103 Harley Is the Best Twin Cam Engine Harley-Davidson Made

The 103 Harley is when Harley-Davidson got the bugs worked out of the Twin Cam engine. The late 103 Harley really didn't have any major issues other than running ridiculously lean as mandated by the government. The Screamin Eagle compensator now stock, good oiling system and the addition of twin cooling really made for some excellent motorcycles. The 103 Harley is the best buy and ride bike out there with it's power output and lack of really major issues.

I bought my first Harley on impulse, which happens to be a 103. I didn't do a lot of research into other models, but my 2015 103 turned out to be a safe bet. Since buying the bike, I've upgraded the stock primary tensioner to a Screamin' Eagle tensioner (manual adjustment, but doesn't need adjusting very often). I don't know how much my crank is running out, but I don't want to know either. Eventually when I get the cam chain tensioner replaced, I might ask my mechanic guy to check the runout just for curiosity. I try not to ride the bike in temperatures over 90 degrees F and I'll wear out before the engine wears out. Yes, an oldie, but a goodie.

Built crank, new cams, high compression pistons, thunderheader 2-1, head work, full dyno, oil pump, and upgraded suspension. Makes 115hp and 115 torque. Bike absolutely rips and sounds great. Me and one of my boys were talking about our Twin Cams and why we can’t get a new Milwaukee 8. Every time I go to Harley the sales person will ask me if they can get me in a new Milwaukee 8, I let them know I’m fine, my 103 is fully built and nothing they have in here coming off the lot can touch mines, and yes I give 131s a run. They can jump on me but I pull them in easily in 2nd gear. There would have to be a built Milwaukee 8. But ultimately I love the durability of my 103, it still has great gas mileage and she definitely grabs attention of a lot of people. I’m in so cal, I’ve road tripped to The Bay Area, Las Vegas and Phoenix, Twin Cam is still beasting for me!

Spot on assessment of the 103. I had a 15 103 and it was fantastic. No issues. Like a numbskull, I traded it for a 17 CVO SG. The engine/tranny was full of problems. Water pump failure, transmission failure, head gasket on rear cylinder blew out, and finally the oil pump failed on the Tail of the Dragon. After a complete rebuild in Maryville TN I rode the bike home to Texas and sold it. I searched the web and found a 14 RK 103 in New Hampshire with 26 miles on the OD. A lot more bang for the buck then a CVO and tons more enjoyable.

I love HD, hell I am a HD Technician. However, I am convinced that when they end up producing something relatively bulletproof and dependable, they scrap it for something else because solid dependable motors don't bring enough people into the service bay thus cutting into revenue. This is evident with the 103 and the good ol single cam Evo. I acutaly prefer my Evo in my FXR over even a new shiny ST with an M8.

My first was an 88ci. I thought there was something wrong with the engine. Had no power! Then I was told one had to do Stage 1 minimum, air, pipes and rejet. Next was the 96ci. Much better, but still lacking in power to move a bagger right. Next and last so far is my 2014 103ci. What an engine. I love this one. This is the one I went full out on with head work by Dan Vance Racing, Woods 222 cam, V&H pipes, air and a remap. Runs so good. Beats any new HD stock motor for power and torque unless it's a 117ci. And the sound is awesome too! What a bonus. Complete change of suspension and my bike just rips. I made it too good. I just can't let go of it. 103ci is a great starting point to get great power and a bonus, great gas mileage too. As long as I keep it under 80, I can get 48-52 mpg. After 80, it's a huge drop. LOL Thank for the video as always. Great work.

Well, first let me say that the Evo is my favorite motor. That aside- the 96” is my favorite. Why? Because it is a stroked 88”, which is only 6” more than the Evo at just barely under 82”. These engines are getting bigger and BIGGER and hotter and hotter there is no end in sight! An Evo took me to the west coast and back to Tennessee with no heat related issues and plenty of power. Now I love my 2009 Ultra but I did have to cajole it into shape with pipes and a tune to cool it down. And smooth? It’s like sitting in an easy chair strapped to the hood of a Cadillac. But thi is as far as I go. 96” should be a big enough dick for anyone:)

I went from a '99 twin cam 88 to a '14 TC HO my 88 had gear drive S&S 510 cams and a Power commander III. I agree with you as my 103 HO has such a sweet power band and torque output that it just makes the ride seem effortless in comparison. I have a stage one and a complete cat less V&H exhaust with a tuner and that is as far as I am going with it. It has just a small amount of lope in the exhaust at idle and plenty of power for me and mechanical noise is greatly reduced compared to the 88. I really love this motor. I also have a 107 M8 with an aftermarket stage II (Cam, Oil pump, Cam plate, Inner cam BRGS, Lifer cuffs, & push rods) with the same exhaust and a tuner. I really like that motor as well. Thanks for your vid's I really enjoy them.

I'm still lovin on my 2000 wide glide with 88 inch engine. I've had two factory trained mechanics tell me it has wider, sturdier wheel bearings. Bearings in the engine are sturdier than some later years. The bike has 88,000 miles on it and the engine and trans have never been apart since it was built. The 103 really should make more power but I bet it can't deliver 50 mpg. I started using Amsoil at the 10,000 mile mark. The only mods are a screaming eagle ignition, K&N high flow air filter, screaming eagle kit that prevents oil fumes from being fed into carburetor, and the carb was rejetted one step richer than factory. A word on exhaust. I swapped my exhaust to Vance and Hines longshots and noticed a major reduction in low end torque. I definitely had to use more throttle to get it moving from a dead stop. there was more power above 3500 rpm but I didn't like having to crank the engine to high rpm to get it moving. By doing research I learned the reason was the V&H pipes did not have a crossover. Dyno tests proved the crossover makes more torque at low rpm. Before I put the factory exhaust back on I did some work to them by drilling out as much as I could. That allows them to breathe better. Now even with the factory pipes it sounds pretty healthy and it pulls strong right off idle. I can ease out the clutch and it will pull away respectably with no extra throttle. It has so much torque I seldom need to rev higher than 3,000.

I agree with your assessment. I had 3 103’s. Still have my 2011 RK. Due to emissions standards getting tighter and the number of bikes Harley produces, the motor company had to improvise. The naturally aspirated 88 ran powerful without the limiter however Harley couldn’t sell it like that. The 103 is the closest to best of torque, horsepower and maintenance.
@Lurch-Bot
@Lurch-Bot 5 месяцев назад
I have an 88 and can confirm it is a beast when you let it breathe properly. Having a good (not stock) suspension also helps get power to the ground. It also has power delivery characteristics I like. As they made them bigger, they became more undersquare which gives you more low end torque but ruins the top end, where I like to live. Where the motor smooths out and purrs like a kitten and you get a rush of acceleration as you rocket past 4500 rpm all the way to the limiter. Turns out stock cams do make power above 5500RPM when the engine can breathe freely. I run my '05 FXDI with a K&N filter and open headers. It is tuned via a FI200R. I haven't had it on a dyno but seat of pants feel reveals it is more powerful and more responsive than a stock 103. It is faster off the line. In fact, it is faster than a 2007 FXDSE screamin' eagle with a 110. All Twin Cam motors rolled out of the factory half choked to death and running super hot due to emissions regulations. I hear no end of complaints about cam chain tensioners, which aren't a problem when you let the engine breathe and run a proper fuel air mixture because the engine and oil don't get anywhere near as hot. Stock config runs so hot, it exceeds the working temp limit of the plastic shoe. May even get hot enough to ruin the temper of the springs, IDK. I think I have 30k on my bike and no issues with cam chain tension so far. I also use synthetic oil which probably helps. I don't baby it either and it basically runs like a new bike.

I've owned Harley's since '97 starting with a '97 1200 Custom then my first Big Twin was a '00 TC88 and I proceeded to own every engine config up to a '17 M8 107 Road King. It was a nice, very smooth ride, but eventually, I sold it and bought a '16 Slim with the HO 103. I am very happy with her.

The " automatic chain tensioner " is an " automatic chain tightener ". After a transmission failure I replaced it with a Baker Attitude Adjuster and have had no more issues.

I've got a 96 inch TC and having heard stories about the primary tensioner, decided to swap it for a Hayden. When I pulled the cover off, everything was perfect, chain tension was spot on at 22000 miles.So my point is, it CAN overtighten, not it WILL overtighten. Same with the crank run out, mine is fine.

I have a 103 Heritage, she breaths much better, in the low 100hp range. Love it ! Looking to buy/build a touring bike (regret selling the FLHTCUSE4, had for 12 years). Not sold yet on the M8's. For the money, I am thinking i can pick up a garage queen 103 or maybe even a 96 in a FLH frame, and get much more out of it for the $$$.... Thanks for the clarity you bring to the table.

With a Bigsucker Intake, a Bassani 2-1 Roadrage, an S&S 585 Cam kit, a Feuling Oilpump and Camplate kit and a V&H FP3 programmer, my 2012 FXDWG took off like an animal and has been among the most reliable Harleys I ever had. I now have a M8 Ultra Limited and I have done the same pep-up on that…used a Zippers 468,..and I have absolutely no issues 👍🏻 It could very well be a million mile engine as Harley say if you treat it right !

I have the same, no engine issues at just under 150,000km, I did have the cam chain tensioners replaced at 100k, the outer was fairly worn. Apart from that I love my Wide Glide, sounds and runs fantastic, have done some huge tours around Australia on her, she belts past those road trains with ease😀

I bought a 103 Road Glide Ultra new in January 2012. I put Rineharts on it initially, with a lower resistance air filter and a re-map of the fuel injection. About 5 years later I put on a Vance & Hines full header system, Pro Duals. Kept the RIneharts on it. 2 years ago I put a hotter cam in it, which I selected because of the power increases down low at 2500 to 4500 RPM. Amazing awakening of the mid-range power, but I took a hit in the MPG, down from around 38--40 MPG to a typical 32-36 MPG. Turns out, power costs money, I think. Still have mad love for the scoot and ride it solo interstate often.

I can only offer up an opinion on the motors I have. 08 Rocker C with Air, Cam and V&H Exhaust - Awesome running 96 inch and the 6 speed trans is really pretty smooth. 04- Springer Softail 88 with Fueling Cam and hydraulic cam tensioner upgrade. Power Commander 5 along with V&H Straight Shots with "Quiet" baffles - Nice and torque laden though the 96 rates ahead. 98 Fatboy 80 Evo - Different experience altogether. Would have to do upgrades now to ride it more frequently as I find the stock Evo with just aftermarket pipes only in the 50's HP wise and not agile enough with the nutjobs out there driving today in ChicagoLand. And Finally - 2016 Thunderbird Storm. 98HP and 115 ft lbs of torque connected to Triumph's 6 speed trans is a great combination of escape velocity on tap and low RPM, high speed cruising.

Hi, I do enjoy your videos a lot. In fact, this video and the one about the Harley nobody wanted convinced me on buying a 2012 switchback. It's compllete with bags and everything, unmolested and 12,000 miles on it, but a bit neglected. Still having brake light issues, put a new tire in the rear. and fixing it up. I've ridden it about 250 miles and love the comfort and handling. In the meantime Still riding my sporty, old faithful thank God. So, thanks for your videos and insights.

My 88 would run on 89 octane on the highway but needed 91 for serious back road adventures. My girl's 103 with screaming eagle pipes and intake runs on 89 all the time and can endure 87 octane on extended highway rides. My stock 107 will only run on 91 or higher octane. On one tank a buck or two more per tank isn't much but when your riding 2 to 4 tanks of gas a day it adds up.

P.S. Harley should make all this stuff available when you spec out your ordered bike or ones on the showroom floor. (Tell them what you want & they do it before you take delivery) Plain & simple plus no hassles.) (All under warranty of coarse). That way, it's all done & no bringing the bike back in for a tear down.

in 2011 my road king came with the auto compression harness all I had to do was have the automatic compression release installed in the heads. and they are activated when you turn the ignition on. Not when you hit the starter switch.
