My mom said that her grandmother hired a krampus to scare them when there were young. He had a chain with him and when they would hide under the bed he hit the floor or the bed with the chains to scare them. 😶 (Sorry for my english)

Keiron Richmond Exactly I am Romanian and for me Haloween is wierd but i will not judge because on Christmas we have people dressed up as bears singing old popular romanian songs
@VasilikiTzalachanihappy
@VasilikiTzalachanihappy 6 лет назад
Well, another weird Christmas tradition is from my country, Greece. Depends in which region you live but we have three different ones. 1) We decorate a ship instead of a Christmas tree and we put it in front of our Windows. Some people decorate both a ship and a tree. 2) They smash a Pomegranate once the new year comes and in some parts of Greece they smash one pomegranate a day till New Years. 3) In the Greek parts that are closer to Bulgaria and FYROM they dress into a weird monster-goat-cow with big sheep bells around their necks and they dance around the villages and cities while being accompanied by musicians that play traditional songs. The Legends says that their dance and attire keeps evil spirit is away from the people and scares the evil witch called Mpampo. Once that is done kids roam the town singing Christmas songs and people give them money or chocolate (now that we have economic downturn)

I'm just saying that these may be strange to Americans, which I think is who this video is targeted to, but for some people it is there culture and calling it weird could be highly offensive. Just make sure your careful about calling other cultures traditions weird. I'm not trying to be mean so I'm sorry if It came across like that.
@rubyn7511
@rubyn7511 6 лет назад
yes you have a 100% right to say that, i was slightly offended by our traditions getting called weird. don't worry i totally agree.
@ingerjuni
@ingerjuni 6 лет назад
But wierd is not necessarily a bad thing, as a norwegain with a very wierd tradition according to the video, I thought it was funny and interesting to see our tradition through a foreign perspective, because they are actually right, traditions are wierd, you just don’t think about them that way because you are so used to them.
@ingerjuni
@ingerjuni 6 лет назад
The thing that actually is most offensive is the americans lack of knowlegde, we from foreign countries knows about american traditions, but they don’t know anything about ours, that is why they think our traditions is wierd, and we may not think their traditions are wierd because we are so used to see them in movies and other media. People from other countries tend to be offended when americans don’t know anything about the country you’re from (if you are from a small country like me), the reason why some people get offended by that is that it makes them feel like their countries and culture doen’t matter as much which sadly is true for my country

Ok I‘m from austria and your explanation is a little exaggerated... the ones that go from house to house go with the nikolaus who brings candy and stuff to children and the only other way you can look at the krampus is at a public show where basically different villages present their krampus creations cause the head is carved out of wood... and kids do not get scared often cause the krampus are nice to them and it’s mostly the older people (or kids from like 16+) that get scared by the krampus cause they „hit“ them with some branches... it’s not that brutal or bold how you describe it 😂

From Catalonia, I must correct, parents usually hide the log somewhere in the mountains, a forest or the house, then kids go search for it, once they do, they take it home, feed it and when the day arrives, parents put the candy and gifts and then the kids beat up the log while singing traditional Catalan Christmas songs (also about beating chickens and stuff) and then it represents as if the log had pooped the gifts and candy, that's like the gift, we don't wait for the next day (and also, parents eat the food you give to the tió when kids aren't looking to pretend it ate.

As a Catalan I'm so proud that you show this tradition, and I imagined it would be on this video when I read the title 😁 But as far as I know, or at least the way that my family or others use to do this tradition is not the one you show on the video. The kids "feed" the log some weeks before Christmas eve. That night they cover it with a blanket and "beat it" with the sticks as the video said, but after this, they instantly find their gifts under log's blanket (the family put them there before the kids start the "ritual", without their knowledge of course 😉).

A kind-of tradition where I'm from (Somalia) has nothing to do with Christmas or religion at all, but I would like to share it. So when I was a kid, my mom used to tell me and my siblings these amazing folk stories and legends my mom would tell us a new one all the time and one I remember was called "Dhegdeer" which translates to "Big ears". So in the Somali forests, there lived a cannibalistic old woman called Dhegdeer, as her ears were enormous and resembled an elephant's ear but more pointed. So this cannibal had a small house and every time there would be a lost wonderer to the forest, she would lure them to the forest and pretend to help them, then strike them, kill them, cook and eat them. So one day, two lost boys entered the forest, late at night trying to find their house but got lost because of the darkness. So they found Dhegdeer's house and Dhegdeer was standing outside, and asked to help these two boys and the boys agreed because they had nothing else to do and she took them inside, fed them, gave them a haircut and bathed them and treated them as if she was their mother and didn't start killing them. Then Dhegdeer did their haircut and then got a knife and killed and ate them. So my mom would always tell this story when one of us would go out by ourselves as we would "get lured and eaten by Dhegdeer" and I would get horrified as a 10 yr old.

Sounds like Hansel and Gretal (I’m sorry if I spelled that wrong). I live in America, I love that it’s a melting pot of a whole bunch of different cultures! I’m also a Christian and to me Christmas is the day symbolizing the day of my Savior’s birth!:D

Erica Roberts Yep it is really similar. And I like how you celebrate Christmas how it should be. These days most people celebrate Christmas but don't really care about the meaning and story of Christmas.

esta B.A. I think that was my mother's point because the story has been passed down for generations orally by Somali families and poets. So my mother obviously was told this story and knew the moral, and passed it down to us as a reminder that you have to be careful.

Nicolas arrives with a steam boat around the time of 6 November and from that day till 5 December.we put our shoes by the fire place every evening and than every night st Nicolas brings us thiny presents and candy, but on December 5th it is his birthday and he brings a lot of gifts.
