Yeah a lot people like to knock Namath that he is in the HOF. However he was the first to throw for 4,000 yards(in a 14 game season no less) and he played in an era where guys like Ben Davidson we’re ripping quarterback heads off, he broke Namath‘s jaw and Namath went back and showed no fear.

Are people really saying that Joe Namath is overrated ? People need to go back and realize exactly what he did for the sport of football: Joe Namath was the first quarterback to pass for over 4000 yards in a season, oh, and he was the first AFL quarterback to beat an NFL team in the super bowl at super bowl III. Had the jets not won super bowl III there wouldn't have been a merger. The man made HISTORY. Stats can also be misleading, Joe Namath was a damn good quarterback during his era. First one to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season. Overrated ???. Think about this: Vince Lombardi, John Madden and Bill Walsh all said he was the greatest "pure passer" the game ever saw. Bill Walsh: "Had he had an injury free career, he would have been the guy with all the passing records, not Brett Favre". In 1967 he threw for 4000 yards. This was not broken until 1981 and a 16 game schedule. From 1967 until 1980, 13 full seasons, there were only 10 games in which a QB passed for 400 or more yards. Namath was the QB in 3 of them. Remember it is the HALL OF FAME, not the Hall of Statistics. Namath brought more "fame" to the game of professional football than just about anyone before or since. Anyone old enough to have seen his style of play understands he belongs in the HOF.

Broadway Joe was good, but he would not have been half as good without Don Maynard. In 1967 when Namath threw for 4,007 yards, Maynard caught 1,434 of those yards leading the league and averaging 20.2 yards per catch. In 1968, Maynard caught 10 of Namath's 15 touchdown passes. Namath and Unitas threw old footballs before the NFL introduced the Ultra Pebble design in 1981. After that, all the passing and receiving records began to fall, and even mediocre quarterbacks with poor form began throwing for 400 yards in games. Also, they played with the slick white-striped night game balls from 1956 through 1976. They were much tougher to throw and catch. Furthermore, in those days the quarterbacks and receivers were not protected from being body-slammed each game. Namath didn't have as many touchdown passes because his coach didn't like him throwing near the goal line. Namath and Unitas were the Larry and Magic of the 1960s.

He played the role of the punter because he could throw the ball 80+ yards with over 5 seconds of hang time. He was severely limited his entire pro career because of recurring knee injuries, he should be much higher on this list. He is responsible for higher wages for players and the successful merger of the AFL and NFL. Vince Lombardi: "Let's face it, as long as they have Namath, they're a football team." You can debate his greatness as a quarterback all you want, just like you can debate Elvis Presley's talent as a singer or Billy the Kid's skills as a marksman."

If joe Namath never existed, the nfl would just be the NFC getting all the good players in free agency and the AFC would probably be disrespected until the free agency era, he is the most important player in terms of the layout of football

@EOLA 05 He may have actually played the best single game a QB has ever played when he won that SB...the Colts Defense was awesome and he called all the correct plays. Sometimes you can't just look at the stats. Okay not #1 of all time...but only QB who had a better arm that I can ever remember was Dan Marino and maybe John Elway.

Most people don't know that Joe didn't pass the ball one time during the forth quarter of Super Bowl III, and he called all the plays. Does anyone doubt he could have passed for a few yard late in that game? He wasn't interested on looking good on the stat sheet, only in winning the game and whatever was the best way to do that, they couldn't stop the run, so he kept feeding the rock to Matt and Emerson. That is why he was the MVP of the game, it was the use of his brain that lead to that trophy.

OK, here are 2 automatic winning bar bets: 1-Who was added to the Jets as new quarterbacks during the 1965 draft? Joe Namath, John Huarte(Notre Dame) and Cosmo Iacavazzi(Princeton) who played fullback but also quarterback in the option. 2-Houston Rockets picked Hall of Famer Akeem Olajuwon as 1st pick. Why was this a mistake? (Because a few picks down was one Michael Jordan, who would've fit in with Ralph Sampson, the giant center they already had.)

Joe Namath is unquestionably the best downfield passer of his era and among the best of all time in that regard. From 1965-74 (his physical prime years) he averaged 7.6 yards per attempt and 7.02 net yards per attempt, and 15.1 yards per completion. Not one of his contemporaries can match that kind of yardage production for that long. In addition to that, Namath mastered the ability to avoid sacks and fumbles. In 140 games played he fumbled just 33 times and was sacked 109 times. The only other passer who is comparable to Namath in avoiding sacks during that era is John Brodie. Namath's quick release, rocket arm, and uncanny deep ball accuracy make him one of the greatest pure passers of all time. The great Dan Marino modeled his mechanics on Joe after his father introduced to him the book "A Matter of Style". When you factor in the guarantee and winning the most important game in pro football's history, SB III, there's no question Joe Namath is a deserving hall of famer.

To everyone complaining about ranking in every video, SHUSH! Just think of top 100 as a close tie for first among players dispersed among nearly a century's worth of seasons. Only interesting arguments are about those unfairly left off the list, but it's so annoying to see every video thread lead with a "too low" (or occasional "too high") comment. You can't win the argument. It comes down to emotions and cherry picking facts when arguing about placement of the players on this list. Players are honored as the best ever merely by being in the top 100. If commenters want to keep it interesting, rather than irritating, ask who is not in the elite 100 who deserves to be.
