Being British: Joel & Lia I feel bad when I don't speak another another language but at the same time there are other people who speak just English so that makes me feel better 😂
Being British: Joel & Lia about the language stuff. I am a Nigerian. Nigeria has about 502 indigineous languages. So even of U learn some words in 1, it cant serve U the moment you move 1hr away. So English is the only reason we can communicate. Also being an Island Country like Britain makes U less inclined to other languages. Australisans do speak English alone. English is the world language. Learn others if U feel so much guilt but it wont change the fact.
Being British: Joel & Lia in reference to what you had said about taking the citizenship test to become an British citizen There's quite a few Americans that have done The same thing and failed the test
“Joel: It just bonded us even more over how much we were moaning Lia: I love moaning with people Joel: me too Lia: yeah, we do moan a lot. It’s a dark pleasure to want to moan together. We like indulge in each others moaning.” Omg I was dying laughing and cringing during this conversation 😂😂😂 I never knew people used moaning instead of complaining 😂 that’s hilarious 🇺🇸
In the US, moaning is also used for complaining, as in the phrase "bitching and moaning." An example: "I get so sick of all the bitching and moaning on Facebook!"
I've finally figured it out!!!!!! The reason I love you two is that you are so transparent. You speak from your hearts and that has come through in your videos. I feel obligated to share in the conversation....please don't stop.
I’m British and the worst thing about being British and meeting people from other countries is that they either think we’re really posh and smart because of our accents or it’s they think we’re tough and are rough people because we can sometimes have a strange accent
Q. What do you call a person who speaks many languages? A. Multilingual Q. What do you call a person who speaks two languages? A. Bilingual Q. What do you call a person who speaks only one language? A. American I suppose you could also answer the last one “British.”
AntiSepticEye 666 I WENT TO SOMEWHERE IN AMERICA AND THEY GAVE ME THIS WEIRD SAUCE THING THAT THEY CALLED YORKSHIRE PUDDING AND THIS WAS IN AN ENGLISH PUB LIKE EXCUSE ME THIS IS NOT A YORKSHIRE PUDDING
When i went to London I realised you have really good manners, you are gentle and educated, and by the way I went to Starbucks, I asked for a coffee and I told my name to the barista, and then I realised she was Spanish, so immediately we switched to our language, it happened more than once! XD well I guess I should be back in order to know if the stereotypes are true! Well, greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Went to Japan and realised how ignorant I was when I genuinely thought every Japanese person would understand me... but the thought of my brain being able to understand any written Japanese is also too funny to even be sensible.
In a way it is good to be pessimistic. If you think something will go wrong either 1) it goes wrong and you were correct which means it isnt a surprise or 2) it doesnt go wrong which is a pleasent surprise Its a win-win situation
In America we don’t sing the national anthem before class, we say the pledge of allegiance😂 I’ll put down here so y’all can check it out. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. & to the republic for which it stand, one nation, under God, indivisible, for liberty & justice for all”.
I get that - It is history, and a way of saying 'we have broken away from you, and the flag, not the monarch is the new symbol of the country' - It is weird to us, because our flag is a mish-mash of England, Scotland, and Ireland, but yours is definitive - it is the States (stars) and Colonies (stripes) and where an ultra-nationalist here might fly the England flag (or Welsh etc) there is no equivalent in the US - Flying the stars and stripes is just an everyday thing not a statement as such... Young ones here probably do not know about Welsh Nationalism and the burning of holiday cottages in Wales, or the National Front - Ultra-Right English racists who wanted to send black people 'back home' despite them having been born here. I short I like being British, and would happily fly the Union Flag, but never the English flag, because to me, it has been tarnished by the National Front and the like. PS: The Welsh Flag is by far the most awesome flag in the Western World - just Google it!
Oh yeah, I know all about that. It's definitely 'same-but-different' your history in that case was the country dividing against itself - horribly of course - and that left 150 years of resentment of one half the country conquering the other half. It takes a special mental attitude to move on, and some people cannot do that. Here are comparative dates here and the amount of years of seething resentment and hatred that resulted: England invaded Scotland in 1296: 720 years England invaded Wales in 1277: 740 years England invaded Ireland in 1529: 490 years These were completely different countries - it would be like Canada invading the US, then Mexico, then Panama
The language thing is mainly to do with our schooling, we aren’t offered to learn a language until secondary school and we don’t have to take it as a subject.
Dominick Bundy ahh I’m from Virginia.. Seems like every state has different sayings and slang they use 😂 weird since VA&NY are pretty close to each other though. Someone said “bitchin and moanin” somewhere in the comments and I have heard that a few times before 🙂 they’re pretty similar I guess
*I am shocked only 27% of Brits agree that you complain too much, OMG!!!* Almost every Brit I've come across has either admitted that they *love* to complain a lot or that they *do* complain a lot! Personally I think it's your weather. I'm from the PNW (Pacific Northwest), Washington State to be specific, Seattle area to be more specific-specifically meaning: I totally get it. Gray, drizzly days are depressing! But it seems like you guys have more bad days than we do...😯💧🌦️🌧️
Thank you guys! I absolutely like the way you put on the information about British people and culture in general: in all honesty, showing all peculiarities of your culture (which is amazing, by the way🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧😁). Knowing all those things, I really do understand the language much better.
When I was in school, we had Tennessee History in junior high, then we had U.S. History and World History in high school (two separate classes). So we had one entire class on the history of our state, one on the history of our country, and another on the history of the entire world.
In Iowa, we had American government in 9th grade (Freshman Year), with a long session on Iowa Government (essentially a civics course). That's why people tend to forget it existed. But somehow it stays in the back of the mind. The state song and motto went head to head with the federal ones in elementary school, and although the is no pledge of allegiance for the Iowa flag, it was right next to the Federal one, like killing two birds with one stone, just in case of King-George-like "tyranny" lol
I have to admit that I’m trying to soak up things about your culture more than ever. Thanks for helping with that. I recently took an ancestral dna test, and surprisingly found that I’m almost 1/2 English! I thought that I was probably 75 percent German, based on the fact that most of my great-grandparents on both sides immigrated from Germany! It has opened my eyes to the heritage of my non-German ancestors. I love that you’re open to expressing both the negative and positive. Every culture has both.
I did enjoy the video! thank you I feel like Brits and French are so alike in certain domains (being pessimistic, the fact of complaining a lot, being rude OMG this one is so true) also, I think you guys should keep learning French
" Complain too much " only in private! In public brits would appreciate and praise the worst things just so that they don't seem rude. Specially in restaurants.
When I was in France and Greece, I didn't see anyone ordering salads except as sides maybe. And the French menus had potatoes all over the place as well lol
There is nothing new about different age groups being aloof from each other in Britain ... back in the '60s & '70s (yes I am old enough to remember) there was much talk of "The Generation Gap", with young people (the people now known as "Baby Boomers") being seen by those older as being lazy, irresponsible, unkempt and hedonistic. Similarly those in middle-age saw their parents' generation as being silly and incompetent old fuddy-duddys .. I remember my mother being almost in tears (I think her mother had done something to irritate her) and telling my dad that the entire country was doomed as it was only her generation that had any idea what they were doing. This view of the elderly was brilliantly lampooned in a Marty Feldman sketch in 1968 featuring John Junkin and Tim Brooke-Taylor ... :) ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n326mhTfQr0.html
Roger, a Ynkee from the States here. You are spot on. In fact, in the movie Hard Days Night (i.e., a classic!!!). I think it was John saying to a middle aged (executive?) riding on a train - "Heh, I bet you aren't glad you won the war, now, are you?!" Meaning, you look at us (the youth) and can't believe you sacrificed so much for the younger generation!! (I'm paraphrasing - watch the scene in the movie and it will do better justice - but I think you get the point).
Well America was founded by people from England as a matter of fact 1 British guy looked it up and Americans actually speak the original British accent the British at some point after America was founded started their accent with the upper classes then it trickled down to what it is today.
Very good one and I say this as an American with sadly crooked teeth. I think Brits have some similar perceptions as we Americans. The sense of self-perceived superiority is strong and it really has impacted how I relate to others when traveling abroad. Anyone hailing from a country that is famous and/or powerful could experience this. Knowing that it's easy to be the Ugly American means treading even softer than what seems quite normal. I am in the military and even use this when I am in places like Iraq or Afghanistan; anywhere overseas actually. Always try to act like a guest and know that not everyone--and sometimes no one--wants you there. I worked with some awesome Brits in Afghanistan and they acted the same way; no smug sense of superiority at all. I feel like you are our cousins and feel the same about your Army as we have very similar military cultures. I particularly noticed something odd in Brussels. Not in general in the city but at the airport and I mean big time. I got the distinct impression that I was almost expected to act in a way that the locals would see as contemptuous. I also saw folks working at the airport treating folks from Africa who were flying through there quite rudely. It got to the point that I just did not care. Did everyone do this? No, but enough did to form an impression in my mind. In other words and sadly, acting courteous did not seem to get any effect. In one case, I could really sense some coldness from one particular person once she saw my US passport. "Well, excuse me for being interested in your country and traveling there!"...nudge-nudge, wink-wink. :-) You really just have to laugh at it and I sure did. However, these kind of things really do help form the stereotypes and stigmas that shape our opinions.
I am from Iraq, and I had never felt the US soldiers in Iraq were superior to us! Otherwise I found them ppl. who intrude themselves in every country, create wars here and there, killing innocent ppl and they’re thieves..they came to divide our countries and steal the oil !! So I would only consider ppl superior to me when I see they have higher morals than me, not because of thier nationality!
I always love watching your videos. Whenever I see the notification that another video has been uploaded, I stop what I'm doing and watch the video straight away. Your authenticity and infectious humor uplift my spirits every day!!
The point you have mentioned about language is quite right. His is the reason most countries have taken english as their official language no matter what language they speak
Pretty much bet most places idea of Americans/America is from TV and they think the US is just NY or California. So yeah there's a fair share of ignorance to go around
I definitely agree about the weather. I’m American but I live more northern. It’s constantly cold and our doesn’t really stop being cold and snowing until mid April. And once the weather picks up, my mood completely changes. I’m happier about everything with more energy. Everyone hates the winter and many (omg after watching this, i almost said ‘loads’ haha) people hate how winter makes us so depressed. But the south is usually always warm, so I can’t speak for them.
I'm American & I'm becoming so addicted to your channel - surprise, surprise. I always find something interesting every time I visit it. Keep up the good work 😃😃😃
Seems like the US is the same regarding only speaking one language. We’re supposed to take 2 years of another language in high school and it really teaches us very little. No one remembers much of anything after it’s over.
Dear Max,learning so many languages, cultures,so forth is exhausting,be realistic.Your mindset is like this.someone will tell them try to learn French Cuisines and the list will go on and on.To each their own.
I do agree about the moaning and pessimism - and it drives me mad. I can't stand to be around negative people, they are like Dementors sucking out my soul! Great video xxxxx
You two are the best! I'm American and watch your channel often. I thoroughly enjoy seeing and hearing about similarities and differences with American and British culture.
Watch a Hard Days Night - the difference between the age groups and what the "older" generation thinks about the younger one is subtly done when John says to a middle aged (executive?) - something like, "I bet you're disappointed that you won the war?!"
@@deathbeforedecaf7755 how are we being full of ourselfs? that person is just saying that their proud of being british! just like everyone else should be proud of where their from, theres nothing wrong with tha is it?!
I love how they agree that they’re ignorant of other cultures, but they can’t seem to understand that American culture is just another culture that Joel and Lia are highly intolerant of... culture is not just language
Yeah, I agreed with pretty much everything you said. I do think we can be quite arrogant, in that we expect other countries to speak English. Although, I'm guilty of this🙄😶 I think we're extremely pessimistic, and I actually believe it causes problems of underachievement for kids later in life. Where's all the positivity? lol
I think another popular British stereotype is that British food is boring and bland - I think it may have been true in the beginning, but certainly not in the last several years
I really thought Joel and Lia would certainly cover the likes of Austin Powers (the plaque on his cheeks, gums, and huuuuuuuge choppers) get deserved attention.
Very interesting guys. I think this provides some good talking points for my class. Hopefully I won't have to explain the whole "moaning" thing. Haha! Great job! Thanks! Love and cheers! 👍💗😘🇬🇧
We use moan both ways in the US. Someone can moan in pain or pleasure. But if your running your pie hole because you don't like something then your just bitchin and moanin lol :P
I LOVE to watch you two!!! Video suggestion: I would love to see a video breaking down the different accents of Harry Potter characters. I know you’ve used some as examples in other videos, but i need more!!!
While you were talking about brits not eating very healthy, I ate a pack of crisps & a whole sharing bag of aero bubbles! 😂 I'm not really helping with these stereotypes, am i? 😂😂😂
Being British: Joel & Lia >>> FWIW: Years ago I read somewhere that the 'bad teeth' thing came from the fact that the 'focus' of dental care in Britain was more on treatment, whereas in the USA prevention was stressed more. I've never visited the UK, so I have no first hand knowledge of this...
I'm an American w/no British ancestry(as far as I know) and my teeth are pretty messed up even though I had braces. Also, there a lot of people here who have dental issues so I'm not alone. I guess it's movies that make people think that everyone in The States have great teeth. P.S. Yes, you both have terrific smiles (& I've noticed many Brits do:-)
The teeth thing is not that British people are more likely to have bad (ie rotten) teeth. It's more that British celebrities didn't get on the cosmetic dentistry bandwagon as early as their American counterparts. Most American celebs have had their teeth straightened, capped or whitened. (Maybe all three.) I think this is also probably a dated stereotype.
There's actually a really good book that explains a lot of these tropes called "Watching the English" by Kate Fox. It only really covers England (the author is an English anthropologist) tho but it's still well worth reading!
I only had to say the pledge of allegiance everyday during elementary/primary school. After that, it wasn’t done. And the next school was literally next to the elementary school. A fun thing that was done during that time was that for school assemblies, the Star Spangled Banner, La Borinqueña, and Lift Every Voice and Sing would be sung.
Deimantė Frolovaitė Lithuania is definatly not, in central Europe. Go on to Google maps, and look between Ireland and Moscow. Lithuania is definatly east. Poland, is central albeit slightly east. Germany is bang in the centre.
I stand corrected. I just googled your information, and yes you are correct. I never would have thought that! Wow, learn something new everyday. So my Poland is central Europe not Eastern!
God save our Gracious Queen Long live our Noble Queen God Save the Queen Send her victorious Happy and Glorious Long to reign over us God Save the Queen (And I am South African...lol... Ask me to recite the South African national anthem and I won't be able to)
O Lord and God arise Scatter her enemies And Make them Fall Confound their Politics Frustrate their Knavish Tricks On thy our hopes we fix God save us all Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pour Long may she reign May she defend our laws And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice God save the queen
I'm from Kansas! "Moaning" is weird. That's a sexual term in the US, doesn't mean complaining 😂 yikes I see a huge intolerance between generations and class here in the US today!!!!! How similar!! There's a huge divide between milennials vs baby boomers, middle/upper vs lower class, and republicans vs democrats!!!
I would disagree with whoever told you that "moan" is purely sexual in the US. But, it definitely tends to mean more vocalizations like "aaah", "oooh", and "uuuuh", which can turn up in both complaints and sex. We wouldn't use it quiiite as much as a synonym for complain but I have heard it used that way here, albeit rarely.
We never had to recite the National Anthem in class.....They use to have to say The Pledge of Allegiance in class back in the day, but no one does it now in school anymore.
You are taught that UK is the greatest country in the world??? Seriously??? I assume you wanna say "WAS", otherwise, this is gonna be the best joke ever, period.
The trick to being the best country in the world is you don't have to be taught it. You just absorb it from the culture and history until you come to believe it without realising it. You then look at all the flag waving and chest pounding that happens across the pond and shake your head. For GOT fans you are reminded of Tywin l
Is the glass half empty or half full. It depends on how you fill it/empty it. If you’re drinking the contents of the glass then it is half empty, as you are emptying it If you’re filling it up half way, it’s half full, as you’re filling it
Nah older people are better in my opinion because the ones I talk to know a lot about the world and knowledge and the have good stories. But there are some horible baby bloomers too and its the same with milenials.
Lia mentioned "getting down to the graft of it" in this video referring to 'hard work' . In the U.S. graft means monetary gain through dishonest means... or a plant scion.... but we never use this word for work. I find that interesting.
I guess I fall out of some of those number then. I speak 8 languages and I'm currently learning 4 and one of my best friends is an immigrant from Lebanon. Our other best friend she lives in a different class to where I do, but she's one of the best people in my life and I wouldn't change it for the world. I'm only pessimistic because I have clinical depression from traumatic experience but I do always try to look towards the optimistic side of things and my GP has helped me a lot. I've applied to the local college to do an access to HE - health so that I can apply to university next year to do a second degree in adult nursing and/or midwifery.
Love your video! You guys are awesome and so funny. I have to say that as an Asian I don't find British people nice after studying here for a year, and I indeed have experienced some unpleasant racist behaviors from the locals. But! You guys have actually changed my negative impression towards Brits. Thank you!
