(10) THE HISTORY OF TOP OF KEYWAY TENSION WRENCHES

UPDATE!!!! Ken Persson of Peterson Manufacturing has admitted he did not invent the top of keyway pry bar, as he previously claimed for over 15 years!! He admitted it on his website as of May 2024! Below is a link to a follow up video reading his admission and the backlash I received from this video.
• (146) PETERSON ADMITS ...
Here is his statement...
"I recently saw that the English wrote a book for their intelligence people on "How to make lock-picks" and in that book they had a square cut "top of key-way” turning tool. (That would be bottom of key-way of course in Europe). So I stand corrected, I did not invent the flat top of keyway turning tool, I just designed the first that I knew of! :-)"
-Ken Persson admitting he didn’t invent the TOK PryBar!!!
Below is a link to his website, where he admits he didn't invent this tool, in the paragraph, 3rd from the bottom...

Tipene sent me the link to this video. I really don't understand Petersons attitude towards other lock pick manufacturers and even resellers. He is his own worst enemy sometimes. The video is very good and have subbed. I've also learnt a lot and appreciate the research you have done on the subject matter. I am sure I have a digital copy of that manual somewhere I will have to have another look. People have asked me to make bent and curved bars that many times I've lost count but I think I will definitely offer them soon so watch this space

thank you for watching. I came very close to purchasing a ton of your tools last night, but I need to hold off for a month. I would like to contact you in the coming weeks to get your advice on my purchase, and which set would be the best representation of your company. I will probably be working with $200-300 range for that purchase. I'm new to the UK market of picks, and would like to make sure I get your product information correct for my review of them. I will be making a part 2 to this video with updated information given to me by Christina Palmer and other contributors with more factual and historical perspective.

Thanks for adding this overview online. There are a few things I'd like to add, one is quite simple: While pin-side is a go-to for many locks, it doesn't work on all. For very thin keyways with deep set pins, it's quite common to have any turner be in your way. My bias is of course European locks, where my go-to are currently modified Multipick small turners SP-41, for example. We cut off the tip halfway after the bend. As a lefty I'm a lot more picky and don't find the regular tools work for me. Some of my prybars have a 45 degree bend, currently. As well as more elaborate turners, rarely seen. Mad Bob made a set of nine different turners, three of each: left, right, and flat. Law lock Tools, maker of the first 2mm bars, has mad Bob's turner bending jig. LLT has currently five sizes on offer, and has great Z bars as well. My ideal set currently would be a turner that can expand and be locked in the keyway. Alternatively, I'd like to see a set which can be combined in virtually every thickness. Something like a gauge pin set, but for turners.

Very good points, and thank you very much for the information! I know of two manufacturers that will be meeting both of your goals and wishes very soon. Stay tuned.

I purchased the sandman pick from Sparrows a few years ago and I was suspicious that sparrows made up the myth of “Sandman” to sell picks. Haha, thanks man for putting that lingering question to rest. Thanks man, your videos are exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks man, take care

This was the 2nd of your videos i watched today. Really enjoyed watching a newer poster on this subject. Bosnian bill was my first intro to lockport and LPL, came soon after. His format is legendarily popular (shorter, concise videos I mean...) I really appreciated that you went in way further without being too much of the day. Subscribed n lookin forward to more of the videos.

What a useful video. Thanks! If I have three sizes of anything, I like to think of Americans when it comes to color coding: red, white, and blue = thin, thicker, thickest. Black is a good color if there is a forth size: red, white, blue, black. Etc. I think Peterson is more protective of his market, while the other guys are willing to share.

Learned a lot from this vid. To be honest I thought I was the only one who noticed that top of the key way is the best way to get feedback from any locks. I personally don't own the ergo turner but I can see how comfortable it is. Just wish there is a easier way to carry them around with my CI case.

@TotenAuge
@TotenAuge 10 месяцев назад
@@sandman_locksport It's been awhile, but I will try to find it. I remember it was in an archive. I do remember the publication year as being 1955. I happened upon it by chance actually, as I was then researching pin tumbler history starting with _Yale._ Also, years ago I remember seeing a booklet from sometime in the '60s which had a tok bar-style tensioner drawing inside. It was not the "pry bar" as we see today, but it was still a vertical tensioner. Ken had to know these things, as he is not much older than I. Anyhow, I will try to find the pdf of that manual, so you can print off a copy.
@TotenAuge
@TotenAuge 10 месяцев назад
Not sure why, but every time I post a link (Paladin Press - Boulder, CO circa 1950), RU-vid deletes my post. Will try again another time.
@sandman_locksport
@sandman_locksport 10 месяцев назад
@@TotenAuge it’s a miss print, that’s not correct, paladin press didn’t become a company until the early 1980s. They acquired the original publication that was published in 1972. So whatever source says 1955 is incorrect in my opinion. But you can email it to me. Sandmanryu@protonmail.com
@TotenAuge
@TotenAuge 10 месяцев назад
@@sandman_locksport According to similar sources, _Panther_ _Publications_ (founded 1970) became _Paladin_ _Press_ from '74-'75 when cofounder Robert Brown was bought out by founder Peder Lund. Lund then acquired the rights to reprint *previous* works, including government manuals. If and when I find the print, I will send it to you. I will download to have a physical copy. Eventually, I will find it. Regardless of the original date, "pry bars" have been around long before Ken "invented" (LoL) them. Btw, I enjoy some of your content. You have a knack for it. Have a good day.

Great review of the history and current products, thank you for doing this! When you’ve bent your flat tensioners in the past, did you do it cold or did you heat it up before bending (and if so, how)?

I just put it in a table Vice, and bent it by hand cold. Definitely a little bit sloppy compared to the covert instruments. I prefer theirs by far.
