If a store manager gives you an issue, you can try one of these things: 1) Say that you are moving and just looking for boxes, OR 2) Say you threw a piece of trash into the dumpster and your ring came off, and you want to see if you can find it. Then leave as quickly as possible!

As someone who works in restaurants, I can say that the only problem for the store is that many leave garbage open and messy, attracting animals, which can become a health problem...In an ideal world, we would have laws on how to donate or reuse all this waste 😩

I used to be a supervisor at a snotty health food store & we would all low-key take home expires. Eventually it become too much food for all of us, so after some arguing with corporate, we were able to get weekly pick ups from a local food bank.

Hi, in the dumpster diving community is there a way of finding out whether there are people on the poverty line using the same dumpsters for their food? I'm all for stopping food being wasted but I'd hate to deprive someone who is in need.

An important addition to dumpsterdiving meat if you do that: Don't take home meat/be very wary, when daytime temperatures exceeds 5c/41f/fridge temperatures (See: summer most places), as it will more often than not be bad, and puts you at risk for botulinum infections, even if it doesn't taste or look 'off'. In general be wary of unpreserved chicken or fish no matter the temperatures as well.
@TheChickenRiceBowl
@TheChickenRiceBowl 4 года назад
To add on to that: Also be wary of cans that are dented or generally have any sort of defects to the can itself. Especially for canned meats like tuna or chicken breast, and especially if the can is dented around the edge. Even if the can is just dented and doesn't look like it's been perforated it's still best to just not bother with it. If you find _anything_ that's bloated don't jostle it or move it too much, it might explode. I learned that one the hard way with a soda can. This is just good advice in general, not just for dumpster diving. Botulism is no joke.

Yes, always leave the dumpster in the same condition that is was when you came there. I have heard that stores have been pouring soap into their dumpsters, probably because they have been tired of divers making a huge mess. I had a good local place I used to go to before but one day they decided to put their trash containers inside instead, what a bummer! I really saved money to go there every day to pick up fresh eco fruits and greens, but I think the reason why they did that was because of the problem with rats in the area.

Though dumpster diving is indeed illegal in Germany, you can sign up for becoming a foodsaver! There is an awesome non profit organization called foodsharing that let's you pick up food from cooperating restaurants and supermarkets that otherwise would have thrown it away. Please check out their website if you would like to save food in Germany: foodsharing.de/

There should be laws forbidding the stores to throw food in the dumpster. They should donate them or put them in food banks.

@@Gittemary Yeah I know! It's a law thing as well. In Greece there was a time that we tried to make stores let their expired food just out of the store in a specific box and not in the dumpster, so that people would take them easily. I know that in France dit it as well for some time. But they stopped of course because money!

i think there's probably laws forbidding them to donate packaged food past the expiry or sell date, even if it's technically fine to eat :(
@Erin-rg3dw
@Erin-rg3dw 3 года назад
Some stores do it (I know one where I used to live donated their meat to the local pantry), but often the cost (packing, moving, etc) the food to a bank costs more than trashing it. Also, it discourages people from coming in and paying for items because why would they come in and buy something when they could wait and get it for free? I wish we had more "ugly" bins in stores for food that's not unsafe, just not ideal. Stores can sell food past expiration, though they do try to move it beforehand, largely because expiration mostly affects meat, dairy, and medicines. Those items usually have a "sell" or "best by" date, which is just based on taste, not safety.

I have only recently gotten into dumpster diving, but I am loving it. It is the perfect time to start since all the plants are coming out and some are being thrown away. I have already gotten a ton of Violas and rose bouquets. I also got some meat and fruit, but not much. The only place where it is open or available is a fakta. All others are either empty or locked up, which is so sad because I am sure they have plenty to offer. (I am in Denmark as well and look forward to more dumpster diving.

@waweboardgirl

Yes it unfortunately is, I really think the law should change in this aspect 🙄 One reason being is that the law does not regulate to whom the trash belongs. So you either rob the State or the Store. But fortunately usually if you get catched doing this you will not get fined most of the time because the courts think the same and the public is not against dumpsterdiving. Important: that's usually not the case in Bavaria

When I worked in retail, I gave 0 care about dumpster divers who were keeping their work clean. As long as you don't leave a mess I don't care, it isn't me on the line if something goes wrong I was just a min wage worker. Heck, even at some jobs I would set the best stuff on the top of the dumpster pile if I knew divers were in the area. I did care, however, about fighting to try and get the most stuff donated as possible because I hate waste.

Could you not ask the shop to leave out the food in a box at the end of the day instead of throwing it out. It might be in their interest to reduce their waste. Some of the big supermarkets give food to homeless charities and shelters or sell the nearly out of date food at the end of the day for a reduced amount.

OMG please please please DON'T eat food that was in a bag with a moldy item!!! In a closed bag the mold has certainly spread to the other foods, but you just can't see it (it's still really unsafe to eat)! And also rinsing the food doesn't clean it, because water doesn't kill bacteria/virus!! You need to ALWAYS (even if its not apparently dirty) soak your veggies in water with a little of vinegar or bleach, then rinse and dry. Before dumpster diving PLEASE read a lot about FOOD SAFETY!!

I think this was super helpful but also slightly one sided. Simply saying that these stores “don’t care “ is pretty narrow minded. There are a lot of rules that stores have to follow on donating food and what they can’t sell after purchase dates expire. That’s more of a law issue in different towns & cities but one that should be recognized. I think u should maybe encourage your viewers to reach out to your town councils,etc if u want change also.
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 4 года назад
I say most store don’t care, but I have seen with my own eyes that they don’t. Yeah there is also a law, but 98% of most stores are only doing the bare minimum and on average throwing out 30-40% of all produce. They choose to buy large amounts so the shelves look nice no matter how much they know they can sell. I’ve seen it, I’ve talked to people in that industry and it is deeply affected by a wasteful mentality that for the most part is enabled laws that also do not care, but it doesn’t change the fact that most store and especially bigger chain stores care very little about the waste they produce as long as nobody sees it and if we don’t recognise that fact then it’s going to be super hard to change 💁‍♀️ and we can believe that store don’t care while also inspires change in laws and justice system regarding food
