A MASSIVE thank you to everyone who has subscribed as I figure out how to do this RU-vid thing. I am massively grateful to you all, it really helps boost motivation to get out and find these gravel routes. I hope they are proving helpful and getting you guys inspired to go out on your gravel bikes too!
Today's epic ride takes us from Dalwhinnie along the shores of Loch Ericht to Culra Bothy before climbing up the Bealach Dubh beside Ben Alder. It's then a fun downhill back to the loch and Ben Alder Bothy. From here it's a bit of a disaster as I hike-a-bike to the Dam at the southern tip of Loch Ericht.
Quickly blasting along the edge of Loch Rannoch, it is then time to climb again up to Glen Garry. Once up, it's a fun scoot along Loch Garry and along the Pass of Drumochter back to Dalwhinnie.
An excellent day out, with excellent weather.

That bog slog 😮😮😮 honkin! Fair play for keeping that in your video though mate... A good route planning reminder to us all! Gneiss joke 😂

As someone who lived in Assynt for thirteen years, I did get your Gneiss joke.

That run was an achievement - you are on your own there if you have a prang with typically no reception - and some 'portage' necessary for the bike at the dam! Loch Garry...'where did all the water go'.....interestingly (to me anyway) there is a tunnel from Loch Garry to Loch Ericht to drive a power station there. Quite a bit just goes downhill to drive the turbine. Nice run...not all the jokes were Gneiss though - perhaps some lacked humour permeability. Good for you - that is quite a circuit in a true wilderness.

Good ride. I’d have gone the extra distance to Loch Ossian and down to Rannoch over the old road to the isles to stay on better gravel. Brilliant ride all the same! Respect.

Super scenery, and yes, while cycling Blair Atholl to Newtonmore, I too wondered where these trails to the southwest went. Now I know 😀

I’ve had this route plotted for some time (having done Rannoch to Corrour a few times). Having watched a few similar YT vids now, the hike-a-bike sections and suitability for a gravel bike have probably made me hesitant to try it out.

It's definitely a commitment to do it on a gravel bike. I think I have accepted that a proportion of my routes will involve bog trotting or hike a bike. I like to hope it's worth it, but often pushes the suitability of the gravel bike for sure.

Have you done this route yet on your gravel bike? I've got the same dilemma with my 45mm tyres but I've just bought a 50mm front tyre so I'll be just going for it at the next opportunity.

Hey, I probably won't do this exact route again but I have planned other routes nearby that I have yet to ride. So that's an option 👍

Bit disappointed you did not show loch abealach beith which you pass on your way just before you decend to benalder cottage,
@RustyRidesGravel
@RustyRidesGravel 2 года назад
Hey - the route didn't go up past that loch - it went over the Bealach Dubh pass and around the South West of Ben Alder and down Bealach Cumhann. I did consider going via Loch a' Bhealaich Bheithe but thought it would be less "ridable" on the gravel bike, so went the other way.

Noted! Not sure I have the confidence to just have me huffing and puffing through an entire video yet. I might still keep the music to drown all that out ;)
