Great video. On the Walmarts, pick up your trash RVers. I don't want to lose this place to stay when I'm tired of driving. It's not a campground stay ONE night. Be respectful. I can't believe all the dog poop. Pass on the word, pick it up!!!!
Thanks guys, this video rocked. Here is a tip to save tons of money for your propane tanks. Never use your heater. The average price to fill a 30# tank is about $30-$35. 2 tanks is about $60-$70. Take that $60 and go to Walmart and get yourself a ceramic, thermostat controlled, variable speed space heater. If you spend a little more you can get one that oscillates. if your plugged into the shore power already, and your not metered on how much juice you can use, just use a space heater. Make sure not to use more then one per breaker or it will trip. We have been full timing it sense September, and there were days when it got below zero and we have only used our heater once and that was just to make sure it worked. A 30# tank will last us about 3 months of cooking and hot water for extended showers. Anyway, just thought I would share that.
Agreed. I'll add, U-Haul is almost always the best price for filling small tanks. In our area, they are $7.50 cheaper for a 30 lb fill over the local Super America (local chain gas station)
We've been RVing for 35 plus years the first 20 years with two boys.wont give up the memories for anything . your comment on don't buy it till you need it is so true.in jan we bought a new fifth wheel . when i sold the old one in dec you can not believe the stuff i gave away,(all the stuff that we thought we needed)when you get to a campground enjoy whats their is to do there .
You're right. The longer someone RVs...the more stuff they don't need. Before we left, my living room looked like Christmas and only half the items were "essential".
Hi Guys! I know this is an old video but, in speaking about the National Park Pass, Active Duty Military (All Branches) get a free Access America Pass. Disabled veterans now (as of Dec 19, 2019) get a lifetime Access america pass for FREE!! They do have to show their disability card (if the vet has one) or take or mail a copy of their VA disability letter to a National Park, Memorial or monument visitor center . This is new but the parks are on top of this so it's not fake and it really works - my wife got hers at the National Monument in El Paso (she took her VA letter there and they issued it to her).
It doesn't have a money-saving aspect to it [??], but you reminded me of a practice that many full-timers use: The 2-2-2 Guide. That is, on travel days, drive 200 miles [or LESS], pull into your campground by 2 PM [if you can/they let you] and stay for at least 2 days. Yeah... It doesn't always work for some things/events, etc. But it's way less hammering on the stress levels! ;) Keep th' greasy side down & keep it 'tweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen th' ditches, Y'all!!
Sign up for Wal-mart app and use Saving catcher. Scan your receipts and within 3 days if any thing is found to be cheaper at other stores ( minus Costco Same and BJ's) you get the cheaper price. Save them up and then cash them in for a walmart gift card. You will be surprised how it adds up and the only thing you have to is scan it to your phone within a week of purchase.
Not going "Out to eat" saves us a ton even on the short weekend trip. Plus cooking in "different ways" like over the fire opens up a whole different kind of experience. Thanks for the tips guys!
Would really like to see a video on the recording equipment you use. Especially as it pertains to keeping your handheld videos steady and your sound recording mike. It seems you have a small boom mike on the DSLR but I have no clue about the other. I've found the Lightdow camera to be very good and very affordable as a dashcam and for other background footage but my Nikon and Sony work well for video, except the handheld part. Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos, they are really wonderful.
That's on my list to do. I'll do it sooner than later. All my equipment is in the desc with links. The Rode mic with dead cat is there too. Thanks for the comment.
Hilarious how to save money and number 10 was don’t buy equipment you don’t need. I discovered your channel today and it was the video of you purchasing this very very expensive diesel truck and an apartment building for your truck to pull. How to save money hilarious! You guys are obviously very wealthy.
Great Vid. We are retiring end of the month. NEWBIES. Gonna get a class C - have a Toad. - In Fla. now but gotta get outta here soon. HEAT !!! Want to head West. But want to try to stay in good weather so our first year won't be too hot. Thanx for all your great vids. and info.
Disabled veterans can get a free National Park pass and in some states free state park passes. With those you get 50% off the cost of campsites. I use mine as often as possible.
You mentioned you're traveling up to the Pacific Northwest and I have a tip. On the second Saturday in September there is a Festival with an amazing fireworks show in Washington State. We're heading up there next summer. Apparently it's a bunch of firework manufacturers that get together and try out a bunch of their stuff. quincywashington.us/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=111&Itemid=377 There's the link. People swear it's amazing. Happy travels!
Great info. So when will u be in Montana. If u r planning on Glacier National Park, check www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/conditions.htm. Usually GNP Going-to-the-Sun Highway doesn't get fully plowed until late June early July. We had a heck of a winter this year. So plan ahead and keep that in mind. Would love a meet up.
Keep Your Daydream I see you're ready for Canadian travel already, eh 😉. You are going to love BC and Tofino is stunning. Enjoy all my province has to offer. We're hoping to be in Tofino at the end of July (sadly not in an rv though). Have fun!
You guys are great. My fiance and I are planning our Full Time RV Living takeoff in July of 2018. He turned me on to your channel and I'm hooked..Thank you for all of the great tips and tricks..Enjoy
I love watching your videos! My wife surprised me with a pop up camper for my 40th birthday (Coleman Bayside Elite). She’s so awesome, the only thing she didn’t take into account was the weight. It maxed out my 2006 Honda Pilot so after spending a season towing around Virginia my wife decided it was time to start looking for a truck, obviously I didn’t argue. My wife loves spending time in the mountains mostly because of the amount of wineries that are on the other side of Afton Mtn.This season we will be towing with a 2014 F150 FX4 (I pick it up in a week). We look forward to taking longer trips and we also plan on going home to the “mother land”. The U.P. of Michigan. Our kids just love camping and it’s the only thing that allows us to “disconnect” from our jobs.
In Canada the National Parks pass is FREE this year (2017) for residents and tourists - to celebrate Canada's 150!! It's going to be busy but it includes National parks and historic sites! Enjoy!
You can order online in advance to be mailed to you, or at the park gates, or CIBC (a Canadian bank) is now distributing them at branches. Tofino is amazing!! We're headed there this summer too (from Toronto - with our travel trailer). Enjoy!!
This year is Canada's 150th anniversary since Confederation. So being in Canada for July 1st is going to give you some amazing experiences. Also Park Canada is making their 2017 pass free - www.commandesparcs-parksorders.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=22953&urlLangId=-1&productId=524528 Enjoy your visit to British Columbia!
Bonus video, love it. Helps me get over the fact our RV is behind schedule so we won't likely pick it up for a few more weeks!!! Its killing us! lol Keep the great content coming. I am interested in the bike rack as well. :-) Just saying. Thanks guys.
Thanks for the information. We do a bit of beach camping and found that the outside carpet is a life saver to keep sand out of the RV. But I wonder if there is another solution? Any suggestions?
This is SO helpful! Thanks you guys for putting this together. We are starting our journey, looking at the expenses and thinking, how are we going to do this?? But this is incredibly helpful and inspiring! Namaste!
#LoveAlwaysAdventureOften. Read "The Richest Man In Babylon". It's not about specific ways to save money, but more about money management. It will go great with the money saving tips here.
“Put it down, walk away!” 🤣 My wife and I purchased a fifth wheel this week but I didn’t watch this video until now. In my meticulous planning, I bought EVERYTHING to include the “rug.” Love the videos and I’ve learned a lot from your channel and website!
Thank you so much for sharing the ideas. We have been planning our adventure of going full time for a couple years and now we are down to the last 3 months of work. We have gotten our 2017 Chev Duramax (Max) and our 2017 Coachman Chaparral (Chappy) and are in the process of getting our house ready for the market. Now that we are so close, whenever we have a minute, I am rewatching your videos and making notes. We are so excited and looking forward to hitting the road. We appreciate all of your tips and will definitely continue to follow your site.
Man the timing of this video was perfect! My wife and I are renovating our first RV in preparation for our post army adventures, and we were talking about ways to save and be able to do it off of my retirement/ disability income.
My wife and I are soon-to-be empty nesters and have the travel bug bad! This was a GREAT video! Thanks for the tips! I can't wait to try some of this with the love of my life. :D
Thanks for the 10 ideas. I always wondered about buying gear before a trip. Perfect plan buy if need and not just because. Walmarts have been mentioned a lot. Thanks for the video
No worries!!! We are headed on a two-week excursion from Kansas to Glacier National Park and then on to Banff in July. Hoping to see your setup before then so I can duplicate it!!!
if I was going to stay at Walmart that would be true if it would be free I would go in by myself so the evening I would go into the bathroom I would claim myself up real good wash my hair because they have facilities to do so and you make sure you use the bathroom I hopefully you don't have to defecate but if you do Walmart stays open 24 hours a day so you don't have to worry about making a mess in your RV that's what I would do and that's what I have done and that's what I will continue to do when I stay in Walmart parking lot. Lights camera action
Wow! What a great video! Those tips are going to save us a ton of money! Love you guys! It was great to meet you in Arizona. God bless and happy travels!
How do you boondock without (generator) electricity? Heat/Cool/Air. I did not know about Allstay’s or Cabela’s. Thanks for the tip. I agree that if I had stayed two more days at a park, it would have been cheaper than just 4 days. A week is cheaper. We have a pack that we will sightsee (daytrip) up to an hour away. FYI, if you book on line, you most likely will not get your discount. Call if using a club. Love the tip and tricks about taking food/drinks. We do carry extra water in a thermos. My husband eats once a day and I need a snack every 3 or 4 hours. Museum might be more fun if you ask if they have scavenger hunt list. Most have that, but won’t mention it unless you have a child.
Make a list of Planet Fitness locations. They're all over...$20 per month gets you into any of them, most are 24/7...showers, tanning booth, and of course work out equipment. I know the PFs' around me have big parking lots.
Have yall visited Salida Colorado yet? we have several festivals throughout the year and there is free camping at Salida east and the Arkansas river goes through downtown and there is plenty of places to go hiking.
Love your videos. Bought a travel trailer last year and have not been in country enough to take it any where but my yard yet. I have a question about the boondocking. I live in Alabama, and it gets hot here, and we have that thing called humidity. We have 2 big season and two 2-3 week blips between them. How does a newbie survive with out power, no ac. I have a generator, but it's not one designed for camping and I don't have 3-4k to just go buy one. I taken alot of your and LOLOHO'S tip to heart! Thanks.
Most museums are free but ask for a "donation" or require a fee for "extras" such as movies or interactive exhibits. Many zoos also offer a free day. Yes, the military is free for the annual national park pass. It's also free for those documented as disabled or volunteers with certain agencies and the senior pass is discounted - currently at $80 (lifetime) or $20 (year)
I forget what video had your comment about how you kept the rake for no reason. Today I went out to my RV and removed two Wal mart bags of stuff I have never used. In a small 21'-6" RV, this may not sound like a lot of stuff, but it has freed up a ton of room! I bought so many things when I first started based off of lists and recommendations, but never used because I RV my way, not there way. RV is a unique experience for each of us and thank you for reminding me of that!
Many zoos and museums have reciprocal agreements with other museums and zoos in other locations. If you have a membership to a zoo or museum in your home location ASK THEM if they have reciprocal agreements with others. It can be like extending your membership and getting to use it on the road.
We have found a way to save money while traveling is being a member of our local science center. They participate in the ASTC Passport Program which is an amazing reciprocal program. Our membership more than pays for itself in a visit or two.
I was talking to a friend this morning and she is using her membership at a reciprocal location in Korea this Summer. I didn't know it, but the ASTC Passport Program is worldwide. Making it an even better deal.
Hi Can you send a screen shot of the App for AllStays please. I have Android phone and I'm hoping I can upload the screenshot but when I Google all stays this is the only thing that pops up so that's what I downloaded but I don't think it's what you're talking about cuz I went to all stays website and it's different. No. It's not letting me upload a photo but the only thing that comes up is RV something but the actual name is not all stays Thanks in advance
Before you buy a rig, get it inspected by someone reputable. I bought one that looked great and had a fabulous interior but had been in an accident the seller didn't disclose. The costs of getting everything repaired was astronomical. RV parts and service is very pricey. Make sure your infrastructure is good before you take off. You don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere with no brakes like we were.
Insightful and helpful video. I just started watching y’all and am really enjoying your work and your obvious love for travel, adventure, and your family, my wife and 2 young boys are considering rv life for next year and we’re trying to save like crazy. Do you have any regrets on buying the travel trailer as opposed to a class a or 5th wheel? We are thinking about a travel trailer and a truck or van.
I have been looking for allstays and it sends me to allstays hotels. And a lot of other free RV spot places. But nothing like what I saw on the link ? Also I can't find the video for the space between the RV tires and why it's important to know ? Thanks love ur videos
These are very great tips and great ways to save money. Eating at home is a great idea instead of eating out so much. And camping at Walmart and Cabellas or even staying at BLM land is great for saving money at campgrounds. Great video. See all soon!
Great ideas other than Harvest Host. Cost more to take the winery tour for 2 people, and buy a bottle of wine, than you'll spend with full hookup at a nearby RV park.
Nice tips, thank you. I'm looking to do this years into the future so hopefully I can remember all this but if I don't, I can watch the video again. Anyways, on topic of museums & I know you're already past Portland so it's too late but for anyone else looking to do fun stuff in the Portland area, OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science & Industry) has a discount day, I think it's the first Sunday of the month if I'm not mistaken. Thing is, you gotta be there super early for discount day since it's packed, like I wanted to see a show in the omnimax (huge imax theater, very amazing) & decided to go on discount day since I was short on money. Arrived there a little over an hour before the show started & there was this massive line going around the corner. I barely made it in there in time, they were closing the doors when I got there but I got in. Still, if anyone is in the Portland area when OMSI has their discount day, it's an awesome museum. Interactive exhibits, submarine tours, a planetarium, the omnimax theater, & even a ride. It's a bit spendy going most days so definitely keep an eye on the website for when the prices are down since it's something the kids will never forget, truly a wonderful experience. I want to be able to go RVing in the future because I want to travel around so bad but my budget is tight, I plan to save up money these next few years & my parents are helping me out with it too thankfully because I could never save up that kind of money on my own. I want to do some writing but I want to adventure, see stuff & experience things so that I can have a better understanding on stuff I might be writing about. My whole life I've lived in Oregon, only adventuring out of state to visit family in Washington or that extremely rare vacation to see friends in California. Last year I got to go on an adventure through California because there was an event I wanted to go to in San Francisco & my mom had an old friend in Ventura who wasn't doing so well in health & she was hosting a birthday party at a very convenient time to the thing I wanted to do so we went through California to do both of our things, yes I used past tense phrasing on my mom's friend on purpose, you can probably guess why but what happened was recent so I'm not going to touch on the subject. Pretty much it takes a lot to get my family to travel & that's the only way I can afford to travel, I save my money to go to Seattle once a year for Emerald City Comicon because it's a very special convention to me & I don't like missing it but that's usually my big trip of the year. I've mainly only been up & down the west coast, heck I've don't even know what it's like going into a different time zone. I've always been somewhere touching the ocean, the idea of being in a landlocked state sounds so weird but I'd like to do that. There's so much to see & do out there but money is the biggest thing keeping me bound to the west coast. I figure RVing might be more budget friendly, especially given you don't need to spend every single night somewhere you gotta pay for like going through California with my mom, what killed our budget was the hotel expense, there were places where we just stayed in for one night on the way further down south just because we needed a place to sleep. The option of staying in a Walmart parking lot isn't open when all you got is a car with only enough room for one person to sleep uncomfortably. My grandparents use to travel to warmer areas in the winter since my grandma hated the cold, she absolutely could not stand the feeling of cold whatsoever. They had a trailer they'd bring & stay in during the winter of which growing up, I thought was super cool. I wish we got the trailer but they sold it when they were still alive since my grandma wasn't strong enough to make the trip anymore. It was a nice little trailer & would save me the trouble of saving up for something like that now. I wish I could ask them about their trips & get advice from them on places they stayed & things they did to save money but I didn't think about that sort of stuff back then. This is the next best thing, probably better especially given my grandpa was losing his mind the last few years of his life. He didn't remember much of anything at all so I probably would of gotten the wrong advice from him, if I got anything at all. This video is so helpful & I hope to be able to remember the stuff from this & your other videos in the future.
1991birthday. Read "The Richest Man In Babylon". It's a great way to manage your money. You can download it for just a few bucks. Cheep RV living RU-vid channel has great tips. You may not need a full on RV to get started. There are alternatives. I've been to PR, every state but two and nine countries. I've changed time zones more times than I can count. Manage your money. Get your RV/van/whatever and get out there.
Great tips guys. And plans are in the works for a 2018 across Canada, Hamilton Ontario to somewhere in BC and back!!! Thanks for sharing your journeys and inspiring us to take ours. Cheers, John
You guys are the bomb! In this politically correct world we live in I'm sure somebody will crucify me for that statement. My retort as always, get a hobby. I hear needlepoint can be relaxing. Great vlog, thanks for sharing.
My two friends you forgot one place in California salvation mountain niland California you can live there for free forever if you can stand the heat in the kitchen 😉
sweet...that was awesome, but you do know that we watch because you guys are pretty cool... see you on the road. MY RV name is Sunshine and our future blog is going to be RV Sol Searching... see you soon!
Keep Your Daydream, lots of great tips! One question, aren't there signs at Walmart that say no parking overnight? I don't know about Cabala's though. If I travel anywhere this summer I will definitely tag you guys in the post. I also loved the drone views. Colton
Keep Your Daydream Do you have to ask the Walmart to stay there? Or can you just pull up and park? Also, can you just stay one night and have to leave during the day or can you stay a few days and be there even during the day?
We're buying an RV in the spring. We'll only be doing road trips in the beginning but when our kids finish school we're going full time RV'ing. Would love to get in touch with you and learn even more.
Congrats Julana! Check out the KYD Insiders - that's exactly why we have it. If you're on fbook, we're talk with the KYD Insider community almost daily and others help answer questions. www.patreon.com/KeepYourDaydream
Thanks for some great tips! My wife and I just bought a new motorhome last year my wife is retireing in May and I have a little over a year to go. I do have 7 weeks vacation so I can practice for retirement lol your videos are an inspiration! We can't wait to hit the road full time...
National parks are free for anyone with a disabled handicapped plate (I'm an amputee and they told me this and made my day!!!!). We are in AZ too (the valley). Free Museums offered to anyone who has a Bank of America account or credit cards - Google "museums on us" 😊
Hi Guys Watched your video. Hear your going to BC Canada. Its Canada's 150 year birthday. Go on parks Canada web site. They are giving away free parks pass. So you can stay in our national parks free. BC and Alberta are beautiful. Go to Banff Alberta. You will be blown away. Have Fun Enjoy Canada.
Correction: Free access to Parks Canada locations. You still have to pay if you are camping. Also don't confuse National Parks (Parks Canada) with Provincial Parks that are regular fee.
We are looking for a travel trailer now. We used to camp in a tent a lot until my husband developed sleep apnea and now has to use a cpap machine so hoping to find a trailer that my truck will pull and still be able to camp. I still have all our camping gear.
It could work, but the still the most important thing would be sustainable water and power. I would still want a bug out land with those resources and use the RV for comfort. You could have a shed for larger resources.
Our solar video will be out this week or next. We don't use A/C, TV or Microwave... so we don't need a generator. Our needs are keeping laptops, phones and cameras charged, so out 2 6v batteries and 600 watt inverter work perfect.
Oh my when you said NM and cold...got a laugh we are there now left 90 degrees in Las Cruces to end up around Gallup with 35 mph winds and possible snow on Friday..yikes glad we filled up on propane in MS...not a week for being on the road for us. KYD. Safe Travels. Great video.
It was chilly there for us too! The only place my water hose froze was AZ! The Southwest gets colder than people think and much hotter than people think ;)
Great Job Guys! Just bought a KZ Sportsmen. I'm a RV Newbie. We are about to start our Adventure. Your info is greatly appreciated. It can get overwelming when you get started. Thank you!
Congrats Chad. You're right. So much to do and buy. We created an amazon cart on our website and created a category for RV Essentials and other categories to make it easier to have everything. www.keepyourdaydream.com/kyd-gear/
