101st on D-DAY: The Most FAMOUS Then & Now
The 101st had a Rendezvous with Destiny in Normandy and thankfully their role in D-Day was captured for all time by men of the US Signal Corps.
One of those photos is especially famous, and possibly one of the most famous photos taken of a 101st paratrooper in Normandy! That is the photo of Wilbur Shanklin, but where was it taken and what events surrounded that location during D-Day and the following days?
In this episode of WW2 Wayfinder, I take you to Turqueville, near Sainte Mere Eglise and explain the location, the battle there and the enemy the 101st were facing there!
I hope you enjoy the episode.

I find it amazing how these villages and towns of Normandy remain virtually unchanged in the 80 years since D-Day. The historical content of your presentation is quite remarkable. The intersection in the photo of the American soldier holding the surrendered German soldier remains unchanged. It's almost as if this village is lost in time. Simply put, your presentation puts us in Normandy on D-Day. Thank you for posting.

WWII Wayfinder never disappoints, always absorbing, informative, and progressing my knowledge and understanding of WWII from someone who clearly has a passion for the subject and shares it - fortunately for us. WWII Wayfinder, together with JD and SNAFU are, in my view, by far the three ultimate go-to sources re WWII for a genuinely rewarding presentation where you discover a previously unknown story relating to D-Day (or later), always clearly presented and deepening not just knowledge but appreciation of what took place.

I hope you have a wonderful trip when you retrun back there!!

Being that you love World War II history (appreciate you very much), you might really like a nostalgic radio station that streams 24:7 British Home Front Radio. It is available free streaming on the Internet and also on the TuneIn app. Wow do I love this radio station - it is hosted LIVE just like the radio our parents, grandparents, great grandparents used to listen to complete with bulletins, soundbites of the war, speeches by all our Allies, and even some German propaganda broadcasts. Even some homefront bulletins how to volunteer, how to grow vegetables in a garden, especially for vitamin C - did not know all the citrus was being sent to the front. All big band, swing, love songs. If any of us have WW II veterans in our family, or in [compassionate] facilities would probably love it. I am young and play it all day long in the background while I work. So refreshing from today’s rock, jazz, rap, emo, stressed out music. Super authentic. Relaxing.

To prevent the specific unit being identified. In a similar manner today with Special Forces having their faces blacked out in photos to prevent them as individuals being identified, it was done to a lot of units during WW2. Fortunately though the original photos were archived so it makes our job today that much easier to understand which units they belonged to!
