I’m leaning toward another idea, which is to eliminate the tv altogether.

Living in a Victorian we are restoring I really like the map idea! We want to hide everything modern so it is as if one stepped back in time. I also thought about a velvet drape of some sort.

How about an attractive decorative folding screen that stands in front of the tv. Possibly best placed near a corner of the room?

There are several companies that make a television that turns into a mirror when it’s turned off. You can even customize your own frame. I’m a widowed empty-nester, I don’t have a television in my living room. I barely watched television so it’s in my bedroom. My friend’s husband asked me, “Why don’t you have a television in your living room.” I replied, if anyone is coming to my home, they’re usually coming to visit me not watch television. A couple of weeks ago I had three of my Grandsons (all under the age of 7) spending the weekend. During the day we made cars out of cardboard boxes, that evening I set their “Cars” up on my bed all in a row and we pretended we were at a “Drive-In”. It was hysterical because they had no idea what it was!

We recently completed our retirement home with a very open floor plan, so here are a couple of ideas that I have considered for the electronic “black hole” above the fireplace, especially since MDH didn’t want our TV to be recessed; he may be purchasing an even bigger one once the prices decrease. YEAH!! 🤣 A). I have a beautiful (very large) antique platter that has black, gray, tan, red, cream, and gold in the pattern. I may (carefully) mount that above the TV. Nancy’s Daily Dish also sells black and white dishes and painted platters that could also be used. An inexpensive DIY project might be to decoupage some plates, platters, etc. yourself. B). I’ve considered painting the back wall, but since we have adjacent bookshelves and we’re trying to keep the space light, I’m not completely sold. Minimally, I’ll be incorporating some black/gray into our books and/or nick-knacks to distract from the TV. C). I’ve been playing with the idea of somehow attaching small acrylic mirrors to 1-2 canvases (since they’re light-weight) and creating large “mirror(s)” that could be placed in-front-of or attached-to the TV when we’re expecting company or doing a more formal event (it’s the only time I really care). Wallpaper and fabric might be other options. D). I have seen a tapestry mounted above a TV and pulled-up like a balloon/Roman shade. E). I’ve considered extending my mantle with a piece of glass, acrylic, or wood and placing vases, flowers, etc. in front of the TV for special events. F). A folding metal or wood/painted screen/room divider placed on the mantle in front of the TV is another option. G). I’m not completely sold on the wood-frame-around the TV idea; they’re too skimpy for my house/taste, though I recently saw a DIYer who had mounted a much “weightier” frame around her TV. H). A lot of local folks are having professional electronic “paintings” done, but I don’t have any details. I). Have you seen those “folding” TV’s?!? They were originally about 10K, but we can always hope!! Of course, we all know that the the key is to “pick our battles.” Since MDH is a great guy who doesn’t ask for much, I’ve definitely let this one go!!

One more is what I do - a tv lift. It sits behind a cabinet (34 inch high by as wide as u need for tv size) and at the press of a button it lifts up for viewing and then another button press lowers it down out of sight when I’m done. I think they’re often installed inside a custom cabinet but the disadvantage is if you want a new tv of a different size it may not fit in a custom unit. That’s also true of some of these solutions - it works better if they’re generously larger than the tv itself

I know this video is a bit old but something I've found people doing is using decorative tape to restyle the bezel of the TV. Super cheap and easy and it comes in tons of finishes to help match your furniture better like bronze, copper, even faux wood grains.

What about covering it with curtains that match your other curtains in the room? As long as they all match, it won't stick out, and they would be easy to move out of the way when you want to watch TV.

Watching your suggestions gave me an idea 💡! We have an older flat screen tv. My husband doesn't like the armoire that it is in. We are moving to a smaller place so it will need to be sitting, exposed. I came up with a great compromise. We have Roku so we can use RU-vid scenery videos to play when we want to make the big black hole disappear. Yeah! Can play video with or science or even pause to just one scene. And I didn't have to buy a new smart TV! Loved this video.

So one of my my long term dreams in life is to have a skoolie, so I tend to daydream about it for hours sometimes. About two years ago I encountered a problem: how can I possibly have a skoolie in a developing country (Costa Rica, where I'm from) without getting robbed? It's common for robberies to happen in regular houses! Houses with lots of fences and wires, my skoolie wouldn't stand a chance of surviving. So I decided I'd have to hide things, like computers and TVs, and it has been a nightmare to come up with an idea that isn't too bulky so I can hide the entertainment center. But you lady, you solved my dilemma. The map idea is BRILLIANT. I feel stupid for not thinking about it sooner! I can't tell you how thankful I am ❤️

I didn't notice how long ago you made this. 2 funny things about this one was- using "Craig's list" is almost obsolete in 2022 and I am shaking my head at the easiest and cheapest way to hide your TV/ you must not have heard of.. For goodness sake, have you really never heard of FREE RU-vid TV ART? I'm old and not tect savvy at all but even I know you can search and find so many long running [11 hours??] Nice mood music included- or not, on the FREE RU-vid TV Art options. Look it up, it's so simple. Wow things have really improved in 2 years.

We searched high and low for a armoire wide enough for our 55” flat screen. Any we found were either too far away or extremely pricey. Our solution was a black cottage style entertainment center with a recessed area for the tv with shelving on either side for decor. It also helped to arrange our living space such that the piece wasn’t the focal point of the room.

I've done the gallery wall with my huge tv. My tv sits on an old coffee table I've painted with chalk paint! I have 2 old louvered saloon doors on each side with a wreath on each, a large black (distressed) shelf above my TV with whatever decor is in season and a large round clock with worn looking tin as a frame. There's no use in trying to cover it here because it's almost always being used and it's far too large for an armoire. Love all of your ideas and love your channel.
