Für alle, die deutsch nicht als Muttersprache haben: Die deutsche Welle (DW) bietet auch kostenlose Deutsch-Sprachkurse an. DW ist Teil des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks, wird also von jedem Deutschen über den Rundfunkbeitrag bezahlt, weshalb dort auch keine Werbung zu sehen sein sollte. DW bietet z.B. langsam gesprochene Nachrichten und auf das entsprechende Sprachniveau (C bis einschließlich A1) ausgerichtete Lerninhalte an.
Ordnung und Sauberkeit finden Sie "nervig"? Das manche von Pfandgeld leben müssen finden sie normal? Sich beim Essen übermäßig laut die Nase zu putzen verursacht bei mir würgereize. Krach am Abend oder besser noch in der Nacht ist sehr ärgerlich wenn man früh aufstehen muss um zu arbeiten, um diesen ganzen dekadenten Zustand mit finanzieren zu müssen. Die Lärmverursacher können ja ausschlafen. Anstatt unsere Art zu verunglimpfen, bringen Sie den Wissbegierigen und lernwilligen doch mal nahe , dass man seinen Müll nicht überall hinschmeisst, von der Waschmaschine bis zum Kühlschrank, von Matratzen und anderem Sperrmüll. Oder anderen Fussgängern auf dem Gehweg auch noch etwas Platz lässt. Nur einige kleine Beispiele die uns wundern wie man sich so benehmen kann. Wir werden sicher nicht auf dieses Niveau herab sinken.
The part "Always speaking English" is so funny! I moved to Germany to learn German and everybody spoke English to me. I had to pretend I didn't speak English to be able to practise my German.
Das ist aber nichts typisch deutsches - ist mir in Italien genauso gegangen: Lerne Italienisch und mache einen Fahrradurlaub auf Sizilien. Wo immer, wann immer ich mein noch recht ärmliches Italienisch zusammen kratze, wird mir auf Deutsch geantwortet oder jemand herbei gerufen, der 8 Jahre bei Mercedes oder 5 Jahre bei Opel oder so gearbeitet hat...

that always happened to me in Berlin but in Hamburg never xD it was always like oh I don't speak English and proceeded to keep talking to me in German.

The 4th example of being talked to in English while wanting to improve my German really hit me! I was studying in Austria in 2020 for a semester abroad (I’m from the USA) and every time I wanted to converse in German, people just switched straight to English. It was a little frustrating, but it helped that some Austrians wanted to improve their English skills, so it made it a little easier to hold a conversation.
@@JudgeHill I had the same experience, but it was worse because I was with South American friends that spoke German well and no English, so then I'd be translating from English back to German for them.
I had the same problem. When I was there it was always "We don't have to speak German, we can speak English". After a while I was practically yelling "Ich kann schon Englisch! Sprich mir auf Deutsch!"
Ich hatte das mal mit einer Kollegin die aus Kanada kam und natürlich erstmal kein Deutsch sprach es aber lernte und sich zunächst noch nicht getraut hat mit uns auch Deutsch zu sprechen. Da musste man sich echt zwingen nicht auf Englisch mit ihr zu sprechen. Wir haben dann einfach deutsch mit ihr gesprochen und sie hat auf englisch geantwortet. Das hat ihr auch geholfen die Sprache schneller zu lernen.
There might be also another reason involved with this. Many German speakers speak a dialect and standard German is only kind of their second language. For a dialect speaker it is completely normal to chose the language he speaks based on the situation. In school standard German is mandatory so he is trained for this starting at a young age. When a dialect speaker talks to someone where he can expect that the other is no dialect speaker, it is just normal to switch to standard German. Otherwise it might be hard or impossible to talk with each other. English adds just another layer to this. Instead of switching from dialect to standard German then the switch is done to English.
I think the Ruhezeit and Mülltrennung are actually good things👍. The Ruhezeit benefits all, many cities in Germany even have local regulations for it. The wrong filled trash bins are either not emptied or you get fined for it, if you live in an apartment, you have somehow to share the consequence of your neighbors' mistakes
Die Nachtruhe ist nicht nur in der Hausordnung zu finden, sondern sogar im Gesetz. Da ich selbst immer um 4 Uhr morgens aufstehen muss, finde ich dieses Gesetz auch sehr gut 🤭😅

@@kinghans6266 muss man trotzdem nicht nachts machen (Waschmaschine) wenn der Mensch der über dir wohnt Schicht arbeitet und auch noch ständig zu Feuerwehreinsätzen der freiwilligen Feuerwehr gerufen wird. Irgendwann brauch man mal Ruhe.
Hello easy German team I wanted to tell you guys this so I’ve been waiting for your new video to come out. When I started learning German which was last year November I couldn’t watch your videos without looking at the English subtitles and after a while I kind of got frustrated and left your Channel alone for a bit. I continued to learn German for all those months by myself because I’m a teenager and I’m self taught but Then something amazing happened. I took a look at one of your videos a few days ago and I was amazed to see that I hardly even needed the English subtitles and I could understand most of what was being said in the video with the help of the German subtitles and that made me so happy. The work that you guys do is really appreciated😁

Wow thats cool, i can say the same, i started learning german around February this year (but i had some school exam which i finished at the end of june, so i wasnt studying that much tbh) and back then I could barely understand easy Germans Videos without stopping them at every sentence and reading the english translation to help me understand the german sentences. But now, after studying german grammar and vocabulary, listening to lots of german music and reading many german short stories i can say that i can almost watch their videos without english subtitles, and im really happy to see my progress 😄. Even tho im still far from being able to understand without any subtitles at all (since these guys speak so fast 😂), i will definitely keep studying this amazing language. It was good to finally hear Nick speaking german. You guys did a fun video. One of my best experiences in learning german was having conversations with a german whose english was weak and me being an american whose german was weak. The net result was my struggling with german until I could go no further and had to switch to english. The german would struggle with english until she could go no further and had to switch to german. From the context of our discussion topic we simultaneousy improved our foreign language.
I'm on a 11 day trip in Bavaria, and I've been learning German for 4 months. Before the trip I was thinking I may need to pretend not to speak English in order to practice while here, but literally everyone has been glad to speak German with me as soon as I start speaking in German. Also, no one has tried speaking Bavarian with me (thank God 😅). Every person I came across has been so nice, and most are really tickled and happy that I can speak some German. I don't speak nearly enough to have conversations, but despite this I've somehow had hours of conversations in German, bc the people have really been that patient and friendly :). So it can happen.

The one about the noise is so true. If I drop something on the floor or move a chair after 10pm, I immediately hear the neighbor downstairs shouting and banging his ceiling with a broom. I keep imagining him holding his broom all night long hoping that we will make a noise.
It was so annoying, please understand the floor was thin in the USA! Be considerate as well! 😆😏 Not only German felt the same way! At least Germen try hard to let annoying people know! Love you Neighbor is the must and right thing to do! 🤓

I’m in Germany for the first time now. I’m so impressed by people that never cross the road when the signal’s red, even if there’s no car around. It’s kinda similar in Japan. But I got the impression that Germans follows more.
Well, I'm German living in Japan, and i got yelled at by a police officer yesterday for crossing the street 50 cm too far left of the zebra-crossing stripes ;) Although I'm fairly positive that would happen in Germany, too, considering how often I've been stopped for having a broken bicycle front light ;)
I was in Berlin in 2009 and I was impressed with how clean everything was. I am still impressed to this day as I have been to many large cities since and none of them compare. Cities in Japan came pretty close, though. One evening in Berlin I was waiting for the U-Bahn and I saw a woman in a beautiful fur coat with expensive jewelry walking around picking up a few pieces of garbage and sorting them into the proper receptacles. It blew my mind because here in the US you never see people with that kind of wealth lowering themselves to such a menial task, especially if they are not being paid to do it. I think that Germans have a strong sense of civic pride and responsibility that can be very inspiring
Sorry, but I had to laugh when you said that Berlin is clean...first of all there is a lot of dog poo in the streets, second come an visit Baden-Württemberg it's a lot more clean and third if you ever have the chance visiting Switzerland THEN you know what is clean^^ ps: please take this with a grain of salt 😉
@@juwa2343 well, I do live in the US, and our cities are all full of trash and worse, so by comparison Berlin was immaculate. Also, it was 2009, so maybe Berlin lost its pride since then? 😋 I plan to visit Europe again, hopefully soon. @@jonathanbartlett1098 Baden-Württemberg is the state in the SW parts of Germany, also home to the Black Forest and.. well, something, I guess, yeah, Mercedes and Porsche. Cleanliness is not exactly a virtue in those parts of the country - especially in the infamous region of Swabia - but rather OCD. So, cleanliness not for reasons of hygiene but rather as a competive sport in suburbia to show off an even more immaculate front garden or getting up at 4am to scrub your driveway. Think Desperate Housewives, multiply by 50, subtract the sex and that's living in Swabia. The rest of Germany thinks of it as a place in between purgatory and hell. But they are filthy rich, one has to admit. And everything is clean. If you plan to murder someone and look for someone to clean up the mess, hire a Swabian housewive. Not even the FBI will find any traces afterwards ;-)
Hmm, also das mit dem Lärm nach 22 Uhr finde ich persönlich wirklich sehr störend. Wenn ich am nächsten Tag sehr früh aufstehen und zur Arbeit muss, ist es für mich nicht möglich im Bett die nötige Ruhe zum Einschlafen zu finden. Nicht jeder hat die Begabung auch bei größtem Lärm sofort einschlafen zu können. Insofern finde ich nicht, dass das etwas nervig Deutsches ist, sondern Rücksicht aufeinander durchaus etwas erstrebenswertes.
Ja, ein paar Nachbarn haben neulich mitten in der Woche eine Geburtstagsfeier gemacht. Mit lautem gegröhle, Countdown und "Happy Birthday to you" um Punkt 0 Uhr und anschließend lauter Musik. Ich mein, am Wochenende bin ich ja gern bereit, ein Auge zuzurücken. Mitten in der Woche fehlt mir dafür aber jegliches Verständnis. Zum Glück konnte ich aber einfach die Fenster zumachen und hatte so meine Ruhe (auch wenn ich im Sommer sehr gerne mit offenen Fenstern schlafen würde). Bin allerdings auch schwer vorbelastet, weil ich über 1 1/2 Jahre mit lauten Nachbarn um die Nachtruhe kämpfen musste. Und ich rede hier nicht von "die haben um 22:05 noch Musik angehabt", ich rede hier von "die haben zu jeder Tages und Nachtzeit laute Musik angehabt, manchmal bis 4 Uhr morgens, manchmal auch AB 4 Uhr morgens, manchmal so laut, dass bei mir die Scheiben geklirrt haben, obwohl ich 3 Stockwerke über denen wohnte", und das über ein Jahr lang (man musste halt erstmal auch rausfinden, von woher das kam, dann erstmal auf die freundliche Art versucht mit persönlicher Ansprache, die genau gar nix gebracht hat, dann den Vermieter einschalten, usw...). Und kaum waren die Nachbarn aus der 8. Etage ruhig, fingen die Nachbarn aus der 12. Etage an, mitten in der Nacht Karaoke zu singen, kleine Kinder trampelten um 3 Uhr Nachts laut brüllend durch die Wohnung und was weiß ich nicht noch alles. Der Hammer war, dass ich mal am 25.12. um 4 Uhr morgens bei denen auf der Matte stand (meine Frau musste an dem Tag arbeiten und hätte gerne noch etwas geschlafen), und am selben Abend noch fangen die wieder an, Party zu machen. Da hab ich die Polizei gerufen weil ich mit den Nerven einfach nur noch am Ende war. Der Scheiß macht einen auch psychisch krank. Sorry für den Rant. Obwohl das ganze jetzt schon bald 10 Jahre her ist, sitzt das bei mir immer noch ziemlich tief. Ich glaube jemand der das nicht selbst durchgemacht hat kann nicht so ganz nachvollziehen, warum es einige Menschen gibt die hyperempfindlich auf lärmende Nachbarn reagieren.
das liegt eher an dieser "amerikanischen" Ich Ich Ich Kultur in der Rücksicht auf Andere (die Gemeinschaft) keinen hohen Stellenwert hat und das durchsetzten persönlicher Interessen im Vordergrund steht. Leider geht das immer mehr verloren und Menschen die wie in deinem Beispiel Ihre Nachtruhe brauchen leiden darunter. Finde es auch immer befremdliche wenn Leute empört sind, wie ich mich erdreisten kann ihre Bauunternehmen am Sonntag Morgen als störend zu empfinden usw. Leider wird der Trend immer weiter in diese Richtung gehen. Tue mich gerade aktuell auf dem Wohnungsmarkt sehr schwer etwas für meine Junge Familie zu finden, da ich immer davon ausgehen muss dass jeder Nachbar ein potentielles Risiko darstellt.
Es gibt für dieses Problem ein gar zauberhaftes Wundermittel...es heißt "Oropax". Im Ernst - die Dinger retten mir regelmäßig meinen Schlaf. Habe ich mir in Asien angewöhnt, damit keine Parasiten in mein Ohr gelangen 🤣

Eine sehr lustige Episode, weil alles so genau ist! Auch sehr besonders an Deutschland ist der Druck, der man sich an einer Kasse in einem Supermarkt fühlt. Immer so unglaublich ungeduldig! Man muss einfach bereit sein, so schnell wie möglich, den Einkauf einzupacken...

2:33 das hat den Grund: der Deutschen Telekom gehören noch die meisten Telefonleitungen. Sie müssen diese im Auftrag anderer Anbieter "freischalten" und lassen sich hier gerne Zeit. Da hat man dann als Vodafone-Kunde Probleme und muss warten. Anders sieht es aus, wenn Vodafone eigene Leitungen in der Wohnung hat oder das Kabelnetz benutzt wird, da kommt dann der Techniker oft nach wenigen Tagen. Ich hatte schon mal dass er gleich am nächsten Tag da war. Ist man bei der Deutschen Telekom direkt Kunde ist der Techniker auch schneller da. ;)
@@sandiego2380 I just returned from England after 15 years and we, and many neighbours will blast music in the garden often nonstop, throughout the entire weekend - and nobody will complain. In Germany, people would have called the police 3 times over. In Germany, I had neighbours complain the next morning that my music was too loud the previous night inside my flat. It takes A LOT for an English person to complain about anything their neighbours are doing... I would say most Germans will not tolerate a noise disturbance at night.

4:40 The reason why many Germans continue to speak English is that they want to make sure that there are no misunderstandings in conversation. Even if the other person speaks some German, they may not speak it very well and may not understand everything and may be embarrassed to ask if they don't understand a common word. In the end, you can tell someone how to get to the station and it won't help the person at all because they won't be able to follow your directions and will get lost or have to ask the next person who comes along. This will not happen if you speak the person's native language well enough and give the answer in that language. There is no negative aspect here, Germans are just trying to be as helpful as possible. And remember: if you have a problem, e.g. you need to go somewhere urgently and you don't know how, this is not the best situation to "practice German". Asking for help is not the same as small talk, even if there was small talk, but by asking for help the situation was already given.

Ich bin mit Janus der gleichen Meinung. Mir gefaellt es eigentlich dass die Deutschen Sorgen um das Gemeinwohl machen und sich dafür verantwortlich fühlen. Das finde ich überhaupt nicht nervig. Ganz im Gegenteil, ich wünsche mir, dass mehr Leute in meinem Land sich ums Gemeinwohl kümmerten.
It's good to care but sometimes it is too much and becomes interference in other's lifes. And sometimes for us foreigners is really annoying. They should either stop or become more friendly and not too rude.
Ich denke man kann die Nachbarn gerne darauf hinweisen falls einem mal was auffällt, aber so eine Art humanoide Videoüberwachung geht dann doch einen Schritt zu weit, und das hinweisen sollte auch schon freundlich sein (wenns das 1000ste Mal ist darf man vielleicht auch ein bisschen vorwurfsvoll klingen)
"Nachtruhe" (Night rest) is regulated by law and is valid from 22-06. On Sundays and holidays, the rest must be observed all day. Also regulated by law. Only the "Mittagsruhe" (Noon rest) is regulated by the house rules.

When I leave Germany, I am literally sick for 2-4 weeks once I get back to Canada because Germany is so special to me. I may be Canadian by citizenship but I am German by blood, heart and soul. Wenn man telefonieren will oder muss, einfach an der Seite stehen bleiben und schon steht man niemanden im Weg. Denn der Fußweg gehört einem nicht allein. Das nennt man auch Rücksicht. Es kann so einfach sein.
In high school I worked at the Magic Kingdom and earned a "Ich spreche Deutsch" pin after passing a basic oral test. Most Americans read it and erroneously asked, "You speak Dutch"? I figuratively rolled my eyes and said, "No, German". As Deutsche Einheit occurred my senior year it became helpful to the former east Germans. Some English-speaking Germans, and I'm sure a few Austrians, spoke to me auf deutsch to help me practice my German. In 1996 I visited Germany for the second time and most people spoke back to me in German, even though they spoke English very well. There were a few, however, who refused after greeting me in German. I had a wonderful time and looking forward to visiting again, maybe even staying for a month or two. It's nice hearing the language again and really enjoy your videos. Es tut mir leid das ich auf Englisch getyppt habe. Ich habe diese Sprache zeit 2010 nicht gesprochen oder geschrieben.
ich habe schon fast alle Situationen erlebt die ihr gezeigt habt 😂😂 aber jetzt mach ich selber gerne, jemand an die Regeln zu errinnern. z.B. "Das ist ein Fahrradweg!!!" oder "Lass mich erstmal aussteigen und dann einsteigen!!!".
Ich sage gerne laut zu mir selbst: “ja der steht auch doof in der Gegend herum 🙄 " wenn ein Auto auf dem Gehweg/Fahrradweg parkt, gleich mehrere Parkplätze belegt oder in die Fahrbahn hineinragt. Bei sonstigen Verstößen gibt es ein "Ernsthaft?"🤨🤷
Als ich an einem Sonntagmorgen durch München geradelt bin (bin auch Ausländerin) stand an einer Ampel plötzlich ein alter Mann im Rollstuhl auf dem Fahrradweg. Weit und breit war niemand zu sehen außer der Mann und seiner Betreuerin und ich auf dem Rad. Ich vermute die Betreuerin wollte die Schwelle des Bürgersteiges für den Rollstuhl vermeiden. Ich fands aber so lustig, dass der sehr alte Mann im langsamen Rollstuhl auf der Fahrbahn für die "schnellen Roller" stand, dass ich neben ihn hinfuhr und fragte, ob er bereit sei, mit mir um die Wette zu fahren. Hahahaha Der weißhaarige Mann erwiderte daraufhin: "Dann muss ich mich aber sehr klein machen, um keinen Gegenwind zu haben." Made my day
Das stimmt so nicht immer. War am Montag bei der Telekom, bekam Termin für folgenden Freitag. Techniker rief mich an diesem Tag eine halbe Stunde vor der vereinbarten Uhrzeit an. Pünktlich auf die Minute war er da. Nach zehn Minuten war alles fertig. Er hat mir sogar noch den TV frisch eingestellt. Alles perfekt. Super freundlich.
I’m moving back to Berlin in a couple of months and these videos are really getting me excited - I never really actively enjoyed speaking German, but after a year away I really miss it!
Übrigens: Die Regelungen in den Hausordnungen zu den Nachtruhezeiten folgen gesetzlichen Bestimmungen und sind auf Bundeslandebene festgeschrieben. D.h. das gilt auch, wenn man auf offener Straße oder auf einem Feld nach 22Uhr Lärm macht. Siehe Bundes-Immissionsschutzgesetz(BImSchV) und die Landes-Immissionsschutzgesetze (LImSchG).

I lived and studied in Bremen for a year back in 1983-84. I experienced all the things your skits portrayed. I especially found it annoying to be corrected by random strangers, when I was minding my own business. One time I was on a bus when a woman pointed out, to the entire bus, that my coat was missing a button. I was aware of it, but the button was lost, so I figured I had to buy all new buttons and replace them. It never occurred to me that I would free be publicly chastised if I didn’t fix it immediately.
I'm German but I grew up bilingual with German and English in school and sometimes I don't want to be recognized as a German. I remember crossing a street yesterday here in Berlin on a pedestrian walk using a 4-wheeled walker. A lady came towards me and told me that it's common to walk on the right side. Being told what is wrong is typical German for me - even though there is another option to solve the problem. By the way: There was enough space next to me...! If you are interested: I'm 57 years of age.
It's not just a german thing that people respond in English when you want to learn the language. The same happened to me when I visited Norway for the first time. I learned some basic Norwegian at the University. It was a requirement to learn a new language for my Bachelor degree and I chose to learn Norwegian. When I visited the country 3 years later I wanted to practice my skills and started conversations in Norwegian but 50% of the people I met replied in English. They probably just wanted to help me and make the conversation easier when they realized my Norwegian was not good.
People just want to save others the embarassment one can feel in a conversation with strangers if they can't communicate how they want to. Usually we switch as soon as we notice our English is better than your whatever country you're visiting.
In Hungary the same. If I try in Hungarian, they reply in English or if my Hungarian stucks and I continue in English, they respond in Hungarian...can be a bit frustrating sometimes

7:45 Grundsätzlich gilt in Deutschland die gesetzliche Nachtruhe von 22 Uhr bis 6 Uhr. In dieser Zeit sollten jegliche Geräusche auf Zimmerlautstärke herunterreduziert werden. Von Zimmerlautstärke ist dann die Rede, wenn die Geräusche zwischen 30 und 40 dB liegen. Die Hausordnung ist da eigendlich zweitrangig.
Haha “always speaking English”… das kann ich auch bestätigen als ich in Hamburg gewohnt habe. Immer wenn ich versuchte mein Deutsch zu verbessern und endlich mal deutsch mit einem fremd zu sprechen, sie haben mir immer auf englisch beantwortet! Das hat mich so viel genervt aber natürlich, ich finde es auch ein bisschen lustig! Ich: „hallo, ich möchte bitte einen karamel macchiato zu mitnehmen, vielen dank“… Hamburger: „Oh English, I studied in Brighton, lived there for 2 years and had such a cool time…. sorry, did you want anything else with that?“ 😂 Ja, deutsch zu lernen 😂
Neulich gerade im Hamburger Stadtpark erlebt. Ein Engländer (ich hab ihn sich vorher unterhalten gehört) fragt mich auf recht gebrochenem Deutsch nach dem Weg zur U-bahn. Ich antworte auf Deutsch. Meine Begleitung wiederum fragt mich entrüstet warum ich denn nicht einfach Englisch mit ihm gesprochen hätte.... sie hat es tatsächlich als unhöflich empfunden, ich hätte es ihm leichter machen müssen 🥺 Das könnte ein Grund sein! Ich selber lerne Dänisch und die Dänen sind auch nicht besser und da ich selber auch gerne Englisch spreche werde ich einfach nie Sprachpraxis bekommen 😅
Zu dem Punkt "im Weg stehen": mir passiert es sehr oft (insbesondere im Supermarkt), dass Menschen irgendwo herumstehen und viel viel mehr Platz einnehmen, als notwendig wäre. Insbesondere, wenn man sich mal mit asiatischen Kulturen beschäftigt ist es auffällig, wie wenig wir Deutschen nachdenken inwiefern wir andere Menschen beeinträchtigen. Ich glaube daher, die Nachbar-Kontrollier-Kultur kommt eher daher, dass wir einfach generell kaum Rücksicht nehmen oder Verantwortung übernehmen und deshalb unser rücksichtsloses Verhalten eine Trotzreaktion hervorruft.
I studied German 10 years ago in college, and just got back from a trip to Germany with my job. I have been so inspired to improve my German ever since I got back and am so glad I discovered this channel! The videos and podcasts have been so fun and helpful. This was really fun beginning to end. With regard to getting responses in German. First, I learned to start with 10 or 15 words in German. (Hello, I'm staying here in the hotel for a week, I'm in room 325, all good, but I have one question.) If you start like that, it is harder for the answer to come back in England. If you start with just "Guten Tag" or "Entschuldigung" with an English accent, that's where the dreaded answer comes in English "How can I help you?" Second, it depends where you are. If you are buying a museum ticket from a 60-year old in Weimar (former East Germany), no matter how bad your accent might be, I guarantee that conversation is going to stay in German.
Feeling guilty. I'm definitely German from the bottom of my heart :) But: If I stood quite stupidly (sorry) in the middle of a sidewalk and hindered others in their way I would smile and say sorry. This costs nothing and is just a form of being nice. To just ignore the issue I caused seems to me very German :)
In my home town of Lawrence Kansas I was fined about two hundred dollars for having an open can of beer while on the sidewalk of the residential street just half a block from my house. Walking around everywhere (except the Ubahn) in Germany with a beer was amazing.

These habits of the Germans of keeping tidy surroundings appeal to me. This so much increases concentration, and I guess does not diminish creativity. Whenever I face larger home-cleaning I go to German shop in Poland, because they are competitive on prices and creative cleaning solutions.

When I first moved to Germany, I was excited to get out and see what it was like. I grabbed my backpack and CD player (this was late '90s, early '00s) and left my apartment. I was maybe 5 blocks away and I saw a group gathered at an intersection. I walked up, looked left then right and couldn't see a car in either direction for as far as the eye can see. My German then was very rudimentary so I wasn't sure what they were all talking about. I looked left and right again, still no cars. I was wondering WTH was going on. Sort of confused why people were not crossing. There was nothing wrong with the road and there were no cars anwyhere. I was 3 steps into the road and could hear every gasping and muttering. I was even more perpelexed. I walked around (This was Trier) the city for hours, jaywalking who knows how many times. lol When I came across a friend who had been living in Germany for a few years, I mentioned it to him and he burst out laughing. A few days later, a large group of Germans and American friends went out for dinner. Everyone made their beer order, then food. Most of had our beers within 2-3 minutes, but one person I just met wa ssitting there without his. I asked him and he said "They're pouring it." Without saying anything to him, I figured I'd do him a favor and go ask the bartender where his beer was. She pointed to a 3/4 full beer in front of her. I'm thinking "What is this lady's problem? Is she dense?" Little did I know at the time, that I was the dense one. I told her to finish pouring it and give it to me. I wasn't rude, I just told her that I'll take the beer now. Only when I brought him his beer was it explained to me about that type of beer's process of pouring. What a royal jackass I was. lol I have LOTS of great stories big and small about my time in Germany. It was one of the best experiences of my life and what an amazing group of wonderful people, and a nation with a rich history, culture, architecture, language. and more. If anyone is ever on the fence about vacationing, don't waste any more thought, just do it. It's waaaaaaaaay better than you could imagine. After seeing and living in 27 states and about a dozen countries, it was one of my favorite places. I'd actually love to retire and live in Trier. I loved Germany that much.
Did you study in Trier? I used to live and study there in the mid- 80s and I still know some of the "casual passers by in the Auslandsamt". I visit Trier every now and then and I think it is one of the best cities to live in.
There is even an old German saying: ein gutes Pils dauert 7 Minuten 😂 But if you look it up in Internet, there are studies saying that it's not true. Draht beer is perfect after only 3 minutes. 😅 Typisch deutsch.

The internet thing was so strange to me! It took 3 months before we had working internet and for every step we needed to remind the internet company staff to do their job. I laughed bitterly when we received our first bill and it contained a 60 euros "service" charge.
Maybe things have changed in the past 20 years, but once upon a time in Freiburg, I was enjoying some excellent beer in the garden at Feierling brewery. Someone at my table said something very funny and I laughed out loud, and by loud, I mean Mozart from Amadeus (the movie) loud. The entire garden went silent and the evil stares aimed my way could have melted iron from 100 metres away. Moral of the story: don't be loud. Also in Freiburg (more than once), I asked if I could have a Flammenkuchen (yummy pizza-like substance with cream, onions and Speck (bacon-like substance) without Speck, to which the unsmiling waitress replied "NEIN!!!" and that was that. At the time, that was quite a common response. The moral of the story: don't mess with tradition. I think restaurants are more flexible these days, as vegetarian options are more common now, but I imagine that that waitress (if she's still working) is still saying "Nein!!!"...
I guess the Flammkuchen is already prepared and just gets warmed if you order it. Taking out the bacon just isn't possible. The waitress still could have been more friendly. I hope you still had a nice time in Germany :)
Nachtruhe ist auch absolut sinnvoll. Pünktlich zur arbeit kommen klappt besser, wenn man schlafen kann und die kinder auch. Das heißt nicht dass man nicht mehr duschen darf, sondern halt einfach keine musik oder arbeit mit schwerem gerät über zimmerlautstärke.

I apologise firstly for this being in English, I can only speak very basic German words but I am trying to learn through your videos so Danke! I can say that we have a similar thing here in the UK with internet, it just took 3 weeks for my new internet to be activated 😂 I visited Berlin in September (my first time in Germany) and one thing I noticed is Germans are very direct, that isn’t a bad thing, I actually prefer people being direct and I wish people here had some German traits!
Great video again 🎉 Another thing you could have mentioned: how quick the cashier scans the products in a supermarket. They do it so quickly that I never get time to pack and sometimes some yogurts or Eggs fall on the floor and break. It goes too quickly and the experience is super stressing (for me and my British husband at least) 😅😂
Weeelll - as an ex-cashier I can tell you most of it is a question of organisation: I never pack my stuff in bags at the checkout but put them straight back into the cart. When putting your stuff on the belt, put the heavier things first and the things the cashier has to weigh at last (that buys you a little time, he he). It's also best if you have your wallet ready when you're still in line... ...and NEVER count coins, give a banknote or pay with card. Leave the coins for little shops where there is not this rush. This way you maybe have a chance to get even with the cashier ;-)) But don't worry about this too much - because most cashiers have A LOT of FUN playing their skill (full well knowing the customers can't follow the speed).
Even if they are annoying and nosy sometimes, I think having a united neighbor culture is very useful and great for security!!! In Mexico is kinda the same but not really :'/
Especially about the trash, I really get angry if people don't sort their trash properly. Especially the organic waste should not be mixed with others. We had neighbours once who would throw everything in the Restmüll, whilch led to the cans being full 2-3 days after they were emptied so we had to store our waste in the apartment until the cans were emptied 2 weeks later or we'd have to go somewhere else to take it. Same with the other neighbors, we all were really angry at the ones who did this.
beim internet: V DSL Leitungen dauern meistens 4 wochen um fertig eingestellt zu sein aber kabel und Glasfaser leitungen sind auf knopfdruck bereit. Als wir das letzte mal einen Internetvertrag abgeschlossen haben sind wir einfach zu einem shop des anbieters in der stadt gegangen und hatten innerhalb 30 minuten den Vertrag und 4 tage später hatten wir internet (das war die Lieferzeit von dem Router) man sollte einfach direkt in den Shop gehen wenn man in der Nähe wohnt, man bekommt direkt eine Person die (zumindestens in meinem Fall) halbwegs kompetent ist und uns eigentlich alle fragen beantworten konnte
I love this channel. I find the pronunciations to be very easy to understand, and I'm regularly not really reading the subtitles and still understanding much of what is being said. German is a fantastic language!
I just had a funny moment. I was talking on Zoom to a possible future business colleague, in California, he is a native German. (We had most of the conversation in German.) We decided we would speak again "In October or so." He immediately shifted to opening our calendars and a specific day and hour. Exactly like the video !!

We only talk about racism and intolerance but nobody really says thank you for everything we have in these countries!!!! I Felt very Safe while in Germany..... except for those "Upset & Unstable Moments in my Mind" before Repatriating to Home Country, "Upset Moments" which were caused because of Tensions that arised in my Personal and Family Life way back in my Home Country. I had to Return in a "Hurry" to my Home Country...... something like "Run Lola Run".🏃.... Otherwise I would have Explored Some Cultural Places of Germany before Repatriating to Home Country 😊.

Tatsächlich kommen alle Situationen ausser der Flaschenpfand auch in meiner Heimat genauso vor. Ich komme aus der Schweiz und obwohl unsere Länder kulturell sehr ähnlich sind, gibt es sehr viele auch grössere Unterschiede im Alltag.
Muss sagen, ich wohne seit April in Baden (in der Nähe von Karlsruhe), und sehr selten haben die Leute an mir auf Englisch beantwortet, wenn ich auf Deutsch sprechen würde. Vielleicht ist meine Erfahrung so, weil es nicht so gross eine Stadt ist ? Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass die Leute die in Hamburg oder Berlin wohnen, dieses Problem häufiger haben. Ich bin darüber sehr froh, aber es kommt natürlich mit einem risiegen Vortel : ich muss Deutsch sprechen !
Auch sehr schön: man fährt durch eine Spielstraße und meist auch etwas schneller als 7 km/h, da steht dann ein netter Mitbürger, der jeden Autofahrer kopfschüttelnd anschaut und auf das Spielstraßenschild zeigt. Wir Deutschen sind schon ein lustiges Völkchen! 🤣

I lived in an intentional community in a small town in Germany many years ago, and was surprised at some of the conversations. Several university students were talking about going out to dance. Then a long conversation began about the pros and cons of this idea. I was so surprised at the amount of time analyzing whether it was the right thing to do, whether it was a good idea or not. This was in the 1980s, and maybe it was that group of personalities. Nonetheless, I have never overheard the equivalent in the US, unless it was in jest. As you pointed out, Germans like rules, and maybe that affects some people's ability to be spontaneous, risking making a mistake. ??? - just wondering Thank you for another good lesson. Hearing more German will motivate me to study and memorize what can be boring when it is just me and a book!
@@EasyGerman In Österreich wagt sich das auch kaum einer. Ich bin Berlinerin und wohne in Graz, was ja eigentlich auch eine Großstadt ist (300.000 Einwohner). Anfangs habe ich mich sehr gewundert, warum alle bei Rot stehen bleiben. Selbst auch am Sonntagmorgen, wenn überhaupt nichts auf den Straßen los ist...
Stimmt, aber es gibt schon Unterschiede zu anderen Ländern. In England habe ich mal als Jugendliche beim Sprachaustausch schön brav an der Ampel gewartet, weil ein Polizist neben mir stand und der guckt mich doof an und marschiert einfach bei rot drüber. In China kommt man auch bei Grün nicht über die Straße außer du setzt dich durch und läufst einfach mit ausgestreckter Hand richtung Autos los.
Dieses Video hat mich daran erinnern als ich in Deutschland gelebt habe. Heutzutage befinde mich in meinem Heimatland und es war am anfang sehr schwierig mich wieder daran zu gewonnen hier zu leben, denn das Leben ist komplett ganz anders als in DE . you can walk slowly, as long as there is a way to go around you, or you don't walk in the middle, but in a lot of places in berlin, the sidewalks aren't really wide enough.
I've been living in Germany for the past 36 years.I have lived 18 years in England & also been in the U.S. Travelling in Europe made me realize Germany has many positive points. When in France I aske for something, they answer in french which I don't understand. In Germany I had to go to a solicitor or go to court as here live a lot of people with mental problem. But I am still very happy to live here
You cannot cut grass or use noisy gardening machines on a Sunday. You cannot be noisy at Mittagspause , usually between 12 - 2.30 h, for example some landlords require that you do not practice a musical instrument then. Shops are generally closed on Sundays. One of the few exceptions are petrol/gas stations. In some areas in Germany you can only buy milk or bread in a filling station then, if you come by vehicle. They might not serve you if you walk in or come by bicycle.
Regarding the use of English, I actually had the opposite experience in Berlin as most people would speak German to me. For example, one time my wife and I wanted to take a boat ride on the Spree. We went in the shop to buy the tickets. I asked the attendant (in German) if she spoke English and she replied no, so the transaction and further information (we had to go around a park because the direct route was closed due to construction) was carried out in German, which luckily I understood.
yes, for maybe 50% of germany this is correct, especially older people and in rural areas. But the point is, as soon as they are able to speak english, they "deny" to speak German. It's more like everybody want to take the chance, to practice the others language, or to be polite to the other.
If you want to practise your German and German dialects, go to the smaller cities and villages :) I was asked for directions and politely asked if it's OK to give them in English, worried I could make a mistake in German. The man instantly said "NO!" like I offended him. 😃
9:40 Bei dem Thema falscher Müll im Mülleimer geht's vor allem um's Geld. Ich weiß nicht, ob das nur bei uns in BW der Fall ist, aber man kann Strafgebühren für falsch beladene Mülleimer bekommen und das wird dann auf die gesamte Wohngemeinschaft umgelegt. Ich will also nicht wegen meinem Nachbarn mehr für die Müllentsorgung bezahlen.
Umso mehr ich solche Videos schaue, umso stärker sehe ich deutliche Differenzen. Man merkt daß es das Konstrukt "Deutschland" noch nicht so lange gibt, und die Kultur zwischen den Regionen entsprechend divers ist. Dieses "typisch deutsche" gibts hier in Baden in vielen Aspekten lange nicht so stark ausgeprägt wie anderswo, hier herrscht eher ähnlich dem Klima eine südländisch entspranntere Mentalität von "Leben und leben lassen" vor.
Immer spannend, aber ich glaube alle Regionen, grade die am Rande gelegenen, denken von sich dass sie weniger klischeedeutsch sind als andere. Bin selbst aus Schleswig-Holstein und auch hier sagen die Leute, dass alles ein bisschen entspannter und entschleunigter ist (so ein skandinavisches Lebensgefühl, während südländisch wohl mit wild fuchtelnden Handbewegungen verbunden wird). Ich denke am Ende erfüllen alle Regionen viele der Klischees, einige mehr und andere weniger.
@@haisheauspforte1632 ich habe es eher auf den preußischen Einfluss zurückgeführt, der ja gerade in Baden, Württemberg und vorallem Bayern nie so vorhanden war wie in weiten Teilen Deutschlands weiter nördlich. Es sind so ganz viele Kleinigkeiten. Am Freitag abend gegen halb 10 ging z.B. mein Vater mit seinem einjährigen Enkel im Kinderwagen spazieren, weil Hochzeit gefeiert wurde und, es langsam Zeit was zu schlafen. Dann schrie er mal ein bisschen, ehe er dann einschlief. Und eine Frau die ihm auf dem Gehweg entgegen kam, blökte ihn an "kein wunder daß das Kind schreit wenn man um die Zeit noch unterwegs ist". Mein erster Gedanke als er das erzählte war sofort, das war bestimmt einer von den vielen Touris hier, und auf keinen Fall ein Einheimischer. Denn solch eine Reaktion in der Situation erscheint mir irgendwie recht abwegig. Ich meine mit Südländisch nicht alles gesagte möglichst groß zu vergestikulieren, sondern einfach daß es irgendwie entspannter ist, wir hier guten Wein anbauen und auch reichlich selbst genießen, und es alles nicht so verbissen sehen sondern lockerer. Selbst merkt man das ja erst mit den Jahren, wenn man auch mal wo anders war, und viele Leute von wo anders getroffen hat. Ich hatte schon Arbeitskollegen, die wurden von dem Stuttgarter Umland nach Freiburg verliehen, und sind freiwillig ein vielfaches länger geblieben wie sie mussten. Weil sie meinten die Stimmung wäre so viel positiver und freundlicher. Während die Leute in Stuttgart wenn der Zug mal 5 Minuten Verspätung hatte direkt unfreundlich wurden und schier am herum ranten waren, fragten die Freiburger wenn die Verspätung 10 Minuten überschritt überhaupt erstmal nett nach, was denn los seie. Oder so Geschichten die man aus anderen Teilen Deutschlands immer wieder hörte, daß Leute im Hochsommer bei 35 Grad 4 h im liegen gebliebenen Zug sitzen blieben bis sie schier kolabierten usw, sowas wird hier gefühlt nie passieren. Bei allen derartigen Vorfällen gab es hier immer ein Bild, wenns gar nicht mehr weiter ging wurde nicht lange auf die Obrigkeit und Anweisung gewartet, sondern die Leute stiegen einfach selbst aus und gingen zu Fuß weg :D
Naja, weiß ich nicht. Ich denke dass in so einer Situation die meisten Deutschen sich irgendwie versuchen würden individuell durchzuschlagen, ist auch irgendwie mega deutsch, gleichzeitig gibt es im Norden so eine Art von "Abwarten und Tee trinken" Mentalität die ich in anderwn Regionen doch oft vermisse. Man ist und bleibt entspannt und lässt sich von so nem verspäteten Zug nicht aus der Ruhe bringen. Den Einfluss Preußens halte ich persönlich für sehr gering, es sind eher die Regionen selbst. Das, was einat die preußische Provinz Sachsen (also heute Sachsen-Anhalt) war hat viel mehr mit dem bis zuletzt unabhängigen Freistaat Sachsen gemein als mit Schleswig-Holstein oder dem Saarland oder so. So Sachen wie Kultur und Mentalität sind älter und folgen dabei nicht so wirklich vorgegebenen Linien
zumindest für Schwaben ist das Pochen auf Regeln ja doch sehr klischeehaft und vermutlich auch wahr ;) denke, es gibt da eher Unterschiede zwischen Stadt und Dorf - Mannheim ist sicher anders als irgendein badisches Dorf, wo die Gemeinschaft halt funktionieren muss.
