The achar analogy was actually perfect because that's how women were treated in films that were male centric. The heroine was just there to spice things up ,not as an integral part of the story or an integral part of the heros life but just the 'love interest' who entertained him by singing dancing and looking pretty. I love Rani but here she handled it tactlessly by reacting before understanding what he meant.

Regardless of his intention, he was belittling the work that went into the actress' jobs. People have been arguing for better, less stereotypical, and more impactful roles for women for a long time now. He compared actresses in old movies to achaar like they had no importance at all, which was not always true. Plus, by comparing the role to achaar, he was basically insulting the profession and hard work of actresses who work in those films with those scripts. That's like saying a comedy role that is not related to the main plot of the film is papad. The role still exists, the actor still worked hard to bring the role to life, and the actor was paid for the work they did in the film. It may not have been the best role out there, but it was still something that audiences enjoyed. It is the job of actors to entertain audiences as much as it is to raise discussions on social norms and issues, and to compare a role or trope to achaar, especially when it is one of the only tropes where women have had any visibility int he past, is just plain disrespectful.
