There is always the best option, where you gained the ability to summon a ghost like entity after getting struck by a special arrow. You also will have to play with the unarmed fighting style.

I played a echo knight when it first came out. I played it as a time traveler from our 1945 . Every time I made a echo I pulled one of me from a alternate timeline. This created time rips and our DM had time cops come after me. It was fun as hell.

You left off the best idea. You're three kobolds in a trench coat and when you summon an echo, it's one of the kobolds leaping out of the coat to fight. And no matter how many echos you have summoned or die, there's still always 3 kobolds in the trench coat...because kobolds

Late, but I recently played an echo knight where his echoes were other versions of himself that had died in the encounter he was summoned in. It was a curse/blessing that ran down his family to live on using their own alternate selves as stepping stones. Fun character, the DM loved using him as foreshadowing.

In one group I'm with, the echo knight was flavoured to be some sort of ghost that our fighter can summon. We called him Ghost Dad due to him giving the party (questionable) fatherly advice, and praising us when we slay our enemies.

I’m playing an echo knight where the character is a kalashtar, he grew up in an enclosed grotto community in the woods where there wasn’t really anyone his age when he was a kid so he didn’t have any friends, so he made an imaginary friend. That imaginary friend through unknown means even to the character somehow came to exist in reality as the characters echo. The echo is a completely sentient being that can think for itself and acts as my characters best friend but will still follow what I tell him to do. He’s a 6 foot tall man (mirroring my characters height) with a bunny head, one wing, and the tail of a lion, all things that a young child might incorporate into their own character drawing, but his eyes are two hollow white circles with a mouth that is always shaped in a creepy crooked smile that looks unsettling. Despite his appearance the echo is really wholesome, he loves ice cream and he won me a stuffed flower at a carnival👍

Shoutout to my Echo Knight/Grave Cleric of Hades in a greek Mythology setting. His Echo was the soul of the dead lover he wanted to revive. And yes, it was just after I played Hades, which directly inspired the character ofc.

The echo knight i made but never used because the campain never got off of the ground: ancester was a hero who helped save multiple realms from merging, as a result he bonded with a being, said being was passed down to the oldest living decendent, until reaching my character, character starts evil and is given a choice: prison time or half as much military time. Over time character would learn the weight of what the ancester had done and slowly turn good to not tarnish the reputation

Imagine an echo knight who was stuck with their ex spouse or significant other's ghost as their echo. I can imagine you flavor them getting hit as their echo purposely making sure they get hit. Would be a funny gag for a one shot. would be an interesting part of the character if they were repairing their relationship slowly. idk

Love the ideas. I actually had the idea to play 3 echo and rest bard. Treating the pc as a non combative bard who creates stories of a "Dark knight" type of character, which is his echo. So, while he isn't the hero, he is accompanied by a mysterious hero who gives him and the group aid.

In an old Magic the Gathering set there was a cult of nightmare summoning pit fighters driven to madness by their magic nightmare powers and the nightmare dreamscape pocket dimensions their summonable nightmares were kept in. I spent a lot of time homebrewing a ranger subclass that summoned nightmares and could manipulate the madness rules/tables in the DMG. Then swarmkeeper and echo knight came out and were both so much better than the 20 page mess I had written up so far. On the plus side I still have about 15 monster stat blocks for nightmares meant to be randomized by rolling on the Krasis mutation tables in Ravnica and the Chimera body part tables in Theros. For the echo knight itself it's insane how much you get from just taking 2 levels of war wizard.

I'd love to see an Echo Knight/Ancestral Guardian multiclass character Where the Ancestors and Echo's are flavoured as alternate universe versions of yourself And you pull a Spider-Man No Way Home/Spiderverse and beat up a villain along side other versions of yourself EDIT: This could get incredibly meta and awesome in a universe hopping/multiversal dnd game Would be cool as heck if you entered the universe of your (echo/ancestor) variants and met them as legitimate NPC's

I like the idea of the Portal, but maybe from a Mirror Dimension. 🪞 The character drops a mirror down or another reflective surface like a polished shield or a body of water and a reflected version comes out. A mirrored one that is a bit off from the original one. Also from anime, Kage Bushi-Ninjutsu. The Shadow Clone technique of a ninja 🥷 is a good idea for an Echo.

Playing a Hexblood feylock with a touch of fighter for Echo knight. As a Hexblood, I was once an elf, and may be a hag, or even an archfey, so my echo can manifest as either me as I am, me was I would have been, or some possible unrealized version of what I might become.

My Echo Knight is a High Elf Reborn who was cursed upon death. Their spirit was split from their body, but still linked to it. It's been a while so the lumbering zombie body has now decayed a bit and is _very_ stupid, and the intelligent ghost is forced to watch it make dumb decisions constantly. However, the ghost _can_ possess the zombie body if it gets _really_ frustrated with it, and can take over during conversations to make it Not Dumb Anymore (and turning the zombie's undead green eyes a bright blue). During combat, the ghost becomes corporeal and resembles the High Elf from before they were killed/cursed, with pristine armor, an unbent sword, and completely intact features. However, the ghost detaching itself from the body to become corporeal weakens its connection to the body, which becomes much more animalistic and rage-fueled in battle now that there's no moral ghost to keep it in check.

Here’s my take on the Echo Knight. The player character is just a lowly grave tender, but after a tragedy wipes the PC’s entire village and the PC then buries them all, the PC takes up a weapon from a particularly powerful Paladin that then acts as a Hexblade patron that can then manifest as the Echo. This sets up an Echo Knight/Hexblade multi class which I feel with this flavor could work out very well. From here you could go really anywhere with your PC and paladin possessor either working together or having conflicts.

My character's "echo" is it's twin that died before birth. The soul of his twin shares his body now. Even as a child it would spook his father when my character would look up to his father but a ghostly face would keep looking and reading in the book on the table. As he ages the "ghost version" could completely detach and now even materialise to fight along side him for short periods and sometimes he manages to swap the ghostly body with the real one.

I'm currently working on making an Echo Knight for a Curse of Strahd campaign. He is a Reborn. His past self was brought to Barovia and died.(I'm letting the DM decide how he died) Since souls are trapped in Barovia, it was reborn X years later. (Also letting DM decide how much time had past) His Echo is a shadowed image of his past self right before his death, but the helmet obstructs the face so he can't tell that it looks like him.

It could be a form of Oneiromancy, which is using dreams as divination, but in DnD could just be Dream magic, where the echo is the souls of dreamers. You yourself could get vague dreams of fighting as an echo, it could even be a large group of oneiromancers that share each others dream echos. Or you could just be tapping into the collective dream world, pulling random dreamers out to use as echos. A crafty DM could expand on it, make the rare NPC comment that they have seen the player somewhere before, but can't quite place it. Or have it be a plot point, with a mischievous fey trying to capitalize on dreamers.

I’ve always taken the Echo Knight as a sort of Fighter/Illusionist Mage combo, where you create magical copies of yourself to aid as an ally. I didn’t know about the whole “alternate realities” thing. I also didn’t realise that it not having a speed means it can technically fly straight up… which is really going to change things! I’m currently playing an EK who’s a one-man-army. He creates these clones of himself and has feats like the Protection fighting style, and a homebrewed feat the DM made called Reactionary Fighter (allows you to do one extra reaction a turn, a number of times up to your proficiency bonus, per long rest) meaning that when he and his echo are back-to-back, it not only stops the enemy getting advantage against them, but they can also impose disadvantage on attacks made against either of them (up to twice a turn) They also surround a single foe and just meat-grinder the enemy through multiple attacks, then move back together to act like a mini Phalanx.

I've always been on the side that there needs to be options to increase reactions! Fantastic
@BYERE

@@TheClericCorner It was completely coincidental that it was made too. She made the feat just because she was messing around with D&D Beyond's creation system, and then I found it when making the character. I thought it was an official feat until she told me otherwise. It's very good on a build that uses a lot of reaction effects, like the Protector fighting style and Shield Master feat, as well as for a Harengon (all of which Geran, my Echo Knight, is lol) He basically acts as a bodyguard for up to 2 people at a time, forcing disadvantage and blocking for allies when they're attacked, and getting to do so twice a turn just works into it all the better!

There's one other possibility here. A Pokemon Trainer, with the Pokemon you're using acting as a reflavor of your weapon type. Does your weapon do slashing damage? Maybe you've got a Scyther or Zangoose. Piercing? It could be a Beedrill or something similar. Bludgeoning could be any number of different Fighting-, Steel-, or Rock-types. Even works with elemental magic weapons.

I definitely like it when folks think out of the box and add some flavor to their RPG’s! So, kudos on your whole theme of these videos to showcase different ways for folks to think creatively when designing their character motifs, backstories and similarly their flavored abilities. Also, ahead of the following wall of text, I just wanted to wish you much continued success with this channel for many more years to come. Now, as a DM and player myself of many RPG’s for close to 40 years I always find it fun to game with those folks who get out of their comfort zone and stop reading the books as only RAW/RAI or sadly for those players who only play a game system to make the best skill monkey just because the mechanics of the system alone allow them to do so. So, when I see content creators such as yourself trying to showcase ways of reflavoring or in essence giving folks hope that the RAW/RAI way is not the only path… well needless to say it brings a smile to this middle-aged man’s face by you giving them hope. Lastly, I’ll just say that I myself am starting to enjoy the D&D game systems again after having nearly a decade of hiatus with the books sitting on the shelf in favor of other RPG systems due to what I felt is the eventual power creep of what D&D can bring to gamers play styles. Now to put this into context let me say that I’m an old school player from as far back as the Chainmail system days, then OG, then AD&D 1st, BECMI, AD&D 2nd, 3.0/3.5, a little of Pathfinder 1st, dismissed the garbage 4th, and I’ll admit that when I first tried 5th edition initially back in 2014 that both myself and the group that I played with had mixed feelings on the game system at first due to obvious game flaw and imbalance issues in the first printing of the 5e players guide which made some classes way superior then others to play. Since then, sadly the groups that I had played with mainly wanted to play other modern or sci-fi RPG’s which don’t get me wrong is still a fun time but part of me has a soft spot for D&D since it was my first game so many years ago. Hence that’s the reason why it had been shelved for so long. Well, I can say with pleasure that I am currently enjoying D&D again (5e specifically) not only as a DM of eight (8) wonderful players in a very comfortably known Forgotten Realms Campaign setting that I’ve rekindled for them over the past few months. But I am also playing as a player again in two other different campaigns with two separate DM’s as well. One of my characters is a Yaun-Ti Pureblood (College of Swords Bard 8) originating from the Vilhon Reach area who is now adventuring on the DM’s home brewed world thanks to a crazed but slightly charming gnome demi-lich who pulled all twelve (12) of the player characters from our homes worlds of origin to fight in his gladiatorial games on a totally different world of unknown origin. It’s been a blast thus far and I’ll say this about this DM’s world, he has put a ton of homework into designing his world, almost rivalling many of the known settings for the finer details that he provides. The other character I have at the moment and by far my slight favorite due to his origin story and just the flavor of the character thus far is a Variant Winged Tiefling (Hexblade Warlock 13, Echo Knight Fighter 3, though admittedly we started as 12th level characters, but the DM has stated he would like us to eventually do an origins story game playthrough in time). This is a much smaller and more personal group as a few of us have played for many decades and the maturity and role playing level definitely over shadow the roll playing, so in retrospect it’s a lot more fun to play. As for my characters personal backstory and theme is that my patron is a mysterious celestial entity himself named Masamune (who is often seen as noble, wise, and patient) from one of the many Domains of Dread. The rough backstory is that this character made a pact with this patron as a 0-level character as his small village was attacked and nearly destroyed and that he not only accepted the patron’s pact to save his village, but at the same time also he had also accepted a dark gift (a home brewed version loosely based off several inside of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft as examples) from a different dark power at the exact same time, this particular dark powers name is Muramasa (who is often seen as arrogant, deceitful, and impatient). Now I’m not going to give a full history lesson on the significance of these two names but I’m sure you can look them up for the flavor text as there is a whole real-world history for these two legendary sword-smith masters who are believed to have competed against each other. Basically, since then the characters warlock abilities have slowly grown in stages of power (to reflect the Hexblade growth in levels), but secretly the power given to him from the dark gifts nature is corrupting the character soul putting both his patron Masamune and his dark power Muramasa at odds. Part of this internal struggle is that at some point in the past the character has plane hopped, eventually finding a way out of the Domain of Dread and into Exandria where he picked up the Echo Knight levels, and then into the Forgotten Realms for the Rise of the Dragon Queen ending. From there we have plane hopped into a yet unnamed realm. So, yeah long story short… the echo itself that is summoned as the manifest echo ability is often a reflection of either Masamune or Muramasa! With pros and cons to each as the patron and dark power via for the characters soul. Anyway, thanks again for the fun videos! Cheers bud! 🍻

I’ve always been interested in playing an echo knight, but wasn’t excited about the theme. It felt too setting specific and I couldn’t get excited about building a character story around it or roleplaying it. The portal knight feels like it would work well in any setting (maybe the ability comes from some sort of artifact fused to the character) and the ghost version of the possessed knight scratches my horror and Shadow of Mordor itches. Thanks for the options!

I have a Warforged Echoknight that does the flying disembodied arm thing for his echo. But my favorite flavor of this subclass is a trio of kobolds born from the same egg. Mechanically they are once creature but they bounce around like tumbling acrobats attacking from multiple positions. They will often fight standing upon each others shoulders when one will suddenly leap off to attack from another angle. With the addition of the Ooze race (forgot the name) from Spelljammer, your echos could be a temporary mitosis (cell division). You could be some sort of weird necromancer fighter that summons skeletons from the ground like the Jason and the Argonauts movie from back in the day. The possibilities really are endless.

My next character is going to be an Ancestral Guardian Barbarian that's gonna dip into Echo Knight to double down on the ancestral protectors vibe. Alot like the possessed, at first it will be the spirits of his ancestors invading his body and fighting through him to relive their glory days, but eventually he learns to work with them and harness their power, and summoning them to fight with him instead of for him.

Came up with an echo night that it’s not a alternate world self but it’s his own soul leaving his body also made him a dhampire and multi classed into undead warlock and flavored his form as dread as more vampiric but his patron was a lich so he could’ve been a ghost a vampire and a lich all at once

I made a barbarian echo knight, that was awesome. I used a pole arm. So I had 40 ft range in front of me. So whenever you used reckless attack you were at a pretty safe distance. Add Polearm master and sentinel and you're keeping them at Bay and punishing them when they close. Then you action surge. You wind up doing lots of attacks. Lots of damage at a safer range

Building off the spiritual weapon idea you could take it in a Final Fantasy 15 direction. Produce another weapon that floats and attacks on its own and just teleport/flash step between the one you're holding to the other. For a echo knight Hexblade Multiclass it could be flavored as a part of your pact of the blade or the accursed specter feature. Maybe it's a jar of goop that when released takes a humanoid form like Luigi's Mansion 3 or abominations from The Owl House. I'm reminded of a traditional ninja technique that involved two or more ninja dressing identically to trick guards or pursuers, so if you're willing to take your character in a more comedic route maybe your echo is an identically dressed sidekick who runs away at the first-time something hits them.

I've made an Echo Knight idea about the echo being a mix of Displacer Beast and Blink Dog abilities my character has learned due to overexposure to the Fey Wilds growing up. It works incredibly well and should honestly be considered the real theme, instead of "unrealized timelines." Also works great with the Fey Touched feat thematically.

I had a Echo Knight Fighter/Necromancer NPC that had an his echo avatar take on the appearance of a skeleton in black robes that hovered from place to place. An idea just came to me. Have the avatar took on the appearance of someone else in the guild. It could be a lost twin of the companion and now attached to the Echo Knight for some reason. Echo Knight Fighter/Warlocks using their patron as their Echo Avatar would always be awesome.

I built a blind master echo knight (thanks nerdarchy) but i changed it up a bit. Drow (blinded in battle) 5 fighter/3 wizard/2 rogue/1 ranger. We were playing out of the abyss and my DM made us all choose races with darkvision from the module. I chose drow. But also chose to be blinded from a patrol gone bad and wandered the underdark for 30 years alone except for his shadow who manifested as a split personality and kept him not only alive but from the brink of madness. Still a little off in the head though. What a fun character

I went with a curse set on two twin Leonin by the God of the Underworld. They left their home in pursuit of a powerful necromantic relic that even humans couldnt use when at war with their leonin ancestors. But when they found it they were cursed by Erebos (God of the Underworld) and forced to share a body. While one was in the material world, the other is in the Underworld and whenever one swapped with the echo, they would swap consciousness as well. (The body would retain the memories of the other so when the other swapped in they'd know what's going on)

I'm playing a shadow sorcerer echo knight multiclass built a bit inspired by bladsingers, and I since we are playing Call of the Neatherdeep I decided to go ham in the crit role universe, so my echo knight is the twisted result of a necromancer who tried to modify the consicution of the Luxon beacon to serve his goal of immortality. I have been playing a Human Variant Undead Warlock pack of blade and have then Living shadow Dark Gift trait who I made into the spirit of a twin who died in my place. My patron is my distant grandfather Da'John Vue the first Lord Vue his curse is that he is a lich that keeps taking over the bodies of every other generation. It is a French Domain of Dread and he is the myth behind the felling of deja vu because every new lord Vue feels the same. But the twins are Ra'John and Da'John. After the attempt of his ancestor to take over his body he found the bond could work both ways letting him take the Dread form using some of the Undead power left behind. This would be a great 3 level splash to get some more blade skills.

Yes! Echo Knights are my favorite. My favorite one I've made so far is reflavoring the Echo into a Dancing Sword, I really like floating weapons. Other ones I've come up with is reflavoring it to summon an ancient skeleton that breaks down in one hit, a Kalashtar summoning their Quori spirit into battle, and their imaginary friend appearing to help them in battle.

When I get the chance to play an Echo Knight it's gonna be a dude (havent decided on race or anything, just concept) that can create a carbon copy of himself out of dirt, snow, sand, dust, whatever is in the vicinity, and when teleporting between them, his form will be replaced by whatever material he created it from. Now that I think about it, it reminds me of Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat. Oh well, he's kinda cool.
