13:00 - IF I won a lottery and had to appear at a press conference or a public event to claim my prize there would be one more person I would hire, a hollywood level makeup artist who had signed a NDA. I would show up looking totally different that how I actually do look, some were between a hipster and a homeless person. I would answer questions with “yes”, “no” or “I don’t know” with zero elaborations being the answers to all of the questions.

You could just wear a mask, and simply be the worst intervee ever. You don't have to answer questions. You don't have to have your image put out. You just need to identify who you are. At most you'll just be a blurb on a local news story. >John Smith won the lottery, he declined an interview. They can't force you to appear on TV or be interviewed. At most they can do is release your name. Except in those six states. They aren't going to release your BD, or address, just your name.

Here in California since COVID, the California Lottery has STOPPED listing you NAME when you when WIN Mega, Power Ball or Super lotto. Now they just list the city the ticket was purchased in.

Make sure your financial advisors are a fiduciaries. Make sure they are legally responsible to have your best interest at the core of their moves and not their commissions.

Usually good advice, but fiduciaries are still not perfect and not always liable the way we would want. I just went through litigation against a fiduciary that mismanaged an trust with an insurance policy. They ended up winning because of the "In Good Faith" Clause. Look it up... it was written into law in the 90's and it is a little loop hole for banks and managers to get away with stuff. They literally got away with it because they technically didn't commit a felony, like they didn't embezzle or kill somebody. They just mismanaged the trust. Ridiculous.

@@San.Garcia I trust quite a few Saint Vincent De Paul (the charity not the thrift store) no member is paid. Their only expense is a phone Doctors Without Borders. I know several doctors who pay the tab to travel to Africa, Haiti, and other trouble spots The Shriners 94% of all money raised goes to help children in burn wards Santa Cruz vet clinic in South Tucson provides pet care of the poor at very reasonable prices 1/5th of regular vet visit Bringing out your best thrift store on the east side of Tucson supports a women’s shelter Humane Society Thrift store on Broadway sells donated items and uses money to “Fix” feral dogs and cats to control the pet population

I don’t play the lottery, but found this video interesting just as advice if you ever comes into an unexpected large sum of money…i.e. inheritance, business windfall, etc. My takeaway: Lay low, make arrangements to protect access to you, put a team together, then collect the money and make a long-term financial plan.

about 25 years ago, someone in Wentworthville, Sydney won 26 million AUD. This is a lower socioeconomic area. The winner remained nameless, and donated all the winnings to charity. The winner said he/she already got everything he needs in life so just gave it all away. Winning a huge windfall often is a curse with the winner never equipped to handle such amount of money. Quite often it made their life more miserable in the long term.

He is absolutely correct. Do not sign your ticket until the attorney says to sign it-but as your Trust or LLC. Saw another website that says if your state does not have a privacy protection law, tell your attorney you want to claim prize as LLC. But by all means, get professional help to protect yourself. You'll be glad you did.

True. But unfortunately in California, you can’t claim the ticket under an LLC. Your name will be published. And you must sign the ticket as an individual. The only real option to maintain privacy is to legally change your name before claiming the ticket.

@@mikehancho2082 Well, that sucks. I'm North of you in Oregon (did live in Sacramento for a few years). The lottery HQ in Salem says they want to "prove" it's an actual person. I've been trying to get a hold of a tax attorney my friend told me about to find out if a winner "can" claim as an LLC here. He's hard to reach. I'm kinda feeling you can, but I want to make sure. From my research, I've found nothing in Oregon law that says you can't claim as an LLC.....yet. The dude who won the $1 billion Powerball in Portland last month came forward. He is an immigrant and probably knows nothing about Oregon law, or his options. So now his face is all over the place, he's going to get bombarded with phone calls and everything else. But I don't want people calling me. I will change my phone and move, but you need to be fully up to speed in the event you hit all 6. But I would absolutely change my phone number. Instantly.

@@mikehancho2082 Well I guess there is a down side to everything. You're lucky. CA does not have a "state tax" on winnings. That blows my mind there is no tax in Calif for hitting Powerball. I'm North of you in Oregon and they will gouge you on state AND local taxes. 8% for state and 9% on local-on top of the 24% the Feds get. I can understate the 8% or so for a state like New York, but we are not populated like NY. 5 or 6% would be more adequate.

Personally I would take the 30 year annuity due to the fact that it is a lot easier to manage smaller amounts of millions than the a lump sum. Also that guarantees that a lest for the next 30 years of your life you will have money no matter what and if you pass your love ones could still benefit. Now in your case it makes more sense to the lump sum since you know exactly what to do with the money.

Just invest it all into index funds, and shift from index into specific stocks as you get an idea for what specific stocks you would like to be invested into. The point as to why annuity is so bad is that you are at the mercy of inflation, while being invested into stocks ensures that you own actual capital that will grow with inflation.

Everyone says stocks but most ppl ain’t gurus & end up paying a team to gamble the money only for a random crisis to tank the market. Lotto winnings is an unearned windfall, it’s best for one not to get too far ahead of themselves if they wanna keep it around long enough enjoy it or make a generational impact

Thank you for the in-depth information! So many other YT videos and websites just gloss over what needs to be done. You give detailed, step-by-step actions that help new winners. The only thing I would add is make sure you get a receipt from the store when you buy your ticket. It's additional proof that YOU bought it and no one else. And keep that receipt with the winning ticket.

Telling your wife right away seems like a big mistake. Should probably wait a couple of days prior to claiming the prize, then you should tell her. Trust absolutely no one because anyone's word of mouth will be detrimental to you.

@@lindembergl I didn't say don't tell your wife, I said don't tell your wife until there's only a couple of days left before you make your claim. You must always tell your wife for legal purposes (even if one is thinking of divorcing their wife/husband). But here's the thing, telling anyone, no matter who they are, is putting another level of risk because humans are humans and some will be too excited to keep a secret. Guess what happened to some ex-lottery winners? They told their best friends/family/strangers and got murdered for it or taken huge advantage of. Human nature (for most) will always come out and not in a good way.

Florida just recently added... Beginning May 25, 2022, the names of Lottery winners claiming prizes of $250,000 or greater will be temporarily exempt from public disclosure (pursuant to F.S. 24.1051(3)(a)) for 90 days from the date the prize is claimed, unless otherwise waived by the winner. Which is nice. It gives you some time to get used to the money and make decisions, and or move before it becomes public knowledge.

I'm not from the US so the process is a little different but the video was still useful. Fortunately in my country I can claim the prize anonymously, I also play online so I won't have to worry about my ticket. I know I'll tell my parents first, then open multiple accounts, collect the money and then contact a group of financial advisors. I think I'll tell my siblings after all the emotions will settle down and a general plan is set up. And I'll wait some time before making any purchases. I will pay all debts and share money with my family, so my parents can retire and my siblings can live comfortably

This reminds me of a movie which title escapes me atm. The protagonist basically went around telling almost everyone that he won and everyone wanted his business despite not having cashed out his "winning". He basically rolled with it and temporarily improved his life.

Only one change: If married, don’t tell your wife UNTIL hiring all professionals and the day (maybe even minutes) you are ready to sign the paperwork for the trust. Reduces chance leaking information before sufficiently protected. 😂

Don't pay 1% in fees. High network individuals over $5mil will pay 0.75% to 0.5%. Even lower when you are up over $20mil.
