I have a question- Why would someone use smaller bags vs larger vertical hanging bags? Wouldnt the larger elongated bags give you more mushrooms and higher profitability? Thanks
@ImMizerD
@ImMizerD 5 лет назад
This is something I have been wondering myself. From what I can gather the answer would be yes. Greater yields. However the process becomes more labour intensive, therefore smaller bags can be turned over faster and with less manpower.
@MyersMushroomsFarms
@MyersMushroomsFarms 5 лет назад
handling the bags at 12 lbs each is already labor intensive, yes 30 lb bags might be less proccessing but when its all manual it wears you down. European farms grow on 30+ lb plastic wrapped bales but the block production is automated.

Your comment got me curious so I began looking into it. According to MassFoodAndWine Brad's location was ruined just five months after this video was posted after a fire broke out going on to say "While the actual fire ... did not cause significant damage, the resulting water [from the sprinkler system] devastated the entire inventory of mushrooms, which the board of health required to be disposed of. The damage to the lab and mill space was bad enough that Brad will need to tear out his entire operations and look for a new home." I then found an article on Telegram dated August of 2019 that said "Wildwood Mushrooms ... has purchased land on T Hall Road for $30,000, and plans to build a mushroom growing facility." and "Brad Allain said he expects the facility, which will not be open to the public, to open in the spring [of 2020]." And according to LinkedIn a man is showing as a "Corporate Development Business - Advisor" for Wildwood Mushroom and has held that title since 2018 through Present day.

@NotSoCrazyNinja
@NotSoCrazyNinja 4 года назад
An estimation, if he sells for $10/lb that is about $3000 a week. However, have to factor in warehouse rent (in this case, maybe 1-2K a month), utilities (maybe another 1-2K a month), supply expenses (bags, substrate, spawn, etc), labor (how much is your time worth?), taxes (the government wants their cut), pay for workers if you have any (let's face it, you're not going to want to work seven days a week every week for the rest of your life), insurance if you have workers, insurance for the grow (crap happens), transportation (if you deliver as well as transport needed to bring supplies in), loss (product you can't or don't sell, product that doesn't grow), etc etc. You also have to worry about unexpected loss such as a massive infestation of a pest that might ruin an entire month or two while you deal with it and recover) Maybe 4-8K net a month with this setup if you maximize growth and sales with minimal waste, but it can vary. This is an estimation. With my planned setup, I might net $1k a month but I plan to do my setup mostly to learn. Any profit will be a bonus.

Oy, super uncomfortable watching this from a business standpoint. Now two years later how effective and profitable is this business actually? I hope well, but I see lots of red flags. I say this from the standpoint that it looks like someone is just trying to throw money into equipment and one-on-one consulting and hoping that’s enough. I’ve watched enough people get excited about a business, then buy all new equipment and tech-automation at high cost and rent warehouse space, only to close a couple years later and sell all equipment at wholesale cheap prices to another, often more financially savvy, mushroom farmer. An innovative mushroom cultivator can produce the same amount of bags this person references in the video per week (about 120) without renting commercial space or buying tons of expensive equipment new-speaking from very real experience . . . experience failing at and being profitable with gourmet and medicinal fungi over my career. Some of the hardest parts of being a mushroom farmer have nothing to do with daily work flow and automation and have everything to do with market fit, bookkeeping, and entrepreneurial creativity.

It's an ok income, but after expenses I presume it to be fairly low (I probably make more at my day job which isn't even full-time lol). To make it work you would have to sell a lot of retail. With the right local marketing, you could build a following of customers paying retail. During downtime, with that mixer, you could probably sell blocks too. If you find the right farmer(s)/gardener(s)/marketing you could sell all your spent blocks for composting. If you automate things enough and have a good workflow layout, you can reduce the number of hours needed to run the operation. I plan to begin some small-scale shiitake growing just to learn and see what kind of market is in my area. I'm just going to use a space 16x16 room I have and see what I can get out of it. I have a lot of free time at the moment so might as well try to turn it into some money. My big problem is finding customers. Not many high-end restaurants within 50 miles of me. Driving a hundred miles to deliver ten pounds of mushrooms isn't profitable. I'm not going the industrial route like in this video, I'm just going to go cheap and primitive and not sacrifice end-product quality.
@PoulJulle-wb9iu
@PoulJulle-wb9iu 4 года назад
@@NotSoCrazyNinja that would be an interesting journey indeed, wish you the best of luck. I was pondering doing the same.
@NotSoCrazyNinja
@NotSoCrazyNinja 4 года назад
@@PoulJulle-wb9iu If you keep initial expenses low and opt for more labor, you can get a better idea if it is something you want to do. For example, the substrate. You "could" get literal tons of the core ingredients trucked to you for pretty cheap per pound, but, if you're just starting out, might be better to go to a feed store, farm store, or similar and just pay a little extra for smaller bags of it. Instead of spending a grand or few on a mixer, a stock watering container or other large container with a spade/shovel/hoe would work too. For a sterilizer, I plan to build my own out of mostly wood (probably cypress based on what is available and not too expensive in my area) and use electric water heating element(s) with a controller and float. For "bags", I have a crazy idea I want to try. If it works, I might can do away with disposable bags and just have to do a little more sterilizing. I estimate I can get away with a new startup for a couple hundred or so dollars. Then just work it in my free time and see what I get. Initial stages I'll probably just give away the mushrooms to people I know while I learn how best to grow them and get a better idea on timing. Once things are settled and if I want to keep doing it, then I'll begin trying to sell them. Based on the laws in my state, so long as I sell them "whole" and "fresh", there's no licensing I have to worry about if I keep sales within my state. Just have to worry about sales taxes.

That's like 130 kilogram. A kilogram does like 12 euro, max, on the Dutch market. So, if I subtract taxes, costs, what the supermarket takes, or any trade organisation. Then I am a champion if I keep 3 euro a kilogram in my hands, profit. So, what's the point of this? Has to be a ten times production a week to make it interesting.
