I've got 1754 books in my house. That was a count from 3 years ago. (Not including the attic) I'll recount at some point but apparently I have a library?
I turned my 1500 book collection into a lending library in the small town where I live because we don't have any other library. Good to know it's officially a library! 🙌😁
Yeah, I had this virus of gathering books and bragging about it every time friends were visiting. But I was 15,and it was back in 2004, free epubs weren't a thing yet. Now I carry 2000 books in my kindle all over the place, and I love it, I genuinely think that having a library is a waste of time, money and space. Read it and delete it, best way to enjoy a book.
I'm the total opposite. I buy more books than I can read 😂 I really don't wanna read kindle. 1. Cuz it hurts my eyes 2. Cuz I prefer it to be physical and real 3. I like to see how far I've gotten by looking at the book 4. I like collecting stuff I guess, and it's satisfying to see my bookshelf grow

I feel like he doesn’t need a designated shopping spree just for the 57. He will probably naturally get them in a month. Consider it organic book shopping!
As a librarian I hope not. This will just spread weird misinformation. A library is not about the number of books, it's about the organization. A library describes a physical space housing a large group of books on multiple subjects, cataloged for easy reference and access. 150 books could be a library.

You know how much of a mind boggling thing that is to say to someone you literally read an entire library of books? Feels very unreal, but I bet someone's done it before
I grew up in a small town in Texas where they had the sections of the elementary library color coded by recommended grade, and we were only allowed to check out one book at a time. By the end of second grade the librarian was so tired of me coming in twice a day to check out a new book she let me get as many as I wanted from any section. We had Accelerated Reading tests on the computer for every book and the person with the highest points every 3 weeks got a gift card, that library ran out of books for me the next year 😆. So I would say it's probably more common than you think
@@theliar4558 yeah bc a library is minimum 1000books so if someone has that amount of books they might have read them all and have read a library thats alot of books but not as much as one of them public library's
Get these good dust collector staffs, the ones that actually work. In worst case, use a pressurized air spray, I use it for almost everything because it's so satisfying to see the dust go away.
You don't do that. You just embrace it, at my parents there hundreds, if not thousands, of books that haven't been touched in 20 years. I feel like it's better like that. Pick up a book and open it for the first time in decades is pretty exciting.
I had over 1300 books in my collection at one point. When I went abroad for education, my father sold them all at paper weight without asking me. Shit was heartbreaking.
before getting the 57 books I think it would be cool to get enough shelves to fit the library collection so when you get those last ones it's super satisfying to fill it all in and make it official.
I just randomly saw We Were Liars in one of the stacks, which reminded me it was one of my favorite books. So I’m rereading it now, thanks for the reminder :)
Libib is an app that allows you to scan bar codes or punch in ISBN of your books. You can organise them in collections or have them listed alphabetically. Its really handy if you have a lot of books and don’t want to accidentally buy some again, which has definitely happened to me before 🙃
@@drawingarts6424 I buy about 10 books a month which is obviously way more than I’m able to read, so sometimes I forget I’ve already bought a certain book I intended to read for a long time and actually have it at home already. So sometimes I buy a book two times a few months apart (yes, I’m an idiot)
I have moved multiple times, and suffered losses from water damage and a fire. I lose track of whether or not I have a particular book, and since I primarily shop second hand, if I don't get a book I want when I see it, there's no guarantee it will be there the next time I am in that shop. This app sounds like a great help to me!
Growing up I used to get a lot of books about animals, some were in depth about one animal and some were basic things about a wide variety of animals. I have over 200 books from that and when I got older I started reading non-fiction and fiction and cos I didn’t like going out I ended up with a lot of books. My current total of books is 1163 unless we count online books
@@sense0fpurpose I may be just one person and can't speak for anyone else, but I was born in '98 and I have roughly 144 books, thought I've definitely read more from the library or, more recently, e-books (because it's easier to get day-to-day and carry around).
I got curious while watching so I went and counted all of mine. I have about 145 not counting textbooks, I did count comic books though (141 without comics). Most are kids books though. I've definitely read more in my time just from the library so I don't actually own all the books I've ever read.
This Weekend I am going to change arrangements on my bookcases (last weekend I made/assemble 2 New one's and yesterday got idea how to put things on them) so that perfect opportunity to count my books 💜 I assume around 300, but half of them would be comic books and mangas. Also: I haven't really buy books recently, because I was saving for new furniture and didn't really have place to put books (some are in boxes/cloth bags in a lot of places in my tiny flat xD)
I actually counted mine! I estimated like 170, but I got 268 lmao. And my whole family together has 956 books in our apartment, not counting comics and the books i missed because they're hidden in ominous places. We're so damn close to having a library omg
My mom was like this with vinyl records for awhile, I think the highest count I got of her collection in the middle of her expansion was somewhere around 12k different individual records. Some are crazy rare while most are worth less than the raw materials to make them. This does give me a new goal for my bookshelves though, I want to be able to claim I have a proper library
We put up a Little Free Library when we moved to Utah 5 years ago, specifically to give away our 4000+ print books. It would have worked, too, except that we went from 85% donations from our own library the first year to 90% donations from the neighborhood last year. We still have over 5000 books on Kindle, though. And boxes of books that moved to Utah with us, in storage.
Sadly when we reach a stage where we are able to identify the joy in others easily, it simply means we ourselves are almost unable to do the same. Ignorance is bliss. But i guess there are still new experiences out there.
Okay, I'm always for not wasting paper, being kind to the environment, and keeping as much open unoccupied space for your personal feng shui as possible. On that note, 57 more books to go boy, make that library happen!!!
@@thursoberwick1948 I'm not sure if your aware but the extra eating requirement to house 1000 books (assuming you have an extra bedroom or large closet) plus the additional cabinets and shipping cost more than makes the phycal copies worse for the environment, especially compared to an eReader or low end tablet
@Trinity M Tablets run on electricity, either directly or from a battery. Battery manufacture is also a wasteful process. Some of them take more energy to make than they ever produce. Once a book is produced it stays around for decades. Unlike anything on ereader. I have books that are a hundred years old. But keep swallowing the ωεf propaganda.
@@thursoberwick1948 books are definitely a lot worse for the environment by a long shot, compared to the few mW used by an ebook reader (when you're not turning a page, it doesn't even use electricity). Pro tip, when possible, find books at thrift stores and used book stores, they’re way cheaper, and sometimes they have hilarious notes in them. Not to mention that you never know what you’re going to find, and finding the classics is usually not too difficult

@@ducklingscap897 i think "books that cover a variety of subjects/genres" is a much more difficult benchmark to cross than a 1000 books so thats interesting
There are so many apps that can help you keep track of how many books you own. So you don't have to count by hand and also have the added benefit of not accidentally buying two copies.
I use one called Storygraph. It gives me the benefit of not only keeping track of the books I have, but also of those I want. And it also shows me possible trigger warnings and general stuff like pacing, is the story more plot or character driven, the overall tone of the story, etc. so it's also really useful to look the books I want up there beforehand
If someone is so out of touch with their own books that they accidentally buy the same one twice, maybe they should considere donating a part of their collection
I am not the only one who would IMMEDIATELY run to a bookstore, or jump online, to upgrade my books to a library. I had a library, but did not know it at the time. When I moved, I donated all but some favorites and expensive reference books that I would continue to use, to a couple of hospitals who were excited, introduced me to the volunteer who oversaw the book carts. She promised me that they would take as long as a week to go through the books to remove objectionable books (porn, hate) and then they would go out to rotation. I am confident that they did so am okay with my decision. Now, I have about 25-30 books and I continue to use them all and have bought a handful of new ones. If it was not for online digital libraries, though, I would be struggling!

Apparently, Jack, your dedication to books has me feeling some type of way. It is my ambition to read 1000 books in ten years. I am nearly on my third year of the challenge since I became a reader after Covid for fun, and have read around 300 books so far since starting. My family laughs when I say i'm going to the library and say to me, "you haven't read the library yet? They will be out of books for you before you know it!" I just reply, "not yet, but I'm on my way!" One day I will say I have read a library and affirm I am completely serious. After all there is so much to experience and connect with and learn from and just enough time to seek out the ones that you love and are meant for you. You become apart of them and they never leave you. I will eventually be able to say I am a reader who has lived a thousand lives. How beautiful to be true. 1000 stories, here I come!
I'm a recovering addictive reader who averaged 4-6 novels a day (between 200 and 500 pages each) as a teen, so I know I've read 1,000 but since most of them were library books and I live on the other side of the country now, it'd be a pain to try to list them all.
A library is not about the number of books, it's about the organization. A library describes a physical space housing a large group of books on multiple subjects, cataloged for easy reference and access. 150 books could be a library.
I’ve got around 600 and it takes up one half of our home library, my dad has the other 600 and we each have our own wall. I worked at a thrift store in a university town while in school so I got to take a ton of books home for free. Sometimes professors would pass away and their entire collection would be donated. Because of that I have texts from as far back as the 1700s
I went to a panel where Dave Eggars was talking about his book, "The Circle." I had borrowed my local library copy and asked him to sign it. He wrote, "Never write in library books." 😂
No I think most put them in those plastic bins and seal them up to make sure they don't grow mold or something just like he showed earlier because eventually you will run out of shelves but bins can hold a ton of books but I am actually not sure what they do since I do not own a big book collection but that is what I did with my old video games for GameCube and stuff I just have them stored in those plastic bins as for books or stories I mean I only read online it is easier to find a story again on there and probably easier then those with big book collections having to look through their shelves to find the one book they were looking for again while when you are on Ao3 you just have to go to bookmarks and hit filter by notes it usually shows me the ones I wrote notes on which I do to show what Chapter I left off on anyway sorry for going off topic I probably forgot to answer the original question and sorry for the long message.
I mean, I'll just go over and look at my books every now and then. Whenever I'm looking for a new one I drag it out as long as possible holding the books, smelling them , imagining reading them. 😂 I love books 🤣 I'll lend them occasionally too and either my kids can have my books or I'll donate them. Right now I just enjoy owning them though so.
It depends on how much they read, tbh. I have somewhere over 500 books and I used to read through all of them every 1.5 years or so. Of course I've got faves that I read more often, and some least favourites get relegated to a box, then taken back out a few years later. Ones I end up hating get given back to the used book store for credit!
My plan is having my bed in my library when I get old, and then die surrounded by books. And my family if they want to keep me company in my last houers. 😁
My grandfather's collection was definitely a library. Their house had bookshelves in every single wall, and 4 to 6 double sides library shelves on his patio.
This would have been a great opportunity to mark books as owned on storygraph or begin an elaborate spreadsheet. If this had been me, I would have ended up not leaving the house in weeks. Thank goodness I am an ebook person so I can simply be overenthusiastic about calibre.
I just went and counted mine. I think I have 385. It’s funny how you start to remember more and more places there are books. Like first I got the 232 in my bedroom, and figured I’d go get the shelf upstairs and that’s it. On the way, I remembered some on a shelf in the hallway and the one in my living room. Then I got the ones upstairs, thought 301 was my total, and then remembered my hidden bookshelf where I keep things I don’t want my parents to see when they come over, and then that brought me to 371, and then I decided to go check the cabinets in my laundry room, and I was surprised to find another 13 books. Then I went through some boxes and found 1 final book, which I forgot I was halfway through reading when I moved, still with an envelope shoved in as a bookmark. There’s probably a few more at least somewhere I missed.
Start with ebooks from Z library and if you like a book you can buy one (physical hard cover) or continue with it, that's how I started my journey with reading books and trust me you don't need to read every single letter you can have your own type of reading. Don't let your special disability to let you down let it encourage you to work more.
I have around 300 on my own, but there is a lot of old encyclopedias, and books that my parents bought over the years, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was over 1000. We have like half of a wall covered in their books, and I have two shelfs for my books.
Just curious what are most of the books in your collection about like do you like a certain genre and how many of the books in your collection have you actually got around to reading since I know it is sometimes hard to find free time to read as well especially with work sometimes or other daily life stuff.
Now I'm so curious to see how many I have (probably in the hundreds but not more than that tbh) That said, I really want to see you reach those 1000, it would be very fitting (and slightly comedic)
If I had as many books in my house as he does I would have to move out cause I wouldn't be able to fit in there lol (I live in a small studio). That being said, I love reading and I love his videos❤️
I would say that if you have a room (or more than one) that exists primarily to store books, that's a library. Saying that you need a certain number of books to count as a library is like saying you need a certain number of plates to have a dining room.
I gave up buying books when I was a kid due to lack of funds and space. Most of my reading is now from online or the public or school libraries. It's nice to see this regardless.
Oh we never counted ours, but between my parents, my brother and me, when we lived together, we had definitely more than 1000 books. But yeah, we also thought we had a library. Hard work, when we moved, since we sadly had to let go of so many, since we just didn't have enough space anymore.
I like this fact because that means I've read technically like 10 libraries worth of books kind of The average book is about 70,000 words so taking an account some of the really long books and web serials I've read you know but then if you look at conversion from the average book size to the number words then it's like 10, 00 14,000 something like that
I had this problem before; books under the bed, in the closet, on every shelf. I kept about 50 but I had to get rid of most of them because I got roaches and the roaches were bedding in the books. It was a sad day.
My husband and I collect books. We stopped tracking them about 3 years ago, but back then, we had over 2,500. I remember squeezing them all into a tiny one bedroom apartment. Now we live in a house and have room to breathe.
