“Do you feel this vehicle is safe for highway travel? Yes I do. I know it’s not pretty to look at but it’ll get ya where ya wanna go”. 🤣🤣🤣 loved that movie.
John Hughes was hilarious. In that slow pan shot down the side of the car showing all the damage you see the right rear tire is a save-a-spare, indicating they had a flat tire incident we didn't even get to see! 😂
This car in this movie is an absolute must-see every year for our family. It’s one of the very few Thanksgiving-themed movies ever made. Candy and Martin are stellar together and should have been cast like this in more movies!
Speaking of FWD's in snow, I remember going to work in my '90 Geo Metro 3 banger thinking "this snow is bogging me down bad" Till sitting at the light I noticed the hand brake was on.
I had one of those, even with a piece of cardboard directly on the front of the radiator in the 10°F weather we get quite often in Pennsylvania that thing just wouldn't make heat, in temps that cold you could have drained the coolant and removed the radiator and drove that thing all over the place in those temps and the engine still wouldn't have gotten up to a real operating temperature, that thing was colder in the winter than an old VW Bug with rotted out heat risers, you had to dress warm in that thing.
@@CarStarz42 I bought that thing in the early fall when there was still leaves on the trees, come winter when it really got cold, and we had a cold one that year, the heater wouldn't make enough heat to defrost the windshield, so I put a thermostat in it thinking it was bad, didn't change a thing, put another one in that was the hottest one I could get, still no heat, then I put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator which wasn't any bigger than a large coffee table book, it looked like it could have been a heater core from the back of an ambulance, still nothing, then I took thing's apart so I could get the cardboard right up against the front of the radiator, still nothing, so I put cardboard directly on the front and back of the radiator, not one bit of difference. I doubt the thermostat was ever even opening, that little all aluminum 3 cylinder engine apparently was bleeding all it's heat out through the block and head, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that I could have drained all the coolant out of it and removed the radiator and it still wouldn't have heated up fully to it's operating temperature, it only had an idiot light with no guage but if it did I'll bet if the air temperature was anywhere around 15 to 20°F or lower it would have stayed on C. With a decent set of snow tires on the front of that thing and it'd go anywhere, it was like an Army Jeep, and about as cold as one to.
Me and my best friend went and saw this movie on Thanksgiving day 1987, we were 20yrs old then. Every few years since then we watch it during the holidays when we have the same weekend off.
I've seen that movie a dozen times, but never saw the connection between the Gran-Detroit and the Family Truckster. I love movie trivia like that! Thanks for the video and happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Thanks for this one. Planes trains & automobiles was a hilarious holiday flick. The scene where the car is in that death spin had me laughing to tears...👍🌲
Yeah, there seems to be a lot of varying HP numbers on those, not sure why that is; so I just went with the "around 100HP" as most ratings I've see for those were between 90-110ish for whatever reason. Good to know though😉👍
Well you got me! I have seen this movie countless times & is one of my all time favourites, yet I didn’t know what the car was called. (I knew what it was based on though) You have done another excellent job of research and teaching us a thing or 3. Thanks again, and keep up the great work. I see your channel is growing by leaps and bounds. Congrats!
Chrysler first generation turbo 2.2 introduced in 1984 was called the Turbo I and made 142 HP, it had a mechanical wastegate, in 1985 a computer controlled wastegate was added upping it to 146 HP. The next one called the Turbo II introduced in 1986 added an inner cooler and made 176 HP. The Turbo III introduced in 1991 had a Lotus designed 16V head and made 224 HP. There were several other versions of their turbo 2.2 engine's like the Turbo IV that had variable nozzle technology but were installed on very few cars. In an interview with Carroll Shelby he said that working with the Chrysler racing team for their factory race cars they were getting 700+ HP out of the 2.2 engine, that's not bad for an engine that stock in my mother's 1981 K-Car you had to shut off the air conditioning to keep it from dropping under 45 MPH going up the mountain behind our house.
this is wild! i was just thinking yesterday that it would be neat if you did a video on this car! thanks! such a great movie. slight correction: if memory serves those non-intercooled turbo 2.2s had about 146 hp.
Cool😉👍 Yeah, there seems to be a lot of varying HP numbers on those, not sure why that is; so I just went with the "around 100HP" as most ratings I've see for those were between 90-110ish for whatever reason. Good to know though.
most surprising fact to me was the 001 Viper going for just a touch over the quarter mil mark. i woulda thought over half a mil easy for 001. and i'm not even a real big fan of Vipers. oh well ya just never know. another excellent video my friend. thank you.
@@taur86466 right. Iacocca was an icon in the automobile industry. i didn't even think about that. like i say, ya just never know what a "special" vehicle will go for. still a shocker to me.
Yeah, they were planning a big Mark III Continental at some point too, not sure why they went they way they did, probably something to do with branding something, who knows😉
Its a film I only saw last Christmas but one, as I was never sure if it'd appeal to my British sense of humor. However I thought it was brilliant, a first class festive watch!
Excellent Video and you must have really searched and compiled a lot of info to make it and as a huge fan of the movie I learned so much I hadn't realized while watching it. Thanks Much and new subscriber today~!!
Cool video! When I first saw the title and thumbnail, I thought "That's kind of a plain car to make a video about" but really enjoyed it! Fun facts and like how you talk about model kits and die-cast too.
The power-reclining seats are probably because of the script. In Hughes' original script for the film, the rental car was a "massive green Lincoln" and Del describes it as an "86 Town Car."
Classic thanksgiving movie. What I want to know is, how did they torch that car without it rupturing the fuel lines and blowing up? Last thanksgiving I saw a video of a radio DJ in South Dakota who created his own close replica of the Farm & Country. He found an ‘83 model LeBaron convertible in Iowa and brought it home. Where he then painted it that same pea soup green and he even burnt the top off and dressed up like John Candy in the film.
Cool😉👍 Well, the fire seemed to have been kept in the interior only, so they probably extinguished it pretty quick after they got it burnt just enough to to look thoroughly toasted 😉
Actually the 2.2 Chrysler Turbo engine in '86 put out a lot more than 100 hp!More like 150!The non-turbo motor put out 100 hp.In honor of John Candy please do a vid on' Uncle Bucks ''75 Marquis.Or Packard's '77 Vette from 'The Wraith'.Rubber Duck's Mack would be cool too! Love what your doing, keep it up!'Duel's '71 Valiant also.
There is a 1:64 1983 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible made by the brand "Road Champs" , not the best casting since it was made in the 80's but there is one
Yeah, could only find the third gen '88 and up ones when I was searching for them though, but they probably did; not something that's still made today anyways.
I miss those days. Between this car, and the wagon queen family truckster, dragula, and Herman’s coach, K.I.T.T, and Airwolf; my childhood had some iconic cars in it. The list goes on and on. Sad to say, that Vin diesels Charger and Brian’s skyline and eclipse are gonna be my kids “icon” cars. There isn’t any real unique iconic cars like the ones I mentioned now.
3:24 When I was a teenager my grandpa‘s crazy older cousin who was a car salesman, a pilot and had his own aircraft ‘Beechcraft Bonanza’ that he would fly all over the place. He came over to visit one day out of the blue with this exact same car “or close to it“. I do you remember that the car would talk, whatever computer it had it would talk as it did certain things or functions. He said he won the car in a bet and he really liked it. My grandpa told me he was the type of person that would hype up anything that he owned even if it was garbage. I remember every once in a while we would see him flying in circles over my grandparents house/property. A few years later my grandpa‘s crazy cousin died in a plane crash.
A friend of mine has a converted town and country to look like this car, including burn marks and warped trim. You will probably see it around car shows in the Detroit area.
In 1998 I bought a 1988ish tan Town and Country Chrysler (a bland Lebaron mini station wagon) from a dealer for $800. He had it advertised at $1900 but when I said no it's too ugly, he said is it ugly at $900... I said I have $800 in my pocket...out the door. He said deal....as we were writing up the contract, he said he'd had it a year and EVERYONE said it was ugly. So he was ready to dump it for cost. Same car in th background at the dealer in Family Vacation. The trim around the plastic wood panel had faded to splotchy pink. I bought a pint of tan paint and a brush to recover the trim frame. Looked new. Really good leather seats. Spunky pep. When I brought it home I thought my wife would be upset. She said "I LOVE IT!". She was quirky artsy young wife. We drove 4 years it till 110,000 miles when the turbo blew. Good buy.
Love and enjoy your content. Keep up the good work. I know you have a backlog of choices and requests, but I'd love to see Herbie pop up one of these days. 👍
I just want to say I absolutely love your Channel carstarz ....you're awesome, man❤🎉This is why I subbed you and your killer car channel....Came for the death proof 👍 video Stayed 📹 😀 for the Detroit farm and County Turbo😂🎉❤❤❤❤ p.s. Car companies are funny about how their products are used on screen. Andy Griffith is a good example, the run of the Andy Griffith Show he had a deal with Ford, the good guys always were seen driving Ford products and the bad guys all others notably import cars of the day. Was revisited during the Matlock run where his team were always driving Fords old and new and the bad guys often appeared driving GM products.
Some of that movie was filmed right by where I live, most the driving scenes where there is snow on the ground, and when the train broke down, The train station is in south Daytona ny . And the highway scenes were north Boston ny on “the 219” between rice hill rd and Genesee rd exits , when they were going the wrong way and when the cop pulled them over , I saw them filming a scene that never made the movie , it was snowing pretty heavy and they had the car kinda far off the road down in the ditch, like they stuffed it in there at 75 MPH . A few camera men were at the front of the car filming what argument is going on. They had a car carrier/ auto transport with four of the green Chryslers and a dark blue cop car , plus the car in the ditch , I think this happened November 1986
Happy Thanksgiving to you too sir you make great videos man I'm entertained to the max can't wait to check out your model car Channel that was a sweet Camaro Z28 also think Happy Thanksgiving to all you fellow carstarz ❤viewers viewers
So I watched the replica car sell at Barrett-Jackson and got up close to it at the gala (I was a bidder, not on this car but still) and there was actually a FATAL flaw in the paintjob. The trunk said Del O Griffith (correct). The door said Del O Griffin (incorrect).
my Grandfather bought one of these wagons new. He wanted something with power to pull a small boat. The salesman talked him into the turbo. I was only driving a year or two. He would let me borrow his woody wagon. I would race kids I knew that thought they had fast cars. They would laugh and I would win most of the time, leaving them stunned. Ugly car but very quick for its day. I miss my Grandfather and this ugly car. I wish I still them both around.
Thanks for the video. Just watched the movie (again). All-time classic. How about next 10x facts about the Ambulance (1978 Dodge Tradesman) from Cannonball Run (1981) or David Carradine's Trans Am from Cannonball (1976). Or of course Rubber Ducks Mack Truck from Convoy (1978)?
Completely unrelated, but my first car accident was with a dumb K-car. I did a rookie left turn in my then perfect '79 Camaro Berlinetta and they hit me in the front right. She got fixed good as new but man was I whizzed.
