Oh, thanks. Happy to hear it was helpful. You're not wrong. it's very easy to make a costly mistake while learning the ropes. Best of luck with your Mini 3, cheers!
Hey Steve! Thanks for these insights. Very useful. I’m a huge fan of your channel. When I got my first drone, your channel was one of the first that I latched on to for tips & tricks. Now I’m a professional drone cinematographer. I absolutely love it. You’ll always be the OG! Keep ‘em coming mate.
great feature tutorial! love the added details regarding the HOST port. was not aware of the external hard drive capability or the movie/playback viewing extras it offers. great details with the onscreen selections too. finally caught me on the SUB button; not sure why missed it in past; cheers, Keep em up!
@@SteveCoutts heyy thanks about the reply. I want to ask a question, can i do livestream (facebook, youtube or online..) using mini 3 pro and the dji RC?
Thx Steve! Been flying DJ since 2013. This is the first one with the RC good to get a quick overview. I see your in Rossland nd Mountain bike. Im in Canmore. If your out this wy let go for a ride! All the best.
Thanks! Yes, Rossland! I lived in Calgary for a long, long time but mostly rode in West Bragg Creek. Biked a bit at the Canmore Nordic Centre over the years though and did a couple of 24 Hours of Adrenalin races (team) back in the day too. Super fun place to ride. I will ping you if we are heading that way with the bikes. So much good riding here and nearby, not sure there will be a road trip past Fernie anytime soon though. Cheers!
@@SteveCoutts Yeah no ned to come back into Alberta to ride. The riding great out there and Fernie. My daughter live in Kamloops and coaches kids and women programs the riding out there is awesome too.
I guess you're talking about flight pause? I first shared that tip in a Spark video 5 years ago and I've shared it in many videos since. I continue to include it because I feel like it's THAT important. Maybe you're a seasoned flyer and knew about it at one time but forgot about its utility. Or perhaps you're a newbie flier and got in the air before knowing all you needed. Regardless, everyone learns and retains information differently and that's just fine. I make videos and pass along information that I feel may be useful to folks, based on my experience, not what other creators are doing. Happy, safe flying! Cheers!
@@SteveCoutts I've only used it once, and I think it's great but I'm still learning the ropes. Have you tried the RC with the Cine sticks from Scotty Does Things?
@@SteveCoutts me too. But they put power into Mavic 3 enterprise. Hopefully this software development capacities go now into air2s compatibility for DJI RC
@@SteveCoutts - Apologies, I sound ungrateful there…what I mean is that all the tips were gold, but I knew some of them already. Even so, I picked up a couple of new ones. Eventually I may become proficient at using this thing!
@@daveys Hi Dave, I didn't take it that way at all. I am genuinely happy if folks learn even one new thing. I do appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Cheers!
You are the guy that can probably answer my question. My Mini 3 Pro and DJI RC controller is still new gear for me and somewhere along the way as I was swiping screens left, right, up and down trying to figure out how to actually navigate within the controller and at some point the notifications box cleared and said "No Notifications" and it's been like that ever since. Where are the settings for that to turn it back on?
I don't believe there is a setting to turn them on or off. They get cleared after a reboot and if you manually deleted them. The pop up automatically as necessary. To make sure they are working as expected, just swipe down from the main fly screen to go in to the first settings screen and tap on screenshot. Go back to settings and you should see the screenshot under notifications. If you don't, just reply here again and we can figure it out. Cheers!
@@SteveCoutts thanks for your feedback and what you describe works as expected. I am learning. I also got used to seeing an "Explore" button in the Notifications box and that is not happening anymore. Getting in to the stored photo and video files is a kind of round about process that is not so intuitive but I am getting there in terms of figuring it out. I still don't know how to download the files off of either the RC or the drone with either of the devices plugged in to my USB-C capable computer and that should be an easy and straight forward process. Instead I have to fiddle with the micro SD cards, pulling them out and etc etc. I also do not know how all of the video/photo files laid down on the drone SD card also end up stored in the RC or how to efficiently manage those files. I did figure out how to delete them inside of the RC Android file system but that is also sort of a fiddly process. I would like to be able to logically plug in and manage all of that stuff through the computer.
@@dgibbsfl You're welcome. Explore should pop up any time a storage device, even an SD card is mounted but it seems to be somewhat inconsistent. There is a convoluted process described in the video on how to browse the filesystem should the explore option not pop up. I'm a bit old-school so I like to pop out the SD cards and copy files that way. I agree with you though, once you get in to the weeds of the Android filesystem layout, it's pretty unintuitive. That does give me an idea for a video because there are many ways to approach it and some are definitely easier than others. Cheers!
Good overview. After update is now possible to download Google offline map. But only just a tiny field. Did anyone find a way how to rise a space for downloading? Or is possible to download externally (on mobile phone is possible to download quite huge areas) and copy on RC? Thanks and greeting from Czech 🙂
Happy to hear you learned a couple new tricks. To view your screenshots, swipe down twice from the top edge of the RC screen to go in to Quick Settings. From there click on the Settings gear in the top right corner and then tap on Storage. Tap on Internal Shared Storage > Photos & Videos > Images > Movies and your screenshots will be there. Cheers!
Hi Steve. Just subscribed to your channel. Don't know how I missed your stuff but I'm on now. See yer another Canuck and beautiful area you had on the maps. I lived in the East Kootenays for 30+ years. Anyways I've been flying for 3 years and haven't quit my day job.......yet LOL. Great content and tips. Thank you
Thanks Ken and welcome aboard. I grew up in Trail and my wife and I just moved back the beginning of the pandemic. It's a beautiful part of the world for sure and we are lucky to live here! Happy flying!
Right on Steve. Thanks. Ya I live in Northern Alberta now but been over the Creston Salmo a thousand times....And the Bomby. Hauled beaver biscuits to Caslegar for years from around Cranbrook. You bet
Hi steve - wondering if you know how to view the camera image on the screen without the osd info - on my smart controller it was a simple finger stroke up to get the clean screen image… love ur work 😊
Thanks for the comment and kind words. I don't believe the feature exists on the RC at this time. It sure would be nice to have though, the flight screen is way too cluttered. Cheers!
Very useful for a 73 year old novice DJI Mini 3 Pro pilot! Any suggestion/video on how I can fly the drone by looking at the controller and not the drone Drone? Thanks.
Congratulations on your new hobby! That's a good question. Off the top of my head I don't know of any videos that would be helpful for you. For me personally I think it just happened organically. The best analogy I can think of is my wife and I got a new car a couple of years back and it was our first vehicle with a rear camera. At first I found myself struggling to "trust" the camera. I always wanted to use my rearview mirror instead. Over time though I have come rely on the camera more than the mirror and it does provide a wider view with less blind spots. I remember my beginning drone flights to be much the same. I didn't "trust" looking at the screen, I wanted eyes on the drone at all times with only quick glances to the screen to changes settings, etc. Over time, as my skills improved, I spent more time watching the screen as I felt comfortable trusting what I was seeing. Best of luck with your drone and happy, safe flying. Cheers!
Thanks for watching. As far as I know no DJI goggles are compatible with the RC-N1. If you're looking for a Goggle/FPV like experience with the RC-N1, you can check out DroneMask (dronemask.com). It is a clever, low-tech solution that brings some of the benefits of googles. Cheers!
Great video. I heard the Host port accepts a "cellular module" ? a.) What is that ? b.) What do you need it for ? c.) What is the benefit or difference between w/ or w/out one ? Thanks for your generous consideration, Sincerely ........................
Hi Steph, thanks for the comment. A cellular module or dongle is just a piece of hardware that plugs in to the USB host port and allows the RC controller to connect to a cell network and subsequently have an Internet connection. The main reason folks would want this is to update map data and do authorizations on the fly without having to pair your cell phone for data. Cheers!
@@SteveCoutts ... thank you for your timely reply. There are discount deals going on now for a few more days & thought I could swing the purchase of a DJI to step up from the beginner drone I purchased for under $200 over 4yrs ago. One more Question : (please) I thought you mentioned the Mini Pro 3 w/ DJI RC & FMK for $1098. ?? Is that so ?? Can you refer the web-site or link ? Oh, and also, the weight issue (registration over 250g), will it fly w/out being registered ? I hate gov. regulation. @@stephboeker7835 I live in Canada and the prices I quote are in US dollars from DJI's site. In the US I think there is some kind of additional tariff on DJI products so you guys pay a little bit more than we do. However, the Canadian dollar is currently only 74 cents to the US dollar, so it's a lot more expensive for us in the end - haha! As I mentioned I live in Canada so I am not intimately familiar with the US regulations and whether or not you would have to register it or not. Cheers!
pro tip 11: you can open youtube on dji rc in 4 steps: 1: go to profile 2: go to dji forum 3: find a post with youtube video in it 4: open youtube throught "youtube" button (next to video pause button) REMEMBER: there may be a case where you have to log in your google account edit: liked and edited this on dji rc
In your video you mentioned maps. Just how many of your viewers have suffered very poor sat map resolution ? , since 1.6.8 I believe. I emailed DJI regarding this and they said a few people ...... it would be looked at in future updates ..... that was 2 months and 3 updates ago. Interesting video.
Both devices can be used without SD cards. Without an SD, the Mini 3 Pro is limited to 2.5GB of internal storage for photos and videos. The RC is fully functional but you lose the extras like screenshots, screen recordings and downloaded maps. Cheers!
Thanks. There was a comment in the DJI Forum from a moderator saying that the M3Pro does not support *any* version of DJI Goggles - forum.dji.com/thread-264575-1-1.html Technically it's probably possible but I wouldn't hold your breath that DJI makes it happen. Cheers!
It's basically a low end android device hardwired to the actual remote hardware on the inside. the software has been tweaked a lot to only show relevant settings. I can see people rooting it and allowing you to use all other features you can on an android.
i'm still learn all the features and this video is awesome! ther's a way to use This DJI RC with a Virtual Flight Simulator? Becouse seems none is compatible with this RC Thanks a lot
Thank you. Unfortunately, neither the DJI RC or RC 2 allow for apps to be loaded on the device. I think it's a GREAT idea and makes perfect sense to have it on the controller. After all, the RC controllers run Android and there is an Android version of the Virtual Flight app, so you would think that DJI could just build it in should they so desire. You can always try submitting a feature request in the DJI Forums (forum.dji.com). DJI has been known on occasion to implement user suggestions so it is always worth a try. Cheers!
I've read about DJI Forum but they don't seem to have plans to implement them in the future (also after many sudgestion) I also saw that there is a way to install apps on RC PRO and also to use it as an android device but I still haven't figured out how to "lock" the programmer mode. I need to study some more Thanks again for the video @@SteveCoutts
Excellent, very clear and concise. A shot in the dark. Do you by chance know how to load Apps like the Dronelink (Beta) for the Mini 3 Pro? I think I may have a clue like downloading the APK file onto a PC and transferring it onto a Micro SD Card and placing it into the RC. The only thing (well, probably not the only thing...) is figuring out how to run only one application (Dronelink or Fly) Anyway, thanks again
Thanks for the kind words. No, sorry I don't really know anything about hacking apps on to an Android device. I quickly looked at the Dronelink website and looks like you're on the right path with the APK file. The RC doesn't permit app loading like the RC Pro does so that may be the first hurdle. I'm sure eventually someone is going to hack it. Good luck!
DJI Mini 3 Pro: When looking on the RC controller and attempting to focus track something or someone, we are finding it very difficult to initiate a lock on with the green box. But we do notice in video demonstrations that there is a grid and a yellow box similar to the focus on one’s iPhone. We do not get that. Why? Could this be our problem?
I have not done a deep dive in to focus track yet so I don't have an answer for you. I have used focus track a bit and noticed the issue you're talking about. In situations where I was having trouble my initial thought was the subject was too small and/or not enough contrast between the subject and surroundings. I don't feel camera focus has anything to do with it but it's hard to say without doing more testing. Cheers!
I'm still waiting on one of these remotes to be retrofitted to work on an older DJI drone. I would snatch one up in a heartbeat if it would work with my Inspire 1. However, I'm not going to hold my breath, lol
As far as I understand the original DJI RC does NOT support video out. Apparently it's possible with the RC 2 but I haven't tried it. You can try searching the DJI Forums for more information (forum.dji.com). Cheers!
Merci pour ces astuces intéressantes. Question: peut-on comme jadis avec le Phantom 3 régler le RTH sur la RADIOCOMMANDE au lieu du lieu de décollage (pratique quand on se déplace en cas de déconnexion). Merci. Google Translate Thank you for these interesting tips. Question: can we, as before with the Phantom 3, adjust the RTH on the RADIO CONTROL instead of the take-off location (practical when moving in the event of disconnection). Thanks.

Hi very informative video. Quick one with respect to the microphone did you try any BLUETOOTH devices (headsets etc)? I'm curious to know what bluetooth devices would work. Thanks and keep making great content. Trinidad and Tobago in the house.
Great summation of functions. I was exploring and hit the x button to the right of notifcation and I can no longer select the SD card for veiwing on left side of the screen. I tried resetting but that didn't change the screen.
Thanks. In the video I explain how to get it to come back up. From the Quick Menu you have to go in to Settings, Storage, scroll down to your device, in your case the SD card and eject it. Click on it again and choose mount and it will pop up again in Notifications. Cheers!
Thank you for the quick response. I've tried ejecting and mounting the SD card with no luck. What I have is the left side of the screen says "no notifications" in the center with a black background. I also tried "reset app preferences" and I'm reluctant to try a factory reset.
@@dronedevices Interesting. Another thing to try is to go in to the Quick Menu and then physical eject the card and re-insert it. After it’s re-inserted, it will get mounted and it should pop up under notifications. If it doesn’t perhaps there is an issue with that card. Technically, you shouldn’t just pop the card out, you should eject it first. I won’t do it with my Mini 3’s microSD card but I do it with my RC all the time because I’m not too worried about it getting corrupted and I lose some screenshots or screen recordings.
@@dronedevices If you're talking about hitting the X to clear the notification, there is no way to reverse it. Once you clear the notification, it's gone. What I described in my other reply is basically re-mounting the SD card so it pops up in notifications again. Cheers!
Nice Video! Do you know if there is a way to turn off the overlay on the display? I'd like to have a clear display without all the graphics every once in a while. I know the DJI App on the iPhone does have this option but I can't find it on this remote control. Thank you!
Thank you! I tried every finger swiping combination I could think of while making this video and nothing worked. I tried a few times after software updates and still nothing. I do miss the feature and it would great to have it on the RC but clearly it is not on DJI's radar. You can always try posting a feature request on the DJI Forum (forum.dji.com). DJI occasionally responds to the desires of their user community.😀 Cheers!
Oh gosh, I have no idea but my gut tells me no. It still doesn't support the Mini 2 and I thought for sure that particular compatibility was a no-brainer for DJI to add. Happy flying!
Great video. Thanks! Is this compatiable with the DJI Assistant 2 app on the PC? It won't recognize it for any updating. Or because it has it's own WiFi does that make it not needed?
My guess is it is exactly what you said but I have not tested it with DJI Assistant 2. I rarely use that app, only for oddball circumstances it seems. Cheers!
Thanks Steve, very valuable video ! One question, do you know how to enable Developer Options on this DJI RC ? I am trying to hook this DJI RC up to the Flight Simulator but can't get it to work. Whenever I connect the RC to my computer it displays a notification "Remote Controller already connected to computer" and then the question to enable developer options pops up... But where to enable developer options ? Thanks.
Thanks Stephane! Sorry, I have never touched that option before so I don't have any experience with it. You could try posting that question in the DJI Forum (forum.dji.com). Lots of knowledgeable, helpful folks there and perhaps someone has the answer for you. Good luck!
Hi. Of the Mini line, the DJI RC only supports the Mini 3 and Mini 3 Pro, which is kind of crappy in my opinion. The newer DJI RC 2 only supports the Mini 4 Pro. So it looks like you're stuck with the older remote units. Honestly though I don't understand why DJI doesn't make them compatible with a broader range of Minis. These RC remotes are more powerful than the N series remotes, surely they could support the same basic features on older drones. I think it's more of a case of DJI pushing you towards an upgrade. Cheers!
If you plug a USB-C wired phone headset - such as the AKG ones Samsung used to provide after removing the headset jack on their phones -you will get the system audio that is muted when plugging in a microphone. Alternately, you can connect Bluetooth earbuds to capture the audio, but some mute the USB mic. Come on DJI, just put a small mic back into the body of your controllers for quick screen recordings where audio quality is secondary to convenience. Note: Autel's huge 7.9" -2000 nit Smart Controller, in various versions supporting V1,V3,V3 transmission bands, has 2 buttons on front. RTH and Pause. BOTH have 3 second delay when you press and hold. That's terrific to prevent unintentionally activating return to home. It is potentially catastrophic for "Pause/Stop" emergency button. 3 seconds is an eternity when a collision is imminent with someone's property or, say a adolescents HEAD. Tried to alert them, contact them, called, send emails, noted the issue in forums... Nothing. Nada, zero. zip. Either they couldn't modify a hard coded function, didn't care or didn't want to.
I want to love the RC controller but it's the little compromises, like you mention, that make me shake my head. I think back to some of my videos where I demonstrated flight pause by flying directly towards me at top speed and yeah, a three second delay would have been pretty catastrophic - haha! Pretty big miss on Autel's part.
Thanks! No, AirSense does not require a connection to the Internet to work. It receives radio signals broadcast from aircraft, air traffic control and ground stations directly. Cheers!
If I am understanding the question correctly, you are asking if it's better to use an iPhone or an Android phone with the RC-N2 controller. I only use an iPhone so I may not be the best person to ask. That being said, I have never had an issue connecting my iPhone to the RC-N2 or any other DJI controller for that matter. I am aware that there have been compatibility issues with the DJI Fly app and some Android phones. I think overall, compatibility is better with iPhones and DJI products simply because there are a smaller number of hardware devices and operating system versions in the Apple ecosystem. With Android, there are many more hardware manufacturers and it seems like there are also more Android software versions at any given time, especially compared to Apple devices. If you're buying a DJI device that requires the use of the DJI Fly app, I would strongly suggest checking compatibility on the Fly app page - www.dji.com/ca/dji-fly. Scroll down to the bottom to see device compatibility. Hope this helps.
about audio / usb mic recording on " screen shots " , does this mean I could do a narration while flying and it will be saved to the cache drone video ?
The audio is only saved to a screen recording. Audio is *not* added to video or cached video files. Still though, you could shoot video while simultaneously capturing a screen recording and then combine them in post. Cheers!
Great thorough video I still don't like this dumb remote though. 😂 Too much I want simplicity when flying. Every single time I fly with this remote my hand depresses that stupid back arrow on the top left of the display popping out of the app while flying totally messing me up. So I sold it. 😂 Why DJI can't allow us to Isabel buttons or reassign them is beyond me! Good video though. 🤙🏾🤙🏾
Thanks! I have mixed feelings about the RC controller. I don't love it and it don't hate it. Lots of things annoy me but it's kind of nice not to have to fiddle with your phone. It could have been so much better and like you mention, reassigning buttons would be a big improvement. Cheers!
Hello there great info but i have agreat question no one has addressed with this controler. to use dji fly app on your phone to edit videos ......tried go share but doesnt work....any ideas ... can u edit videos and photos on remote? thanks
Thanks. You raise a really good point and something I didn't even consider. I do my editing on my Mac so I transfer my footage by physically pulling the SD card from the drone and loading it up on my computer. I tried QuickTransfer once just to see how it worked but never again as it's not something I would use on a regular basis. If you're having trouble with QuickTransfer you could try posting a question in the DJI Forum (forum.dji.com) lots of helpful folks and DJI Admins there. And, sadly no you cannot edit videos on the RC controller. Cheers!
Hey Steve ! Thank you for your insight . One question , in the RC controller there is a maps ? I chatted with Dji assistant and ask me that a preloded map Italy ! Why I should I upload offline maps ? Many Thanks e scuse me for bad English
Ciao Diego.
Thanks! I don't believe it can do anything like you describe. I'm curious though as to what you are trying to accomplish by incorporating your phone. 😀
I am am coming from the original mini to the mini 3 and am not sure about the new controller. I am tired of my iPhone dimming after a few minutes in direct sunlight to a place where I can't see it so I want to get the new controller but have the option to jump back to the phone if in bright light the new controller isn't any better. Plus it is nice to have maps to find your drone if needed. I know you can download a map but what if you fly somewhere different and forget to? Does hot spot allow you to do that anytime? Also with the phone you be able to have the ability to record your screen with audio much easier? Not to mention 3rd party apps. As you can see I just don't know and wanted to have the ability to try it out without ever wondering if I would have been better off with the regular controller. thanx robert
@@rappere11 The new controller isn't quite as bright as my iPhone 12 Pro but it doesn't dim due to overheating, which is a plus. I typically use a loupe in bright conditions. It works ok but it's really meant for 2" DSLR or mirrorless camera screens. A hood of some sort designed specifically for the RC would be better but I already have the loupe so that's what I use. I used the loupe with my iPhone too. I agree with your points regarding maps. It honestly never dawned on me when I chose to go with the new controller. Probably 50% of the time I have to tether my phone for maps or authorizations. Not that it's difficult, it's just an extra step, which makes it a pain. DJI needs to add a feature where you could download maps for a specific region in advance, like a whole state or province. That would be useful. I suspect DJI will release some kind of cellular dongle in the future, which will solve the maps/authorizations issue but that will potentially mean an extra monthly expense for data. I am generally pleased with the RC but it didn't really solve any problems for me. I still need my phone just in case. The RC is slower, it takes longer to boot, the screen isn't as bright, screen recordings/screenshots are an extra step, slower processor than my phone, etc. I do like that I don't have to attach my phone though. I always found that process to be too fiddly. The newer remote where the phone goes on top was much better than the bottom clamp design mind you. Cheers!
Hey Steve. My RC power/light indicators suddenly not working after the update and my mini 3 pro suddenly is not connected too. have experienced this too? what can i do with my RC?
Oh boy! That's is very strange. Sorry no, I have never experienced anything like that. I think your best bet is contacting DJI Support. Good luck! Let me know how it works out.
When might it be possible to mirror the DJI RC screen to an alternative screen so that a ‘co-pilot’ can view this at the same time? I was able to do so from an iPhone screen when using the N1 controller. It would be a retrograde step to purchase another N1 controller, I think.
That's anyone's guess John. The RC remote runs on Android so it likely has a similar mirroring feature to iOS. It's probably more a matter of whether or not DJI has any interest in doing such a thing. Pressure from the community always helps so I do recommend putting the idea out there. Cheers!
Hey Jeremy. I don't have direct experience this so take what I am about to say with a grain of salt. I believe "binding" a device to an account is for DJI Care Refresh purposes only. So when you do that binding, it activates your DJI Care Refresh and binds it to your DJI account and that device(s). In the future, if that device gets passed on to another user, you simply login with your DJI account and everything should work just fine. All DJI drones and controllers have the ability to reset and erase all data, which is a good idea to perform if you're getting a used device. You could also post the same question in the DJI Forums (forum.dji.com) to see what others, including DJI Admins, have to say. Cheers!
Both the DJI Goggles Integra and Goggles 2 only work with the DJI Motion 2 controller. They don't work with any of the conventional controllers like the RC. Cheers!
Interesting. 😀 I haven't tested it so I really can't say for sure. If I were to make a wild guess though, my guess would be that it would not support such a thing. Cheers!
I had not tried it but did tonight. I get the same result as you, D-Cinelike videos will not play. I tried pretty much all of the combinations to see if there was a pattern - MP4/MOV, Normal/D-Cinelike and H.264/H.265. It didn't matter, only videos shot using D-Cinelike will not play on the RC. What's really interesting is that my Mac won't play D-Cinelike videos unless there are encoded with H.265. Thankfully I chose H.265 when I set up my M3Pro or that would have been a head scratcher. Seems like a bug to me. If it's important to you I would open a support ticket with DJI, which may help them identify and fix the issue. Cheers!
