First of all, thank you to everyone who tuned in to our previous video(s). We read each and every comment and have enjoyed hearing the differing perspectives, which many of you graciously offered. We appreciate all of the love and wanted to send a huge “Hello and thank you!” to our new subscribers.
In today’s video, we’ll be sharing ten things we love about living in the U.K., having lived in Scotland now for a month. We’re tackling fun topics and nothing too serious as larger topics such as the NHS deserve their own videos. We appreciate your support and can’t wait to keep sharing the countless things this beautiful nation has to offer.
Next week, we'll discuss the Scotland home buying process, so be sure to turn on your notification bell!

I read something once about guns that made me feel a little sad for the USA. In 1996 there was a terrible school shooting involving young children in Dunblane, Scotland. The UK was so shocked and traumatised by it that it lead to an immediate toughening of the gun laws, which have never been questioned since but also a negative attitude to guns in general. Contrary to what Americans believe, guns are not illegal in the UK. Some guns are illegal but it's just that ownership is highly regulated. But there is also just no general interest in them apart from pest control or sports. In contrast, a similar tragedy happened in the USA in Sandy Hook in 2012 but nothing really changed. There has never been a school shooting in the UK in the 28 years since Dunblane yet there have been over 200 school shootings in the USA in the 12 years since Sandy Hook. It is as though America has lost its ability to be shocked.

Slightly wrong that nothing has really changed. Gym sales have gone through the roof and they want to arm the teachers,etc.
@georgedyson9754
@georgedyson9754 11 дней назад
There is a very strong gun culture in the US which, I suppose, dates back to revolutionary times when the Constitution framers wanted to prevent the government from becoming too powerful by legalising 'well regulated militia' from the population, in the second amendment. This has been recently re-interpreted by the Supreme Court to mean that every citizen has the right to own a fire arm. Sure there can be regulations limiting that ownership, but very strong pro-gun lobbies by organisations such as the NRA (National Rifle Association) have made politicians reluctant to make strict regulations or risk not being elected.

Enjoying your videos. We did a similar(but different) thing with our 3 boys almost 20 years ago. I'm Canadian and met my Yorkshire husband ( while travelling in Africa). Short version...he moved to Canada and we've lived in very remote places -(he's a teacher)and raised 3 boys and then decided to take a year away(not as big a commitment as you) and we returned to the UK and did some backpacking through Europe etc. as well. Our boys were 8,11 and 14. How amazing an experience it was for them,raised in Baffin Island and then in the Yukon-BC wilderness, to experience life,(and go to school) in the UK and Europe. We did return to our life in Canada,which we love. But fast forward almost 20 years and our boys are huge explorers of the world,and one met a German gal on his travels and now lives there and speaks fluent German. Never underestimate what seeing and living in other parts of the world will gift you. Now in retirement we will look to living for months at a time in the UK,including Scotland with home exchanges. Exchange seeing bears daily for good sausages!😅

One reason kettles are used everywhere in the UK is the speed of boiling due to having a 230 volt system, it's just not achievable on a 110 volt system. Regarding driving, I have a friend who comes from Chicago to visit me here in Yorkshire and he was amazed that people wave you through or flash the lights to let you go and then there the thank you and acknowledgement from both parties. "It's a shite state of affairs." to quote Ewan McGregor. Made worse by leaving the EU which had decent anti pollution controls and would have prosecuted the water companies for dumping sewage in out rivers, lakes and coastal areas whilst we were in the EU. And that was what Brexit was really about. Ditching EU rules which protect ordinary people, but reduce corporate profit and we can't have that can we?. Annoying stuff like human rights, workers rights, pollution and environmental controls, food safety and animal welfare, etc. Plus ditching new EU laws about transparency on tax dodging offshore. All the guff about immigration was just a smokescreen for their real intentions, much of which came from 55 Tufton St, a far right think tank funded by dodgy US billionaires like Robert Mercer and the Koch brothers. Farage, Johnson, Truss, Steve Bannon, etc all have strong links with them and get many of their policies from them. For instance Truss's loony tax plans that crashed the economy came from 55 Tufton St.

I also watch a video series 'Adventures and Naps' which is by a Canadian who moved from Ontario, Canada to Kent in England. She has been living in the UK for eight years now, but so many of her comments match yours. She also gives a lot of information to those moving to the UK about life in the UK and some of its differences that you have to cope with. I am a Brit who over 50 years ago went the other way to Canada, but I find those who moved from North America who settle in the UK enlightening and also bring back many of the differences I remember from my childhood! Everywhere has pluses and minuses, I suppose, but Britain certainly has its quirks that North Americans either enjoy or scratch their heads about. I suppose it is partly what makes the UK 'interesting.'

Should be OK in the winter though if you prepare for it. She says she likes yorksher tea to help.

We do not have the right to roam in England and Wales... But we do have public footpaths everywhere. And I mean everywhere. There are paths that have been there for 1000s of years, often crossing private land. The land owner must maintain them. And blocking them is a criminal offence.

@@SimpleScottishLiving Here are some useful links about foorpaths & bridleways. Bridleways can be used by horses, mountain bikers, etc as well as walkers. Take your wellies as they can be very muddy from horses churning up the mud. There are a few quirks in the laws too. For instance if the official Ordnance survey map shows the footpath in the wrong place then by law the map is correct even if it goes through someones garden, or house! This has occasionally happened, although common sense usually prevails in reality. Additionally in places where there is no official footpath but you can prove common useage for 20years or more. e.g. a short cut accross a field, then you can apply to make it an official footpath This can be relevant when land changes ownership and the new owner wants to restrict access. www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-countryside-code www.gov.uk/right-of-way-open-access-land/use-public-rights-of-way www.gov.uk/guidance/public-rights-of-way-landowner-responsibilities footpathmap.co.uk/

I checked a certain US online retailer (begins with 'A') and found all kettles on sale are only 1500 watts power. In the UK those on sale are 2200 or 3000 watts so we can make our cups of tea a lot quicker as the water boils in half the time. I think this lower wattage is down to the lower US voltage. I noticed when I was there that the flex connecting electrical appliance is twice the thickness as back home (makes sense to carry the same load). I'm surprised you don't use a microwave. Despite the climate, I've never owned a clothes dryer. Only 57% of UK households own one. It's much higher in the US, even though it's a much hotter and dryer climate.

I would never make it to my destination if I was headed out! lol I would end up roaming or gazing for hours at the in-between from point A to B! LOL Yes love the safety over there. Lack of guns. I hope that NEVER changes! So many positives Scotland has over many countries. I just hope EVERYONE do not get to keen on that and decide to move over there! lol I am a fan of the longer sunlight days and the darker winters. love rain and cold and windy as well. Scotland's weather is perfect for me minus the midges! lol If I can handle Chicago's feels like negative 25 winters ..I can handle Scotland. I love a place I can wear a light jacket always lol Nothing like a windy breezy atmosphere. Have you guys encounter the Honesty boxes out there yet? Locals leave there items for purchase along the roadways and you take and leave the money there in . Also Scotland has a "free to roam anywhere law" that's wo awesome!

I have some advice for you regading the fiercest of Scottish wildlife, the "midge" or "midgie". In warm weather if you are near a river or pond you are at risk of being bitten to death by this tiny insect. Most insect repellents don't really work. By far the best midge repellent is a product by L'Oreal called "Skin so Soft". It's a hand/face skin softener by does a fantastic job of keeping you safe from being bitten a hundred times an hour.

The right to roam is something that we took for granted here. Until it was made law, we all just assumed that we could go anywhere we wanted. And we did. The only exceptions were private gardens, and we were all told never to walk across a ploughed field. It took us by surprise that it needed to be legislated, but I suppose it makes sense. The land is ours, but we have to be respectful of the people who tend it. I still remember the look on my American friends face when I told them that we were going to take a shortcut across a field one day. They were expecting to hear 'You're tresspassing on my land!' followed by a gunshot the whole time.

@@PorridgeDrawers well not exactly ‘very wrong’’, just different and I suppose that’s is due to the one fundamental difference between Scotland and England, one of population density and how habitable the land is. Apparently in the US most often the voltage in the carrier cables to buildings is similar to the voltage used most everywhere else that being 240 Volts, thats where the similarities end. When the mains gets to the building user unit the 240V is ramped down to 110Volts for some reason, I believe that a full volts circuit is made available for high load items like electric cookers and maybe water heaters but for normal circuits it’s 110V but the two types of circuits are separate.

You just reminded me of a fascinating video I watched once by an American who'd moved to England. He also was talking about the driving culture. He said the same as you. Basically, the physical layout of the roads means that everyone really has to co-operate. The roads are narrow and busy and if we don't help each other out it would be chaos. We had an American friend of my daughter stay with us recently and she mentioned a few interesting things I'd never thought about but one was mini-roundabouts which are just about every 100 metres where I live. She said they scared her but realised it meant everyone had to slow down and think about other people. You have to think about who should give way to who all the time which was encouraging a healthy way of thinking. I'd definitely never thought about it but I guess it's true.

My dad always called me 'bonnie lad' and that's what I call my son, my son-in-law and my grandson. My daughter, daughter in law and granddaughter are 'bonnie lass'. I do actually know their names too!! We have quite a lot in common with the Scots. We call children 'bairns'. My collective noun for my grandchildren is 'the bairns'.
