After a lengthy set back, we finally get the primary back together for more testing. We decided to try the Gates Poly Chain Belt system.
After some test runs with full throttle, the primary drive seems to be holding up. However we constantly had issues with Vibration, and it seems this is our next challenge.

Yes! Basically it's only an in & out box, we may have to change gearing for each event. On most hills there 's no advantage to shift gears. Now that we know we can put the power to the ground, we're making a few changes before we actually run it in a hill climb. Hopefully we can make at least one event this year.

Amazing, maybe for your events you dont really need more speed dont you? I dont know but you have enough power to keep that for longer gear, only 1 but longer maybe

the motor is from a snowmobile and they dont have gears. the smartest thing op could have done is use a cvt. they can handle some impressive power and has infinite gears to keep motor in its powerband. instead of over rev the motor to go 10 mph to "climb" a hill. they will need more speed for the approach or will never make it to the top. cvt will give them infinite first gear and whatever other gears they would need to balance speed and power output.

Thanks for your comment & encouragement! We have installed & run a Mercury Balanced Flywheel on the engine and that seems to smooth out the vibration problem. However we decided to redesign the mounting system for the Motor & Trans. Another update video is in the works.

Yes cold, plus other issues in this video we're just experimenting with the drive belt, and just beginning to tune the motor. From here we're working on clutch, fuel and electrical issues, which we feel we have fixed for the most part. Still got some more odds & ends we want to clean up and testing, before we actually run it balls out on a hill. Here's a link to our latest test runs. ( ru-vid.com?o=U&video_id=bufzPMsyAls ) JFYI - On this last run it ran at 600 F. in the beginning, but by the end it was at 1000 F.+.

It sounds almost like a jetting issue on the top end. Changing main jets would remedy this. Of course, it may be fuel injected, so if that's the case then ignore my stupid question.

Yeh! But there's been a lot more issues, Wiring, Clutch Balancing & slippage. Seems we got wiring worked out, and most of the fuel issues. Still working on the clutch.

artic cat 1000cc.... is this it ? Arctic Cat took top honors when they introduced the 162-horse 900 Thundercat with triple pipes and then upped the ante with a 172-hp 1000cc version. Performance seekers soon had the 1000cc triple producing more than 200 horses. ???? 170 to 200hp ????

Well THX for your interest. We have run two hill climbs with it. Although we were successful on the first run at Fordville hill climb (even with the clutch slipping), the belt broke on the second attempt. did some more mods to it, then in Billings we got to the wall and the clutch was still slipping so bad we had to shut er down. Taking a break for a while.

That tension/idler pulley is on the wrong side of the belt. Assuming the engine is turning clockwise. Might wanna fix that 😉

I had a 07 F1000 sled.. put full exhaust on it and had fuel problems and also had power commander V with the wideband o2 sensor in the pipe and still could never get the fuel right.. sounded just like this and was fouling only one side and gas mileage was only about 7mpg (i know the engine is a pig but it should be at around 10mpg lol) but I ended up removing the pipe and putting stock pipe back on and it ran great (still had Y-pipe and silencer on) also do you have an aftermarket Y-pipe? It added (what seemed like) a bunch of torque and power for only like 100$ at the time.. hope everything is running better now!

sounds and looks like just go through the gears( more gears) or smaller rear wheel(less teeth) sprocket. engine sounds good at the bottom and midrange! juat sayin

First of you are my idol for even attempting this project. Secondly on the top end it sounds like a lot of miss matched port timing. Or a CDI that's signing off way early. You tell me, am I right? You would know better than I would.

Thanks ! And yes there seems to be a problem with the tuning. Myself, I'm a 4 stroke guy & not too knowledgeable with the 2 strokes. My son has taken on the task of tuning this motor and we have tore down the top end. Although the pistons & rings were within Specs, we have replaced them with new ones. He also has been working on a electronic tuning device with sensors in each pipe which should allow him to tune each cylinder to the pipes.

Are these 2 separate engines? Using the same CDI with the same ignition curve as when they were arctic cats? Two strokes are sensitive to 2 key areas: the shape of the transfer ports and the shape of the expansion chamber. Something has been changed significantly since these motors ran separately. Someone either 1.) hogged out (took a dremel to the transfer ports. or 2.) The exhaust pipes are shaped differently then what came on the arctic cat. or 3.) The CDI which determines the ignition advance curve has been changed. My guess is the Arctic Cat is a motor that comes from the factory with a very mild tuning. In other words I would think the arctic cat is designed to be dependable, easy to start and last awhile. These are qualities that come from small even transfer ports, smaller over all exhaust pipe and and a CDI with an ignition advance that starts tapering off fairly soon. When you son was at 3/4 throttle the motor just blubbered. 2 strokes like any motor depends on ignition timing, but exclusive to the 2 stroke is that that the ignition timing must match the transfer port timing. IF THESE TWO THINGS HAVEN'T BEEN CHANGED then the problem is with jetting or exhaust. Have him start with a new plug then wild the motor to over 3/4 throttle then shut off. What is happening to the top end will be seen NOT AT THE TIP of the plug but way down towards the center.

No this is a stock 2008 Arctic Cat LXR 1000cc M1 twin engine with 1400 miles. We picked up the whole sled at from a insurance auction. It already showed signs of fuel problems when we got it, as there was Raw fuel & oil leaking from the header pipe connection. We're using the stock CDI with a commander control & I believe vacuum controlled power ports. The exhaust was changed from single to dual, & designed for mid to high range power by NPP in Edmonton Alberta. So we kinda figured on having to do some adjustments. Thanks for all & any information you have given or can advise us on.

Guck, fuel and oil leaking from the exhaust header tells you nothing. They all do that. I would like to see the stock exhaust. I'd like to see the difference between the single and the dual. So far everything indicates that as being the most likely suspect. The exhaust pipe on a 2 stroke is so critical its easy to make a mistake. That motor depends on the pipe to send a sound wave back to act as a closing exhaust valve. Changing the shape of the pipe is like changing lobe and duration on a camshaft and the size of the exhaust valve. The shape of the pipe determines all those things.

I know some R&D guys from Yamaha that always wanted to adapt that brilliant snow mobile pulley system into a motorcycle instead of a transmission. Those pulleys that change ratio that is really clever.

PS. sounds like combustion problem... possible pipe ? or Reed valves ?? I'm no macanic my kx 500 did that and it was the Reed's. to much gas and not enough back pressure on the Reed's. just an hopefully helpful seggeston..

We're working on it. Thanks for the suggestions. We have torn down the top end. and have replaced them with new ones. Also have a new electronic tuning device with sensors in each pipe which should allow us to tune each cylinder to the pipes. Good to know about the reed valve problem and we'll check them also.

From looking at the data from the sensors you say are in the exhaust what would those senors help you adjust. You're definitely on to something there Kivich. Do you recall how Team Honda use to dial in their 2 stroke GP motors? Through water injection into the exhaust. Water injection fools the motor into producing the same results you would get from changing the shape of the exhaust pipe. To a 2 stroke motor-with no exhaust valve-changing the shape of the pipe is equivalent to changing the size of exhaust valve and the lobe & duration on the camshaft on a car motor. Because the size of the expansion chamber and distance it is from the piston determines when that reverberating sound wave will bounce back and do the job of a closing exhaust valve.

Very interesting theories Mike! My understanding is: That these exhaust sensors read the pipe temperature around 8" from the head, which will indicate whether more or less fuel is required. I would think it's like taking a plug reading, but more accurate.

Your pulley setup is all wrong .You have to move the idler pulley to the underside. The load side of the belt should be straight .Put tension on return side of belt . This will make a huge difference .

Not that I know of! We made our own gear box for this build, and it only has one gear. (In or Out) The purpose is to allow us to warm up the engine to temp. Once it's warm we can shift it into gear and make our run. We intend to gear it with the drive sprockets, to each particular event.

The belt tension pulley is on the slack side of the belt. It's hard to see in the video but, I believe your not realizing that the motor turns counter clockwise. take a better look!

We're going to find out soon. We just finished checking the top end, and have made some changes to the motor mounts to try and help with the vibration problem. Hopefully this along with the Mercury Balancer, will clear up the vibration problem.

It's exhaust wrap, designed to keep heat in the exhaust pipe for better performance; and in this case, gives the rider some protection from the hot pipes. CHEERS!

Yes there is! We used Half of a CR500 Rad. With such little room we mounted it up high just behind the steering head. If you check some of our other video's, you should be able to pick it out. We are also running coolant through the upper frame.

The pipe is built for mid range torque @ 7800 rpm. tops, and it acts like a rev limiter. That was the plan from the beginning, and will be geared for each event.

Why so rude? It's been made into an automatic. You can either tune it to obtain a higher top speed, or to get acceleration/torque. Cylinder capacity doesn't have to say anything about speed. Like you say, a 250cc can be faster than a 1000cc. Let me explain with an Arctic Cat dirt bike. With motorcycles which have a drive belt (or variator) you can achieve a high top speed but this will cost you acceleration. Vice versa goes if you want lots of torque/acceleration. It's either a high top/low torque, low top/high torque or a balance between both of them. Given the fact that this is a 2 stroke, it doesn't have much power at low RPM's. Source: I work on 2/4 stroke motorcycles ranging from 50 to 1000cc. Now kindly fuck off with your "shit argument" as how you'd like to call this. Also. Don't criticize my English if I made any mistakes, I'm foreign.

Ya! I guess it looks that way. But the clutch is slipping terribly at this time. We worked on it for quit some time. Got it to grip better, but it still wasn't enough. It will need a new Clutch & Trans set up. We have a plan. Just not feasible at this time. Maybe destine for a museum.
