From a TSO: The AIT (body scanner) don't go by metel, it goes by density. Highly recommend taking off any kinda belt (even plastic ones). They have a chance to still alarm the AIT, and you might get a pat down in the groin area. Also, if you have pants on that are not form fitting (sagy, or bunching) pull them up all the way before putting your hands up in the AIT. This lowers the change of a pat down in the butt area. Liquids is anything that can drip or spread. If you want to bring oversized liquids make sure it's full frozen. It will still be looked at, but full frozen liquids, can go through. If you bring Liquid medicine with you. Make sure you tell the TSO that it is medicine (even if you might think it's obviously medicine). We have different screening processes for medical needs. Please be nice to your TSOs. We are there to protect passengers and make sure nothing harmful gets on the flights. Friendly reminder the people that caused 9-11 took down the planes with box cutters. The shoe bomber is why (almost) everyone takes off their shoes. The failed Liquid bomb attempt is why liquids are a big deal. The underwear Bomber is why we pat people down in the groin area. Some of the rules seems crazy, and most passengers have nothing to hide. Doesn't change the fact that some individuals are waiting for the chance to harm people. Thank you for your time, Safe travels 🙏

Good points. I know people have a problem with security theater (and even genuine security), but the security line isn’t the time to recite your manifesto 😂 I think people forget that when they agree to fly, they *also* agree to all of the security, mask, vaccine, and safety requirements. The number of people I see asking if they “really need to do X” is so frustrating. The rules are there for a reason. You may not like them, but you agreed to follow them. So just do it.

The liquid rules were made up out of whole cloth and have no basis in any threat. Overnight, TSA decided that 12 ounces of hand sanitizer is a-ok. It was too dangerous to contemplate before, but circulate a virus around and suddenly TSA isn't worried about liquid bombs anymore.

Pro tip from me traveling both nationally and internationally, while digital boarding passes are convenient, having a paper backup is a great idea. I learned this the hard way when my phone died and I absolutely needed to show my pass. Thankfully I was able to resolve the issue quickly. Keeping your phone charged may be common sense to some people but with all the stress of traveling, it can be an oversight.

Totally agree with this! As soon as I get to the airport I get to a kiosk and print a paper boarding pass. It’s come clutch when the airlines app went down or the bar code wouldn’t scan.

This just happened to a passenger yesterday. They waited through the whole long line with their child and When they got to the front, for some reason both of their boarding passes were invalid. Came back with paper ones and it was fine. also, better to not print them at home. If the ink smudges your screwed. It won't scan

@@tnr2217 I don't have a smartphone, so I always have to print mine, but since there's no reason for me to waste the time at the airport (unless something comes up and I have to reprint my boarding pass after I get there - has happened a few times), I always print mine at home, but if the barcode were to get smudged when printing (or the printheads decide to not cooperate), I would just reprint it, no big deal. Once printed, I keep mine in a place where it won't get mangled or smudged, so that probably makes a difference, but for people who aren't as careful with them as I am, definitely a good point - I can imagine the annoyance it could cause if it was smudged.

@@andjames As someone whose only option for getting a boarding pass is by printing it (no smartphone), I always print mine the night before when I check in for my flight - saves time the next day, both at home and at the airport, and if the printer doesn't cooperate the first time, I have a chance to fix it and reprint it.

Tip for traveling with someone who has mobility issues. Prearranged transport to & from the airplanes. Ensure you are noted as the companion because you may actually get through security & customs faster. When my father was alive, we made sure he received a wheelchair & escort or with the “go carts” as soon as we got to the airport. He usually walked with a cane but the escort sure did make things easier for him and for us.

And check in at the front desk when you get to the airport, just to make sure that the request is actually on the ticket - there were several times where I requested it but it didn't actually make it onto my ticket, so the person at the check-in counter added it.

I usually keep some painters shoe covers so if I have to take off my shoes, I have something between my socks and the dirty floor. Also some airports will make you remove your shoes even though you are a trusted traveler (DEN as an example). Also Trusted Traveler can save you up to 30 minutes at busier airports (SFO as example). Another tip I’d add is put your bins in the cart at the end. I’ve see countless times where the person on the X-Ray operator has to stop and put the bins at the end slowing down the line. Might be like 15 seconds but someone could be late in that time lol. I’ve also seen airport employees like the airline or vendors do that for people so that their stuff can come through

And sometimes they flag it because they're simply not sure from the image what something is (since things can look very different on x-ray than they do normally), in which case it's a learning opportunity for the officer, too - my best friend is one, and she told me plenty of stories of that happening, where the officer's response once he/she opened the bag was, "Ohhhh, okay, so _that's_ what that looks like on x-ray. I do about 200 flights a year out of a Tortuga Setout 35L and live by a lot of these rules, but here are a couple more worth mentioning... 1.When going through security look ahead at the lines. Avoid families with multiple children (as a dad myself, we just take longer). Follow business travelers we are always in a rush to go nowhere. 2. When going through security, if you have a jacket on, fill the jacket pockets with everything in your pants pockets, Keys, phone, wallet, watch, and even my belt. Then all I have to do is pop off my jacket through the scanner and on the other side grab one item that is carrying 4 or 5. 3. Don't use the end of the scanner line to get re-dressed. Grab your things and find a spot out of the way. Seems basic but part of R E S P E C T. 4. As you mentioned If you do a lot of travel, Clear with TSA pre-check can be a lifesaver. I can breeze through Orlando security in well under 3 minutes. Love the content keep it coming

Found out recently that a stack of books will trigger a search after scan of your luggage. I travel weekly and never had an issue. Needed to take some dead tree books with me on a recent business trip and packed them in my carry on case. The TSA officer said the scanner detected a large block of organic material, hence the search. Frustrating to say the least but then again the only time I have issues is at that airport. Thanks for the info! I am trying to find a good bag to take for my personal item. I was looking at the Aer travel pack 2 but it seems too big for that purpose. Would you recommend the Aer travel pack 2 small or something else for that purpose?

The Aer Travel Pack 2 small is a nice option. Aer also makes a Flight Pack that might be worth checking out. Check it out here: packhacker.com/travel-gear/aer/flight-pack/ - Austin

@@PackHacker Thanks so much! I'll check out the Flight Pack as well. I think maybe the Travel Pack 2 Small has more capacity for me using it as a single bag on budget airlines like Frontier and such as a personal item that can hold a week or two worth of travel things. Thanks for all of your wonderful content!

If you pack a lunch use frozen water bottles as ice packs which are allowed. Just make sure to drink any thawed ice water before going through security.

I do that, too, as well as bring a sponge that I saturate in water, freeze, and put in a ziplock bag. It keeps fruit and cheese snacks cool and cools me off if I get hot.

If you plan to use TSA Pre-check…you might want to reference the websites of the airports you plan to use for the hours that service is available….it’s NOT 24 hours a day! Found this out the hard way….so be aware if you will be making an early A.M. departures!!

For TSA pre-check because per much anybody can sign up for and become so popular it’s definitely not as quick as it used to be before I honestly think they should make another line for people that do have TSA pre-check but also give like a option for like a plus version or platinum or something like that for people that want to pay let’s say $100 extra year that absolutely don’t want to wait and the business people and very very frequent fliers I think that would at least make it feel like it’s worth it again to the people that initially TSA targeted business members and frequent frequent fliers

What backpack is it at 6:36? I would highly appreciate if someone could tell me the brand and type. Thank you. Nice tips. Before Corona I used to travel on a regular basis for business reasons. When waiting in line for security check I emptied all pockets of my pants into the zip pocket of my jacket. I did so as well with watch, wallet, belt and so on. The jacket then was a bit bulky but after running throug the x-ray I just had to pick up my jacket, carry on luggage and shoes to move on. By that I could reorganize my pockets afterwords at a more relaxed place without missing something out.

Is there a way to fresh the water in airport? I am thinking of a water filter, but don't want one that complicated, i.e. used to filter outdoor water for travelling. I just want something small to put inside my water bottle, so when I fill the bottle at the airport, the water tastes nice. Tap water may be safe to drink, but may not taste good. Any suggestions?
