In this video I answer the question, "What vegetables can I plant in March?" with my top 10 choices for vegetables to sow in march. Whether you sow these cool season and warm season vegetables indoors or outdoors depends on when your average last frost date is for your area. I'll show you how to find your last frost date and how to use it to know when to plant your vegetables.

We have had such goofy weather up here in WI, I planted some broccoli seedlings in wall of waters and carrots in a cold frame yesterday. Our ground is always still frozen until the end of March. I laid some clear plastic about a week ago on the soil to break the frost, then waited until the soil temp was 40F in the mornings, so far so good. Stay Well!!!

I'm in South Central Ontario (zone 5) and can't wait for tomatoes. I usually grow 17 varieties, but moved last year (partially selecting a house with a good back yard for establishing veg beds) and found out the neighbour has a massive black walnut tree so.....I'll be cutting back on varieties and growing in pots only, until I can figure out a better option. also looking forward to some big, fat bean pods a family member gave me last fall to plant. Always exciting to plant something new. And also something old! It's so much fun! Thanks for brightening up another Sunday.

Share the same black walnut/juglone issue. Luckily I do have a patch on the other side of my house (facing south) in which have been successful with my veggies. I expanded my garden space on the side with the black walnut three years ago but have lost every crop I tried. Still researching but not looking very hopeful. The new plant looking forward to having fun with is some loofah seeds a friend gave me.

I'm in Schertz TX and have onions, potatoes, strawberries (3rd yr) and lettuce growing outdoors now. In my small greenhouse I have multiple tomato varieties, yellow squash, zucchini, bell peppers, jalapenos and other hot & mild peppers, pole beans - all in solo cups. My spearmint, peppermint, sweet mint and lemon balm in large pots all made it through our very mild winter as well as parsley and oregano. I started 3 years ago with just pots and 4 small raised beds now have added 2 (approx) 10 X 20 beds. I don;t know how anyone who works full time can have large gardens - fortunately I was able to retire last March so enjoying the challenge. Thank you so much for your guidance and I love your book.

My last frost date was way back on Jan 19th, so I've already got 8" peppers and 5" tomatoes under lights. I'm thinking of taking advantage of a rainy week to put the tomatoes outside to harden off. I'm waiting a bit on the cukes, zukes, beans, and melons since those should go into the ground directly. 💚

I can't picture what it looks like. Love your show. I've been inadvertantly planting some the things to attract beneficial insects all these years. Now that I know about more about all the other different ones, I can plant more. I don't use any chemicals in my garden. For the last two years I have been also now using organic fertilizers. With the showing of the bean/pea tripod trellising of the vines - you can maximize both the plant numbers in the same square footage, but also have double growing area (John-vertical-and-horizontal growing method). Instead of using a tipi or tripod of sticks put together, or a tomato conical wire cage ... DIY and make a large-tall "high chair" of a growing tower. Multiple legs, not just 4. As you have a high chair, you have the additional higher grow area for smaller rooted vegs (lettuce, radish etc), while you use the multiple high chair legs for the vines to cling and climb upward. One can also grow cold weather, or shade loving vegs inside and under the high chair table, while the vines grow up the legs. One design I made for a person, could have grown an intense and immense amount of vined vegs on the legs (tomatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, cucumbers, armenian cucumbers, british cucumblers, kiwi fruits, thornless raspberry/blackberry canes (kept in check by strong prunings), tree kale, treel collards, beans, peas, nasturtiums, tomatoes, .... In between the legs and these vined plants one plants a massive assortment of other crops vegs. On the back side (north side) one can grow the tall vegs between the vine vegs, ... corn, artichokes, sunchokes, giant amaranth, mustard, broccoli, broccolini, chinese broccolli, rabe, cauliflower, .... In the front (south, west, and east sides) on can plant the sun-loving vegs and root crops (potatoes, cabbage, kale, carrots, beets, mangels, parsnips, salsify, turnips, rutabagas, .... If one truly wanted to grow higher horizontal-located viney plants in a raised table bed on the high chair/high table, then so much more the better !!!! Sweet potatoes, potatoes, yams, pumpkin vines, gourd, winter/summer squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, persian, honey dew, cucumbers, tomatoes, ... all these can be grown above, with drop down vines that lay their fruit at the ground level, while keeping all the vines away from the garden soil (soil blight, soil bugs, ...) and vine clutter on the ground. Using the vertical-and-horizontal growing method, one can grow nearly 2x the produce in the same flatlander gardening space. What was a 10x10 (100 square ft garden), one can have nearly 200 square ft garden and production out of this world. Dont be a flatlander ! Use the space God gaves you on the ground - but also upward in the air ! One could even have an outdoor 2-3 story air garden of all the smaller veg plants, while the bigger plants need the vertical and horizontal space for production. Nver leave 2D good ground and good 3D air sapce to waste !

I'm in N. London. Our last frost date is 21 March. I have a very small back garden. I've begun my tomatoes, peppers, chilis, lettuce, spinach, onions, spring onions, coriander, chard, carrots, radish, beets and peas. I still have to start up cucumbers, courgettes and some sort of squash (haven't decided which yet).

I'm in Idaho, with a LFD of 5/10. So it's going to be a couple weeks before I start anything other than my onions. Definitely looking forward to some tomatoes, and both bell and shishito peppers this year.

You just energized me to get going. Thanks! I'm in NY but start early with hoop covered raised beds. Any tip for removing poison oak?

I’ve heard about Blue Hubbard and got seeds this year because we were absolutely overrun with pests last year. I did not know about starting them a month early, so thanks for that tip! Also, when kept under plastic cover Swiss chard lasted all winter in my zone 6 garden.

Another trick is to grow squash late if you're in a warm zone. Last year I planted zucchini and Delicata mid to late summer (after squash pests had probably gone) and they worked great.

@@hyacinthABC I’m in zone 6 so it might not work as well. There were so many squash bugs and then cucumber beetles up til frost that even with multiple rounds of planting, I only got a few plants and a few fruit. It was unlike anything we’ve experienced before. Just terrible and very disappointing. I sure hope this year is better.

@Ni-dk7ni I’ll give it a try, thanks. Hard to do with the bushier style plants but we’ll see… it was rough last year…

@@emkn1479 I'm so sorry to hear that! I think Brian has videos about fighting both of those pests.

Hello, I live in the heat of Phoenix, AZ. Going to try once again tomatoes. It was brutal last summer with the heat of the temp up to 118. I am adventuring out a little this year. I am planting Rainbow Bell Peppers and Golden Peppers. Blackberry. Cauliflower and Carrots. This is my second year so I am trying to expand my confidence with your help from your videos I know I'll succeed.

The only way I was successful last year with tomatoes during the intense heat was 40% shade cloth all summer long. It was a game changer in my success.

I'm in N. Alabama and ready to get my grow on. Doing a few different melons, summer squash, pumpkins, onions, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, okra, cabbage, peppers, beans and peas o'plenty. Will see what comes of my asparagus planted last year. I just threw some in, so not many hopes spared. Typically, that's what grows best. Lol I do A LOT of research, but retention and application isn't so great. I do a lot of winging it in the end but trying to do better. Ha! I do know I need to add a drip system on a timer. I'm fabulous at the over/under watering dilemma.
