I keep thinking why would someone want a lil creature that is SO loud, SO messy, SO expensive, SO destructive, demands SO much attention and for such a LONG time! ...then I remember kids and I'm like "Oh, ok, guess we're into this kind of thing :D".
I would rather have a bird than a kid any day (not hating on parents, you all are a special breed and we love you. Just, not my thing). But yes, we humans do seem to be into this type of life. 😆❤️

@@taistudobom whenever my friends apologize for their children, screaming or making noise in the background I always say don’t even mention it. I have a parrot you can literally hear her miles away. This is nothing.😂
I love that I got a Blue and Gold Macaw that my daughter told me that it wouldn't talk much but lives with her blue fronted Amazon and the two will not STOP talking. We have a big house with 5 kids and the birds know all the kids name and they turn on and off the Alexa. They repeat anything that is repeated over and over in the house. Music calms the birds down if they are loud but my Macaw Dalilah says "Alexa off" so the music doesn't stay on and they get loud again. Fun times!
I've had my aquatic turtle for 35 years! I was 10 and in 4th grade when I brought him home 😄 I've had my budgie for about 6 months and hope to give her the best longest life possible. Your videos have been a tremendous source of helpful information! I've also purchased toys and perches from the BirdTricks store! ❤
When we got our yellow naped Amazon over 20 years ago, (when we still had to hand feed her baby bird food because she wasn't yet weaned) the breeder said to make sure we put the bird in our wills ... we were already 42 & our bird breed typically lives to 65! I love Miss Kitty... noisy, messy, moody, crazy, etc. But also incredibly entertaining with a huge vocabulary & song repertoire (including The Star Spangled Banner, Old McDonald, Lollipop & tunes of her own composition!)
All EXCELLENT points! And glad I took the time to look into those things before I ever got my birds. None of my 3 budgie boys talk, but they definitely find plenty of other ways to show off their unique personalities, and I adore them!
Ok you got 3. I was thinking of getting 2 budgies but then i thought if 1 dies the survivor would feel depressed and grieve. So then i thought 3. But i was worried about space. Do you have 3 separate cages? Did you get them all at the same time? And are they tame/hand raised or do they only like each other and not you?
@@carina9629 I started out with just 2- because I have no other birds and had never owned birds before, the place I got mine from wouldn't sell me just one- I liked that, showed they cared that the bird always had company! So my older two were got at the same time and had been together for a month before I got them, they were fine sharing one large cage. I got them in 2020, and this year I got another young one. I kept the new one in a separate cage for quarantine, and then kept him separate to give all three of them time to get to know each other. Now they're all fine sharing the big cage together, and all come out to fly around and play all together! All of mine are parent-bird raised, so took work to get to trust me. They're all hand-tame and recall trained now, but none of them are cuddly birds! Which is okay by me, we have plenty of contact time in our play and training sessions, and they're the best companions when I'm working from home.
@@carina9629while you’re waiting for an answer, I just got 3 budgies and they’re known for being very social. I’m considering adding a 4th bird as two already seem bonded. They don’t need separate sleeping cages like the big parrots do.
You nailed it. My tortoise would win the lifetime challenge. One pount I wish you had included, I knkw it's not a nice thing but the many dangers to their health that are normal everyday things most people do that most pets aren't as affected by, things we love that we couldn't have anymore like scented candles, incense, and certain cleaners, or household tools like cookware. Birds are a lifestyle change too. But that was a great list.
Adding this to my favorites, so I can easily share with people. Can’t count how many of my friends say, “I would love to have a bird! It sounds so fun!” Yep, it is. Tons of fun! As long as you know what you’re getting into. And HERE is what you’re getting into…..
One thing I'll add to all the great info is how hard it is to find vets and pet sitting for exotics in general, and parrots specifically. Add the expense on top of rarity for those services and ca-ching! More cash departing the wallet.

This is a sad day , “ Mad Max “ the cockatoo passed away last night , we started our journey 3 yrs ago ,it was a rough start in the beginning we’re I rescued him from a flea market we’re he came from a bad person, our friendship grew to new level , he had gotten to were at around seven every evening he would come to me to snuggle and get his pettings , last night was no different he went to his cage and this morning he had passed away without a sound , he will truly be missed , see ya on the other side buddy ! 🫶🏼
I’m a bit late to the fray, but I’d say another thing worth considering is holidays! It’s hard to go on holidays when no one wants to look after your parrots. They can put a real crimp on spontaneous plans to get away for a night or two, but on the plus side, they’re a great excuse for not visiting friends out of town. 😸

Great video as people think birds are easy and cheap to own especially the little guys but wow they are so not 😅and the mess totally agree with you it’s a lot of mess😂 hopefully this helps some parrots not have to go through rehoming. for me it’s so worth the money mess and noise ❤

All fantastic points! I wish they'd stop me from adding to my flock but these noisy and messy things make for the busiest not-alone life that you can imagine!! Who would want to live life alone when you can involve a bastard!!!!!!!
One more: you can do all the research, find the best species for yourself and narrow it down to what you think will be the perfect individual bird for your home. You bring the bird home and it decides it loves your spouse instead of you.
The only thing I would add under the cost category is veterinary care. They need annual vet visits, nail trims, bloodwork, etc. And the costs add up. You should have a savings account for emergency vet care and a designated emergency avian vet.
My husband and I were “willed” our bird Desi. Like literally I’m an only child and my parents retired, bought an RV, moved the bird into our house and waved bye. Hahahaha but we love desi and he has bonded with my husband. Desi is a moody African grey but we love our noise maker!!

I would only add 3 points 1: is that it is very hard to tell when birds are ill because they hide it incredibly well 2: at some point, you will be bitten by your own bird and it will break your heart because it is like your child biting you and you will try so hard not to scream, but if you own a macaw you probably will anyway. And you might have quite the injury. 3: finally, and perhaps, most importantly, it is extremely important to get the type of bird that fits your personality and your lifestyle. They are not solitary creatures they are flock animals, so unless you’re prepared to take your bird everywhere with you, you were going to need a family or children, or other animals around. Also, you may not want a large Macaw but quite often the bigger, the bird, the more low-key the temperament but also the louder and the longer lived. For example, I love African greys - they are so smart you can teach them so many things, and they are generally amazing talkers if you put the work in, but I have anxiety and so do African grays, so I ended up being much better off with my beautiful almost 20 year old Greenwing, Lulu, who speaks in a ‘macaw’ accent and has a variety of words / phrases, but will never come even close to an African gray in terms of conversational ability - but that’s fine because she’s a happy go lucky clown who doesn’t have a self harm panic attack every time I go on vacation and board her at the vets. She loves children. Dancing, and learning tricks , She loves other animals and she generally likes people , she’s nice and chill and the older she gets ( we’ve been together the whole time) the more easy-going she gets and will continue to do so. So people should really spend a good year doing research and visiting different types of parrot.
Jolly talks every now and then, a lot of the time it's when he is alone, or thinks he's alone. The first time he spoke to me, my jaw dropped. He flew to me and said "Good job!" The novelty of him talking has worn off and while I enjoy hearing him sing, he is still messy and destructive and a ton of work. Just a reminder for those thinking of the cute reasons to get a bird.
I would also had the social part and the fact that you cannot mix all species together. Also, some birds have more special needs that can require way more time than others and you don't want to neglect your other birds as well
A lot of reptiles can live a while. My 2 lizards prob won’t be more than 10-15yrs max. Tarantulas can be anywhere from 5-25yrs depending on gender, fun little fact lol. And fish!!! Fish live sooooo long when cared for properly
Plus all the things you have to give up (scents,bleach,cookware... or the expense of going on vacation... and when you get back your bird could be royally pissed & bite/act out you because of it. THEY BITE! You will get bit at some point. Anything not metal they'll chew & destroy (doors, walls, cabinets, clothing, TV, furniture). I love my birds but our of all the animals I've had, they are the most complex & by far the most expensive.
I'm dying to know what the solutino is for peopel who keep birds outside (if even just in the day time) what do they do about bugs, wasps, spiders, etc that may come by? For people who house them outside , what do you do abou thtat or hwat can be done about pests?
My friends still pressure me to get a second bird. My budgie isnt fully tame because hes been super slow to convert to healthy food. Why would I add another bird whos not converted at all and ruin all my progress? They say "Because he's lonely!"

@@yoteb4091 I have tried mashing the pellets to dust and adding water with that and the seeds, and then I week by week crushed them up less and they HAD seemed to start eating them but then they stopped, and now I don’t know where to go from here.
When you experience failure you’ve pushed too hard to fast Try going back to wet pellets and the slowwwwly adding less water If your bird likes one of these ~ sweet potato (cooked whole), hard boiled egg (or scrambled, no seasoning), or pasta (copped up) Mix one of those with the pellet powder and mush it all up the pellet powder will stick (You can use that method will vegetable chop instead of pellets too) What breed bird(s) do you have (best wishes if you have a cockatiel or budgie, you know what I mean if you have one) Nothing is impossible Also try eating the pellets (and make them seem so tasty), or pretend eat them birds live in flocks they’ll try what their flock is trying
hey! I recently just got two budgies and by recently its been a month now and ive watched your videos on taming budgies, and i really am struggling with the taming. they still act scared when i approach the cage but i can get them to take millet from my hand and step on to my finger and eat millet but they still act scared of my hand at first and i cant get them to even try to leave the cage and i feel so bad that they've only known the cage and that doesn't sit right with me as i want them to be able to explore their environment, they are clipped as i got them that way but i was just wondering if you have any tips on how i can make them less scared of me and get training/taming to be a bit more productive?
My cockatiel Piper is normally very quiet but she's been waking me up for the last couple days since she's in the mood to lay eggs again... thankfully this is the first time she's laid eggs in over a year but unfortunately it's starting again. I'm thinking when she was in boarding for a week the lights were on longer than she's used to and that triggered the egg laying.
Tricks to stop chronic egg laying : Let her sit on her infertile eggs ( removing the clutch while "breeding conditions" persist = she will lay a back-up clutch ). Remove the food dish for hours-long moments during the day ( fake scarcity ). Move the cage to a different place ( unreliable nesting spot ). Don't pet her anywhere but the head ( back, shoulder, belly, etc, = sexual stimulation ). Fake long nights with a black drapes cover on her cage ( wrong season ). Remove toys that look like nests ( boxes, drawers, hanging "sleeping tents", etc ). All of these are to remove "breeding season" signals from her environment. One clutch a year isn't a health risk though. If I forgot anything, fell free to add or correct.
Very few birds are cuddly!!! And if they are you shouldn't cuddle them very long at all!! You even have a chance of getting a bird that doesn't care about you all that much. 😂😂😂 I know I'm a bummer but truth!
Two other important things that people need to remember is that first of all that birds fly. Might seem obvious but I've seen so many people on the internet that clip their birds wings because they don't like that the birds fly. If you don't want your bird to fly...get a hamster or something instead. Second thing is that if you have places that you don't want the bird to go to...those will most likely be their favourite spots for some reason. At least that's my experience with my birds lol
Attention hogs. My bird wants to be climbing on me all day. And I have to put down my activities because she’ll chew and destroy - pens, pencils, paintbrushes, paper, yarn projects, rubber on crochet hooks, etc.
@@nataliegraham9552 Yup. Mine broke through an expensive gold chain. She constantly tries to unclasp my watch. She has reset the time on it. She also bites my rings and earrings. I finally grew my hair long enough to cover my neck so she mostly leaves my ears alone. But I can’t wear my medal that I usually never take off. She’s only 6 mos old. I wonder if she’ll calm down. She’s hyperactive.

Weirdly enough, the friend who got me introduced to pet birds had trained hers to poop on command! She'd say "poop!" and her birds would poop. It was hilarious to me at the time, but she'd get them on her finger, give the command over their paper then they would not poop around the house when she had them out.
Yes, pet birds are a huge commitment! I always loved mine though. I am birdless at the moment. But, maybe I will be privileged again to have another bird in my life. 🐦🦜 Gina
