Amazing ! Thank you for this. I'm planning a trip with my Daughter we want to go to these sites in 2024 and learn the history take photos and experience the areas. Truly a part of history that soon will be forgotten. Thanks for keeping it alive. I hope to do the same.
Lots of hours spent editing I won’t lie! But I think it’s worthwhile to bring these stores and places to a wide audience! Thanks for taking the time to watch as it’s really appreciated!
I was in Carentan today and used your video as a guidance. It was really helpful to identify some of the areas where these guys fought. Thank you for your excellent work sir!
My heavens, Major Winters, beautiful man, you did this at 26! Or 25 if your birthday was later in the year. And most of us today need until 30 to “find ourselves” . . . . the greatest generation indeed.
It makes me think and love my dad more and more. I would love to walk were he did, but I'm in a chair with issues. Loved listening to him. Smartest mofo in the world. Love dad. Thanks so much what you've done in the world
Hello John. A fantastic video showing "then & now" photographs. I'm surprised just how much remains from 1944. What brave men the 101st were. I guess being repatriated back to the UK after this battle was very welcome.
It’s incredible isn’t it given how much shelving the place took in mid June but fortunately most that did get hit seems to have been rebuilt in the original style in the centre of the town
Une reconnaissance éternelle pour ces jeunes soldats américains et alliés morts pour la liberté de l’Europe. Leur mémoire reste gravée dans nos cœurs. De véritables héros qui ont tout sacrifié pour notre avenir en perdant le leur. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💞💞💞🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷👍👍👍 An eternal gratitude for these young American soldiers and allies who died for the freedom of Europe. Their memory remains engraved in our hearts. True heroes who sacrificed everything for our future by losing theirs.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💞💞💞🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷👍👍👍
Hi John, Really grateful I found your fascinating channel, the depth of your knowledge amazes me. Just checking, I sent you an email couple of weeks ago re the 2nd Warwicks. A relative of my wife, Thomas Wagstaff from Bolton was in the 2nd Warwicks and tragically killed 13th August 1944. Just to make sure the email has not been diverted to your trash. There's certainly no rush to reply, I realise the effort you put into this is so time consuming. Take care. RIP to all those heroes.
Hi Jon Thanks for sharing another great video! Caretan looks to be such a beautiful old town with its buildings that were mostly saved from the war. It’s fantastic that they have kept their heritage alive and tried to keep the same appearance with the post war renovations and rebuilding. Keep up the good work brother ❤😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Carentan is a wonderful place to visit and very much key to the 101st Airborne’s story so I always enjoy visiting there, and fortunately I got lucky with the weather so could show the place off nicely!
Great video! Thanks for sharing! I really like looking at the old war photos. It's fascinating comparing the old photos with present day and how little has changed in some places and how things have changed more in other areas. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work! Much appreciated!
I must admit I’ve only recently come across your channel. I have a huge interest in places such as Bastogne, Foy, Brecourt Manor etc. Just want to say what an absolute joy it is to sit and watch through your channel. No crap just great informative and captivating content. Really allows you to escape and learn something’s along the way. Look forward to much more. Ps. I wish you had hoodies to purchase :) take care
Thank you! I’ve got lots to come from my current trip to Normandy as well so be prepared for that!! I do plan on having hoodies at some point, it’s just been a crazy year for me so far with my day job and moving house so it’s on the list of things to do! Thanks again!
@@WW2Wayfinder really look forward to seeing your current travels. Yeah completely understand, fair play for doing this along side a day job thats pretty impressive! Great stuff i shall keep an eye out and will certainly get one on order when available. Take care!
another great video. i did the whole Normandy thing a few yrs ago. couldn't take advantage of the walking around seeing sites like you did because it was raining sideways. miserable weather. hell, thought i was back in the infantry.
Thank you! Sadly Normandy weather can be a real pain in the backside when it wants to be! I was there in April one year and enjoyed snow of all thing!!! Hope the episode was able to show you some of the spots there you weren’t able to see when you visited, and I’ll have a lot more from various locations in Normandy coming up over the next few weeks!
It receives little attention from what I’ve seen so really pleased I had time to fit it into the video and the memorial to Major Tucker is fantastic, and a credit to his memory and to those who took the time to place it there.
Thank you Shawn! Getting there fortunately thanks to the amazing medics at the hospital! Can’t thank those people enough for helping my sorry backside!
Im thown off with the then and now pics because the amount of cars in the now pictures. In 1944 there werent cars like they are now taking space in the streets
I’ve just visited Carentan and was able to find some comparison shots but not as many as you. Looks like I’m going to have to go back ! Well Done another Excellent video 👍🏻👏🏻
Great you’ve been able to see the town, and find some of the locations! It’s definitely an underrated location to walk around in terms of the 101st story. Plus there’s some great bars and places to eat by the marina! Thanks for watching 😃
Carentan pojawiło się w wielu grach komputerowych osadzonych w czasach II wojny światowej, takich jak: Call of Duty i Call of Duty 2 w mapach do rozgrywki wieloosobowej[4]. Spotkać je można także w: Company of Heroes, R.U.S.E., Men of War, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood i Battlefield 1942 jako mapa "Bocage"
Thanks a lot sir, historis war with photo, very like same the building and location 😢much more blood when its time,🙏🙏Iam from Indonesia 👌apreciate your effort
@@WW2Wayfinder I realise you are a busy chap (needing some R'n'R!), but have you considered a wee series on the withdrawal/capture of the 51st Highland Division at St Valery en Caux?
Hey Jon, You sound like you've got some military experience with the way you refer to CQB etc. What's your background mate? Loving the videos by the way.
Some in a dim and distant past but nothing of any real interest! Glad you’re enjoying the videos, and I think you’ll really enjoy the next one I’ve got planned!
If I can raise funds for it I will. Currently 99% is funded by myself and it’s not cost effective to travel that far from the UK at present sadly but the desire is there for it. I’ve already got some episodes on the channel from Italy that I filmed this time last year
I appreciate the then and now template. And I really appreciate how the French keep things, like the buildings, the way they were originally. Not like in the U.S.A. where old buildings are torn down and replaced with these eyesores.
Agreed. It is nice to be able to visit these places and because of the buildings you can really feel the history and those who have gone before. Plus it makes my work that much easier for which I’m grateful!
Later next year I plan to feature much more British content on the channel, so keep an eye out! My Grandfather landed on Gold Beach on D-Day so I have a very personal connection with the British Army of WW2.
I’m glad you showed that paper about the June 13 German offensive . That was the date my father was wounded. The newspaper clipping about my dad being wounded says “somewhere outside Carenton.” That’s all I know.
Love your videos! My father-in-law flew B-17s out of Bury St Edmonds with the 94th bomb group and we appreciated what all those "kids" did to keep American and Europe free
Oh wow! That’s amazing, I know Rougham Airfield and the home of the 94th BG well! I grew up by the old USAAF bases slightly further inland in the UK so sparked my passion for all things USAAF as a kid. Have you been able to visit Bury St Edmunds and see where your Father flew from?
It's amazing that the country is so old that you find the exact place it shows us Americans the skills of European people to repair such damage to the almost exact places as they were then
Really enjoyable video, on Major tucker's memorial it said his brother was also killed in France, very sad the 2 brothers lost their lives so far from home in such a short space of time.
It’s tragic isn’t it when you hear of losses like that. Really brings home the human cost of the war and the unimaginable impact it must have had on their family!
QUEM falou que as pessoas não podem voltar ao passado???🤔 vendo essas fotos, até eu que não era Nascido em 1944. Fico vendo as fotos e por um instante é como se eu tivesse participado dessa guerra. 😊
Great Video as always, i do enjoy watching them! I would like to see if you're able to, to create some content on the British and Canadian battles that took place in Normandy and further inland, after all, there were more troops from those nations that landed on D-Day than the americans but it seems to be ignored or acknowledged by many the loses, sacrifices and battles won by those nations. I think it would make for great content that's not been covered to death already. I would't want your great channel to become a Holywood film company ignoring and airbrushing out all the other allied nations acheivements, as all we ever here about (not just you) is what the americans did. Keep up the great work, hopefully i get to see D-Day from a different angle from you real soon as i enjoy your filmaking! :-)
Don’t worry lots of British content to come and will feature heavily next year! And Canadian and Polish too! Got some (hopefully) very interesting episodes lined up that’ll cover areas not seen before 😃
Great video, a question, though,if I may. Do you cover many sites featuring British and Canadian operations? I only ask because due to the HBO series, they seem to be forgotten.
Check out my episode on Falaise and I have a whole itinerary of British episodes for next year planned, but since the early 90’s I’ve been passionate about the 101st so I do gravitate towards that Divisions actions. I also covered my Grandfathers landing on Gold Beach last year but will be looking to document his war with the infantry over the next 2/3 years 😃
I look forward to seeing them. I have been on three battlefield tours with Leger and enjoyed them all. It would be nice to have more time at the different sites and be able to see different ones. I did the Battle of the Bulge tour in 2017, I think, and at that time, we were able to visit Bois Jaques without paying admission. I agree with you that it is wrong to charge, though if it helps stop vandalism, it may have some plusses. There is a fantastic museum in Bastogne, in it you can experience an air raid coming over.
Thank you so much 😃 Next video 👉 Bloody Gulch 😏 I visited Carentan few months ago, like Sainte Mère Église, Brecourt Manor, Utah&Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc. All great places. I like to be there and I hope to leave in this area. I miss Normandie. In my town Auneau (France - Centre Val de Loire), we honor General Patton and the Third Army. There is a nice monument. When I see this monument, the picture of General Patton and the US flag flotting, I am so grateful. Thank you too Colonel Guy de la Vasselay (Maire d’Auneau-Bleury-Saint Symphorien) that made « la voie de la Liberté », it start at Ste Mère Église and the last milepost at Bastogne, but the first one was created in 1946 and it was in Saint Symphorien. Thank you USA and all allies 🙏
Got something good planned for next year with the Bloody Gulch so keep an eye out for that! Glad you’ve been able to visit the area yourself too, it’s a wonderful place to be!
Thank you for this upload, really appreciate your work. We have a home in Varenguebec, we believe that it was set up as a German field hospital during D-Day and possibly an airstrip until our troops cleared it out. Lots of bullet holes and shrapnel still evident in the old buildings around the village. There’s some footage of Italian soldiers being rounded up in the village also. (On RU-vid)
Fantastic! I know the area well! It’s a stunning part of Normandy so will have a look into that. The Boos are Limors certainly saw action as the 82nd were in that area later in June
Been here in 2018. The road D903 is where you spawn in the Call of Duty 1 game lol :D Carentan is a great town with lots of history! There are still bullets on the walls on some buildings! :)
Hope you have a great time there! Carentan is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours and I can definitely recommend the restaurants by the marina if you have time for food there!
People who want to see the other side of the truth may read "Du oder ich" from the author Jo Dahms who fought for the Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 6. And a lot of French people were liberated with the death for the bombs of the Americans and British. French historians proved that the bombing of French citiies were a criminal of war.
Oh wonderful! April is a nice time of the year to visit and it’ll be nice and quiet so you should be able to really take in all the sites! Hope you have a great trip, Normandy is such a special place!
i wonder if folks who never served in the infantry ever wonder why soldiers are always crapped out when they can be. there's an old infantry saying - "never stand if you can sit, never sit if you can lay down, and never stay awake if you can sleep." because you never know when the next chance to rest will come.
My father fought there at Carentan with 101st, 506th F company. He joined with the paratroopers at camp Toccoa, Georgia. Thank you showing the then and now photos. I am always looking at the solders faces hoping to see my father.
Have you read Fighting Fox Company: The Battling Flank of the Band of Brothers by Bill Brown & Terry Poyser? It's a wonderful book all about F Company and is on Amzon etc. If you're able to I'd highly recommend trying to get a copy!
I'm a late-comer to this one: don't know how I missed it 8 months ago. You had a few tough locations to marry up...and I wonder if you ever ask locals if they can help fix the current locations from your old photos. In any case, another great video....in relation to a battle location that I feel has been neglected by Historians of the post D-Day ETA.
Amazing work man😮.Yes and chance encounters are meant to be.I stopped an old guy in Dunkirk for directions to the beach evacuation site .Turned out he was doing Christian Charity work and lived 30 minutes from my home town.He jumped in my car and directed me to the exact spot at a memorial .😊
