My favourite way to die on inline skates is jumping over obstacles but not committing xD
@arictrodriguez9584
@arictrodriguez9584 5 лет назад
no kidding. theres something counterintuitive about jumping on skates. you know that you cant bail, but you feel the normal apprehension of doing something intimidating. it takes a long time to learn that overjumping whatever you need to is better than the alternative

Skating into a just opened car door. Once I almost biked into a truck door like that. Avoided by few cm. Since then I always assume that cars standing along the road contain an idiot that will open that door without looking first.

Had the exact same thing happen, I've stopped and told the guy that I was thinking about stopping by extending one leg forward and "kicking" into his car door (like that lil trick mushroom guys do with fences) but fortunately I know how to stop quickly. Not sure if he's gonna check next time, but just the look on his face was worth it.

My girlfriend recently discovered, to her horror, that I skate on the street and only rarely on sidewalks. I told her "you're picturing me weaving through busy traffic like Bill Stoppard." Truth is, the sidewalk can be very dangerous. A lot of blindspots, cracks, random cars pulling out of nowhere. In general I feel I'm pretty safe on the road so long as I maintain awareness at all times.

"If you can't skate up it, don't skate down it" doesn't work for me, or anyone else who has very strong legs. I live up the side of a very large hill and I skate right to my door on the regular, but would most assuredly die if I skated down. Getting up stuff that's impossible to skate down is deceptively easy.

I live on a big hill too and it's the reason that I'm far more comfortable on steep slopes than gradual ones. I have no problem linking sharp carves in the steeps and keeping my speed low, but on a long gradual downhill I'll get going a little too fast for my ability to stop, at which point I become a bit of a runaway train and have to bail. Weird problem to have. Crushed a massive hill a few days ago and then got the worst road rash of my life in the run-out... Even putting safety aside, it's not a good look. I've been going to the park every day since drilling high speed p-stops.

speed is a big one for me. the stoppard powerslide is cool and all, but when i am going really fast i feel like i cant use it at all. planning ahead more is important, meaning slowing down before intersections and corners i cant see. also i still use a heelbrake, because combined with a t-stop you can break well at pretty high speeds
@moctezuma_2
@moctezuma_2 3 года назад
Powersliding from higher speeds will require you to gain more leg strength, but it will result in higher stopping power. If heelbrake is your thing, by all means! Just don't expect to stop as quickly as Stoppard does in his videos.
@Scragg-

I feel like risking falling on your butt at a slightly slower speed is better than falling or crashing into something at full speed. It's definitely a difficult maneuver to commit to though.

This is a very important video. Thank you Bill! Somehow anyone talking about safety tends to get stigmatized as being someone negative or paranoid, but that is really the wrong attitude. Remember the dead tell no tales and the ones who have freak accidents also tend not to talk about it. Think before doing, imagine what could go wrong, take measures to prevent it. Most of us want to skate without ruining our health so we should act accordingly. Also when skating on sidewalks care that you don't risk collisions with people and animals (dogs cats birds) especially with the more fragile ones (elderly and children etc).

Last weekend I went full urban skating with a friend for the first time. I was so tense because I was skating on the street, with cars sliping by, I lost I huge amount of my technique. And I also think I need to practice my stopping technique... let´s see what will come up on the next weekend.

Great video Bill. I think another one is checking your equipment before going out. I did a hard session at the skate park one day and the next day decided to go do a hill I had been meaning to try. I believe from all the stomping the rear bolt on my frame was slightly loose. While carving to control my speed on the hill my frame shifted well out of position and caused me to slide out. It was a painful lesson and I now take the extra minute it takes to check everything is secure.

Very cool video, and well edited! I got back into rollerblading almost a year ago (after a 10 year hiatus). The big "way to die" for me is too much speed, and keeping my feet on the ground with all that speed (ie. If i get air from a ledge/ramp at high speed i need to get my wheels on the ground sooner than later otherwise i might loose my balance and fall). I mainly skate in the suburbs, so, not as much traffic and people trying to hurt me. I still have to pay attention to street signs and my surroundings. Thanks again for the video, very cool!

Man, I absolutely love your footage. You got a lot of unique moves and you got the best style out of all these vids on RU-vid. I would honestly add skitching to this list. To the top of this list actually. Skitching, for those who haven’t heard of it, is when you grab onto a vehicle for a fast and easy ride. I think it gets it’s name from the amalgamation of the two words hitching and skating, and that’s where you get ‘Skitching’. But let’s get to real talk here. I used to skitch as a teenager and One time I accidentally hit a small pot hole, lost my balance and fell into the curb really hard. I remember just sitting there in terrible pain for about ten minutes before I could even get up. The reason it happened was because It was nearly impossible to detect the imperfections of any urban street, and it is that very fact that makes this act so dangerous. Especially in busy streets where there may be another vehicle behind you. It scared the crap out of me and I never did it since. I never want to feel that pain again and I wouldn’t wish upon anyone or anything. But what I was thinking was that in a big city like Toronto, skitching would be exponentially dangerous than in most smaller cities. I think you should totally either add that to the vid or even do a full vid focusing on this subject. I’m sure it’s hurt a lot of people who didn’t practice this safely maybe even killed some. I wouldn’t doubt it for a second. Also the skating world would be forever grateful, I am sure of it. Either way keep up the good vid making man. Solid work and great styles!

Excellent video, I know I've done several of these ways and been lucky to not have paid the price. Going to be smarter, thanks.

my experience to raise some awareness: if plan to go on grass, check out the soil first there a nice long hill near me (maybe 500-600 feet) that lets me get way beyond normal speeds. after leveling out for 15 feet at the base, theres about 30-40 feet of grass with a smooth base of soil to slow down while turning before the street. i once took it at the usual blistering top end speed only to roll onto the grass. it must have rained that morning and dried on the surfaces, so the soil was still wetter than normal and instead of rolling over the compact soil my wheels bit into it and i SLAMMED down faster than i could even dream of putting my hands out. slammed completely flat on the ground and barely had enough time to reflexively turn my head had i not been able to turn my head just in time, i more likely than not would have gotten up with a broken nose and probably some sort of facial fracture. both collarbones, the side of my face/cheek, and hip deserved solid bruises that took a while to clear i now take the hill as fast as i always have, but i do check the soil to see how wet it is and if i sink or not. there are also a few other nice downhill spots i love to hit too, but those never taught me this lesson since theyre bare dust otherwise :)

#3 was my fave way to die. You did a great job stopping & sitting smoothly, nice!

Wet surfaces are a big no-no for me. Strides get entirely unpredictable, hard turns are impossible, and there's no guarantee of avoiding or stopping before hazards. Also, being hyper-focused on the ground can get you scalped by signs and other things at eye level. Great video!

What's your opinion on Ennui or G-shock knee gaskets vs regular hardshell kneepads?

Watching this after a fun skating session in my small town. I had some speed and wanted to use a pole to swing a corner. Turned out it had metal braided cord attached to it and I caught some metal and cut my hand meat open pretty nicely. Your video reminded me to get a glass of water.

I really like you added #8. My city has a pretty bad drug problem and the spot to skate is our downtown/riverfront area and unfortunately thats also where a lot of dangerous people hang out. I ALWAYS watch anyone approaching me until they are a safe distance away.

What size wheels you use? I'm looking to get back into skating but can't decide between 90 and 110. Used to skate aggro and played plenty of pond hockey, so if I'm a bit rusty it will wear off quick.
