I put mine in an empty doorway. I got a bunch of heavy duty cardboard boxes from delivery items and made a makeshift door outta them. I used a bread knife to cut out a hole into one of them , then used a thick sheet with a tension rod to further insulate and cover the unsightly boxes.
I would expect the neighbour to just spray expanding foam into the hole and close it off, burning out your compressor and blower motor. But good joke. Thing is, I've actually see this done with a conventional window AC in a restaurant though the other side was their space too.
Got one for my folks! central AC took a dump. My trusty AC guy said to do a vacum test to check for leaks was $800. Then if there was a problem with condensor or evap both would need to be changed cause refrigerant is different now….20K!!! Think he’s trying to hose us(no pun). So we got a portable for now. SoCal summers are hot they are 86yrs old. It’s a single hose. Works well BUT hose needs to be covered for the radiant heat and also any where air can come in. At first it wasn’t working that well until we saw the central vent on the ceiling. It was drawing hot air due to the vacum produced by the unit. Plugged it up and BAM…nice cool air!! Sorry for the long story but maybe adding my lamens $.02 can help. Keep up the cool vids please!!!!
Definitely getting hosed by the trusty AC guy.. Thank you for sharing all that, especially the part about the central vent! I think this comment is a great $.02 that will likely help someone out down the road. Stay cool!
We live in Southern Florida. We own our condo with a detached one car garage. Because of this, I am unable to spend time in our garage. I am a middle aged woman going through menopause and I usually get hot very easily. I have been wanting to use the garage for some small projects that I enjoy doing. I have been talking to my husband about possibly getting a portable AC unit so I have been doing my research. Since we do live in a complex with HOA, I want it to look nice, so I enjoy watching these videos.
I'm getting ready to purchase a portable AC unit for my garage. My plan is to raise the overhead door just far enough to be able to attach the vent hose, then block off the remaining open part with heavy cardboard or thin Masonite panels. It will be a little bit of a pain closing it off each time but I spend all day out there so spending a few minutes in the AM will be worth it.
@@pain.train123 Keep in mind that when you open the overhead door enough for the hose at the bottom, you'll be opening a much bigger hole as the top panel opens. I have this problem in my shop because the bugs and additional hot air that enter by far wiped any benefits from the A/C. A dryer vent through the wall was a much better option for me.
I’m in Florida and use my dryer vent with a Y connector and gate. My Y connector has dryer connected and a/c unit and then both vent outside. To keep the dryer from venting into a/c connection we put in a gate. You cannot run dryer at same time as a/c unit. So the connection leading to the a/c unit has the gate, when using the dryer you close the gate, when using the a/c unit you open the gate. The a/c connection does blow hot air into the dryer because I do not have room for a gate for the dryer connection, but you can add one or put a magnetic sheet over the vent inside the dryer BUT huge warning closing or gating the dryer vent is a very BAD idea as it can cause fire if it is not vented when dryer is running. Venting thru a clogged dryer vent thru the wall that leads outside can cause a fire so make sure vent is unclogged. And if the a/c vent gate is open while dryer is running can sent lent into your a/c unit. Therefore be careful using venting methods thru any existing heat vents. Also plug your a/c unit directly into a power outlet rated for you a/c unit, if it is not supported the plug will overheat. Thank you Word of Advice TV, great video
Love this guy! Just put it together, and the slides are uneven for window, leaving a skinny gap on one side. And now it's hardly cooling...agggggh. Thanks so much for this video. It's made me feel a bit better. 102º here in TX.
Sorry to hear about the heated situation! If you get some non-adhesive foam weather stripping, it should be really easy to cram that into those gaps and seal it up.
I put one of these in my commercial office space. I cut a hole in the dropped ceiling, removed the tile, passed the exhaust through, extended it and attached it to a steel girder about 12 feet from the floor. It’s been perfect for years. The windows in the building are floor to ceiling glass and don’t open.
I would've expected a basement to just be cooled by the ground around it. We used to just retreat into the basement during heat waves though that didn't help with trying to sleep unless we camped out down there. Our current house seems to have a radon problem which we didn't know about till my mother died from cancer so you would want to work out upstairs or stand on your head for a while after leaving the basement to get the radon out of your lungs (radon is heavier than air). We'd probably would want to do some radon remediation if we went to using AC instead of ventilating overnight which is what we do now. If you're staying downstairs with AC, get a digital Radon meter to see if you have a radon problem especially if you're close to a water feature such as a ravine or creek and or you have indications of foundation problems as that would mean the land you're on is a bit broken up.
I have central AC, but s till use one of these for the "shoulder" hours when Solar isn't quite strong enough to power the central a/c. Works very well.
You are brilliant I have like 50 inch tall pellet crank windows so I am just going to use the cardboard from my TV box instead of plexiglass cuz I don't have anything to cut that with and I'm going to buy a little air conditioner and feed it through there with some duct tape until my new motor comes in tomorrow tell me if you think that's pretty cool
The space above the drop ceiling in an office building is a return air plenum that returns air to the office's HVAC system so the hope is that the building AC is also running to take up the hot air so the portable is just to address a hot spot in the office such as a closet being used as a server room. I've seen a restaurant where they had a standard window airconditioner in an inside wall, dumping the heat into the next room which was actually open to the dining room rather than closed off, that is you could actually just walk around the wall without going through a door. I would imagine it wouldn't have been effective in cooling the room but would blow some cold air in selected areas.
I have Whynter dual hose, what I do is use a large bath towel, wet it a lil bit with cold water, then drape it over the entire exhaust hose for an instant hose cooler, and it's free!!!
If the bathroom fan works, so would the stove hood vent. It may be better for me to route a hose though that than run extension cords, Every room in my apartment with a window is on the same breaker, so running 2 AC units will pop it constantly. my 1 AC can't keep up lately with it getting into the mid 30s(mid to upper 90s). It's just too hot for a single AC to handle. The kitchen has it's own 20A breaker so it makes sense to use that for an additional AC.
I have a 10x18 foot shed I dry walled in ... Would it be ok to put it through the wall hole for portable unit ( then remove and seal hole in the winter) or is it better to install a window air conditioner unit into the wall I would leave in year round? I really don't want to put in another window
I'm really surprised that you did not explain the difference in a single hose and a double hose the single hose when you're blowing the heat outside that air has to be replaced inside for the air that's flowed out so therefore it is sucking air from outside to replace the air that is blowing out so therefore you are sucking heat back into the room that you are cooling. The double hose lets you replace the air that you were blowing out with air from outside without interfering with the cooler in the room.
They are all pretty similar but the dual hose units are definitely better. I can't say I did much research on which one is most efficient but I like the one I currently have and use. It's the same one I installed in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q9wVtlcUu6w.htmlsi=k7NqdHVVHi97rDg_
That's pretty long... It would work but the 20' of hose will be heating up the room which counteracts the cooling. In other words, it would cool the room but not very well.
any ideas for the garage without going through the wall or opening the bottom (I am a renter). I am thinking of popping out one of the garage door windows, thoughts?
A garage window would be best. Would you be able to make something like this woman did? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B64dXll_eyo.htmlsi=wCCjaxFpLzmuSwoh
Any recommendations I have a small sliding window that’s about 13 inches and when I look for a hose sliders, they tend to be at least 16 1/2 inches what do you recommend for me?
The bathroom fan moves a much LOWER CFM vs the air blowing out of the AC, and the vent pipe on some fans are either 3 or 4". ALso, MOST AC dont need to use the drain line. The water is taken care of on the evaporator coil. Only time the drain is used when you use it as a dehumdifier.
Presumably you would only have the AC setup when you're home but if you're concerned, maybe a broom stick cut to the right size to prevent the patio door from being opened further might help.
Are you talking about one of these: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DplS1GEZTe4.htmlsi=JDryAFUgoOq47RHC It's been working great so far.
Yeah... There's that too, though I'm not sure how long it would take for it to become an issue.. I am not well versed in the mold topic so I decided not to go there.
Though an AC that does not vent outside is effectively a dehumidifier. They actually advertise the portable AC's as a dehumidifier if you exhaust indoors when they say 3 in 1 or 4 in 1. Of course, you would have to drain the condensate out rather than let the heat from the compressor evaporate the water but there is often two condensate drain outlets, a low one for manual draining and a high one for a drain hose to drain overflows.
Can you install a wall through AC unit and have it vented to the attic and run the drain line to outside? I have a bonus room that the upstairs unit can't keep cool. I have a bout 3' space from the outside wall to inside.
I suppose renters may not want to permanently modify their residence or may even not want the landlord to know they are using an AC if the utilities are covered by the rent. Portable AC's are usually for when you want the installation to be temporary.
Portable A/C unit exhaust includes all the moisture that comes out of the air (easily gallons of water over a warm day) so not good to dump all that moist air into a space like an attic or under the house unless it's really well vented. Also never never use a single hose unit. They are horribly inefficient. Use a nice dual hose like you have there. 👍
What kind of filter are you using? I would use the lowest MERV or MPR rated filter available. Are all your vents open? You may have to use a cheap fiberglass filter if needed.
I have an addition to the house that I typically keep closed as it is unused. Is that the problem? It is farthest away from the system. I have thought of using a cheap filter, but it freezes up in spring if I don't pull the filter out .
Hello 👋 good buddy Jay good to see you my friend well guess what I hooked up a air conditioner like that last week for my cousin rental house and they had me to vent it through one of the window panes because they are what they call six over six and i took a block out and made a filler piece out of Plexiglas..its been extremely hot and humid here i got overheated day before yesterday and I got pretty sick i was by myself and pretty far away from anyone. I had Gatorade i was drinking but it wasn't helping me as quickly as I wanted so i saw some blackberries ripe and I went over and picked a couple of handfuls and ate them and it wasn't more than fifteen minutes i felt strength come back in me and I walked out of the trail back to my truck and came home i was working for my cousin building a boat deck for a pond they have way back on the end of there property, they wasn't home at the time so i couldn't call them but thank God for blackberries must be something in them idk..I hope you all are doing well my number one best friend. Tell everybody hi 👋 for me and I love you all very much take care and God bless you all.
Aloha David!! 👋 Ah wow, isn't it interesting how that often happens? You do something and then a RU-vid video on that topic pops up. I'm sure you did a great job with the install. The plexiglass sure is nice to use! I installed a window unit for my parents recently and used plexiglass too. I'm sure that deck you are helping with will turn out beautiful too. Yeah, it seems like mainland is having a bit of a heatwave. Your story about overheating was kind of scary. Thank God that ended well, good to know about the blackberries too! I hope you will be more careful with that going forward, stay cool my friend! All is well on this side of the world, not as hot here. Greetings, love, and blessings from Hawaii!! Take care and God bless!
I got lucky for sure I'm not going to put myself in a bad situation anymore because it's not worth it I almost passed out that heat exhaustion can sure slip up on you before you know it..
🏡YARD SALES: are unpredictable ways to meet people, know your neighbors, and coming home with lots of goodies and useful stuff...and sometimes with a collectible or a junkie that has a personal value😍
Overall, this type A/C (single vent tube) are the worst & most inefficient units available. No model has the "Energy Star" rating. I did not learn about all the down sides of these until I bought one, I used #3 to vent mine (through the wall with dedicated dryer vent tube). I am ready to switch to a window unit.
Dryer vents are only 4", 90% of portable AC's are 6" exhausts and the other 10% are 5" exhausts. Using such will drastically reduce the efficiency and possibly shorten the life of an AC.
I never even thought of cutting a hole in the wall to vent an a/c unit. Why not? We do it for dryers and range hoods. Duh.😊 Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us.ru-vid.comgaming/emoji/7ff574f2/emoji_u1f606.png
You need a 2 hose system. The ac takes air in, creates a negative pressure sucking in the 100 degree heat. These 1 hose units should be banned. A 12k btu unit really is only 4k but with the pressure temp loss.
I don't think I know enough about mold growth to be able to reply to this so hopefully someone else can come along later to provide more specific information.
