The Phantom, The Rocketeer, The Shadow, and Dicky Tracey were all such beautifully shot movies. Maybe plots were not perfect all the time, but visually stunning.
"I killed the Phantom!" "You killed the Phantom?, well join the club, we all killed the Phantom, but every time he's been killed......he always comes back!!." My favorite line in this movie.
I'm glad this movie is getting some love. All anyone does is crap on this movie. It is so entertaining. Love it for what it is, don't hate it for what it isn't.
Yes! He was great in The Phantom and criminally underrated in Titanic. He was an extremely handsome guy, he must have been a pain on the set, or had the worst agent ever because it's absurd how he never got bigger.
@@hollyingraham3980 a few others that one that are also quite good if you can find them would be biggles adventure through time (1986), the wraith (also 1986), Invaders from Mars 1986 directed by Tobe Hooper...and a really unique one called The Ghastly love of Johnny X (2013) which is a black and white sci-fi musical (seriously) that includes zombies and flying saucers and it is well worth checking out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eH22hqmAW9c.html
Yes...we were introduced to a young unknown jada Pinkett opp of billy😊😊😊 he was hilarious and scary in that movie. I wish he got more roles he is good.
I remember seeing this in theaters. With the rise of superhero team movies they should do “Defenders of the Earth” which includes The Phantom, Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician and Lothar.
I love this film. I used to collect the comic strips from the paper. As much of a Spidey fan as I am, I liked the Phantom strip better. I even had a couple of the comic books. The movie was amazing. Maybe the best movie that year. Not to mention one of the best comic book movies EVER. Oh, and ANY future Phantom film needs to be about the 22nd or future Phantom. And if the 22nd is the focus, Bring Billy Zane back as Kit Walker in ghost dad form. #SlamEvil
Anyone know if this is the only movie to feature Billy Zane as a good guy? Seems like every other movie, he is a bad guy. Heck, he was even one of Biff's henchmen in Back to the Future.
Yes, agreed ! I think “period pieces” , i.e, movies set in another era, are great ! The odd thing was though, all 3 of these movies just didn’t quite make it ! There was a little something missing from ALL of them. IDK.
When this movie came out, "Slam Evil!' was such a groan-inducing phrase, that no one I knew went to see it. Later, I found out that the comic strip had never ceased running in South America, and it made me re-think 'The Phantom'. I still need to read the comics and see the movie, but now I'm open to it. Thanks for another great video, Minty.
The Got Milk add campaign was absolutely in tune with Kit Walker's character. He does not drink alcohol, so every time he is at a bar, he orders milk, much to the confusion of the bar tender. Also that Diana Palmer was no push over is also totally in character with the comic. Diana was really fit, doing several sports and she had a black belt in karate.
*Great vid, Minty!!* Now that you have done this awesome movie, I would only think it appropriate to do *The Shadow* next!! *Please?* Pretty awesome how you were there while it was being filmed!!!!
Love this movie! I honestly can't believe you left out the absolutely amazing Sega game based on Phantom 2040. It's huge array of weapons and hidden paths definitely left an impression on me! Thanks for turning me on to the cartoon though. I'm definitely going to check it out!
I Love this movie!!! I've owned it on VHS, then DVD, and now blu-ray. And if a new edition comes out, I'll own that too. I love the comics. The Defenders of the Earth cartoon. The 2040 cartoon *(got the pilot movie on DVD). And the old 40s serial *(got that DVD as well). There's literally only 2 minutes of this movie that I don't like: Drax shouting in the museum. And the cheesy laser fight at the end. The rest of this movie is phenomenal.
One of my favorite comic book heroes and films of all time! I have some of the comics, The Phantom POP and the movie on VHS and DVD but I need that Action Figure.. Awesome Review like always! I definitely agree.. It deserves more love!
I still have my replica skull ring. It was a promotional item when the film was released. The movie was a ton of fun. Zane deserves credit for bulking up when others at the time just wore padded suits.
agreed this is an amazing movie! loved it at first site when it hit theaters so long ago. it's a tragedy it never got the recognition it so well deserves!!
For a second, I thought you'd already done this, but then I realized I remembered Oliver Harper's retrospective . Great movie and great 10 Things, Minty!
I love the Phantom, too. It's crazy fun. Dad prefers the Shadow... Also, somehow I doubt the Phantom was the weirdest outfit those sushi people ever saw.
@@philipmonihan8222 lol oh no I'm not saying anything negative. I've just always been a huge fan of the shadow. Love the story line of the comic books and what not. I'll admit, I haven't seen Phantom since it was in movie theaters
It is hard to take a purple suited hero riding a horse through the amazon seriously, but the film somehow made it work. It was light hearted and witty yet serious. I loved this movie as a kid.
Phantom 2040 was an excellent series wish it had lasted more than two seasons and that both were available on dvd unedited...all i can find is the movie that combines bits of the first season...the second season was never released after broadcast as far as i'm aware...remember who did the voice of Dr. Jak? Mark Hamill himself...and also remember who did the animation Peter Chung, creator of Æon Flux.
I’ve heard this but can’t confirm or remember where- supposedly, the final casting came down to Zane and Campbell. The director brought them both in simultaneously and asked them both why they should get the job. Billy Zane immediately cuts a backflip right there. Campbell watches and looks at the director and says “I uh, I can’t top that.”
I love this movie. One of my all time favorites. I thinks it's neat how toward the end of the film when Diana is leaving and the Phantom takes his mask off, the black paint around his eyes isn't there then is back in place when he puts his mask back on.
Yes! Yes! Yes! I agree! This film has taken a lot of abuse over the years, but I absolutely love it, cheesiness and all. Love the Indiana Jones-ish feel it has and Billy Zane is fantastic in the role. In fact, I think it's the best role of His entire career. Treat Williams is completely over the top in His performance but it actually works well in this film. Finally, the locations and cinematography are some of the best you'll find in any movie. Well said my friend... Great video about a great film.
REQUEST... BETTER OFF DEAD starring John Cusack. This movie is way underrated and doesn't get enough attention for its comedic genius. It should be more of a staple in the 80s movie catalog.
Mattie Fee Better Off Dead is my all time favorite Cusack film, one of the best 80s comedies is my opinion. I actually just bought it on BluRay a few months ago.
I saw this in theaters with my dad when I was a teenager, and while it had its flaws, there's something about it I always loved. I come back to it every few years and gain a little more appreciation for it each time;) And it's got Billy FRIKIN Zane it it, what's not to love!! Great video!
This movie came out when I was a senior in high school and I never watched it. You make it sound super fun so maybe I’ll give it a shot. Keep up the great work man!
I wish it would have been stronger in it's original release, but it's gotten more attention over the years. I always liked it and watch it every so often
I always felt like Indiana Jones and the black panther copied off the phantom. Indiana Jones taking the idea of adventures as a hero and black panther being the protector of a country passed down through ancestry lineage. The phantom is a classic.
Minty! Thank you for doing this one. I haven't seen this one in ages and I'm totally going to watch it again, now that you've mentioned it. I agree with you. The Phantom was totally underrated for its' time and I love Billy Zane. I'm going to be visiting Australia soon and can't wait to see all the places where some of my favorite movies were filmed. Take care and keep 'em coming!
Great vid Minty! I was always a huge Phantom fan and really feel this movie doesn't get the credit it deserves. I watched it again not to long ago and still think it holds up. The Phantom 2040 was severely underrated as well. The less said of the mini-series the better, I own it but I'm not proud of it, lol.
"The beasts call him brother, the ghost who walks!" We need a new movie basd on the Defenders of the Earth, which was an awesome version of this character.
I loved the Phantom 2040, the art style was so different to anything I was watching at the time. When I saw Aeon Flux (animated) for the first time, it got me watching because the art style, which is so similar to that used in the Phanton 2040. Whilst, for me, this got forgetten only because of the X-Men and Spiderman cartoons at the time, I can still remember the scene when one of the older character removes his VR headset and comments that it wasn't like that in his day.
I always wanted to see The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy and Indiana Jones join forces in a movie. As a firearms aficionado, I loved that The Phantom was rockin’ twin longslide 1911’s.
Totally agree with your conclusion here. I love THE PHANTOM. Loved it when I saw it in the (mostly empty) theater. And love it still. I was bummed when it didn’t do well. Thanks for doing this video and showing THE PHANTOM some well-deserved love.
The Phantom and Rick James' unity ring will leave an imprint on your head for at least a week.

The Phantom was also in "Defenders Of The Earth", a cartoon starring Flash Gordon, Mandrake (a master illusionist), Lothar (based on a character from King Solomon's Mines) and the Phantom. It had the 4 heroes and their kids fighting against Ming the Merciless and his Ice Warriors. Was a great cartoon and my first introduction to the character of the Phantom.
