Love this! She really broke down the difference between the stereotype vs the reality of _autochthonous_ African women on the African continent. People don't realize just how diverse women of African descent are _within_ the African continent itself. African women were the first _modern_ human beings and have had _over_ 200,000 years to be genetically and biologically diverse. Some autochthonous Africans also have blue eyes and blond hair b/c "blondism" is really just a form of _albinism._ Other human populations have been here for less than 60,000 years of human history and they came from A FEW SMALL GROUPS that only comprised a few hundred people - _total_ - that left Africa and went on to populate the rest of the globe. Cultural continuity _and_ diversity exists within the African continent _at the same time._ There is more genetic diversity in the women of Africa than anywhere else and that's why every single genotype and phenotype found in _other_ human populations is found _in the WOMEN of AFRICA._ The history of humanity itself is largely the history of the women of Africa.

+veronicajade20 Yet many belittle Africans, especially the women, and try to make us feel less than human. How sad! They don't realize when they belittle us, they are belittling themselves:(
@veronicajade20
@veronicajade20 8 лет назад
Sally G "They don't realize when they belittle us, they are belittling themselves" They're insecure liars who've been fabricating "facts" about the ancient peoples and civilizations of humanity for so long that some of them even have the audacity to believe their own lies. It's bad enough to lie, but it's worse to _actually_ believe your own stupid lies. It's pathetic.
@sallyg2674
@sallyg2674 8 лет назад
So true. Some are so close-minded they can't see beyond what is in front of them and see the big picture and its implication. Just to share, the other day I was having an argument with this person on youtube (s/he removed his/her comments or something - it's not there anymore) and this person had the audacity to say "no one likes black women" because they are not considered beautiful.

I LOVE THIS! and thank you so much for pointing out how people only think of poverty when they hear ethiopia, when there's SO MUCH MORE. And thank you for also talking about how ethiopian women are always referred to as "light-skinned" with "striaght hair" and "straight noses" -- like the most caucasian african country, as if we're not really african. Well in reality, we are the FIRST africans, and you cannot get any more african than us! And not all ethiopians fit that stereotype -- my hair sure doesn't look like the stereotypical straight ethiopian hair! THANK YOU AGAIN OMGG
@lovelyflower2594
@lovelyflower2594 8 лет назад
No one actually thinks Ethiopians have straight hair it's just the trend to straighten your hair now. And people come in all colours really. Very unique and beautiful diversity in Ethiopia.
@ferretyluv

+lilypippili Well it's because Ethiopians are more Semitic. They look different from the rest of Africa. It's a unique country. They do have lighter skin than most Africans. Look at the model! She has light skin!

Ok, time to point out some historical inaccuracies - the battle of Adwa was not a fight for independence. To fight for independence , first that country has to be colonized or be under the yoke of oppression of foreign power. In the battle of Adwa, the Ethiopian Empire defeated and repelled an aggressor european country, that has no business being there. Also that picture of Empress Tayitu is from 1870's or 1880's not 1910's. Also @1:10 minutes there was a mentioning of Empress Menen as being wife of Emperor Menielik. That would be incorrect, she was wife of Emperor Haileselassie. It was Taitu that was Emperor Menielik's wife. The third woman on the Motor cycle was just a propaganda picture taken by a visitor from Europe. Also, for your 1980's look the lady that inspired the style presented was Yeharerwerk Gashaw. She was the first Ethiopian international model. She was a Pan-Africanist and an Activist who did her part to put Ethiopia and Africa in general in good light. She could be googled well.

So glad to see that the approach is based on the understanding that Africa is incredibly diverse. So many times people refer to Africa as though its one homogeneous country when in fact it's a continent made up of many countries of wide stretching diversities. So many points were touched on here. Very well done!

I love the research video follow up more than the 100 heats videos themselves! it's so great to unpack the historical context behind fashion, otherwise, every decade is just vaguely the same internationally. but looking closer, economically, it's all so dependent on social, cultural, economic, religious, political climates.
