Some of the terms were new to me as well, but it put in context a LOT of genre conventions that I'd internalized over the years.

Another great video! 1:18 I consider sound novel a relevant term only because Ryukishi adopted it to describe Higurashi and he's the GOAT to me.

I've got a tough one for you. I've grown a lot as a Ren'Py developer thanks to you, so if anyone can steer me in the right direction, it's you. I'm trying to craft a unique notetaking system. Some have presented something a little similar, but they go off in in different directions because their systems are still different. I want the notebook to be on its own screen [got that], have custom text entry with a very high character count [only somewhat got that], retain the content of the notes [don't got that], and be fully available to the player at any time [don't got that]. Imagine the History page except the player types in everything, or Post-It Notes in a book format. The player can open the screen and it can be a list of entries like the Save screen, or it can just be like a scroll a mile long. Either way, I need it to capture typed user input, retain it, and display all it to the player on demand. I can't find anyone doing this exact system, so I don't know how to move forward from here. Would you ever try this out and make a video on it? I've been piecing it together, but I get stuck on making the most important pieces intersect. I feel like I can do it, but I also feel like I'm missing some key information that ties all of the pieces I've smashed together into a clean and useful genre transforming feature.
@Milkymalk
@Milkymalk 2 месяца назад
That's not really difficult to do. Store each entry in a variable and put it on the custom screen. What exactly are you struggling with? You would start with an empty list notebook = [ ] and then add the notes as strings to it. The display screen them iterates through the list and displays them.
@JimmyCrackorn
@JimmyCrackorn 2 месяца назад
@@Milkymalk I'm struggling with getting the text entry part going. I had experimented with it before, but it seems that I can only get it to work by setting it up like a custom name entry. I'm trying to accomplish a title / subject entry, followed by a body / paragraph entry for each. I hadn't learned that I can capture data with variables yet, but I'm able to somewhat picture what you're saying. I'm stepping into a more advanced level of Ren'Py development, seeing that it can do a lot more than I initially thought. I'll see if I can dig up which variables are best suited for capturing data in this way. Your comment is a huge push in the right direction, and I greatly appreciate you investing the time to help me with this.

A really cool video overall! I was suprised to learn there were terms I didn't know of (mainly some professional gamedev ones, haha). For example, I didn't realize there were names for certain narrative structures in VNs. I'm gonna have to take notes... A point I'd like to raise, though: the term "Bara" as you described it is only popular in western VN/anime/manga circles. In Japan itself, it's considered controversial - and many gay creatives there have expressed their discomfort with the term. Over there, the term they'd use (for manga at least) would be "geikomi", with subterms used for the body types they're depicting (eg. "gachimuchi" for muscly characters). Otherwise, good work!
@vimi
@vimi 8 месяцев назад
I put a little asterisk there on the "bara" part in the upper corner that covered the controversial nature of the term, but I did not know about the subterms 🤔. If I revisit the subject, I'll do a little more research to figure out those subcategories!

A lot of fandiscs tend to use the anthology story structure, but it's also a good opportunity to have multiple dev teams collaborate on a singular VN - Ukraine War Stories comes to mind in particular. vndb.org/g830 I'll try my best to update more often!

Half way thru the video, bu im curious what VNs do you recommend for some one looking to learn more about the genre. I think the only one I played was Doki Doki Literature Club.
@vimi
@vimi 8 месяцев назад
Depends entirely on what you're into! There's plenty of Kamige that people recommend (Danganronpa, The House in Fata Morgana, and Steins;Gate were all recommended to me), but there's also a lot of weird, interesting stuff that you might not find if you stick only to the "classics". Personally, I really enjoyed Psycholonials, Scarlet Hollow, and Florence, but I'm usually trying to find more off-beat stuff. South Scrimshaw is another weird one I've been trying to find time to play, but I have also been trying to play other classics like Narcissu, 428:Shibuya Scramble, and Clannad.

@vimi
@vimi 8 месяцев назад
Maybe at some point? Personally, I think if you have no real graphic design experience, you're better off using the default layout/settings that come with Ren'py or Naninovel - they usually design the defaults to work well enough. I could think about it for a future video, though!
