He suffered a catastrophic arm ( I think shoulder) injury while in the minors. I think it happened off the field, was not due to pitching, I think he either got into a car accident or was in a brawl, can't quite remember.

Sometimes when a person who wasn't around in 1973 only has stats to go by, shouldn't be making videos like this. You are 100% correct Austin Heidland. The Rangers were desperate for attendance and putting the hometown High School phenom on the mound at 18 years old, was that hook. They hurt him in every way, it wasn't that he couldn't pitch. He probably would have been a very good first round overall pick, but the rangers ruined him.

Tall, good looking kid with live arm...they kept shoving him out there regardless of results because he was considered a attendance draw. Sad what team economics can do to a young talent.

What Bush did was drive drunk and run over a man on a motorcycle. When he got out of prison, he had to try out for teams by pitching behind the Golden Corral where he worked (his probation terms required him to go from home straight to work, and from work straight home). Interestingly the Rangers managed (to some extent) to rehab two former #1 overall picks, Bush and Josh Hamilton. The only thing the most over-glorified AAA team in baseball has done somewhat right.

The Padres passed on Weaver and Stephen Drew because they were Boras clients. They skipped over Verlander over signability concerns, too, but in the end, Verlander signed for about the same amount as Bush.

How times have changed. He might have pre-dated sports talk radio, but I don't think he would fit in now. Now it's all bombast and shouting. His show was mellow. I would agree. Chilcott had injury issues throughout his minor league career that hindered his path to the majors. Had the Mets drafted Jackson he would have given them an outfield left to right that included Cleon Jones, Tommie Agee, and Mr. October. They settled for a platoon situation for a good part of the late 1960s and early 1970s that generally included Ron Swoboda and Art Shamsky. Swoboda and Shamsky were important cogs in the 1969 Met team but never in their prime had numbers like Jackson did in his prime years. Who knows how dominant the Mets would have been during the late 1960s into the mid-1970s had they drafted Jackson? In defense of Chilcott, who knows how good he would have been had he not been injured? Grote obviously earned his keep by working with the likes of Seaver, Koosman, Gentry, and later Matlack.
