My late husband was a Marine Corps Scout/Sniper. He wound up in a wheelchair at the end of his life. I.was his caregiver at the end, but I was there because I loved him for his mind, his heart, his sense of humor, and didn't think that his worth was defined by the use of his legs. I was, and still am, proud to have been his wife. I always thought I was the lucky one.

I absolutely agree. What Shane won’t be able to do physically he will more than adequately make up for by being loving, fun, educational and kind to his kids. Kids have their own little legs so they can always hop up on dad and give him a hug whenever they want.

I never thought I had any preconceived notions about someone in a wheelchair until I bought my first house in my early 30's. We wanted to tear down the awful suspended ceiling in the kitchen, and a friend of my husband offered to help. (He's been a paraplegic for over 30 years) I was wondering how he was going to help, but when he showed up at our house, he came equipped with a pole and "grabby" thing he MacGyvered together and had no problem. I was so narrow-minded that I didn't realize how resourceful and resilient people can people when faced with an obstacle. He also went on the ride my horse in the next few weeks. He totally changed my perspective and he doesn't even know it, I was too ashamed to tell him. Thank you both for reaching out and teaching people (like me) who may not even know that they have these preconceived ideas how wrong we can be.

On the "wheel chairs ate awesome note" my grandmother was a disability rights activist and her main tool was her chair. Its heavy, and bulky, and it made her and her group hard to arrest. She literally would lay down in front of busses and its was a whole ordeal to remove her and her chair. She was fighting for disability access on public transit.

30 years ago when I was in hs, I showed up on the first day of school expecting to have the same Science teacher that my older brother had 2 years earlier. Instead, a very young, fresh-faced, long-term substitute entered the room and explained that the teacher we all had been expecting had sustained a major spinal injury over the summer (from falling off a balcony and breaking her back). “She has lost the use of her legs, is in rehabilitation, and is currently learning how to be mobile in a wheelchair. She *hopes* to return to the classroom - at least part time - 2nd semester.” After the shock wore off, our class began churning through Science with our new sub (who turned out to be a great teacher, btw, and *still* teaches at my old hs!). At semester, our original teacher *did* return to the classroom (part-time) and mine was one of the fortunate classes to have her as a teacher. The tables and chairs were reconfigured a bit to allow for her wheelchair. She spent much of that first day answering any & all questions .... She told us all sorts of things that we might have been to timid to ask, about her accident, her heath, her chair, her recovery, and so on. Open & honest, full of humor and wit. She demanded respect, not pity. She may have physically sat lower, but was still the “tall” authority. After a few weeks of regular Science curriculum, it occurred to me one day as she visited each of our tables to see how we were progressing on our group projects: her wheelchair and her disability had suddenly become a complete *nonissue* for us. Some kids at school who weren’t in any of her classes still stared sometimes; it was obvious they hadn’t had the same opportunity to feel comfortable. TO THIS DAY I’m *so thankful* that I had her as a teacher. I feel lucky to have been in one of her first classes back. From that semester, and for many years after, she taught her students much more than just Science.

Hey, Hannah and Shane, I just want you guys to know that you guys helped me pass nursing school. I have PTSD and anxiety on account of being in an abusive relationship and having a history of childhood abuse under my belt. Your videos kept me sane as I studied for my last final, I passed only a week ago, but it feels like forever. You have no idea what your channel means to people, and I mean that in the best way possible. I can only speak for myself, but I watch your channel because I want what you guys have. However, I have taken this time to focus on myself and to unlearn all the unhealthy habits, to mature from codependent to interdependent, and to become the person I was always meant to be. For myself. And then, and only then, can I find a relatioship as happy and flourishing as yours. Thank you for listening, and I wish you all the best. Stay safe! ❤️

Hey, glad to hear you found support in these videos. I was born legally blind. When I turned 20, I went through a real struggle. I cried a lot. I cried all through the service at church. I didn't know why I was crying. I realized I was extrordinarily frustrated. It finally came to me that now being thousands of miles from my parents, I was finally doing what I should have done years earlier, mourning my disability. It wasn't self pity. A lot of things were going right. I landed a good job with assistance from no one other than someone filling out the application for me. It came and went in seasons for about a year. I didn't fight it. I embraced it. I fell down in one of those belts of bark dust in a restaurant parking lot. My friend, instead of rescuing me from myself, flopped down there beside me, asking if I was praying and could he join me. Something happened. Fir the first time in my life, I felt like an equal. It was alright to trip over something and fall, long as I didn't end up in the ER. I discovered I took myself too seriously and let others define me. I decided there in the mud that if I was going to live with this vision impairment, I might as well enjoy it. I still have grieving times on occasion, but they don't last long. It gets better. The very best thing I can do is go do something for someone else. It's energizing!

I agree with the thing about people saying they couldn't do something other's do. For example I've helped care my dad through cancer and was told this by people. I appreciate the sentiment but really there's no choice. If your given a situation you cant really just decide not to deal with it. If a family member is ill or disable you just get on with it and support each other. So when people say they couldn't do it really they would if in the situation as you can't really not do it. Sorry for the rant, hope this makes sense

When I had a guide dog and eveyone knew why, they'd come up and tell me what an inspiration I was but if I sat at their table at a banquet, they moved somewhere else and NOT because the dog was in their way. I think people feel safer making statements like these. Some do it to avoid real conversation. Their loss.

@@shelleymagnussen1959 You know I honestly don't think much about what people think or say in regards to us, though it has been all positive for the people that know us. I suppose it is good that people are inspired, even if there reasons for it are a little odd. And because of how society is, I suppose it does take the right person to look at the person rather then the disability. There is allot that people just don't get. People feel weird about disabilities for some reason and tend to either ask only about a person's disability or are to afraid to ask at all. Maybe people will learn eventually.

Likewise I feel like they judge just as quickly if they see me slightly unengaged on my phone while with the person I’m supporting, giving them independence and not constantly being in there face on a 12hour shift, with someone who has 24 hour 24/7 support; like they are just trying to live there life and have downtime too.

I agree with everything about this video except for the fact that Hanna “doesn’t deserve praise”. You do a lot of extra work in a day being in a relationship with a disabled person. Not only taking care of him but all the house chores on your own. You can’t deny that and shouldn’t pretend it’s not true.... that being said... it’s just part of the nature of your relationship and it’s a choice you make and it’s nice :)

Agreed! I became a certified nursing assistant a couple of months ago but havent worked as one due to school. However, during my training I shadowed nursing assistants. Any form of a caregiver deserves praise IMO when done for the right reasons. Compassionate caregivers are amazing and of course disabled people deserve basic things like good hygiene, to be clothed, choices, etc. caregivers go out of their way to do this and it is beautiful.

It’s definitely work, however what they’re trying to say is that it’s just a normal day and routine for them instead of a chore that you have to do. But I’m sure Shane does appreciate her and have thanked her for caring for him, while for her she’s like, for what? Lol
@booyah5555
@booyah5555 4 года назад
I agree that it's more work, physically, but it's not appropriate for *strangers* to be giving that praise. I feel that's reserved for Shane. I'm not physically disabled, but there are some things I can't always do for myself and my wife takes care of them. It's more work for her, but she does it because she loves me. That said, I'd feel utterly humiliated and upset if some rando told her she's "so strong" and "should be praised" for all she does for me. That's an internal part of our relationship, It's Literally behind closed doors (of our house). I WISH she didn't have to do those things, and for someone to praise her for doing them would feel like a thinly veiled put-down towards me "oh you're so virtuous to care for a useless wretch like Canada". However, people wouldn't say that to her because it's not obvious. Just because people on the street can guess that Hannah does a lot for Shane, doesn't mean it's not incredibly rude to say.
@gingercowgirl5358
@gingercowgirl5358 4 года назад

there's a difference between praise from a spouse and praise from a stranger. one feels like a meaningful expression of gratitude, the other feels patronizing and insulting, esp to those of us with a disability who have to be constantly reminded we will always be dependent on someone. of course my spouse cares for me, do you not care for your loved ones when they're sick or unwell? it's the same thing

I’m happy you guys found someone who can understand and love you for you. What People don’t realize is we don’t have to be ashamed of our “disabilities” because no one is perfect so we really aren’t different. The biggest difference is we can’t hide from our struggles and therefore we make peace with them and find happiness sooner than most. ❤️

Gosh I would love to have an online chat session with them! I learn so much with each video they upload. Maybe consider organizing online q&a sessions online as a way to raise fund for the new covid campaign of yours? x

I’ve been watching you guys for a few months now. I think it’s amazing that you guys have found your forever person in each other and use your time to educate others on interabled relationships. It’s sad that people lower the tone with there uneducated comments rather than seeing the good in highlighting what life is really like for an interabled couple! Wishing you the happiest of lives together and can’t wait for you to share your love with your beautiful children to come! ❤️💙

Those socks are AH-MAZING!!! Sheer perfection. I would actually insist we wore matching pairs Shane 😂😂 and yes, my gf would also be horrified by this Also, you will be fantastic parents of you decide to have kids. What children need are love, acceptance and safety. And they will have those things in abundance in your home 🥰 I really loved this video 💐💐

I have learned that there are several places that are not disability accessible since my mother started using a walker. It makes it very hard to get her up a set of steps or we just decide not to patronize and go elsewhere. I love your RU-vid videos! Keep sharing your wit and charm ❤️

My dads in a wheelchair and he is the best. I do feel really bad for him tho bc he can't really go out (especially now) and it is quite hard to move him back and fourth from his wheelchair to the bed sense he is 6'0. I just hope I can take him somewhere cool when I get older. I love you guys, keep doing what you're doing

Hannah, Shane: Just wanted to say I saw a post on reddit (HumansBeingBros) ... I too "assumed" that Hannah was the care taker, and I was humbled when the video said "I am his fiancee". Made me realize that I was assuming, and sorry for that! You folks are inspiring and have taught me a lesson. So thank you. When I watched that clip and Shane talked about the hateful comments you have received I wanted to comment and say a sincere Thank You to both of you. Thank you for being strong. thank you for educating me (and others for sure). Thank you for being so open and helping people expand their horizons. Love is better than hate. I wish you both all the best in your life together.

Just touching on the last part, especially the dorm room, I can so relate to that. When I was a freshman I lived on the third floor of my dorm hall and none of the halls had elevators at all(they still don’t) I had always had horrible knees my knee cap would slide out of place and chill on the side of my leg multiple times a day. At that point I didn’t have any diagnosis or proof of a disability (if I knew what I know now I would have fought a lot harder about being on the first floor). I regularly had to go up and down the three stories on crutches multiple times a day. Whenever I had class, needed to go to the dining hall, study and hang out with friends it was always up and down. And when you were saying imagine that a so or parent can’t go visit because it wasn’t accessible, that was the case with my mom. My condition is genetic so she had horrible knees and failed surgeries that ended up making everything worse, so she couldn’t really do the whole move in and set up thing with me. Accessibility is required by law and still what is classified “accessible” is far from it. Luckily I was able to have both of my knees reconstructed so it isn’t nearly as restrictive as it was, but I had to drop out of school because I needed a year and a half to have multiple surgeries and rehab. I truly appreciate that you guys share your stories, experiences and life in a way to help educate others on topics most people don’t know much about because it’s “taboo” you are amazing and I’m so glad that I found your channel. I love how real you are and that’s something that I wish more people would do
