From the South I'm considering homeschooling my 10 yr old son who's in the 5th grade now. He has been in public and online schooling and he still struggles. My son has been really struggling with medical issues and this has been his worst year and his online school is currently retaining him. Your video has been the best I have watch so far and you have answered some of the questions that have been twirling around in my mind. Thank you and I really look forward to watching your other videos and planning for a successful school year for my son.

I’ve been a home school Mum for nearly two months and I’m doing horribly. We had to do distance learning with his school but I had to pull him out because it was massively impacting his mental health. I’m a bit stuck since I’m disabled, and due to my health, I can’t leave the property most of the year. How do I be creative with a nearly 11 year old? He has passion subjects that are home ex (baking and cooking) and I’ve realised how happy he is when he’s being creative with his hands so he’s doing some awesome stuff. He finds text books better and hates any online programs with a passion. Some days I have to be on the couch and nap. What can I do to feel less horrible as a teacher and Mum and human? I’m constantly trying new things but we have to legally do maths and English and science. Science we can cover with his passion subjects. But he has to do some specific things or I’m in the crap with our home Ed department. I’m at a bit of a loss of what to do.

Sounds like you might be in UK or Australia (since you said Mum and maths...)? Sounds like you are doing okay. He has interests you ca capitalize on. Could he make a 'cooking for kids' vid? Perhaps there is someone who could be a tutor? With an older child, they may have to get math by doing something like woodworking, or at least as part of that. Is he mature enough to understand that he must live up to state standards? Find out what they are and lay it out for him. He may come up with a solution!

Actually I have a question when you homeschool kids America? our parents given a list of what's needed so if they graduate from high school attend University? I'm American but I attended public schools which basically was a waste of time the best education I ever had was attending a private Christian which I'm still paying for it the age of 40 but there's not a day I'm not thankful. however if I had had the opportunity to be homeschooled in a Christian family I think I would have been very thankful. having three learning disabilities I really found it stressful studying in public schools
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 4 года назад
It really depends on what state you are in, they all have different guidelines/regulations. My state doesn't dictate what curriculum I use or even what is needed to graduate. I do follow similar guidelines to what kids in public school are doing, but our state is pretty flexible with what I teach and what curriculum I use. Others are not.

Do your children all do school in the same room, at the same time, daily? How much time daily do they have to actually be doing homeschool? 4 hrs?
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 4 года назад
Yes, check my Homeschool Room Tour and you'll see our setup. We've always done school in a room together. Sometimes we'll have a fun day and let everyone do it upstairs in the living room, at the library (pre covid), outside, etc. But for the most part we all work in the same room. It's much easier for me to manage everyone that way.

Most parents who home school have extreme views and cannot handle the thought of their kids getting polluted by other viewpoints. It is possible for the typical parent to successfully home school their kids up to about fifth grade. The parents are invariably beyond their ability to provide a useful education any further. A lot of kids who have been home schooled show up in the public system by junior high. It s often a case of outright rebellion by the kid. They also need/want organized sports and quality instruction in lab sciences and advanced math that the typical parent cannot provide. They usually have very poor writing and reading skills. You will always find someone claiming that their kids were home-schooled and went on to excel in university or some other field requiring advanced skills in math and science but they are rare.
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 5 лет назад
Hi, I'm not certain where you get your facts from, but I've found quite the opposite in my dealings with other homeschooling families. And I certainly don't feel that I am unable to provide any useful education past a 5th grade level. Sure there are extremes on both sides of any fence, but the majority of families I have come across are doing well with their educational choices. There are also plenty of opportunities for homeschool kids to participate in sports, labs, and advanced classes, including dual highschool/college enrollment. I think people often associate homeschooling with keeping kids locked up and away from any outside influences, however that just comes from not understanding what homeschooling truly encompasses and I think you'll find the exact opposite of what you claim if you do a little investigating.
@SuperFlatrock
@SuperFlatrock 5 лет назад
@@erica_arndt A dual approach works best from what I have seen, especially with respect to lab sciences. You are correct if you view the typical school culture with caution. There is a lot of good reasons to home school one's children.

Plus now I’m high schools they have transgenders playing women’s sports and using their locker rooms. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Perhaps all of you parents should investigate WHY religion(s), god(s), and public prayer(s) are not allowed in public schools. First hint: the answer is in the US Constitution's freedom of religion clause and tradition. Second hint: the concept of fairness and equality should apply to all 18 major religions and hundreds of minor religions around the nation and world. Also, please educate your children about all these other religions as well as non-religion (agnosticism, atheism, deism, humanism, etc.). It's a big world and understanding our fellow humans is important.

Hi Jenn before starting homeschooling do we have to let the community school know. And do we have to register the children with a school Biard? Like how do we let the town know that the kids are homeschooled not just sitting home escaping school?
@angelawilson1633

@@honoratbozor7013 hello, check online for the LAWS for homeschooling in your STATE. In Ga, l had to go up to the school in person to take my children out. (You'd probably want to do that at the end of their last school year) I had to register them with the board of education two wks before the school year started. For each child registered l received a student register number. The best advice that l can give you is check with your BROAD OF EDUCATION everything you're looking for should be on their online website. Also there's a online program called k-12, it's school but it's online. Depending on your income you can qualify for a free laptop. Hopefully l was able to help you somewhat. I hope everything works out for you.

I just found this today. I think this list is great. We are starting our 3rd year of homeschooling so we are relatively new. What I didn't expect was that I would like homeschooling. We chose to pull kids out of public school because we thought God wanted us to do it and I found out that I like it! It is definitely hard at times but over all I have no regrets. I particularly like the tip, "YOU DO YOU!" The bible says that "he who compares himself to others is not wise." I find myself struggling when I start looking at what everyone else around me is doing. When in focus on God and on my family life is simple. I am still building my community. We have had a few false starts but we are building up a group of close friends.

Such great advice Erica! I knew about #1, and I was so happy about that discount, it really came in handy. Looking forward to another quilting tutorial when you get the chance. :)

Ok I'm 13 and I'm so lost. I want to be homeschooled by my mom. As a program I want to use khan academy. Yet it's not a a credible school? She doesn't understand and wont listen to me. What do we need to homeschool me?

If you ask your school counselor they can help you set up. Khan academy is not an online school website, if u ask ur counselor they will tell u the website

I just started home schooling my daughter. Did it feel like it might not work in the beginning? Mind you im on day 3 and already feel like it might be a failure. Not sure if it's due to me being a dad.

Definitely had my doubts! Each year I said “well if it doesn’t work this year we’ll put them in school.” This year it dawned on me that I have a high school senior! I almost cried because we have made it the whole way!! Give it some time, it takes a little but to get into a groove 😊 but it’s been worth it!

Relax, and enjoy and get to know your dd, her strengths and feed her interests and you will be great! Cooking is great for learning about math (measuring, quantities, following directions, fractions, CHEMISTRY) and so much more.

I am homeschooling my daughter best choice you can ever make for your child. Look at the positive side you won't have to deal with bullying situation or having to worry if your child has a friend that's a bad influence or dealing with lazy teachers that don't do the teaching job right and blaming it all on the kids.

Can You Homeschool Other Children Than Your Own
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 4 года назад
Each state is different, but in most states you are only allowed to homeschool your own children, and sometimes your own grandchildren. Check with your local school district or www.hslda.org for details on your state.

The sound quality made it difficult to listen for very long lol Sounds like you are in a big empty room almost as if you are in a gymnasium with wooden floors. Sorry, I don’t mean to be a downer but it really is difficult to listen at a sound level that enables me to hear what is being said without a distracting high pitch quality piercing my ears. Good info though just needs the sound fixed
