Whenever you start a new career, you feel like multiple things are being thrown at you and it can become very confusing. Here are the top 10 things I wish I knew prior to starting traveling nursing.
Welcome aboard to all my wonderful Nurses! I am so happy that you have stumbled upon my RU-vid channel! I am Jennifer and I am an Emergency Room/PCU Traveling Registered Nurse who lives Full Time in an RV traveling the United States.
I created my RU-vid channel to provide both prospective nursing students, current nursing students, graduate nurses, and seasoned nurses with resources and education based on the healthcare profession and healthcare practices. This channel will cover topics from the pre-nursing school such as TEAS testing and application assistance to seasoned nursing from staffing education and travel nursing.

Thank you for sharing. Some really good advice. I have been traveling since 1996. I stopped in the year 2000 so that I could advance in my skills from a step down unit to the ICU. I did that for 4 years then went back to traveling as an ICU nurse. I have never been lonely on my assignments. I travel alone and I get home sick but I have never been lonely. I have found that the nurses on the unit are just waiting for you to make the first move as far as friendship and getting to the point where you are included in partys, outings, hiking, skiing, shopping, site seeing etc. I have met so many people and developed friendships with over half of them. My advice to those who may be reading this is to put yourself out there. Make the first move and you will have more friends than you know what to do with. Another big, I mean huge, word of advice. Never, Never, Never! gossip. Don't say a bad word about the facility, manager or how the facility is run. Stay positive in all of your remarks. I was traveling with a friend back in 1996 to 1998. I watched her slide down hill from being very popular to being shunned by most of the nurses because she entered into a conversation that staff nurses were having about the manager. She was not positive in her remarks. Later on down the road it bit in the arss. She was shunned by the staff and manger. She went home for a while, rejuvenated and now she is on a nurse traveler assignment in Guam. Just remember you have something to offer as a nurse and as a person. Stand tall, take responsibility, make friends and enjoy your life. Nurse Traveling is fantastic. I love it!

That is some great advice Rhonda Williams. I agree! If you put yourself out there, you may surprised by the response of others. I have made some great and lasting friendships along the way with my travels. I recently returned to one of my travel assignments and it was like I never left. I am also considering taking a break from traveling to advance my skills from PCU/ER to ICU. It's funny to hear how others have experienced or are considering experiencing the same advancements. 🤗💕

I always treat my fellow travelers nicely and with a welcome. I actually forget about their paychecks I could care less. Because the truth is if I was that pressed about how much they got paid vs my pay I could simply go travel myself. Lol. I have no husband and no kids.

That's great that you have the ability to travel if you wanted to Snap. Regardless if the person is permanent staff or travel staff, it's important to remember that we are all people with a job to do. Care for patients and care for ourselves/each other. The paycheck shouldn't determine someones worth on the unit. 🤗💕

Did you have a difficult time learning different protocols or standards of care for each hospital you've worked?
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 5 лет назад
Not at all, Jon Dizon. I learned to look at policies that were important in all facilities and acclimate myself to the travel facility by reviewing them. If I was performing a procedure I was not aware of the policy and hadn't performed, I would take the time to review the parameters and procedures before performing anything to protect my license. It's easier to refer to the policy than have to answer the court and why I didn't something when I was not aware of the policy. 🤗💕

Thanks for the video, would you be willing to share what hospitals in your experiences are unfriendly towards travelers? Maybe that was already asked? Thanks
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 5 лет назад
Thanks for the great question 45 Degrees. Its difficult to discuss hospital experiences .towards travelers without having some kind of repercussions. A few years back, a travel nurse on RU-vid was cancelled from her contract and removed from her travel healthcare agency because of the comments she made regarding different facilities. She was mostly blacklisted in the industry. I definitely don't want that to happen to me or anyone else either. 🤗💕

What good is a "Contract" if the facility can break it?
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 5 лет назад
My point exactly Speak easy. There are many individuals within the industry who are currently advocating for the traveling community to have consistent and better contracts. Unfortunately, healthcare professionals are expendable employees at some facilities and staff employees treat travelers poorly. This isn't to say all facilities are like this; however, there are some who are noted for treating travelers poorly. Another important note is that the contract we sign as travelers is different from the contract the agencies sign with facilities. Our contracts do not protect us from cancellations like the contracts do with hospitals. Unfortunately, it is a very one sided industry. 🤗 🏥

Hi! Thank you for the very informative video! I'm a surg tech about to start traveling and still found your video super helpful. I do have a question about hospitals cutting our contracts short.. how would they be allowed to do that if its within the contract for us to be there for a certain time? If we break contract, we don't get paid or have to pay back right? I'm sure it happens it just doesn't seem fair that they could cut us off when that's our livelihood. Thanks again for the videos! I will be subscribing! :)
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 5 лет назад
This is a great question! It would seem that the contract we sign with our agency would protect us from cancellations. However, the contract we sign with the agency is different than the contract the agency has with the hospital. Ultimately, the hospitals call the shots and can cancel us without notice or anytime during our contract. In addition, if we decide to cancel our contract early, regardless of the reason, we can be held liable with the agency and the hospital. I really wish this wasn't the case and that both the traveler and hospital were protected equally. This is one of the reasons why I have left travel nursing for now because the contract cancellations and hospital behaviors towards travelers have gotten worse. 😔
@14Carissaw
@14Carissaw 5 лет назад
@@NurseCheung That's such a shame! Part of me is so nervous to travel for that reason. The hospital I was permanent at had quite a few travelers coming through, so I always tried to be welcoming to them. On one hand it's such a great opportunity to meet new people and see new places.. but it seems like it can also be unfair to the travelers.

If you find your own housing do you have to pay rent up front and security deposit ? If so are you reimbursed?
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 4 года назад
It really depends on the housing. If you are staying in a hotel, some will require payment up front and others will let you pay weekly. Most housing rentals will require payment up front either in total or on monthly basis. You will receive tax free reimbursements for housing and incidentals; however, these totals may not cover the entire costs if you choose to find your own housing. If you allow the company to find you housing, there is a chance the housing may be inadequate for your needs. I hope this answers a lot of your questions. 🤗💕 All the best with your travels.

Hi...............Thanks for all of your wonderful info. I'm an LPN and thinking about travel nursing. I am married but no kids and no mortgage and my wife loves to travel and see new places. She if from the Philippines. I currently work on a med/surge unit in a hospital and have about 1.5yrs there as well as 7 yrs long term and rehab experience. Would you suggest I get my RN first then maybe consider travel. I want to be somewhere warm when Winter gets here. I'm currently in Louisville, KY. How did the RV work out compared to housing? Was there a lot of inconveniences with that like being able to do your laundry when you wanted? Thanks again. Don
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 6 лет назад
Thanks for the question Don Howard II and thank you for supporting my video. It's really up to you regarding becoming an RN before traveling. There are jobs available for LPNs to travel throughout the United States; however, many positions depending on your state of choice are limited. If you decide to go back to school and obtain your RN, you still need to have at least two years of experience as an RN to start traveling. The RV Life is great! I wouldn't trade the convenience of having my own place whenever we travel from assignment to assignment. After your assignment is over and you receive company housing, it's like being homeless every three months. My RV is paid off and we just move it between assignments to the next location without the hassle of having to pack my things into my car.

Hiiii! New travel nurse here! I am looking to take my second contract out of state, but live at home with my parents when I'm local. How does technically not paying rent impact my tax home? Should I start paying them rent to cover me for tax season?
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 2 года назад
Great question Ogadi Anyanmu. I have heard of individuals who use their parents home as a tax home and pay rent. The only way that it would be considered as a tax home is if your parents stated you paid rent on their home when they filed their taxes. They would need to claim the additional monies on their taxes and I believe "but don't quote me" pay taxes on that money as an additional income stream. I have heard of families who are reluctant to do this since it does effect their taxes. I would look into TravelTax.com as they could probably provide better insight regarding the topic from a tax point of view.

If you are trying to use it for a tax deduction related to travel healthcare, I do believe the IRS guidelines have changed on that subject. I would highly recommend Travel Tax expert Joseph Smith. He has over 20 years of experience and has the most up to date information on tax deduction related to healthcare expenses.

Lol Happymeal. No! 🤗💕 Please don't let my video discourage you. I wanted to create a video regarding the common surprises I found while travel nursing. As healthcare professionals, we really are a different breed of human and can withstand most things. I believe in you! Never not pursue your dreams.

I wish I could help you find a position Dream and make it. Unfortunately, I am not a travel nurse recruiter but there are a lot of great resources on finding the best rates, recruiters, and hospitals online 💜☺️
