lasting, inexpensive? What to look for in the way of engines-gas, diesel, displacement, 4X, crew cab, shells, equipment such as winches, tire size, brand, composition, bumpers, EMP protection, etc.? I know a little about 4X Jeeps but almost ZERO when it comes to pick ups. I'd guess there're many who'd appreciate some guidance on this subject. Canadianprepper has a pretty intriguing build which is what got me thinking about this topic. Thanks for all you do!
