Thank you so much I’m aware a lot of knowledge in tattooing is closely guarded so literally every thing I can find is a blessing :,)

You’re video was super helpful! But, I was wondering if you had any advice for using digital art in your portfolio as that’s my primary medium at the moment.

It is ok to have some pieces but you'll find majority of tattoo artists want to see traditional mediums in your portfolio! Don't be afraid to print your line work of your digital drawings and trace them in markers and fineliners and colour with pencils, markers or watercolour! It's a skill you should expand on. In the future though, when you will need to pump out designs for clients as a tattoo artist you'll probably depend on working quick and using ipads and digital mediums to help with that! So keep it around but definitely explore your traditional mediums because that's what a mentor will look for!

Hi, so I did a variety of styles in my portfolio that initially got me an apprenticeship, should I try to master a few styles that I'm most interested in? Thanks. Totally unrelated to the video, you sound like Maia Mitchell.

Hey there, I’m from Melbourne and eventually want to get into tattooing.. but what’s the go with tracing pictures?? Is that frowned upon if majority of your drawings in your portfolio are traced? Good on you for giving tattooing a crack!

Hey Port! It is definitely important to be able to draw free hand, when you're putting designs into your portfolio you would want them to be all original designs. In saying that, it's okay to trace images for practise to know how something is drawn. There's a process I do where I might trace over my design 2 to 3 times before I have it as its final design to ensure it looks good. In saying that, it's freehand drawn. Don't feel intimidated by this though, it's amazing how quick we can get better when we practise. And with drawing it really just is about repetition. That's why I say do a small drawing a day up to an hour. You're practising as well as staying interested in drawing. The biggest thing I found, it was hard to keep going at the start, but I got to the point where I wanted to draw everyday, and when I Don't it feels like I'm wasting valuable time! I hope this information is helpful!

Also a lot of tattoo artists with portraits might trace the faces just to make sure proportions are good. It's a good idea to try this, but I believe it's important to aim to not need this kind of method. The better you are as a drawer, the more beneficial it will be to you!

I’ve been recommended to just show up to a shop with my unfinished portfolio (it contains a bunch of old work that I want to redraw and edit and some work that I had free handed) but I’m not sure if that’s a smart thing to do. I was thinking I can walk in and ask what they would like to see more of and take some advice. Should I keep working on the portfolio or is it okay to show what my progress is looking like? Thank you!

Don't be afraid to go into a shop and ask for feedback! It will also give you an indication of whether they are a studio you are comfortable with and if they are looking for an apprentice! If they suggest what they'd like to see more of and you return with an updated portfolio they will see your determination! Putting yourself out there will just open more doors and help you learn something new! Good luck 💜

Nice video, think that can practise the craft without having any tattoos?
@taylahjadeart
@taylahjadeart 2 года назад
It's definitely a possibility. I don't have any tattoos myself and I know a few artists that don't. There is a mixed culture about having tattoos as an artist, some tattoo studios and artists expect you to practise on yourself which 'shows your clients they can trust you' attitude. But you just have to approach the right kind of studios who understand you as an artist and clients who look to your work and not to whats on your body. Everybody is different, it's okay to find your own way!

@@chan_9000 to me tattoos are a very personal life experience thing to others it's different. It's a possibility one day I'll decided to get a couple but not totally fussed if I don't! Thank you for your comment. I might in the future do a video on how I draw digitally! 😁

Can I ask what you struggled with the most during your apprenticeship?
@taylahjadeart
@taylahjadeart 2 года назад
Hey Madison! At the moment I'm still only about 4 months into my apprenticeship, in Australia we are having a lot of lockdowns so progression has been on hold for a while. The most difficult part for me is communication with customers in regards to booking and knowing how big/long a design will take and then being patient with my progress because it's essentially out of my control and in the hands of my mentor and the pandemic! I'm pretty fortunate in the kind of apprenticeship I have (studio once a week) but I know others to struggle financially because studios want them there full time unpaid. Still a long way to go for myself, the pressure will become real once my mentor let's me on skin I reckon! Thanks for your question, I hope I answered it?
