age - 23 years old from the 16th of february (from 1998 since i always forget to update this)
country - belgium.
languages - i normally speak dutch. obviously also english and my french should be pretty ok. taking german classes now as well.
longboarding since - summer of 2012.
studies - graduated my masters in electromechanical engineering in 2020.
work - working as engineer at 'magcam', we do advanced magnetic measurements and data analysis :)
filmmaking since - i was probably around 10 years old when i bought my first camera.

Enjoy. 39 here. Started with The Rona in 2020. I love it. My biggest challenge besides committing to tricks and steps has been finding the perfect skate spot as Hanz mentioned. I am an introvert and don't mind people being around but too many seems to drain me. I am going to have to get creative and think like a long boarder. 🙃🛹🤙

@@MsValpar Right, it is difficult to find a perfect spot. For me too, because I had to find a spot for my godchild. For me it was important that there are a lot of people (most of them older than 70 years). So I feel better when my godchild will be there without me. The friendly old people will have an eye on her ;)

Tip 11: bring bandaids especially if you’re in public. Dude just got mad at me today for having blood on my leg. I forgot I had started bleeding, otherwise I would’ve at least covered it up in between skating and going in the store. But instead I forgot and just walked in the store with a bloody leg...

I personally didn't bother at first with protective gear, until one day I fell and hurt my elbow quite a bit. And I thought okay, no harm done, just get back on the board. But I found I was now scared to try the trick again, and because of that I kept failing it. So I bought wrist and elbow protection, and I'm still not able to do a no-comply, while that was my go to trick before I fell. If I had worn them from the beginning I wouldn't have hurt myself in the fall and wouldn't have this problem. So yeah kids wear your gear

Tip number 10 best one so far. Started at 23 and I’ve become really comfortable on a bunch of tricks and developed style which was inimaginable when I started. So everyone that wants to start longboarding just go, practice, practice,practice.

I use my old board that has pressure cracks and no pop as my "rain board" if I need to commute in the rain. It's gonna give out on me someday, but hopefully not before my current board loses its pop, so that I can continue the cycle.

This is so useful and really practical tips! I just love the fact that you mentioned there’s no age restriction for longboarding and how we shouldn’t judge ourselves either being too young or too old to start. @Hans, I had a board when I was a kid in the 70s in Chicago. Haven't really been on since. I just bought my first longboard yesterday here in Singapore: I'm 57 and back on it! I was actually going to ask you about music. I find that music makes me skate better 100% :) One thing I'd be interested to know is your opinion on bags. If you don't drive to a skate spot, are there are particular bag styles/longboarding with a bag on tips you'd recommend?

Started a year ago at 56 and I try to skate a little every day. Live near Seattle so pretty much it's either ride in the rain or only ride a couple days a year...but I have dedicated a cheap board and sacrificial bearings for the wet sessions.

Tip no.10 is truth: I’m 40 and just started to learn longboarding last week and have really enjoyed cruising around the parks near my house. I almost didn’t try it thinking that I was too old but glad I gave it a go anyways. Protective gear and helmet help though, and of course watching all your beginner tips videos lol

I dig with the perfect skate spot. I some places feel right when I dance and I'm in sync. Skating in new places is good for consistency.

Honestly, as a beginner, wearing full protective gear is smart. I find that, as a beginner, it gives me the confidence to push myself to do things that are just beyond what I've already done. Without the gear, I don't think I would do that because I would be trying to play it safer. It's a confidence thing for me, too.

Thank you for being so understanding about starting to longboard when you're "older". Age is just a number, and the world is full of false limits we put on ourselves and others. I'm in my 30s and just got my first longboard! :D
