Moving to Korea has been a trip, but here are some of the things I wish I knew about before moving to South Korea. Regardless Korea has a lot of great things to offer and I probably would still live here even if I had known all of this beforehand!
Thanks as always for watching!

The fruit one killed me when I did my study abroad there 😭. I remember a watermelon being almost 20,000won at a supermarket. When I returned to Canada, I asked my family to have a platter of fruit ready for me 😂.

It's still kills me 😭😭🤣 and its not even the big watermelons, sometimes its like very mediocre and you just have to kinda settle 😞 I did the same when I went back home during my break. I was MOM I need fruits!

I noticed that about fruits too. I found that buying them from the vendors on the street were cheaper. Plus I felt better helping them. 😊

The designer thing (Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc.) sounds like the same trajectory as Japan before the bubble burst (before your time-- lol). Now Japanese lean more towards the minimalist thing and more simple living and most unabashedly are into Muji and wear Uniqlo, which is much more relatable.

The reason Korea feels colder than Colorado is because it us surrounded by water and Colorado is not! That is the difference between dry cold and wet cold! Same thing we experience on Long Island, in New York in the USA. We are surrounded by water because we stick out into the water from NY State and our cold is colder here than the same temperature in upstate where it is not surrounded by water. Upstate at 0degrees is warmer than Long Island's 0degrees! God Bless!

Korea gets their Northern winds from Siberia, that's why it's piercing cold 🥶 if you're in Korea that's not near the ocean then it's much colder.

If I may suggest here, see more Korean dramas before you decide to migrate to South Korea. Their dramas do show you, to some extent, their value system etc. Like, it is so hard to get a full time job without connections and part time workers have very Low job security. Also, seniority is very important, being an orphan, a divorcée is socially a disadvantage etc. It is not whether it is good or bad. But one does not migrate there to change their culture/values. Rather, to adapt well into a new environment without feeling depressed.

Having been in Korea for holidays a few times, I'd have to have to say that this is extremely accurate. To touch up on point 10, although Korea is generally safe - they have a spycam culture. It's as scary as it sounds because from experience, my bf was aware of it and took action when visiting hotels/bnbs. In the end, we never found anything, but it's a WHOLE LOT better to protect our privacy than being watched by creeps. It honestly sucks that there's this side to Korea that I never knew about, so I would like to let other people know. Also, awesome channel! Planning to apply for the 2022 Spring intake :))

I think Asian countries dont have a tipping culture. Korea is very similar to Singapore in terms of convenience and safety. The fruits are way cheaper here but renting an apartment can be very expensive.

I would love to visit but not live. I live for fruit. So I need it all day long! lol plus I hate smoking. Also I heard there is a lot of toxic air in Korea? Not Covid but in general. Where you have to wear masks a lot especially in the summer. Is that true?
@Will_ly
@Will_ly 3 года назад
I miss non expensive fruit!! But yeah the air can get pretty bad here due to the fine dust. I've been told that it's due to China. There's an app that will tell you the quality of air so you know when to wear a mask

Omg…I wished someone had told me about the awful Korean breath! No one mentions this in any RU-vid videos! Winter is the worst! I literally would ride to and from work in a nauseous stomach because one mouth is so poisonous to ruin the entire bus air 🤮 I hated talking to Korean teachers who had Korean breath in the morning. They would lean in to hear me speak 🤢The worst was when I started hallucinating the Korean breath in my own apartment after I get off the bus 🥴🤢🤮

In America they usually get the waiter/waitress attention by putting up their hands and saying excuse me. So it's pretty much the same as Korea 😂 lol... Are you sure it's safe in South Korea because I have a interview for a teaching position there which I do not know what city yet and I I wanna be sure!!!
@Will_ly
@Will_ly 3 года назад
Haha I'm not sure if its exactly the same, if you add any sort of aggression in America waiters will think your rude. In Korea you can literally yell for a waiter and they wouldn't blink twice 😆 I mean there's been 7 mass shootings just within 2021 in America so choose your battle 🤣

I am so glad I live in singapore & not S. korea. After living in 6 diff countries, I realised the only place that's suitable for long term living is immigrant countries like Singapore, USA, UK & Australia etc cos these are places that are vy diverse & english speaking, u dont need to pick up 2nd language. To me singapore is the best as it's the combination of best east & west cultures. Best of it, s'pore has highest avg salary in asia, its the only asia country thats able to compete among top 10 highest salary. Though sg is most expensive in asia esp rental/properties but there are many things still so affordable & dirt cheap like food & transport. Food include fruits too though sg imports almost everything. SG has gd governance system that's able to keep tab on the pricing of basic items & make sure they wont go sky rocking high. Also impt thing why sg is better than korea is that smoking is frown upon in sg; Govt rrally discourage smoking, so usually we've designated smoking areas & cigarettes super expensives. Oh ya tipping culture is the same in ALL asia countries, NOT just in korea or japan; it's necessary & its usually alrdy added into service charge. It seems that tipping culture is more unique in USA.
