I'm from Vietnam, and we talk about everything and anything, of course you would start a light conversation with stranger, and the more you know people, the more personal questions you can ask. One thing we try to avoid is to bring up some questions that would stir up their emotions and make them cry, like asking about a closed person to them who just passed/died. We are still considerate to not upset people unnecessarily. I have lived in Canada for 30 years, and wish I know about this earlier, so people don't look at me in strange ways when I ask the wrong questions. Thank you very much for your lessons. You're are one of my best teachers. And I appreciate your lessons very much! Stay well and happy!💯❤

Why? The only one of these questions that could possibly trigger me is "Are you pregnant?" As a 67 yo American man, I have always found it humorous when somebody addressed me a "ma'am", but I suppose that I might be triggered, if they caught me in the right mood, by asking if I was pregnant.

Hey Vanessa! This is Twinkle from India. We have the same taboo topics as in US and even more. Asking about family, kids and marriage are a kind of taboo talks, but actually, in our nation, these are really common questions one asks, usually in small towns and villages and also by elders in city area. These questions are not considered good and old fashioned but still there are many people who ask. But it's considered as a bad manner.

Thank you so much for your great lesson, Vanessa. Let me share my experience with you and others. I'm from Korea and have lived in an English speaking country for over 11 years. Once I worked with such a lovely and sweet girl who is originally from this country. One day, we were chatting with another colleague who is from China and he said he has a young sister who is 9 years younger than him in China. Then she asked him if his parents divorced and his sister was his half-sister. I am so sure she never meant to hurt him and I understand that it is so common(?) to have parents separated and to have stepbrothers and/or half-sisters in Western culture. But in Korea (and possibly in China)we never ask this kind of question and also never mention to the person even though you know it unless he/she wants to talk about it. And one more thing, I seriously want to ask Europeans, Please stop asking me(or to other Koreans) if do I eat dogs when we just meet!!!!!!! When I travel to Europe, I had that same question over and over. It was like this, European: Where are you from? Me: I'm from Korea. European: Oh, Korean! Do you eat dogs? Me: (Oh, not again!!!!!!!!!) This question is like, you ask Germans if their grandfather was a Nazzi!!!

When I had just moved to London, my neighbour - who is from India - asked me about my husband’s job, and the name of his company, when we were having small chat at our parking space. I felt a little uncomfortable with that, because I thought it was a very direct question, and we just met. But at that time, I wanted to have good relationship with him, so I told him my husband’s name and his company's name. I expected him to tell his company’s name, too, but he didn’t; and I couldn’t ask because I had my hands full trying to understand his fast English.😅I don't know if it's common in cosmopolitan city. I am Japanese.

Thanks for sharing, Heichi. I have the same feeling as you. In the US, it would be rude to ask specific details about someone's company or where they live, etc. when you first meet. Usually we ask general questions, so "What do you do?" (this means "What is your job?") is possibly okay if you have been talking for a few minutes together about small talk. But it's more unusual to ask about your husband's job.

It raised a question to me. Is it grammatically correct to say "your this video". In my native language we have it. But in English I haven't heard such a thing?

Seeing as we are talking about prejudice and all, I think it's important to implant the culture we have 3 Americas, and the "american culture" you reference in the video it's just the north American. This subject is growing nowadays, and I think we have to talk about it (sorry for my mistakes, I'm learning English)

I have heard that they are told that French has been going to become the International Language and because of that the French hate English(language and people) By the way I love French and I'm learning that in parallel with English. So I guess this is going to be a taboo question in France: Vous est marriee? Ou sur d'argent de un personne😉. Am I right?

@@mateo_on_youtube hi 😄 I'm French and I can assure you, we do not hate English people or language, it's true that a lot of French people don't speak English but it's just because of the teaching at school 😅 and yes, asking someone how much they make per month is super rude and "are you married? "is not that rude, it's just considered weird 😅😄 that is actually so cool you're learning French ! 😄😄
@mateo_on_youtube
@mateo_on_youtube 3 года назад
@@Ja-wu2jc That's weird. I thought in the Europe the teaching methods, esp. for languages are quite well and it's only a problem for developing countries like Iran(my own country). If it's not right so why do people come to Europe to study(if they don't know how to teach their own students English!?)
