Installation of a 1000 Gallon rain barrel collection system in Minnesota. Still photos and a few video clips of the project as it progressed. Next season there will be a solar pump, overflow and a leaf filter installed.
Paul Russ, chaining 55 gallon barrels is less expensive than a single 1000 gallon tank. Used food grade 55 gallon drums can be found from $15-20 each. Hooking them together costs less than 2 bucks each. Total for 1000 gallon storage in barrels, approximately $350. A 1000 gallon tank costs $800-1000. The tank looks great, but some have to make do with less. No need to call it stupid.
We typically see the tank refilled every 3 weeks in the summer, with average rain. The garden it supports is about 50X50. There is about 5' of elevation from the base of the tank to the garden.
@whatinspiresu We put out 200+ feet of regular garden hose and we also use a splitter on the 1 1/2 inch outlet for a second hose. There is always enough pressure to move the water wherever we need.
Nice Job! Is a 1000 gallons enough to support your garden? I know that is a variable question but I'm setting one up also and just wondering how many tanks I should use.
You and I have the same system. I can fill my 1550 gallon tank with 1.2 inches of rain off my pole barn. My base is almost identical, but I used available pea gravel. I don't get these folks linking a bunch of 55 gal. barrels. Kinda dumb......in my opinion, which I'm entitled. I flush mine to begin the new year and have used up to 300 ft. of garden hose to water. I use a small electrical pump to speed up things but wouldn't have too.
