Presenting your products for sale is important. In this video, I show you how I use my trusty lightbox to take top-notch photos of wood turned items and other products for use online using just my phone.
Good photos are vitally important for communicating the visual form of products online. A clean background like the one used here ensures that the product is 'front and centre' in the shot and there is nothing for the viewers eye to be distracted by - perfect if your photos are going to be used for selling your items.
There are of course, other ways you can take product photos - lifestyle shots are good in certain places like magazines or boutique websites etc, but for the most part, a simple square format is good enough for most selling websites - and social media!
The technique I show here uses a very simple set up using a photography lightbox available from the link below. The video is not sponsored nor endorsed by the manufacturer.

That was very helpful thanks Martin. Ive a smaller version of the same box and tend to catch the side of the frame a lot in my photos, which i then have to crop out. Maybe the bigger box is the answer to that. Also Im going to switch to the grey background now as i didnt realise that the white was washing out the shadow. Thanks for the tips. 👍

Thanks Martin. I was looking for a lightbox for my turnings, was watching video reviews and who should appear but you! I was really settled on a different one but you sold me on this one for a number of reasons, 1, the movable lights. 2, you seem really happy with it and 3 you've been using it for 2 to 3 years and it seems to be working fine! Also, having watched a number of your turning videos I trust what you are saying. Also, a brilliant review in the sense of walking us through your set-up and use. Some great pointers and tips, Thanks.

Thank you for this video. I live in the U.S.A. and had to do a little sleuthing to find this for sale in our country (Amazon) but for those here in the U.S.A. this is the SAMTIAN 24" and the color is listed as the F60II. As of today's comment, it's listed at $98.63 but your mileage may vary. I think sometimes they tailor pricing to you. I can't verify that but...anyhow, thank you again this was a valuable video for me.

Hi Martin! Thanks for this lovely insight in your product photography. Never considered using a grey background, but I may have to switch to it… looks awesome for items that aren‘t „flashy“. And I’ll have to adjust the placement of my light bars, too! I‘ve got an old iPhone that is not as suitable as yours seems to be for product shots so I usually have to bring out my camera. I’d love to switch to a phone, though. Would you mind sharing which model Samsung you were using in this vid? 😀

Great video, have you looking into getting a bluetooth photo shutter or bluetooth controller? You paid these with the phone and then you can remotely take photos without having to touch the phone! I know that you can use the timer function on your phone but it's just simpler to use the bluetooth controller to take the shots. Most bluetooth controllers that are used for gaming often have a 'mouse mode' so it can be used to both take the shot and control the focus.

I have been reluctant to use the box because of the time taken to repeatedly replace the background and to keep my blood pressure in the normal range. Thanks Colin

HOW DO YOU GET RID OF THE GRAYNESS OF THE PHOTO THAT COMES WITH TAKING PHOTO WITH SMARTPHONE?... @4:35 YOU CAN SEE ON THE LEFT THAT THE IMAGE HAS THIS DULL BACKGROUND INSTEAD OF CLEAR PRISTINE WHITE.. WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS?
@msabansmith
@msabansmith Год назад
Never noticed a poor quality exposure when using my phones. I choose a neutral grey background to get the natural colours of the piece. If I wanted a pristine white background instead of the grey, I would use the white background screen that is provided with the light box.
@peterevans8194
@peterevans8194 Год назад
Runifuceeme: I noticed/thought the same thing...I am not sure how much control of exposure and metering you have on a smartphone, but as somebody else mentioned in a previous post, it looks like the camera on the phone is trying to reduce the back ground to 18% grey....However if you were using say a DSLR camera, you would expose for the object, and allow the white back ground to blow out a bit...Then it would be a case of using the exposure compensation to fine tune the results....
@msabansmith
@msabansmith Год назад
The background is grey, not white. White is too stark for me. Grey show the colours of the piece more accurately and doesn't blow out highlights.
