10 Types of Reservist in the Army!

The Army Reserves will always have a special place in my heart. I joined Reserves in ’05 for like 8 months then decided to go Active in ’06 then back to the Reserves in ’11. In the end, anything I have to say here I say it with a dose of love and a throat punch of reality.

You missed the reservist who has deployed 9 times and talks shit on active duty guys. He has all the problems of active duty with even less of the support because he is volunteering to deploy with any unit so he can avoid to face the fact his life is meaningless and directionless.

I laughed so much. Spent 9 years in the reserves, met all these guys. There are some good ones, but let's be honest. Unless your gearing up for deployment, drill is kinda a joke, the AGR does their thing, the senior NCO's do their, and leaves a few e5s and long time e4s to try and make it as productive as possible with zero instruction or training supplies. If your in the reserves now and want to get out of doing some bull shit task, get a note book and walk around the drill hall with it open, walk with a purpose like your looking for someone. Everyone will leave you alone all day.

+Reservist epitome I agree. Don't let the civilian life suck the soul out of you, because it is very possible for that to happen. It almost happened to me, luckily I live a happy life with my wife, my two jobs (for now), and also having the deal of a lifetime: going to school for absolutely free.

Yup I am switching back into active duty asap. I like the Guard and my unit is awsome, but I cannot stand the civilian life. It has been impossible to find a job, I have had to settle for cooking at a casino, and it seems most civilians (not all) are complete morons. The only plus side is I am going to community college payed for by Uncle Sam, but everyone they're is a complete idiot to and I am not studying anything useful lol. I just jhope my commander signs off on the conditional realese.

I was in 3rd ID and I carried my keys on my belt loop. No one even knew they were their until I took them off to open something, I had 4, 1.5 inch key rings on my carabiner each filled with key to all the things I had to have access to. The SGM for the battalion knew I always had it on me, but he also knew that I was the only one that never had to have a lock cut or have to wait for someone from key control to open a door because they lost the key.

Not all reservists are POGs and NO not only does the National Guard have infantry. The US Army Reserve has 1 infantry unit which is the 100th Battalion 442d Infantry. It is the only Infantry unit in the army reserve that wasn't disbanded due to its rich history. Nicknamed the Purple Heart battalion the 100th is the Most decorated unit in the United States armed forces.

Keith Geyer Yep. You can get to 7 and 8 as an 11B in the reserves, but it takes a looong time and it’s highly competitive since there’s like less than 40 or so 7 and 8 11B positions in the entire USAR. The guys I work with spent a good chunk of their careers as 6s like you said.

Not all AGR's are as described. Some spend the remaining 28 days of the month setting up the unit for successful training. It is very challenging to maintain good order and discipline not to mention PT/height and weight standards when you supervise Joe for only 16 Hours a month.

I was in the reserves (Transportation Company) from 1996 to 2002, took a break and went to the Guards (MPs) 2004 to 2010 Started at a 66J but they phased it out and had to re-classed as a 63B My best time was with the Reserves. I remember I had to SUTA one of my Drills which happened to fall on a drill where they did a P.T Test. When I went to make it up, my Motor Sergent takes me out for breakfast, pulls out a PT scorecard and is like, "How many pushups shall we say you did...." During one AT there was some sort of miscommunication about chow. Long Story short - Me along with 12 other soldiers didn't get to the Chow hall before it closed. I figured they'd do a McDonalds run or something or at the very least give us MREs. Nope... the First Sergent takes us all 13 of us to a dine in restaurant. I was on guard duty (AT again) at night and almost dozed off until one of our vehicles came to the gate. Startled I threw my helmet on backwards and ran towards the truck only to run right into concertina wire. I never heard the end of it :) Great times.

Number 15 is so true lol, I've got to the point in my reservist career that I appreciate my reservist service and don't even think about active duty anymore. I'm set, civilian career wise, university, and with the reserves. I think you should add another onto the list (i'm not in the Army, but in the Marine Reserves) and that is the guy who is counting down the days until he finishes his reserve contract mandatory service. Or the guy who shows up with no/crap hair cut. Or the guy who calls his squad leader saying, "cpl/sgt my Marine forgot he had drill today so he woke up late and he's 40 minutes out", or the guy who always is TNPQ/NPQ (injured/not physically qualified) and you wonder how he's still with the unit, or the new join who is super motivated like he's about to deploy tomorrow and still smells like bootcamp chow hall food. LOL, I have so many of them I can go on forever hahaha.

Ha-ha.....very funny list. I left active duty in 1990 after spending 3 years in the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg. Before I ETS'ed, the re-enlistment NCO talked me into joining a local Military Police company to finish out my service obligation time. The first weekend drill I went to, turned out to be a 3-day overnight exercise at a National Guard training base in West Va. (Camp Dawson, if anyone knows of it). On the bus ride down from Pennsylvania, one of the reservists got caught smoking marijuana on a rest stop break. That's when I knew being a weekend warrior wasn't for me.

Coming from Reserves to active, I was told during the whole process by people in my unit, "Yeah, I tried for that but my DD 368 ran out," or "I want to put my packet in for SGT first," or even better like you said, "I probably wouldn't be able to keep up." If you're wanting to go active duty, all it takes is a high GT score or for your MOS to be open for pick ups. Airborne helps and you might have to reclass, but it will definitely be a more rewarding job with more opportunities.

Reserves sucks, you get shit on by your employer when you have to go to drill and then you have to listen to some jerk off on how is better than you because he is active duty. Pretty much you spend the whole weekend being treated like a POS to go back to work Monday morning with a pissed off boss because you are behind on your regular job. No win situation. Oh and that two weeks of vacation you get from your employer every year....take a guess when you have to use it.

#16 Big Ol' E-4.... And I've seen this in every Reserve Unit I've been to. An overweight E-4 who can't pass H/W/Apft to save his life (Or his Battle's), but he is fucking phenomenal at his job, whether mechanic or otherwise (typically mechanic). Has anyone else found this?

The only ones allowed to have a keychain like that are armorers, and most of them won't have that many keys.

Question: What is a has-been-Active-Airman-and-is-now-reservist-sailor-trying-to-get-back-in-active-because-his-previous-commander-went-silent-on-time-of-reenlistment called? I got my reasons, that’s why I asked. 😒
