I remind when I was about 7or 8 my father set up and aquarium the had a treasure chest with a lid the would open a close by the bubbles accumulating up the lid it would open the big air bubble would rise out and the lid would go closed, he also a a deep sea diver in then and bubbles came out of the helmet. I remembered watching those bubbles and chest opening and closing for long periods of time. It amazed me being a kid. I didn't understand the physics of it all didn't care back they but I thought I was the greatest thing. It not my cup a tea now but with kids the a amazed by the imagination of it all. And that inspired a lifetime appreciation for tropical fish noe at age 69. When Joanna said treasure chest that memory filled my thoughts. Thanks to my Dad, my desire for fish keeping is still alive within me to this very day.
My absolute favorite thing about this channel is how much it’s geared toward “fish health and happiness comes first, but otherwise do whatever you want with your tank.” It takes so much pressure off of the hobby since so many other fish channels can be very intimidating!
100%, I’ve been watching beginner videos all day trying to find something geared forward fish habitat and fish health, focusing on which habitats for which fish.. this is perfect. Thank you very much!

You guys are so down to earth, it makes it easier for new fish keepers to get educated and feel comfortable while doing so. When I was first starting out, I binged your channel and learned a TON of new stuff about certain species, aquascaping, tank set ups, etc.. just wanted to say I appreciate all you do, and I hope to see a lot more from both of you! 💜
Thank you for telling people that artificial plants and even the fun decor is okay. I would love to see u guys do some aquascapes like this. The internet is greatly lacking that basic content.
The best thing Joanna has ever said in any video....#10 Do what you want. Having fun is what it's all about. My favourite tank isn't the all singing all dancing biotope that took me ages to do. It's the 20 gallon where I used blue gravel, white sand, some resin palm trees, beach huts and sail boats...and I created a desert island scene.😊
Botanicals are something that can look great in an aquascape, but they do break down over time and those broken bits of leaves can be annoying during a gravel vac. Great video! I think my tanks have become somewhat more utilitarian over time as I have gained more experience with my fish and the way I have aquascaped their tanks. Aquascaping, though, is what makes fish keeping fun and interesting.
Wow... Thank you both. I am an old hobbiest from back in the 90's when things were much simpler. I have grand ambitions, however, I may not have the time or space for my dream set up. I appreciate you bringing up many of these points. Have a wonderful new year.
Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you this video as well as ALL your Monday morning videos. Can't think of a better way to start my Monday's than watching you guys. Have a happy week.
Another great show! I couldn’t agree more with your list. It all boils down what you like and what the inhabitants like, it’s all about enjoying our hobbies🙂 thanks again folks.
As others have said below, your #10 tip, which you feel is really #1, is why I LOVE your channel. Tanks guys :) This type of advice is worth more than money. You two are the best. Be well and again, thank you!
This is a wonderful video. My first tank was the basic 55g which is very difficult to aquascape due to the narrow dimensions front to back. (The next one was a 40 breeder-great for aquascaping!!) The 55 didn’t offer a lot of space to move things around, particularly when I fell in love with a larger piece of driftwood. I also learned to look at the tank from the side to see how much space the fish had to swim and room for the plants.
This was a great 10 things!! Great points on things to consider before setting up an aquascape or a tank! Thank you guys for always taking the time to help all of us in our hobby! Things I have definitely learned are being careful with betta fins and making sure things aren't big or small enough for fish to get stuck in them (chola wood.. I have no idea how to spell that) I had a white skirt tetra get wedged into a tiny piece of chola wood... to this day I still can't figure out how it got in there... it was really little. I literally had to break it to get him out and the fish is still alive 👍 I hope you guys are having a great week! Thank you always for sharing!!🙏🤗🌿🐟🌿💚
You guys rock! My wife just recently decided she wanted into the hobby as well and i got her her first 10g. she’s definitely team bright neon gravel 😅 I see the way you two bond over your hobby and it’s very much the same with her and I(ok I’m way more of a fish nut than her but she’s getting there lol), and it really warms my heart. Keep up the good work!
Great list to consider! I just went through my own (very similar) list when scaping a 3 gal bowl. A "best long term plants for tiny tanks" would be a much appreciated video on this channel or small scape channel 😉
Greetings from Michigan. Another great video. I presently have fake plants. I have both plastic plants and silk plants. I really love the silk ones. Very soft and no sharpness to them. I love your tanks....the wood...variety of live plants and fishies.I am living vicariously through you on your planted tanks.LOL😄🐟
Yes #10 was the best advice..... I’ve been in the Salt and freshwater hobby for over 13 years and when asked I always suggest do whatever inspires and makes you happy, and I’ll keep you from poisoning your fish lol...... I love this hobby!! Guys thanks for the great videos love the content you guys are awesome keep it going!
I love this video! I just redid my Betta tank. I have always kept Goldfish before this. I never really did much aquascaping with them. This time I decided to try a Betta and aquascape with live plants. Well, many of my plants died. Then I set up a tank that was OK, but I wasn't crazy about it. I looked at many aquascapes on the internet that kept Bettas in them. I found two l liked. Then I used the idea I really liked from one and two things I really liked from another tank and put those ideas together for my aquascape. I have a mix of live plants and fake plants. Plus, rocks and a fish store decoration. I am now in love with this aquascape! My fish, Monet seems quite pleased too. He really explored when I completed the "renovation" of his home. I also have discovered that like Joanna, one Betta is not enough! I now have a second Betta named Buddy. Oh, and thank you for the advice about really thinking about adding shrimp to my betta tank. Monet for sure would have eaten them! I did get a nitrite snail and Monet bugged the heck out of it. I had to remove the snail to keep Monet from killing it. I have put the snail in with Buddy and they are happy together. Sorry this was such a long comment. You two are the best. ❤🐟
Bad habits and fish!! I was wondering about the wet spots around my aquarium... I just caught my pearl gourami getting out for a smoke break!! Ok got that out of my system! I recently did an aquascape that I love but see it being problematic if I ever want to catch anything! Loved your video!!!!
Happy Monday. Really good advice, my first attempts at aquascaping were always to cluttered which didn’t look great and made maintaining the tanks difficult. However since I found this channel things have improved immensely 🤓
Love u videos. Always full of good info ..... I've been wanting to go from fake to live plants for a while now, so am getting as much info as I can. Shame all you good you tubers don't ship to the UK
Good Morning, this video has a lot of good content. I love people that set up a tank and will post,” What fish should I get”.? Research Research Research. Water quality is a big thing too. Who wants to always be worrying about having to adjust the PH or Hardness, I only have fish I know will be successful . Love from Wisconsin!
Happy Monday!!! Great tips, especially #10, and right on time. I was just handed down a 29 gallon and will be planning over the winter how to scape it but might end up being the kids tank so I can reclaim my 75
@@aquienpuedainteresar4188 My current 29 Gallon has 8 Rosy Red Minnows. A female Beta. And 4 Nerite Snails. People look at minnows as feeder fish but I'm finding them to have alot of personality when they are kept in a sizable school with plenty of room to swim.
I totally relate to that girl from #9. I made the mistake of buying this really nice looking piece of spiderwood for my first tank that I have now, but it's so hard to clean and its tearing my bettas fins! Now after seeing this video I'm tempted to rescape to something more manageable
Mbuna mock me by repeatedly digging up my struggling vallisneria from their sand substrate. Vals super-glued to stones gradually lose their grip, so next up is fishing line. Java fern and anubias mostly lose their bouts with intermittent diatoms. These fish always seemed to value the cover of artificial plants, but there are many benefits of real plants. Thus, I persist. I have never before experienced beard envy. 🤜🤛 Another wonderful video.
Ya, mbuna can make you crazy - you put them in a tank and they look back and say - watch this - thanks for the tank! As they proceed to "make it their own". Haha
My opinion on best fish for aquascaping are my ghost cats. They just wiggle in some coverage and never move until night. Sometimes I wonder what they think about.
You all make a great couple. IMO when couples come.out together in these videos or podcasts, it goes to 💩. You all are really great together and seem to make each other shine! Keep up the great work!
As I do agree with this video in regards to fish keeping, in my opinion, aquascaping has more to do with the scape itself. I think that is the main focus of a true aquascape, then once that is complete you pick your fish based on what you built. That is unless you are designing a particular scape for a specific type of fish like most chiclids for instance. I see true aquascapes having the tank itself be prioritized vs picking fish first. Just depends though in all honesty whom you are and such. I am one to design first then pick what fish or shrimp I want to go in afterwards based on my composition or layout. Me personally...I also find the word aquascape used when (if we are being honest with ourselves lol) it really just a boosted up fish tank. Aquascaping imo is were the scape is the focus of the tank, wether it's a nature style, black water, or whatever...throwing some plants rocks &/or wood in a tank shouldn't be considered aquascaping imo...again, this is all just personal opinion. Your channel is great for all kinds of fish keeping advice and such and I have watched a ton of videos from your channel, but what I consider aquascaping is something like Green Aqua or George Farmer.
My plan because i'm in a wheelchair is to do mostly artificial but add some moss balls and live floating plants to help with water quality. I guess though if you do a biotope with the right fish you are guaranteed to have success as it would suit the fish better. I wonder what you think about 10 Espei rasboras, 6 albino Cory cats and 3 Nerite snails.
I’m working on my tank for future Axolotls, some say to keep good lighting for the plants, but my Axolotl’s health comes first so I’m searching for plants who can grow well in dim lights. I already have a ton of Java moss
I noticed that you have several beautiful tanks with extensive decorations. Whenever you perform a Water Change, how do you clean the substrate? Do you have to remove all of the decorations, do you just clean around the decorations, or do you ignore cleaning the substrate?
I love your scapes. I am not much of an aqua scape. I have 16 nano size tanks. Keeping them clean is easy for me. I only use aquarium coop easy planters and plastic plants abs a few rocks and decorations. It’s easier for me to manage algae and vac the tanks. I clean all my tanks twice a week and do water changes twice a week. Filters are cleaned every 4 weeks. Most of my tanks have one betta with a snail or so in them. My 3 10 gallon tanks have each a betts and one has runny nose tetras and the other one fold white clouds with honey gouramis. The other has 1 betta 3 panda catfish and 1 glo tetra. I keep populations down in 10 gallons but have catfish in each. It takes me about 4-5 hours a week to clean my tanks. I would love to try a tank with aquascaping next. But maybe just one so I can take care of it properly. You both are amazing and I thank you for all the great videos and advice you give everyone. Keep up your great work. We all appreciate you both ❤️❤️
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I really use silk plants for betta tanks. I wish I had the talent for aquascaping. I’m not confident enough to try yet. I m thinking of setting one up and trying. I love he look of all the plants rocks and wood in the tanks.
In a tank with multies, will they dig under the rocks or just move the loose gravel around? Trying to figure out if I will be able to put some bigger river rocks in the aquarium.
I've watched so many fish videos trying to plan my first tank and somehow #2 blew my mind. I knew I wanted a betta and they like big leaves for hiding and resting against? but what kind of gravel or sand do they like? I remember this rumor that they eat certain roots is that true? I'm not actually looking for a response. I'm just saying I'm happy to have more to look into! It seems obvious now but I just needed someone to say it for me to realize.
Gonna do you guys in the comments a favor, when planting some plants especially dwarf hair grass and other carpeting plants, plant them before you put water in the tank, just use moist substrate, because then you can pack your plants tighter without the risk of them all popping up and stressing you out... (I am not a pro or good at explaining things so do some research on how to do this)
I'm the opposite of what you mentioned in number 10... I'm interested in the plants! I'm nervous to keep fish, I want them to be safe and healthy. I think I will start with just plants for a few months to see how I do then maybe add a fish. I really like the guppies I have been seeing, would those be a good "beginner" fish?
Can I use my Acrylic paint while the fish tank is already set up? I liked having the clear back but now I would like to have a black background lol. Thanks!
When it comes to fertilizing planted aquariums the dosing requirements are they based on minimal plant stocking or how does that work. Each one has its own measurements but I feel like if the plant stock is larger you could dose a little more than the amounts suggested in bottles. Like seachems. Or corys ?
Great question - You are right. It is based on an average plant stocking level, but the types of plants and their growth rate will also have a major impact. It really is an art for the most part finding the right levels for your tank.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics awesome ty my red plants seem to be doing the best and I’ve learned that the plants the like my water make it and the ones that don’t I won’t purchase anymore. Still a beginner to plants. Always trying to learn
Iv heard and read some plants can have hitchhikers like snails, eggs, worms, etc or plants that can contain parasites, disease, etc thag can be found at petstores and online. Where can i get safe plants??
where can you buy pieces of wood that are root-like and awesome without spending a ton? just small pieces of mopani are really expensive but are SO COOL i want it in my tank!
Lol! I remember my mums buying me one for my b-day (and Black Sabbath's 'Master Of Reality'). The dead pirate skeleton with the seachest was spankin' too!
