My world's biggest thanks and blessings to Prof. Hajimiri for these clear-voice-recorded videos. My life has nothing to do with electronics and I am 40. These eye-opening lectures changed my life. (from a jobless man in S. Korea)

Professor Hajimiri you are the best. I watched the whole series of lectures you made on circuits and they were enlightening. Now as my course in Electronics approaches next year I see you have started uploading new high quality versions of Analog Circuit Design. You and professor Razavi are my favorite Electrical Engineers. God bless you and keep the lectures coming :)

Same here. I started looking for some video on Shot Noise after some reading from Simon Haykin and I found Prof Hajimiri video and I was awestruck with the simple explanation and explanation by random variables. Then I previewed the lecture series of Analog circuits. I am already fan of Prof. Razavi Eletronics series and his teaching art, Prof Hajimiri way of relating things made me his fan. Thank you Pro. You guys are not engineers you are poets! The main unsolved problem for me is that I don't know which one of you is which! all i know is that i love electronics. thank you thank you thank you. From Mashhad. Love you so much. PS: I hope you keep recording your lectures for us.

Greetings from the Philippines !!! Thank you very much Prof. Hajiimiri. Your lectures are very enlightening and insightful. I like your approach in emphasizing the thought process that went behind the circuit, emphasizing more on the (reusable) concepts (like lego pieces as you frequently mention) needed to come up with more complex circuits. It made me realize that a schematic should be viewed better (not as interconnection of devices but) as logical interconnection of concepts (lego pieces). You also encourage your students to practice critical thinking by asking them challenging questions and encouraging them to ask questions. This way they are more involved in your classes. I hope you inspire more professors around the world to follow your style in teaching. You just don't teach, you also empower by emphasizing on the dynamics of analysis and problem solving. You and Prof. Razavi are an inpiration to me. God bless you Sir !!!

As a computer science and technology major graduate, I suffered from my undergraduate education in mainland China. We never even mentioned the concept of resistivity in our whole program, not to mention most important basic concepts like operational amplifier were left unclear. The textbooks were created by graduate students of the author printed on the books, who might not know not more than some undergrad and just throw you a bunch of charts copied from who knows where and doesn’t explain anything. The “professors” just read through the ppt accompanying the textbook all through the classes. Then everyone pretends they did their job.

The best way to identify a piece of diamond is to put in your tongue. If it feels like ice then it is diamond. This is because of the high thermal conductivity it takes away the heat from the tongue that it feels cold where the diamond touches. Other than Carbon, Silicon and Germanium all crystallizes in a diamond lattice and are good semiconductors. GaAs also have similar atomic arrangement like the others but it is diatomic with a two atom basis and has Zinc blende structure. GaAs semiconductor has many great advantageous properties but not ubiquitous in the industry due to the chemistry of GaAs which makes them not stable and robust like Silicon.

1. Sir why are you considering electrons in Conduction bands to be free electron? Is energy of conduction band positive? Otherwise how can electron be free in conduction band? 2. When we brings the atoms close to each other, the energy level forms energy band. But how it is possible with integer value of n ?

I've been watching some of circuits and systems lectures and I see they end at 39. The ones in analog circuit design start at 101. I'm just wondering about the ones from 40-100. What do they cover ?

Thanks for the great lecture! It will be great if you can clear the following doubts. 1. Why are things quantized only when the total energy is negative? 2. Will there be holes in metals too? The example band diagram that you wrote didn't show it. If not, why?
@AliHajimiriChannel
@AliHajimiriChannel 5 лет назад
1. Well, the quantization is an artifact of having finite boundary conditions on the wave equation, which is also related to the boundedness of the energy. An unbounded electron can assume any energy because there is no boundary condition on the wave equations. This is an artifact of the wave nature of the matter (the same way that a standing wave can form on a guitar string exciting only certain frequencies). 2. This really depends on the exact energy band diagram of the metal in question in the most general case.

Hi, Sir thank for such a great explanation. Just for the shake curiosity, I have a question could electron can ever get the positive energy level, I mean As per equation it can never gain positive energy level no matter whatever value ''n'' could take.
@AliHajimiriChannel
@AliHajimiriChannel 5 лет назад
Yes, they can. That would be a free electron not attached to an atom (or a crystal lattice). The reason the equation does not show it, is that the bound electron is assumed in the derivation of the equation, namely, when we assume a standing De Broglie wave forming the orbit. Hope this helps.
@JK_ZaruriTohNahin
@JK_ZaruriTohNahin 5 лет назад
@@AliHajimiriChannel Thank you so much, sir, for your quick response. So sir again the question arises that what equations can describe the energy of the free electron and before that to get an estimation of the energy of these free electron we first need to know the position of these electrons right sir so how we predict that. Could u please comment on this.

52:15 - Why will electron become a free electron when it moves to the next energy level, why doesn't it fill the next energy level, that is still be a bounded electron?
@AliHajimiriChannel
@AliHajimiriChannel 5 лет назад
It is an electron moving in the conduction band. It is "free" in the sense that is can move around freely in the conduction band that has a lot of empty states, but not an unbounded electron.
