I think a big problem with Saint's Row is that it did try to "evolve" to appease "modern audiences" e.g. people who weren't playing the Saint's games anyways, but would create a controversy if they heard about something in the game they could be offended about.

I don’t know about complaining about starfield before it comes out. Especially about the features it doesn’t have. I’d like to believe that, from what I’ve seen of the game so far, being able to manually land on a planet is pretty unnecessary for the game they’re making, and I’d rather they focus on bug fixes than figuring out how to fly through an empty sky. The procedurally generated planets are a step forward, too, in my opinion, and I really want to see how it turns out before passing judgement.

Yep. Another classic example of Jules not knowing the game he talks about, or at least the scriptwriter not knowing the games they write about. Dismissing Stranger of Paradise as he did here clearly showed he didn't play. The reason why Jack doesn't say much and is a bit of an ass is explained much later towards the end, where the big reveal takes place. When I saw Stranger of Paradise at number one, I knew this was going to be a garbage take.

The "silent Mc because it's supposed to be you" trope is so overused and not at all effective. I feel way more immersed in games where the Mc talks and lets you choose answers that you would give rather than just stay silent and give written answers to npcs.
I understand where you're coming from with this list Jules, but I think it's totally unfair to include Starfield on the list since it's not out yet. It might actually be better than the tidbits we saw from it so far ((Or far worse)), but it shouldn't be on this list until after it's out in all fairness at least.
This video is a miss. Most of the stuff you complained about with Starfield are things people have been asking Bethesda to go back to for ages. Having a voiced protagonist balloons the work needed to make truly branching and meaningful dialogue trees, which results in the worst 'fake paths' issues of Mass Effect where all conversations have to converge back to the same end no matter what, etc. Also god forbid a game have enough content in it's planets that it requires a loading screen, vs the seamless transition games that have a total of 3 trees and a bird on them.
The majority of the 1000 planets will likely be completely optional content and presumably mostly for base building. I don't know why people are moaning about it. Transitions to planets is perfectly fine too. No Man's Sky is a completely different game, as is Elite Dangerous. My understanding is Starfield is more of an on-foot RPG with space stuff in it. I don't expect the ship stuff to be as important as the on-foot stuff, even though you can build your own ships. And yes, the dialogue is going back to a Morrowind style and that's what people asked for. Starfield will be massive in size and scope. People are moaning for moaning sake because they want to trash Bethesda.

@@zuluciushat8764 It conceivably could be less janky because of Microsoft's money and influence. I'd also hope the delay has allowed them to sort any issues out it may have had. I'm optimistic but won't be buying day-one. I'll probably wait a while, maybe even post-DLC and a sale. I don't buy new games very often and at £70+ now, they're really expensive.
@@TheNickeling Yep. Base building and modding. I'm sure some of them maybe tied into side quests (although it wouldn't surprise me if encounters are randomised) but I suspect many to be barren. Although it also wouldn't surprise me if Bethesda snuck some easter eggs in for folk to find. I'm sure all 1000 planets will get visited and thoroughly explored fairly quickly by the community. I'd give it a month. I do see a lot of folk moaning about the 1000+ planets though, as if they have to visit all of them, or something. I've visited and landed on way more than 1000 planets in Elite Dangerous (admittedly I've not explored every one). It's not that many really.

Hold on...when describing Starfield, the ONLY game on this list that has yet to come out, you use Dying Light 2 as an example of, and I quote "...how having voiced protagonists can be done well..." yet later when mentioning Dying Light 2 on a list of games painfully behind the times, you say it contains "...poor voice acting and writing..." & "...in the case of the protagonist Aiden, just plain dull." The only thing I have against Aiden is that the dumbsh*t gets sucker punched everytime to create space to fight a human. Like dodge, dip, dive, duck or f*cking dodge for crying out loud lol that killed the little interest I had in the game
I personally blame whoever wrote the script for this one We know Bethesda games aren't the best but people were happy the main character dialogue was stripped out of 76 and then brought back tk a more traditional way based in stats and such That's about all I can praise for 76, it at least went back back a tried and true method. So that being a negative feels odd

Yeeeeeah... imma give Starfield the benefit of the doubt until I've actually played it myself. I said the same thing before Fallout 76 came out, but I'm also old enough to remember being an angry kid ranting to my friends about how Bethesda's Fallout-themed Morrowind mod was going to ruin my favorite isometric RPG franchise... And I ended up having to eat those words. Hell, even if it really is just a next-gen Skyrim-in-space, that still sounds like something I'd want to play.
maybe i am weird but i actually enjoyed Rage 2 and seing it getting supported with repeating events for 2 years was also nice so if you bought it on lauch or claimed it for free via epic there was still time to experience the same be it Gang wars events,Sandwormevents...
Honestly, Rage 2 was way better than I ever expected it to be. It was fun as hell. I had no expectations though because I don't watch trailers or follow hype.
It was okay at best for me the world was much better an the bandit camps etc all the side content was alright even though a little bit tedious at times but what done it for me was that i waited ages for this sequel for it to be 11-12 missions long an the story just weren’t it I feel the first game had a much better story even though both games weren’t even the best out there anyway lol
Something you failed to recognise about Stranger of paradise is that it is a massively gameplay focused experience, being a souls like and all. Having completed the game I can tell u that when it comes to combat its layered, unique, well crafted and most definitely not behind the times. And if you didn’t like the characters and story, fair enough that’s your opinion, but I don’t think that’s the general consensus and its most certainly not justification for calling it behind the times. Also several valid points about starfield but a bit early for absolutes don’t u think.
Now, I'll be up front, I don't usually care for Jules' review/presentation style, but that aside, how can you criticize a game for saying it uses cutscenes and found objects to move the story forward? I mean, that's what cutscenes are for, unless I've been misunderstanding games since 1996, and the found objects telling stories has been a staple in Souls-likes since the genre existed.

Wait a second, you used Dying Light 2 as an example of a voiced protagonist done well, then a few clips later said it was dull? New Vegas is the best Fallout game, and P4P one of the best RPG's ever made. A silent protag let us role play it, sucking us in further. Starfield is doing the right thing here. I never played a female in Cyberpunk, but I didn't care for male V's voice.

I'm a Dying Light fangirl and while I DID and still DO enjoy DL2, it 100% was a fair few steps back. Especially the night time which that alone feels like an absolute sin The night felt special; in the day, you're the hunter. At night you're the hunted. That was the mantra in the first and it sucks that it feels like it's just a slightly more tedious day time Not to mention the upgrading is a hassle. I don't mind it but thats partially due to having put in over 500 hrs into the first before losing my save files Tldr: Dying Light 2 coulda been something much more. It's a good enough 7/10 but that feels so disheartening
Ok, i can understand point against having a silent protagonist in Starfield unlike Cyberpunk or Witcher, but here's the thing, those are 2 different styles of writing. Cyberpunk and Witcher are more of a direct stories that revolve around their respective characters going through directed stories. Story of the character you play is the main force pushing you forward. In Bethesda games however, *YOU* are the character. You create a story revolving around you with plethora of choices to choose from. Story is not so integral to the experience and it's nothing more but a background to your tale. And lack of voice behind the player's character makes it more like YOU are speaking with NPCs
Every Blizzard, Bethesda, Nintendo, and Firaxis game is behind the technology curve, but doesn't stop them from being extremely successful and popular.
Firaxis at least has some decent present games behind it. The Xcom series has been an overall reliable and replayable experience, save declassified. I mean its an absolute maste- *Misses 99% shot* BULLS-
The only problem I had with Frontiers, is the last two boss fights, like seriously, at least make the 4th Titan actually the strongest one and the true boss... come on man x.x, other than that it was an amazing game, as for Scarlet and Violet, I ran into... zero problems, you know aside from the framerate drops and the load up of background stuff, it was relatively great and the story was great as well (since I payed attention to it lol)

@@IamDaBlitz64 Previous games sometimes included special events for exploring throughout the towns and entering buildings. S&V has such large towns with multiple buildings that not even being able to interact with them is weird. They even have multiple shops you can't even enter, limited to pasting the menu for what you can buy along with shops and pokemon centers as metro stations. With what they did to towns, they should have just stuck to old school small towns and cities with just a few buildings
Surprised not to find Shenmue 3 on this list. 18 year wait for a game that felt 18 years old when it dropped. Made hilarious by the fact that, ad interim, Suzuki's old team at SEGA started, concluded, and *rebooted* the Yakuza series. So in the space between Shenmue 2 and Shenmue 3, we got 7 games (not counting remakes/spinoffs) worth of "Shenmue done right", and Suzuki never even noticed.
I don't like how people refer to Yakuza as "Shenmue done right". These are very different franchises with very different fundementals. Shenmue is a more laid back and personal experience, while Yakuza is more hectic and bombastic.
@@Nov-5062 Shenmue is basically an 80's Kung Fu Drama themed Open World Point and Click Adventure where you occasionally need to Use "Knee" on "Punk's Face." Yakuza is a Godfather-style Open World 3D Arcade Beat 'Em Up, where all of the characters are on all of the drugs all of the time (in a good way).
@@asteriondeltoro124 calling Shenmue boring is kinda underestimating its values. The game's "slower" moments are some of my favorite. Walking around in a happy little neighborhood, chatting with a friendly homeless man and buying him a drink, coming back home to call your friend on the telephone, it's all very relaxing and innocent.
I actually really enjoyed Sonic Frontiers…. Then again that’s the first sonic game I’ve played since the classic originals (Sonic 1,2,3) so I didn’t have to go through the pain of the critically bashed previous titles, so was an enjoyable fresh experience for myself.
I have a major title that you missed. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. The main game was enjoyable, but it had issues. The first being it had a much lower level cap than Borderlands, which it was based on. The 4 Bordelands titles (the pre-sequel is not a numbered title), all had level caps at 50, with the DLC packs raising it. Wonderlands capped at 40, which could be reached before the final boss. The 4 DLC packs were very short, meaning they gave less than 3 hours of additional content combined. They also did not increase the level cap. The other issue is no New Game Plus, or True Vault Hunter mode. Again, the other titles had some form of this, but it was scrapped for the abysmal Chaos Chamber.
I know Chaos sounds like a dumb name, but if this is meant to be a prequel to Final Fantasy, then it is on the nose. Chaos was the name of the final boss of Final Fantasy on NES.
No voice protagonist in star field is a GREAT call! I know they work in other games but this is BETHESDA the RPG people a voice hurts more than helps in there games. And that’s not to mention mods!!! Do you know how much harder it is to make epic quest mods with a voiced protagonist? I assume not because if you did this game would not be on the list for your stated reason. While I agree and I do with your point let’s not forget that as it hasn’t come out yet we don’t know if it will be good or not even with the art. Also I mean good looking is up to every person as I don’t like elden ring aesthetic at all but it’s not bad, I think the main problem is people acting like any game is the best thing ever. Sadly over hyping a game can ruin the experience like it did for me with the entire souls franchise. I love bloodborne and sekiro but souls was just so hyped that when I played it I was like meh.
I find it funny how in the same video they say that dying light 2 did voiced protagonists well when talking about Starfields lack of the feature, but then saying the voice acting in dying light 2 was awkward, poorly written and dull when talking about the game itself 😂😂
Out of the few things Starfield does well is having no VA for the protagonist, having voicelines limits possibilities Cyberpunk has this problem, it’s insane that people don’t want to read. Also we should wait for it to come out before ripping into it.
I am torn about protagonists in games like Starfield, some games I wish they had put one in like Metro Exodus I am playing now and others I like them just fine without one.

I like having more options when it comes to my character and what he can say and that is better with text, but if I’m playing as a preset character who I can’t control what he says period yea he or she needs to be voiced.

Exactly! Came here to say the same thing! Jules whole critique of Stafield was based on past games and assumptions. It was a whole word salad about how Starfield COULD be bad because of FO76 and Wolfenstein Young Bloods. Then he brings up glitches and "poor" gunplay (looked fine to me) in PREVIEW copies. That's why they're preview copies! Not to say Bethesda doesn't have some jank in their games but you can't judge something before it comes out!

While I can't speak for Starfield as a whole (most points you raised were valid) I cannot agree with the unvoiced protagonist being on this list. I prefer games that go this route, it allows for far more diverse and accurate dialogue and doesn't distract from your version of the character in your minds eye.
I enjoyed both Saints Row and Stranger Of Paradise. Not every game has to break the mould in every area. For me both games were just fun and entertaining and sometimes that's enough.
I really want to check out strangers of paradise it took me forever to find a review that didn't just make of chaos and move on. Seemed really unfair to the game because the people who don't mention chaos or just go yeah they say it alot but w/e. They made good reviews that made me want to play it.

I think people have a hard time remembering the plot for the first Final Fantasy is simplistic because it's a game that originally released in the 80s and was also one of the first of its kind. Intricate story lines didn't start until the 4th game and have evolved over time with every new release. Also; it's Team Ninja. They're not known for turn based RPGs. They're known for really great action games. Which it is. The mechanics might not be as nuanced as Ninja Gaiden but it works in the confines of the game and I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. If you live in the UK I managed to get my copy for £20 from Asda.
@@DarthPhillius It wasn't the first of it's kind at anything Ultima which was the main inspration for both FF and Dq was on its 4 game at the time FF came out and DQ was on it's 2 and as far as console rpg go we had a few on console to before FF came out like Ultima exodus in 83 for example FF1 was not one of the first of anything hell it wasn't even a third place contender
stranger of paradise shouldn't have been on this list as it's quite good for what it is, the only down part (SPOILERS AHEAD) is that you don't get Garlands actual armor not even in the DLC where the cutscene shows you with it on and then suddenly it's gone........ i wanna play the game with that armor damn it

This seems like an attack on Starfield. The game hasn’t been out yet and you’re already saying it’s outdated without knowing anything about it. Bethesda may not have a clean record, but they’ve made amazing games. And consider as well that this is the 1st game they’ll be developing with Microsoft backing them up.
I expect it to be like all Bethesda games: a bug-ridden mess that's worth playing anyway, and that will be awesome in 5 years once you've added 200 mods on to it to fix the bugs and improve the graphics and the leveling. But to criticize it before it's even come out shows that they're determined not to like it, however it turns out to be. As for the voiced protagonist complaint, what a weird attack to launch. First they compare it to Dying Light 2 and Cyberpunk, which are hardly the most loved games in the world, and second, they ignore hugely popular games such as Elden Ring, which also had silent protagonists. (No doubt there'll eventually be a mod to add voice for the main character anyway ;)

I just commented basically the same. They tried to change the game to appease people who aren't playing it anyways, but will throw a fit if they hear about something they can be offended about. And they're always looking for something to be offended about.
I will infinitely prefer the old school fallout silent protagonist to the fallout 4 version. Mass effect did the dialogue wheel best, but I'll always prefer knowing exactly what I'm saying. I don't need my protagonist wasting my time repeating what I've already decided to say
Thank you! I liked Gotham Knights. Is it perfect? No. But because of all these lists I expected it to be absolute trash. And it’s not. It’s its own little adventure and great for anyone who loves the BatFam and wanted more screen time for them. There are plenty of trash games out there. Just because one doesn’t live up to the hype or previous games with similar titles, that doesn’t make it necessarily bad.
Haven't tried Gotham knights yet but i felt the same about Saints row. Have been a fan since the original. Its not necessarily the best in the series but i still enjoyed it so i dont think it needs to be put down as hard as it does in so many lists. (Same for mass effect andromeda. Perfectly good game now)
I find it funny that you complain about reused bosses in Gotham Knights but make no comment about Elden Ring doing the same thing but worse. You complain about silent protagonists in one game but again give Elden Ring a pass. I'm sorry but it's amazing to me how many people sing the praises of Elden Ring while ignoring the extremely major flaws in the game, that no amount of "Getting Good" is going to fix. But anyone that complains about Elden Ring is just drowned by people yelling about how they don't like the difficulty. I like the difficult in combat, what I don't like is quest givers giving me a quest to meet them somewhere but not telling me where that somewhere is.

I'll agree with you on a lot of these games. But I think it is silly to criticize and say a game will fail with only previews and never having played it. Seein how Starfield is not even out. And from the comments about it here and what others are saying it seems to me people want it to fail. And no matter how good it is it will get panned. Why? because with modern gamers it will never be good enough. Most need to thrown on a deserted island with a few Apple IIs or C64s or 128s power to run them and copies of Wizardry 1 for a year or two to know just how good they have it. I bought Wizardry 1 the day it came out. If it is a game I really want to play and like if it has bugs etc, like Cyberpunk 2077 or NMS I can happily put it aside till they are worked out and play any number of games I have till it does. And look low and behold both those games are gems now ( yeah I can hear it now " no they are not, x,y,z is wrong with them, ). No game is perfect quit whining put on your big boy/girl pants have some patience and do something else till the game is what it is supposed to be ( in a reasonable time that it is.) But some people just want to see the world burn.
That's an ok list but I think you have some points backwards. I would argue that any game without over priced micro transactions and loot boxes are behind the times, any game that works properly when you buy it is behind the times and any game with more gameplay than cut scenes is behind the times.
I can get the gripe around Chaos (ignoring, of course, the fact that this is the name that was used in the original game - come on WC, do your research) because yeah, it's so basic and generic. But what exactly did you expect? Considering how much praise you lump onto Elden Ring, have you ever stopped to think about how ridiculous the names of their bosses are? There's a very good reason Oxbox had a round on their quiz around "Elden Ring boss or black metal band", because half of them are so edgelord it is embarrassing. At least Chaos is to the point.
And with that Oxbox episode it was clear that Mike had barely played the game, as he couldn't remember some of the more well known Elden Ring bosses. Even I knew most of them and I've not even played the game.
A good sequel would be "Game mechanics that became trend setters". Game mechanics so good that they were adopted as standard interface techniques from then on; Every time I get a bulk move option on my inventory, I'm happy. Ever get to a task where you need to haul a lot of loot from one place to the next? Being able to dump your bag and fill it up easily is essential if you do anything like a heavy loot mechanic or if you play a base creation game and relocation is part of your game strategy. Another good example of a trend setting game mechanic is "Fog of War".
Isn't it unfair to criticise a game for having a feature fans asked for? People didn't like Fallout 4 having a voiced protagonist because it's limiting, so Bethesda listened. Not every game has to have a voiced protagonist. Are you also going to say Baldur's Gate 3 is behind the times for having a mute protagonist?
6:49 Right there, the outdated thingie that could be adressed immeadiately for modern time gaming, that we gamers arent all young and with too much time to waste.
This is my single biggest hurdle with modern gaming and why I've stuck with retro and/or handheld gaming. I only play games in short periods of relaxation or when I'm travelling on public transport. Games that require a massive time investment from the player - particularly ones that don't start to get any good until patiently pouring many hours into it - are ultimately a massive turn off for me. I have so many important or entertaining things already vying for my attention, why should I play something with so little respect for my time? That and I just lose my place in a lot of games if I'm dipping in and out only playing 30 minutes at a time.
I'm actually willing to give sonic a pass here because to me it's clear what the project is, the team trying literally everything they can think of in order to see what works for sonic. it looks like they actually had some really good ideas. like Sonic's "lasso ability" and some 2D levels to change up pacing, how ever things like the crazy amount of collectables is definitely not a thing that should come back. if the team analyze this properly Sonic could have quite a good game in the works very shortly, and this is something more devs should at least consider doing. From experience I can say you never know what a fanbase will like till you try it, and putting something this experimental out is a great way to see what ideas people are interested in.

I didn't have any of those issues while playing Frontiers. Honestly, it's been the best 3D Sonic game since the Adventure series. And even then, the only reason it doesn't surpass them is because they'll never be a Chao raising mechanic ever again...
Stranger of Paradise isn't behind the times lol. it was designed specifically like that, it was never meant to be anything more. also FF1's main villain was named Chaos, so the name isn't a problem either
Why all the hate on Scarlet and Violet?! The games aren't that bad! I haven't had ANY of those issues mentioned! Yeah, I haven't played online yet(don't have the money to play online), but still! The games are plenty fun, and don't really feel rushed. The only issues I ever had with the games are the occasional crash or a freeze
The weird bit about Starfield felt off. Is every game with loading screens now behind the curve? And voiceless protagonists are key to Bethesda RPGs because they're whoever we want them to be, not characters like V.
So a game that isn't out is outdated and your mad that a story in games is told through cutscenes or items found in world. Two questions. Have you or anyone on the payroll ever played any FF games since ps1 and how is it that every FromSoftware game is high praise when that game literally only tells its story by item description. This channel is just....the word bad doesn't really describe this channel over the last year or two. Hope Jules finds a good channel for his God given talent
Saints Row. They could have gone back and completely remade the first game. Tweaked the story, so it flowed better, got back in the voice actors from later entries and updated the graphics, gameplay and UI. With the same type of absurdist humour that the games had SR2 onwards. Then slowly ramped up the silliness with each sequel. That was the charm of the original franchise. They didn't try to "evolve" the franchise, or improve anything janky from the old games, but instead removed anything and everything from it they deemed "problematic" and instead replaced it with things that would be "acceptable" for nutters on Twitter. Then made something completely new, with very little in common with the original games and kept the name for marketing purposes. They basically removed the fun.
The biggest most common immersion breaking part of video games is clipping. Hit detection and collision should have been ironed out by the PS2 generation. We need to stop letting devs get away with this crap. Nothing takes me out of a game quicker than swinging a sword right through an enemy, in a way that should cleave them in half, only to see their health gauge go down a bit. I was going to include a time stamp, but just about any clip from this video demonstrates solid objects passing through each other. That's how bad the problem has gotten.
Behind the times.... that shouldn't mean just a bad game.... what culture just makes click this lists now. Halo infinite wasn't behind the times, it was just a bad game with no content.
Starfield isn't even out. You base this opinion on 15 mins of clipped game play and interviews. Half the points are based on preference and comparison. Let's wait till it's actually out to dig the grave.
New video idea: 10 games that require much more time than the game can keep you occupied to complete it or get an item. For example, Anthem's champion of Tarsis challenge requires 50k faction reputation in each faction to complete it. Reputation is gained by playing missions. The rewards from the challenge are inferior blueprints to items you may pick up along the way and a gold color option for your character. For reference, after playing all of the story and optional content in the game, you will most likely have less than 1k reputation in each faction.

complains starfield wont have a voiced protagonist like dying light 2, then complains the voice acting sucks in dying light 2. also, the problem with a voiced protagonist in a "play your way" rpg is that it limits your dialouge options to choose from as they arent going to write 6+ choices for the actor to read out at every decision. and it breaks immersion when your character doesn't sound like you want them to
